V.i.p. Petfoods Roll For Dogs
Christina replied to DogsLover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Its probably crap but many dogs do ok on it,my friends do. I dont use it but I tried a borrowed bit on my pregnant girl who was turning her nose up at everything offered, even my fillet steak. She loved it. So if you have a dog that wont eat it sure works whatever they put in it. -
Advice On Dry Food For Sensitive Belly.

My nephew had similar problem with his rhodesian ridgeback. He spent a fortune at the vets,to no avail. I suggested Hills science Diet in Turkey & Rice for firmer stools. Fantastic,he stacked on the weight & his stomach problem just settled down. -
Your puppy is only a baby. She has recently left her mum & littermates & all is new & strange. IMO you are being far too strict. Get a puppy pen & let her be inside with family company. Its freezing & lonely outside. When you put her outside on her own,for a short while I hope, play with her for the first few minutes & have toys, chew things etc out there so she has a pleasant association instead of I am shoved out here all day. Wanting to be close to you & cuddle is normal. Cant advise on crate training as I dont do it,I paper train pups. Early waking is normal. Your puppy is not going to be an uncontrolable monster if you ease up a bit.

Brussel Sprouts mashed in with their food. I had a dog with this problem & tried the lot, metamucil, pumpkin, oils, you name it it didnt work but the sprouts did.

You cant bath him while he has stitches in. He can be clipped just watch that they are gentle with him & dont stretch out his back legs or clip near his boys bits, which will be shaved anyway.

I think you wont get anything unless you return your puppy. Which you wont but would you really want another puppy from here ? This is all a little more than just bad luck from your description of it all. My health guarantee for the 1st year says the general health of the dog is the owners responsibility but if there is any problem due to breeding/genetic issues they have a choice of returning the puppy & a full refund or if the problem can be treated & they wish to keep the puppy vet fees to be paid up to the amount of the purchase price except $200. As they get to keep their puppy which is already desexed, vaccs & microchipped I feel this is fair. To be honest as much as I would hate doing it if a pup needed thousand of dollars of treatment I would probably PTS too,I would go up about $1000 but am not mega wealthy however if anything like this did occur, which thankfully never has,I would not breed from them again no matter how small the risk of affected pups in future. I think you must just love & enjoy your very expensive puppy. A sad experience for you.

First you need a soft slicker brush. Try once or twice a day to get her used to it. Tell her, time for a brush or whatever. Stand her in the same place every time to do it. For a dog that struggles a coffee table placed in a corner so they cant wriggle back & away from you is good. Start by being at the side of her & stand her up. Place left hand under her chin, thumb one side fingers on the other, gently don't restrain. You now have control of her head & can stop her turning to bite you or wrap fingers round her mouth quickly if she gets really vicious. Start brushing her back first talking softly to her. If she goes to bite just say NO or Ah Ah in a firm voice. See how much of her you can do,a little or all is fine however you decide when its finished not her. Reward when its finished with a treat that is only used when you groom her. Mine all know what Chockie is & its only given when the clippers are used about monthly. When you brush her head if she shies away try putting your whole hand over her face just covering her eyes, thumb one side fingers the other again & take the brush gently over her head. Fingers close quick if she tries to bite & if you are in a corner with the wall behind she cant just run off. When she is ok with a brush start using a comb afterwards. Gentle, firm persistence until she gives in. Groomers not advisable until she get used to being a good girl. Some use harsh discipline so train her to be a good girl.

I had a Doberman that did this periodically for years. Eventually observed that it was done when the wind blew the line around & the washing flapped. Felt mean but I waited until it was a windy day & hung up a pair of stockings with the feet filled with white pepper. Left a big bowl of water close by. Watched her grab one from the window. She never touched the washing again. She destroyed clothes, bedding, anything & I had tried training & less drastic measures to no avail. This worked instantly.

I cant advise on products & poodles dont have shiny coats but when I changed all my cats to a raw meat diet within a very short time their coats looked like they were polished, never seen such a quick effect, fantastic.

When I had a big dog that did this I just used to step back, say No & turn my back on her & ignore. Worked fine & quickly. Others may have other suggestions.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious here but have you checked that nothing is bothering her around the back end ? No point in jumping to OCD if she has. She may just be playing too.

Does it really matter that much ? Its not a huge expensive really. I dont think thats whats wrong. I would be more worried about his rules & orders. My advice Do not marry him. Say goodbye to him & get another dog.

Why not ask the breeder to email you a copy of the pups pedigree. They should not mind. Also ask their prefix name & phone the canine association & ask if they are currently registered. It doesn't matter where you saw the ad. If more reputable registered breeders advertised on that site it would make people aware that they dont have to buy a cross breed or a shonky purebred from a backyard breeder. Check the relevant health tests for the breed have been done,as advised. When buying from interstate there is always some risk. Personal visit to a breeder in your own state is always the preferred choice whenever possible.

OMG,I am sorry I looked at this. I never realised how much I actually spend & have spent. How about you dont let OH know what you need & just slip a few items in every time you go shopping. Some things from the cheap variety stores can be just as good as shopping from pet stores & online shopping at places like www.dealsdirect.com.au have some great buys. Enjoy your puppy when he arrives & delete that nasty list of expenses right now.

