That has made me feel like throwing up ;) How on earth can there not be grounds for prosecution ? Why weren't these dogs seized ? The photos should be published so the public really know what goes on & the lack of action to prevent it happening.

Do Relatively Unprotective Dogs 'step Up' If Necessary?
Christina replied to Pete.the.dog's topic in General Dog Discussion
They can do. You won't know until it happens. 2 suprises with mine in the past. I had a Dalmation that never even barked when someone was at the door. Silly boy who loved everyone. One day my male flat mate, who he loved, came home & said Did you watch the 3 muskateers last night. He said it was great. On guard. He lifted his arm as though he had a sword in it. Messing about. My dog jumped up & grabbed his elbow in his mouth. A Great Dane I had was also a gentle dog. He did bark at anyone at the door momentarily. Very friendly. One night I was away all night. When I arrived home in the morning he had knocked stuff off the work surface, left paw prints & gouged a bit strip of the gyprock wall out next to the window there. Great big claw marks down it. When I looked outside the window their were footprints in the bark at the window. Someone must have got a big scare. He was as big as a horse. -
Fabulous photos everyone. Lovely when they get along so well. No problems here. Some of mine. 4 cats & 3 dogs cuddled up together & no room in the bed.

2 at my feet here in the computer room. 2 on the sofa in the lounge & 1 looking longingly through the glass door at me but she can't come in. The hussy is on heat & the boys are in here with me ;) -
No but there are a lot of people out there willing to take your money. If there are actually ghosts of people ? there will be ghosts of animals. I can tell this story now as I have learned in the past 50 years that I am not crazy. When we moved house when I was 9 I kept seeing this boxer dog in our back garden. 6 foot brick walls & 8 foot double gates so I was puzzled. Whenever I went out there it vanished. I didn't tell anyone at first, it was also spasmodic, not all the time. One day I called my mum & sisters over to the kitchen window & said How is that boxer getting in our garden. They said they couldn't see any dog & my imagination was playing tricks, had I been sleep walking again, was I feeling nervous about anything. The answer was No & I kept quiet after that although I did see it now & then. Well you just think you are crazy really. When I was 7 I had a boxer puppy but she got out when I was at school shortly after & was killed. My dad got me a poodle for my 12th birthday & I never saw the boxer again. Wishful thinking & grief ? Vivid imagination ? Or was it the ghost of my pet trying to comfort me who left when I had another one to love ? I don't know but I know now that I was not crazy & I did see the impossible as clear as day for 3 years on & off.

Has Anyone Ever Boarded Their Pets At This Place In Sa?
Christina replied to julesluvscavs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Amazing, very impressive, I just wonder how they clean it between each dog, no hosing that lot out, major hand disinfecting job. Also if the dog destroys the decor or furniture are they billed for it. The sofa & tiger rug look like a big chew temptation. It all looks gorgeous though. So much nicer than a concrete run with a kennel in it. Worth the money, prices are quite good. -
Can't answer your questions. Hawaii seems a wonderful place to live, very beautiful & the perfect climate. I was watching surfing there a few minutes ago on TV, but I have heard its not so good for dogs. Puppy farm paradise with many exported to Asia from there. I also think that in a few years there will be no dog friendly place to live in Australia at all. I also believe many pure breeds will die out completely, at least in Australia. It will be too hard to breed here at all for pedigree dog breeders.

For my fluffy little poodles I must have Slicker brush Clippers Steel comb Could improvise with anything else, if needed, but not on those 3 things.

'building Better Dogs' Seminar 11 Feb 2010
Christina replied to mlc's topic in General Dog Discussion
Some breeder mate closely related animals. This is genetically undesirable as it increases the chances of the offspring having an inherited disorder, may compromise immune system function and ultimately leads to infertility. Before purchasing a purebred dog, you should find out what inherited disorders occur in your chosen breed. An internet search for 'inherited diseases' and the breed name will help, or you can have a look at the List of Inherited Disorders website (LIDA) website. Re above, cant do quote thingy. Sound advice but If they are buying a mongrel, oodle, noodle stupidoodle etc, from goodness knows where How can they check any of this out ? It is only by going to a reputable registered breeder, getting a pedigree & asking to see the results of tests needed for the breed that they can check these out. Does the RSPCA offer a genetic guarantee on all the puppies that come from them ? Maybe they have secret tests we don't know about -
Too close for me. While inbreeding/linebreeding can produce great pups & DNA/genetic testing can rule out the hereditary problems. There is no genetic test for temperament. While both parents may be terrific natured the only way to test the pups is to let them be born & then see. Madness in the aristocracy/royalty was why incest was made taboo. Before people got really scientific they figured that one out. For specific breeding to someone who is aware of all involved it could be fine but for a pet puppy I would choose more variety say no closer than grandparent/ grandchild mating. That's just IMO, may not bother others.

