  1. I have a bitch here that I am considering rehoming with her son. Super home and i know she is well suited to it but I am a little concerned about how she is behaving with her 2 daughters I have kept and am wondering if it is a wise thing to place her with her son. She is a lovely soft smoochy girl who I have never seen show any signs of aggression but never the less is top bitch here. Her last litter is 10mths old and I have 2 bitch puppies still here from it which she regularly rolls and tells off if they look like they are showing the slightest sign of having any fun. In short while not nasty she is very growly with them which is totally unlike her. She mixes with all the other dogs here without an issue and wasn't like this with her previous litter. She hasn't seen her son in 7mths so I am hoping she won't behave in this manner with him but considering her new home is a plane flight away I am just not sure what to do. If she goes she would go on trial anyhow but I am just not sure if sending her is a wise thing to do. Has anyone else had this? Do they forget considering it has been so long since she has seen him? I wouldn't be at all concerned if this wasn't her son. It is a superb home that she will love but the main purpose of them getting a second dog is company for their current one so I don't really want to send one that is going to totally dominate him. If they were local I would say just take her for a few weeks and see how it goes but it is so far away.
  2. I have had a look round and other than the sulphur pills from the health shop the only powder sulphur I can find is call Flowers of Sulphur from the garden centre. Is that ok to use?
  3. Can I ask how much you give each dog. I have just startedd using this myself and haven't been able to find anything regarding quantity
  4. I have considered health issues and they have agreed if it happens again they will take him to the vet but considering he always has access to outside and doesn't soil anywhere else in the house I don't see how health issues could cause him to specifically soil on the bed. Anyone else had this?
  5. I had a phone call tonight about one of my shelties who is in a pet home. He has been there 3yrs now and is 7 years old, always been a very clean dog and not one to mark inside but for no apparent reason he has started peeing in the middle of the bed in the spare room. He has a dog door so it isn't that he can't hold on and they assure me nothing has changed. I have suggested they keep the door shut but long term that isn't going to work. I have suggested a vet check if it happens again but they seem to think he is happy and healthy. He is quite a submissive dog so I really can't imagine it being a dominance thing but I am open to ideas. Any suggestions?
  6. I am in a similar situation as I lost my aussie Quest at only 6yrs of age nearly 4mths ago. The logical thing to do is to get another dog as not only do I miss her dreadfully but her best mate Reeve is pining for her but I am just not ready. It has never been an issue before but I think similar to yourself that is because every other dog I have lost has been a grand age after living a long and happy life. For me to get another puppy at the moment would not be fair on that puppy but everyone is different. Presently I am still at the I don't know if I will ever get another aussie stage but I am sure that will change as I love the breed..
  7. Depends why they have cancelled. If it was something life changing like death in the family or redundancy yes I would refund but otherwise no. I don't currently take deposits but I am seriously considering it as you think you have confirmed homes and then next thing they cancel. It is very frustrating and time consuming
  8. I think you will find case law doesn't support this. A puppy is under case law a good so the breeder has acted in good faith and offered a refund for the return of the puppy. If it was a toaster all would be well as our hearts wouldn't be involved and we would have no issue returning the faulty toaster but I don't believe you could keep the toaster and also expect a refund and I know you can't also claim vet bills As a breeder I would certainly offer at least a partial refund depending on the severity of the issue and I would let them keep the puppy but I don't think there is any legal obligation. It may be different in Aust but this is definitely the case in NZ
  9. Mix a bit of wet cat food in with her normal tea, works wonders
  10. Minimum of 5 foot I would have said and as to the type it really depends on where the fence is. If it is anywhere people can see in I would be want it solid to protect your dogs from strangers and roaming dogs. I have deer fencing here and it is great as I am well off the road and no close neighbours but I wouldn't dream about that in town.
  11. Also depends where it is going to and from. My last import cost nearly $3,000 NZ but my friends going Melbourne to Wellington only cost $1,800 odd. Not cheap anyhow
  12. Cowan has a partial blockage that was not picked up by examination or x-ray even using the beads to add contrast. Because it was only a partial blockage it causes symptoms very similar to what you have stated but it happened on and off for weeks. Hope it is nothing serious but don't rule it out
  13. When I lost Quest a few mths back her best buddy Reeve was devastated to an extent I have never seen before. He took to sitting by himself out in the rain and become withdrawn and very sad. It was extremely tempting to buy another dog but the truth is I wasn't ready and it wouldn't be fair to the new dog so I just tried to carry on as normal. Time was the only thing that has fixed it and even now he isn't the happy fun dog he was. I also would recommend the DAP, it really does work
  14. My old girl was one of 3 bitchs in a litter already named by the breeder, Millie, Mollie and Mandy so difficult to change that one. I have a Payton because I had to pay a ton of money to keep him alive, he had major surgery 1/2 way across the country at 9weeks old. My current puppy was meant to be called Miley but she refused to acknowledge the name to the point she would turn her head away s one day I sat down and tried calling her a number of different names. When I called Rainie she bounded over to me, so she picked her own name
  15. But certain colours can't be put on mains register, unless the breeder lies about it, so therefor can't be bred from And shouldn't be as they do not comply with the standard
  16. I have done it with no issues but they were under for quite a long time so not sure if I would do it that way again. 2 short anaesthetics may be better than one long one.
