Can Permoxin Be Used On Dogs If You Have Cats?
cowanbree replied to Lily123's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My aussie Quest died because I used Permoxin on her. I used to spray particularly their legs and she hated it and on this occasion licked her legs, it went down the wrong way and she died of aspiration pneumonia. Freak accident but it is not totally safe so handle with care -
Reeve was last vaccinated at 15mths.. When the autopsy was done the blood was in the abdomen, everything thing else was in perfect shape. I really expected to hear he had a tumour that ruptured or something along those lines but apparently not. I just struggle to believe a bacterial infection could kill him so quickly with so little signs. My dogs are house dogs and I notice everything

Thanks everyone. Presently I am struggling to believe it let alone accept it. It has been devastating to lose Reeve made even worse as I lost his best buddy, my first Aussie Quest nearly 12mths ago to pneumonia at only 6yrs and he has been so sad and lost that I finally decided to buy another Aussie, Nova who arrived just prior to Xmas and now she is lost without Reeve. I think perhaps I had best stick to my shelties, they live to grand old ages

Last Sunday my 3yr old fit and healthy 30kg Aussie Reeve died. As tragic and hard to accept as that is the fact that I have not been able to come up with a reason for why makes it so much worse so I am hoping that perhaps other DOLs have had a similar experience which will help me put my mind at rest. On Saturday morning Reeve had diarrhoea. No blood in it or any mucus or colour. He was obviously feeling quite crook and went and sat with his head over the water bowl taking small drinks which he then regurgitated. I wouldn't normally rush a dog with diarrhoea to the vet but he looked so uncomfortable I thought it might pay so off we went. Prior to leaving he had one more episode of diarrhoea and also urinated inside which was totally unlike him. No blood in anything. He was walking fine, had normal gum refill but did have a temperature of 39.5. Vet agreed it was most likely a gastro and we decided to put him on fluids, maxalon and IV antibotics just to be on the safe side. I rang several times during the day, no further diarrhoea and he had picked up within himself but still wasn't eating so we decided to leave him overnight so he could stay on fluids. Needless to say after hearing he had improved with what I thought was a simple gastro it was a huge shock to get the phone call the next day to say he had died I have had an autopsy done as well as lab tests done and the only thing I can add is he had blood in his abdomen. The pathologist is of the opinion that he most likely died of a bacterial infection from something he ate. I just don't understand that. In hindsight he was perhaps fractionally quiet the day prior but ate his tea and had a play with his mate just prior to bed. How can you go from this to dead in just over 24hrs from a bacterial infection even with IV antibiotics and fluids? I suspect poison of some sort but they are fairly sure it isn't. Other than a slight temperature and the diarrhoea on 3 occasions he was not seriously ill and it happened so quickly I am not seeking to blame anyone, I just need peace of mind. PMs are fine

14 Month Old Bitch Peeing On Beds
cowanbree replied to Leema's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have a line of shelties that does it. Right from Great Granddad down, very frustrating and doesn't seem to be much you can do about it other than keep them out of the bedrooms which isn't that hard. None of mine are partially dominant dogs and they have never peed anywhere else, just on the bed. if you find some magic solution I would love to hear it -
Breeding With Bitches Who Have Had A C Section
cowanbree replied to Andisa's topic in Breeders Community
What do you do with a bitch who has had ONE C section - Very difficult as in my line I have had a lot of c-sections for primary inertia . Have really struggled with it but given they have good hips, elbows, eyes and temperments and I have had major issues with these in the past I am reluctant to lose this line. I will do 2 c-sections and then they are spayed If you bred the bitch again after one c section did she require another or not? Yes although given she had previously had a c-section I didn't leave it as long as I would have if I had been expecting a natural birth and often wonder if she could have delivered naturally Would you breed with a daughter from a bitch who had a c section. I have but primary inertia does seems to be herditary so they have required c-sections. My answers woudl be different if it wasn't primary inertia -
Oldies are inside with a dog door into the yard but the majority of the crew is kennelled in runs off from the garage.