Not acceptable at all. Can't believe that last week 1 of my dogs, she is 5, growled at my adult son when he tried to take her bone. He has never tried before but she does not growl at me ever. I stood there & told him to take the bone. She growled. I said NO. Leave it & made him take the bone. He did & we told her good girl. We did it 6 more times with him saying NO. Leave it the last 4. She was fine after that & I told him to do it again the next day. She knows he is boss too now but he is not scared of her he was just a bit shocked. However you do it this must be stopped. You are the boss.

Bluntly put but How the bloody hell can they class disorders by breed if they guess the breed ? Is it to be done by Well it looks like a Rottie or Doberman because of its colour & markings. Its a chunky build so we will call it a Rottie. It doesn't shed, looks the right sort of shape, got a bit of a curl in the coat. Ok, we will call it a Poodle. Have I got that about right ? If so This is stupid & I can hardly believe they get donations from canine associations for pedigree dogs. Go away mad world Great letter. Hope the donation is reconsidered.

If they lived indoors before you had them & you have had them 2 years ? (It reads that way) & they have lived indoors Why would you want to make them outside in the day dogs now ? Big change. They will be fine as they can get into the laundry & its not too hot. Can they tackle a snake if they meet one ? They are around in the metro areas too, just not seen as much. Can any big dogs jump your fences or anyone open the back gate ? They probably will be ok but won't like it so not fair to change now unless there is a very good reason really.

I got the Batril window stickers from the supermarket. They are pretty & work to a degree. Always open the bathroom window when I have a shower & somehow they get in there. I found 4 flies dead on the window sill so I guess they are ok for small areas. Supplement other areas with a fly swat. 2 stickers on each window but they don't stop them completely. Chemicals choke me. The bug zapper works but its a horrid noise & my cats & dogs hate it.

Its a bit scary 1st time. Makes me think of movies where someone goes into labour & someone else says Boil heaps of water. Hello What for ? Turkish bath. If you wash your hands in between helping mum out I would just wash them in plain water & not put disinfectant of any type on them. This will go onto the puppies when you handle them & on the mum in places where there should not be any chemicals. As pups will have blood, fluid & messy stuff on them anyway, which is all perfectly natural & normal & which mum will lick clean automatically, usually, clean hands are safer & just fine.

A spare room to put it all in What on earth are you going to use latex gloves for ? Dettol, bin bags, syringe & paper towels are a bit puzzling too. The Brandy is a good idea. Good for the nerves but don't drink it until its all over just in case you need to drive to the vet. Good Luck with your babies. Hope it all goes smoothly.

Rspca Animal Rescue On Tv Now Channel 7
Christina replied to mish13's topic in General Dog Discussion
This made me feel as though I was going to throw up. How on earth can anyone have 140 dogs living in the house. Not possible to care for them all in any way. Can not understand why they have not been totally banned from owning any animal. This was as bad as it gets. The standard poodle was not so bad behaviour wise. I have had a rescue much worse than him who was not kept anywhere near as bad, although it was not good. Lovely to see him thrive & happy. The coat made me very upset. A blind man would have known that was cruel. I hope the general public watching now have more understanding of where their cavoodle, oodle or whatever she guessed they were, come from now. Absolutely cruel & disgusting. Where did they get all those dogs from in the 1st place ? All looked to be pure bred from what I could see so obviously selling the pups off as first crosses. -
Each has their own ideas but I have never heard of vaccs only 2 weeks apart, its always 4 weeks. It is your dog so it is your choice. Mine are done with 1 vaccine after week 8 & another 4 weeks later, which must be over week 12. eg wk 9 then wk 13 or wk 10 then wk 14. Some variations on the opinion of the 6 week vaccine being of any use at all. Go to a vet where they will do as you request, you probably already know how you want to vaccinate. Noahs Crossing at Lewiston is my recommendation if you don't mind a drive.

2 pups at once I consider fine. Depends on the owner but as a cat breeder I advise adding a kitten in is not a good idea. 1 pup, 1 kitten carefully supervised is lovely, 2 pups no because the pups have not learned to obey you & prey drive can take over so quickly. What starts out as a lively game can turn into sheer terror for the kitten. Kittens are good at finding escape routes & can jump higher than pups. With 1 pup a game may turn into annoyance for 1 of them. A puppy may bite & a kitten may scratch although one hopes to intervene before it gets serious but if 1 pup oversteps the mark & gets a scratch or whack the other pup may join in which may be tragic for the kitten. When your pups are a bit older & obey you reliably is a better time. I have adult cats & dogs & sometimes kittens & puppies. Babies are introduced carefully mainly 2 adults at a time. Even though mine are all good & used to it I would not let a couple of 8/10 week old pups be unsupervised with a kitten ever. My kittens are never left with the dogs if I go out until they are at least 6 months old.

