I also have the puppy pen above, $60 special, but it may be too light for a big dog. Ok outside with tent pegs. My toy poodle kept jumping & the pen moved about a lot, bit unnerving with pups in it. Some salvage places have metal panels similar to the ones from Bunnings that are a bit heavier & higher that can be joined in the same way. I also picked up a crate that came from the back of a ute. Its about 3.5 x 4.5 feet & 4 foot high. Great sturdy puppy pen.

Wrong Diagnosis Now Vet Says Only Weeks To Live
Christina replied to lawrencefamily's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree & my heart goes out to you. If you have seen the Xrays & brain tumours let your baby go. Brain cancer is cruel & disorientating & your dog can not tell you what hurts or of any confusion etc. If it will make you feel any better by all means put a complaint in but it is often a frustrating & useless action. Your vets diagnostic skills could have been better but that does not constitute malpractise. Let your baby go with dignity & use another vet in future as you will not feel confidence in this one anymore. All so sad. -
Dont look You are being trained.
-
Absolutely no difference whatsoever. Toilet training has nothing to do with the sex of a puppy.
-
I dont know how you can train a dog not to go after snakes when you are not around but all my dogs are taught the command Leave It. We have the brown snakes in this state which are extremely dangerous & my dogs are only small & non aggressive. Basically if it moves, spider, moth, bird, anything I say leave it & they do however if I was not there I am not sure. In peak snake season I go out with them & stay out with them until I want them in. Your chook shed has to be out of bounds for sure.

All my puppies do this, especially to soft toys. Its a play thing. Ignore it. They just stop.
-
I really think it depends on the breed. My doberman puppy, years ago, was very receptive to training but no way would I try at 7 weeks with my toy poodles. I start groom/clip at 5 weeks to get them used to it but they are not trained at week 7. For a smart breed I find them very silly until about 6 months old then it all seems to click in. A dalmation I once had was an idiot for a good 6 months too but ended up really good. Working breeds seem easier to start young IMO. There is no completely right way to teach sit, everyone does it differently but they all get it in the end, whatever works for your dog is the right way.

Raw meat is great. All my cats & dogs are on it but I do cook some things I mix in for the dogs. No more smelly poos either. Not sure on dry, I only use a little but they do need less raw meat than say meat in a can as it is more concentrated. The amount recommendation based on body weight is not always accurate for individual animals, its trial & error, some can get fat on a little & others stay lean on a lot. 2 of my cats are similar weight & size but one eats at least a third more than the other. Give a little extra & see. If he starts to get fat you can always cut back a bit. I wouldn't include bone in the daily weigh in unless its ground up like frames or raw wing or necks. Big ones that are for teeth & to chew on can last ages. I dont know whats in patties as I dont use them.

Reccomend Me A Better Grooming Regime?
Christina replied to Rorschach's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Honestly cant & it seems no one else can make her look any better. As long as she is brushed, clean & comfortable does it really matter ? The dog does not care, its only driving you nuts. Its just the way her coat is. I wouldn't be messing about & putting all kinds of stuff in it. Not like its your own hair -
You need to go to another vet & get a 2nd opinion. If the diagnosis is the same from them both ask for this in writing & consult with the breeder. A correct diagnosis from photos on a forum is not really an good option here.

I think it sucks too, so why bother ? Go to www.dealsdirect.com.au & buy one of those big pens for about $50/60 or get 2 or 3 sets of Bunning wire compost thingy's ($20 each & join them all together with garden ties.

My daughter Chihuahua had a similar episode in the garden at about 18 months old. In the car to rush to vet & checked & he was fine, thought it was a spider bite. He had fits about twice a year after that. The vet did not advise medication for this frequency. He died when he was 16. Had a slight heart murmer too. Never a problem. Dont worry too much if they are not frequent. C5 is a strong injection for a small dog so may be reaction, or not.

All pups wriggle at first. You have had some good advice. Re the face & eyes. Place your puppy with his back in a corner so he cannot get away, at least backwards Brush the hair on his head back & move forward with your fingers the bits you need to trim on his face & near the corner of his eyes. Place your left hand over his head & just cover his eyes with it a bit. Try trimming along his nose or near the sides first so he gets used to you having scissors & hands on his face. Don't try eye corners yet as your hand will be in the way. Do it daily & after a few days he should be still enough for you to try the eyes corners. Angle the point of the scissors away from the eyes, so if he moves you don't poke him, & cut with the bit nearer where they open. Hope that helps.