Do Other Pets Mourn
cowanbree replied to sterlingsilver's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I think it depends on the dog. I have lost dogs and for the rest of the dogs it seems life just went on as usual even in the case of an extremely bonded mother/daughter team but last year when I lost Quest suddenly Reeve totally lost the plot. I will never forget his reaction to seeing her body, he had to be physically carried away howling and crying and it took me weeks to get him back inside. A dog that previously was glued to my side spent hours outside on the lawn in the pouring rain. It was difficult enough losing Quest but this made it so much harder. -
Apparently it was just released overseas last year and isn't yet in NZ. Is meant to work wonders http://www.askavetquestion.com/news/2011/new-drug-released-for-corneal-ulcers-in-cats-and-dogs/ Due to her age our options to treat Millies eye are limited as even a sedation would be very risky so she is just getting eye cream 3 times a day, (Tricin) and Mike has put local drops into the eye and scuffed up the surface. Going back in tommorrow for a check up. I know it hasn't totally heal but am hoping it is improving

I rang my vet and it isn't registered in NZ so you can't get it. Not sure about Aust

No issues Erny, would be interested to know.

My 16yr old has an ulcer which is currently under treatment. I was wondering in anyone has used REMEND which is a new drug for corneal ulcers. It apparently puts a film over the ulcer and claims to heal them in 48hrs.

The structure is there at birth and I am looking for a specific type which is also there at birth. I have found my eye is constantly drawn to that puppy. If I can't pick at birth it normally means there is no standout. There are always things to eliminate them later on, size, temperament etc etc but the x factor is present at birth.
-
Markings and colour and sex is about all you can tell at one day old. I usually pick my puppies at birth and seldom change my mind unless something like temperment becomes a factor
-
Very difficult to tell from pictures. If you are not able to view in the flesh I would let the breeder decide

I know a number of people in shelties who have tried it and only heard of one success. I did read somewhere that another breed that also had issues (perhaps Gorgon setters) was doing some research into why it wasn't working and playing round with the freezing process with some success. Chilled seems to have a better sucess rate

If You Were Choosing A Breed On Looks Alone...
cowanbree replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Shelties, love them and will always have them Australian Shepherd, stunning dogs Newfoundland, I have always wanted one but they are just too big for me currently and I am not sure I can live with the slobber American Cocker, one day I will have one. I think they are stunning but the grooming concerns me Pomeranian, also on my one day list. -
I have been feeding the lower protein lamb one for a while now on some of my oldies. Dogs love it and they seemed to do really well on it.

I have had the green discharge and low temperature in a bitch of mine. My vet said as long as she was eating and happy enough within herself and there was no temperature spike to just monitor her. She had a slight green discharge right up until I did a c-section but all the puppies were fine and the vet could see no reason for the green discharge. Her wellbeing was always the most important thing and I was prepared to c-section her straight away and spay if it come to that but at no time was she distressed so it was a waiting game. At the time I did a post on DOL but not sure if they keep them that far back but there would be more exact details on that Found my post http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/184448-whelping-issues/page__p__4192565__hl__%2Bgreen+%2Bdischarge__fromsearch__1#entry4192565

I am trialing Marmite added to the dog food. People swear by it so I thought it may work for the dogs. To early to tell yet

I get it a lot and just respond politely with I am sorry I don't believe in breeding cross bred litter esp without relevant health testing such as hips/elbows and eyes and walk away. You can seldom change their minds
-
That is correct re the declaration but MAF also does an in inspection on arrival so I would be talking in great detail to some of the more experienced transport agencies to make sure of procedures as I would imagine if it did get refused entry on arrival the dog would also have difficulty going back to Australia.
-
I would go back for another visit because as a breeder I have been in that exact situation with tired puppies. Second time round isit on meeting the mother properly and if no better walk away

I took her back to the vet yesterday and he has said to leave her for a week for the antibotics to clear her system and then bring her back for a swab. It is his opinion that antibotics won't help and she will have to grow out of it. Easy for him to say but one of my males is going mental over her, everyone has to be separated and it is causing fights so I can't see me leaving it 6plus mths until she comes into season. My dogs are all inside pets so this isn't going to work long term