Dogs Barking At Each Other When We're Not Home
Christina replied to benita's topic in General Dog Discussion
So you'd be happy to see 4 month old pups kept inside alone for 8+ hours a day, 5 days a week? Sorry but I fail to see how an active pup is expected to achieve any form of toilet training or any sort of decent muscle development in such a situation. They'd have to be crated or penned in separate rooms. A pretty sad future for an active little working terrier IMO. I'm no great fan of debarking but I think that would be kinder than life in a crate. This all seems to be going over the top & ridiculous. The post is about 2 puppies age 4 months old, that is still a baby age. They have a normal thing of barking over a toy or to play & a cranky neighbour complaining. We now have All this breed bark. They are not stimulated/exercised enough. They need a behavourist. They will always bark like this if its not stopped now. Its better to debark them than to follow the suggestion to seperate them for a day or a few hours a day to break the habit. They are a breed that is trouble & dumped in the pound a lot. Having 2 pups the same age is trouble. Overkill I reckon. Bit scary reading all this. The habit needs stopping so seperation, done kindly or teaching the command Quiet by distraction, spray bottle or whatever works to make them understand Shut Up is done by many owners of 2 pups or more. Have had to do it myself. -
Dogs Barking At Each Other When We're Not Home
Christina replied to benita's topic in General Dog Discussion
Go to Bunnings & buy 4 packs of the compost metal panels (about $25 per pack). Join 2 packs together with garden ties to make each dog a pen. This will make a pen 6.5 feet long & 3 feet wide for each dog. Set them up inside your house & pen & seperate them for a day & see what happens. When you are home the pens can be folded flat & put behind your lounge, or somewhere out of site. Its not a long term solution to pen them every time you are out but it may solve the problem/break the habit in the short term. Its one way to find out. Sounds like your neighbour has little tolerance for noise, this is a normal sibling rivalry puppy thing for many & they do grow out of it when they get pack order sorted. I would not be looking for a behaviourist for this at this age. Same as 2 children squabbling over the same toy really. -
Dog Limit Laws Coming In Australia Wide. Update Info
Christina replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
My crystal ball says pedigree dog owners are so busy bickering among themselves that they won't do anything to stop such processes . . . though an organised group could easily make the case for 'hobby breeding' permits clear. I would like to see the breeder permit and the 'hobby breeder' license combined . . . let the present generally high fees paid to register an entire dog or bitch be used to cover the registration fees for keeping a dog entire and perhaps require some sort of veterinary inspection to go along with it. Require desexing of all animals not registered as entire. Use the framework to make it possible for people with eight to twelve dogs to get 'hobby breeder' licenses -- which protect their right to keep multiple dogs in land with appropriate zoning. To be honest I am against any set law or permit system being put in place to be enforced Australia wide. I think it should be up to each council to choose what they will or will not permit in their own council area. What may suit a metro council would be ridiculous in many rural councils & small country townships. A person can choose an area to live in that suits their needs & lifestyle & check with the council beforehand. The by laws in my council suited my needs & lifestyle. I was allowed a number of dogs that was specified in the information I received when I purchased my property, no licenses, permits or anything else. The only requirement being that each dog is registered individually, which they are. The only concern is that if the by law goes through I have to ask if I may keep the extra dogs. I do not want my council to comply with uniform rules, laws, permit systems or anything else. It works fine the way it is, making its own. Which I so much hope they won't change. -
Purebred Is Best But What About Other Pets?
Christina replied to Wilderblu's topic in General Dog Discussion
Interesting how peoples attitudes vary, like purebred dog but love a moggy. As a cat breeder I love all cats but wonder about the hardiness of the moggy. Specific cat breeds have a tendency to certain hereditary things that can be tested for the same as dogs. Blood incompatibility within a few too so parent cats have to be blood typed before mating. Cross breeding is frowned upon. As moggy's are not bred specifically but rather in feral cat situations or by accident when owned it is unknown how many die at birth due to genetic factors or if they are prone to certain things the same as purebreds. It may simply be a case of survival of the fittest. Doubt reliable statistics/studies are available on this question. -
Peta Planning To Open An Office In Australia
Christina replied to gundoglover's topic in In The News
After reading those statements to the press I have to wonder why Australia is allowing them to set up an office here ? Do they know about these statements ? If not, why not ? Regardless of agreeing with their aims or not their methods of obtaining them are so extreme, dangerous & illegal an office should not be allowed here. Scary stuff.
