I'm trying to discourage my 12 week old shiba pup from chasing her tail which she does from time to time and I don't want to allow it to escalate. Last night my sister was over and observed her tail-chasing. I explained why I didn't want her doing it, but my sister informed me confidently that it was 'just a purebred dog thing to do' and there wasn't a lot I could do about it as I'd chosen to buy a purebred instead of a more mentally stable cross-breed... Is there any truth to this? Do purebred dogs actually chase their tails more than crosses or is it (as I am assuming) just a misconception? Thanks :)

My shiba inu breeder offered me the price of her pups in her first reply email which I appreciated as I didn't know when to ask either. She didn't tell me what they usually sell for in Australia or how she compared, she just said 'my pups are x amount' and only sells to pet homes so there was only one price. I have since discovered my pup was a lot cheaper than other breeders sell for, so that's a bonus as I couldn't be happier with my little girl. The breeder is SUCH a great person, and my pup came to me so loved and cared for, I am so lucky to have found her.

I was honestly surprised with how great VeboPet are... had my crates within 1-2 days of my order, great quality, really good prices and absolutely no complaints. Rare these days. I called them today just to tell them they're great lol.

Pardon my ignorance, but does 'taken from their mothers' in this sense mean weaned? Or does it mean when they go to their new homes at 8 weeks? I ask because my new puppy has been chasing her tail a little which is a worry! She came to me at 9 weeks, but was weaned before that as far as I know. Better go and get some vittles into her before it escalates!

This is my little goofball slouching by her crate - I tried to tell her Shibas were a dignified breed and she was letting the side down but she didn't seem to mind much :p

We're starting puppy classes next Tuesday, but I'm worried about her single vaccination so im being careful about taking her anywhere busy where unvaccinated dogs may be - bad for her socializing but don't want her getting sick. Balancing act! Taking her to a friend's house to get some human meet and greets tomorrow :)

Thanks everyone! She IS very cheeky! She chews everything and everyone lol. She is so cute though, her eyes are so black! Love just staring at her :)

The breeder has been 100% amazing in her support and interest in helping us adjust; I couldn't be happier with her and her husband :) I've just never had a breed like this one before so it's a learning experience lol

Just wanted to introduce the new member of my family. Cinder is a 9 week old Shiba Inu pup from QLD. She flew down here on Tuesday 4th and has been settling in. I am totally inexperienced in all things shiba and all things puppy, as I've fostered adult mixed-breed dogs but never puppies. So we are BOTH going to be learning the ropes I imagine! We're having some teething problems and I'll probably begin asking heaps of questions soon, but this is just to share my little girl with you :)

My best friend's cat has lymphoma and has received two courses of chemo. I wouldn't say he 'enjoyed' it but he was fine (a lot more fine than the majority of humans getting chemo). He is now in remission again and despite the 'C' word that hangs over my friend's head daily, it's granted her years she wouldn't have had with her boy. Those two have the closest bond I have EVER seen between a pet and human and she'd be lost without him. She had PetPlan and they've paid for everything, so many thousands of dollars she wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. She is currently talking me into getting pet insurance as she is a complete convert, but I'm pretty fond of the idea of putting money aside every month and just hoping it will be enough if something big happens. I already pay insurance for my car, my contents, my health etc etc lol. So much dead money if nothing happens... ah but that's the gamble isn't it :/

I had a rescue kelpie x that did this from the day we got to and still does it (she's with my ex now). We tried so many things to stop it but she never associated us telling her 'no' with licking, we tried heaps of different remedies, we painted our skin with gross tasting stuff, we removed all accessible skin from her (she'd start on clothes then) and did just about everything we could think of but in the end we gave up and just let her lick us (our visitors decreased in number lol). It was like it was subconscious or OCD or something, she just HAD to do it. Not 100% of the time, but a fair amount. Sorry I can't help, just if you can find something to stop it now, better than letting it go until she gets older and it's harder to stop. We got Kenya at 1 year old and it was ingrained by then I guess. Terrible habit!

Hi guys, I get my first ever purebred puppy on the 4th Sept and am dying from the waiting! I have no idea what to expect but am being as prepared as possible with all the things I think she'll need Seriously can't wait This is a pic of my little Shiba Inu girl (I posted in the spitz thread but need to chat to some fellow people waiting for pups! It's torture!)