  17. That was Dante....he's so awesome at costing money. That was cheap..............it cost me way over twice that! That was middle of the night emergency surgery, a couple of plasma transfusions, 3 days in hospital, IV fluids, multiple blood tests, lots of drugs....................... Hope he's okay and it's nothing serious. I am willing to swap vet bills too. My chicken bone cost me many thousands and he will never eat a normal meal again. A lot of complications and a 6mth recovery period makes for very expensive vet bills. It gets to the point where you don't want to keep track. Glad to hear he is feeling better.
  18. I wouldn't rush into anything. Vets tend to say IBD far too quickly sometimes. Have they changed the puppies food, what are they currently feeding? Have they changed the diet suddenly? I would ask them to stick strictly to the diet you fed them on for 6 weeks and see if he improves. Some puppies just have sensitive tummies.
  19. Yep but if we sell them good breed quality that is a good worker and we allow them to use our champion dogs whcih are good at work then they wouldnt need to breed dogs which were good workers but not good specimens of the breed. I can see your point but while it may be bettering the quality of dogs they are breeding given the bitch would be put to sub standard working type dogs the resulting puppies are unlikely to be an improvement on the dam. Also in my breed it is extremely difficult to breed what I consider a top quality sheltie, perhaps 1 pup in each litter is worth on continuing on with and maybe 1 in every 3 litters is outstanding. If you are also looking for drive it would that even more difficult.
  20. I would consider selling main registered dogs to sporting homes but in my experience they tend to ignore breed quality for working ability and breed dogs that I consider substandard and I find that difficult to accept. I don't believe in my breed there is any need for this, if you are breeding with temperament as a high priority in most litters there is at least one puppy that needs a job and would excel at obedience and agility. From a buyer point of view I do understand how difficult it is to buy quality main registered dogs without ties. I breed shelties but like to have 1 or 2 aussies with no interest at all in breeding. It has been quite difficult to buy the quality of dog I want outright which I have found quite insulting considering I have been breeding/showing over 20yrs and never had issues before.. I do understand why, we have all been burned before and it makes us wary but surely that shouldn't mean blanket distrust for everyone.
  21. I have enforced my contract in court. My pet puppies will be desexed. I wouldn't sell to a lot of show homes. While my aim is the betterment of the breed my main concern is the welfare of my puppies so I sell to the homes that have compatible views with me. And yes I have still been burnt by a fellow breeder using a puppy I sold them prior to health tested. Have learnt from that now, anything sold for breeding regardless of how long I have known the person goes out with endorsements requiring health testing prior to breeding or the puppies are not registered. In the end all we can do is our best and learn from our mistakes, unfortunately sometimes that is at the detriment of a puppy How have you enforced it in court? Contract law says you cant make someone promise to do something with their property after it is their property. In the end all we can do is work out that once that dog goes home we cant control what the owner does with it and registered breeders are just as capable if not MORE capable fo mucking it up as anyone. I am in NZ so maybe it is slightly different but my contract was upheld in the small claims and I could have taken my dog back. Ended up letting them keep her after she was desexed but I also know of a breeder who has uplifted the dog through the courts. It is all about having a clear understandable condition and repercussion. Buying a pet only, she will be desexed by x time or ownership reverts back to the breeder. Just saying she must be desexed isn't good enough.

  23. I have only done it once but yes I did charge full pet price but I would have paid for the health testing and they would have been paid a stud fee. Reduced if it was over my own dogs but full prcie for any others.
  24. Any time I breed a litter I am always going to place my puppies in the best home for them. I brought them into this world and it is my responsibility as their breeder. I get a lot of breeding enquiries, not show people but either people wanting to breed their pets or even worse puppy farms. While selling them my puppies may improve the quality of the dogs they are producing is it best for the puppies, of course not. They may be bred without health testing, they may be bred endlessly and when money becomes involved their puppies tend to be sold to the first person with the available dollars regardless of suitability. My pets will always be sold on a desexing contract and I will always enforce it. If you want to breed/show I expect you to build a relationship with me so I know we have compatible views and yes that dog will be on joint ownership. I will help and mentor you but I will not support pet breeding. Breed the best to the best and improve the breed.