Stains Under A White Dogs Eyes
Christina replied to Pukipoms's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Various causes. Vet is the 1st step. Yeast infection in ears, blocked tear ducts, no tear ducts, teething, dental problems. If none of above & vet cant find cause you could try changing diet, not sure if its relevant. Meanwhile wipe daily, just water on cotton wool & put in some Optrex eye drops, harmless but help a bit. Keep the fur near the corner of the eye short. Trim with scissors keeping the point away from the eye & cutting with the part further down where they open & close nearer the hinge. -
My puppies never leave at 8 weeks. They are desexed 1st & go after 11 weeks at the earliest, usually later 12/14 weeks. No problems. Puppy cant go to daycare at 8 weeks anyway, not vaccinated fully. I wouldn't want to leave an 8 or 14 week old puppy at daycare with a heap of other dogs anyway. You are anticipating severe seperation anxiety, it may not happen. All pups kick up a bit alone at 1st but most soon adjust.

Your puppy is very cute. I can see the chihuahua there. I also would not place in a sit position. These tiny breeds often have patella problems & as he is a cross breed I doubt parents & ancestors would have yearly checks & history, so not good for knees really. All my dogs always sit for food however I dont use food/treats for training much preferring verbal praise. When they seem to have a clue & dont want to do it, usually when grooming puppies I may tilt their chin up a little & tap the bum lightly with one finger, barely touching them. This does the trick & they understand. Everyone has their own way of training, there is no right & wrong way as long as its done with firm kindness & your dog understands what you want it to do. Its what works for you & your dog.

Enough said about expectations & puppy age, no suprises about behaviour, its with you now. How long do you expect puppy to stay crated in the day ? Try a safe room 1st, like kitchen/dining. Where you are in & out a lot, not isolated. Put the crate in the room with the door open. Bed, food & water, newspaper etc. Let puppy get used to going in & out at will & just crate overnight for the 1st few days. If you shut the door every time puppy goes in there it will not like it. When you go to work make the room safe, remove everything off floor, anything that can be climbed on & unplug & move any cords/plugs etc. Puppies are only babies, they cry, pee & chew things, all normal.

How many big dogs have you owned??? i would love to see your poodle chair damage compared to a lab Risks outside still apply inside but add eating power cords & electrocuting themselves. heat stress inside if the power goes off & all the windows are shut. The risks are the same either way but you own a dog so small . A Great Dane, a Dalmation & a Doberman. I dont leave puppies of any breed in a room with any power cords Air con gets left on low/timer if home alone & very hot. Kitchens/large hallways are pretty safe for puppies, maybe a few things to move first for safety. Lounges are the worst place, they always chew the lounge or edge of carpet if you have it.
-
Inside. I am one of those weird people from another country where dogs dont get left outside when no ones home, usually. Remove destructables & shut the lounge & bedroom doors. Some risks outside when no ones home Theft Snake bite Poisonous spider bite Choking, if they swallow something around the place Injury, eg getting stuck/wedged somewhere Heat stress, we get some very hot days No way would I risk a 4 month old outside with no one around, rather lose a chair leg.
-
Neither would I. Also not advisable, safe or kind to leave your puppy outside while everyone is out. Seperate the 2 inside or crate the puppy, if not away for too long. Although dogs dont really worry about size when sorting out who is boss from the sound of Molly it may be advisable to choose a smaller breed. Even when people are very used to dogs & their behaviour there can be accidents with too large a size difference.

Yes I have seen people with green teeth, its plaque.

Chester The Sa Podle Has Left Us To Go Over The Rainbow Bridge
Christina replied to Vixn00's topic in Rainbow Bridge
So sad & so sorry for you. :D -
Desex asap unless he is for stud, in which case you dont want to put him off by being scary. Teach the command drop, and use when he does it, also make your child give him commands, often, and see that the dog obeys them all.
-
You have enough advice on the toilet training but I would not leave any dog in an airline crate overnight. Too small, cruel IMO. Spend $20 at Bunnings on a wire compost crate. Its 4 metal panels you join together with plastic garden ties and you have a nice puppy pen for him every night.

Very cute little girl. I love wool wash, it brings my poodles up all fluffy, not sure thats the effect you desire though. Its fine as long as its diluted well & not used all the time. It does kill fleas, its what I use on very young dumped kittens that get thrown in here occasionally , not too strong or toxic as the chemicals on them. Bath her yourself until she is fully vaccinated, safer.