People do all sorts of different things for sleeping arrangements. Some let them sleep on the bed which is fine as long as the pup can safely get off the bed. Not recommended for tiny pups. Box is a bad idea. No room & the pup will chew it. Some people crate. A warm bed in the laundry with some newspaper for toileting is fine. A puppy pen. The main thing is that your pup cant chew anything harmful, like wires etc & that it is safe & warm. It must have enough room to move about, food, water & somewhere to toilet. I like a puppy pen with some newspaper, water & nice warm snuggly bed placed next to my bed. The if puppy gets upset in the night I dont have far to go.

So pleased to hear that news. I check back with puppy buyers at around 8 to 12 months & just check all is well. Luxating patella generally shows up in the 1st year, but not always. If it starts late it may be due to other causes. Get your dogs legs checked at their yearly vacc & check up & get results noted on your vaccination cards, for your own records,a good habit. Oversize crops up a lot in the toys,I get this in some & am working on it. Very common but there are worse things. Health & soundness is the most important. Not all pups go to show/breed homes & people deserve healthy pets. It makes them go to registered breeders more too. Hope all goes well for you now.

Yes I am getting a replacement from the same line breeding but he is already one year old and has already sired lovely pups.Deceided on the older boy rather than a pup as at least I know he has no hip ot leg faults. Do some research on Patellas & health issues. The related boy from the same lines can still carry even if he is not showing the fault. The fact that he has already sired lovely pups does not mean that the pups patellas will be sound. Most breeders do not keep contact with puppy buyers to check a year later that all is well. They can be fine at 8 weeks & way out at 8 months. There was some good info in Breeders Community on this forum a few months ago. Search the topic. One should try not to breed from a line with a known fault, thats anything other than very minor. Luxating patella is crippling, not minor.

I have no experience of the use of this drug. A poodle I had long ago had severe arthritis through out her whole body, diagnosed at 3 years of age. Treated her with a daily massage, she loved it,occasional metacalm in the colder months, tried acupuncture & saw no improvement. Short coat, very gentle clip & grooming & walks in a pushchair for her last 3 years. Lived 10 years but got very bad the last one. Sad. I hope the breeder does not replace your puppy with one from the same,or close line breeding,or you could end up with the problem again. Check pedigree thoroughly. A disappointing start for you.

Drier Woes With 15 Week Old Pup .... Help
Christina replied to NoodleNut's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Big bad noisy driers can be so scary for dogs if they are not used to them. I get my puppies used to the noise 1st at about 5 weeks old but dont blow it on them for the 1st few times. Then I hold the puppy close to me so the dryer goes on both of us & talk reassuringly to them. It also stops then freaking out & jumping away or biting at it. This only takes one go & then they are fine. She is just scared so start her this way like a big baby. Forced when terrified,by some stupid people, with a high velocity drier I have actually seen a few dogs go into fits so go gently but firmly & she will soon be fine. Dont start then stop when she kicks up,unless she is absolutely hysterical, which she shouldn't be. They do all get used to it. -
Constipated Dog - Very Dry Poo
Christina replied to Katdogs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My 6 year old dog gets this also, not too often now. After trying the usual, parrafin, pumpkin, extra liquid, reduce chicken bone etc the best thing I have found is to add some Brussel Sprouts to his meal about twice a week. Works like magic. -
Toy poodles. Boys desexed at 10 weeks, girls between 11 & 12 weeks. No problems, they hardly notice its been done. You do need a vet that is very experienced in early desex though.

Browsing on a US dog site they had a photo of the grooming room. The dog clippers had a vacuum hose attached that took the hair to a disposal thing as the hair was clipped. Good idea. Has anyone ever seen anything like that here ?

At 9 weeks he is only a baby. As he is going on the paper & outside some of the time he is learning & trying to please. No problem there. Full bladder control wont be there yet & excited puppies sometimes forget. A big dog trains quicker than a small one but expect a few accidents for a few more weeks. Telling him off if you catch him in the act is fine but he wont understand if you chastise after the event. Have one word that means toilet so he learns & knows what you want. Lots of praise for going. Some swear by crate training. I wouldn't do it. He is doing well for his age. Just have patience you don't need to do any more than you are already doing.

Can only think to try sleeping pills from your vet for him. It must be annoying but if he is enjoying life & this is the worst he is doing its worth a go. He is probably getting confused about noises in the night with his senses going. I had to have one of my senile dogs pts 18 months ago,so hard but he got very bad, plus other problems. So sorry what a dilemma.

A simple blood test at your doctors will tell you if you have dog/cat allergy. Results come back quite quick, about a week. Meanwhile give them both a bath. When my new kitten arrived from interstate I took her out of the carry cage for a cuddle. My son had an asthma attack & I broke out in big itchy welts. He has slight cat allergy & I have none, can roll in animal hair with no reaction. Phoned the breeder & she had sprayed kitten with Frontline spray. Last week I received a new adult cat. Again broke out in in small itchy spots which my friend could actually see appearing like measles. Not wanting to chance bathing wiped her over with some baby wipes followed by a damp cloth. Fine now so I assume she has been flea treated too. Tested negative years ago for animal allergy,as part of a research thing, but positive chemical reactions. Could be either for you so baths first & make your appointment. Then you will know for sure.