This song is actually written about a much loved dog who had to be put to sleep It's not uplifting at all... makes me bawl every time I hear it, but sometimes that's what you need

Good afternoon My bf and I are getting our new Shiba Inu puppy in 1-2 weeks and are currently brainstorming the best way to keep her safe and confined but still with room to run and enjoy herself in the backyard while we're both at work during the day. She'll be 8-9 weeks when she gets here. We're trying to decide if we should build a run from the garage out into the yard (and thus no kennel), or if we should have a playpen type of thing attached to a kennel so she'll have protection from the weather. We're going to tag-team taking a bit of time off to ensure she settles in, and I work close to home so can pop back at lunchtime for a few weeks to give her lunch and make sure the day doesn't get too stressful for her alone after being so used to being with her mum and siblings. However, she still probably needs somewhere safe and secure while she's a bub. I've also heard horror stories about a Shiba's ability to escape from almost any enclosure so I don't want her free in the yard for a little while just in case. It's a fully fenced yard with 6ft fences but I've heard they can dig and climb from a young age >< There was a thread on DOL a while ago where people posted photos of the amazing runs/playpens/cubbies they'd designed and built themselves. I've searched for ages and can't find it Does anyone else remember that thread? My bf is quite handy so can build her something decent as long as we know what the best (a) materials to use and (b) design to aim for. Any suggestions? Thanks :)

I still miss my foster beagle from a couple of years ago. Naughtiest dog I've ever owned but I loved her dearly. Her story didn't end well which makes me feel I shouldn't have let her go, as in retrospect, she would most likley be on this earth today if I hadn't. However, I thought I was doing the best thing by her at the time so there's nothing I can do about it. Miss her pretty face even now.

Oops, I Think I Just Fed My Dog An Off Bone
Inka3095 replied to Inka3095's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks everyone :) She still smells pretty average despite the baby wipes I've been using on her - think she rolled in it or something ewwwww! She doesn't appear sick or anything, so I'm so relieved. Bath tomorrow! -
I have a cold, with a blocked nose. I bought my foster dog a pre-packaged 2x 'fresh' lamb bones from the dodgy pet supermarket down the end of my street this morning because my butcher was closed. There was no used-by date on the package (odd, no?) so I cut it open and gave her one. Came back inside and even my nose could pick up the stench now permeating through my house. Those bones were not good. I almost threw up cleaning up the second one taking it out to the garbage bin. I went back to get the bone from her and tempt her with another treat in exchange but she had already eaten most of the feral meat off the sides of the bone and was just chewing on the rest. I know she's a dog and all, and I know they dig up bones and eat them later, but this bone REALLY smelt bad.... Would you guys be worried? I'll watch her closely but is there anything I should do in the meantime? Also, would you be calling the store and complaining or just chalk it up to experience and just not return?

Black Labrador Doing Some Cute Tricks :)
Inka3095 replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yaaaay thanks so much for the videos! My foster dog has learned everything I've asked her to do in such a short amount of time I've run out of trick ideas, so these are awesome! -
Afternoon all Saw this link on my FB and thought I'd share http://dstore.com/shop/pet-supplies/

Farewell To Bean On The Forum That Brought Us Together

Rest in Peace -
We were in Eltham, apparently one of the worst suburbs but after seeing some of the damage to some people's houses and cars on the news, I think we actually got away with it fairly easily. I do have full insurance, so I'll be calling them today to see what needs to happen to smooth out my poor car
-
We had a pretty amazing hailstorm here on Christmas day, despite the fact my car is now pretty damaged, it was still awesome to see. Thought I'd share just a couple of pics here whoa.. giant photos... using photobucket for the first time, so may have to work on resizing these next time lol

Hahahahah love the one of him giving the butterfly the evil eye

Blah, escape artists are the worst! Do you know what their motivation is? Boredom, separation anxiety, enjoy the challenge, etc? I thought my beagle was bad enough...! EF, does KCC park have a schedule of shows that's available to non-showie people? I would love to come down and have a look, but do you have any tips beside just staying out the way of people who are looking stressed or about to step out with their dog?
