  1. Too soon to get a new dog, they have not got over losing this one & your dog may well turn up yet. Children don't get over things quickly. Depends on the children. I can remember the day my frog died 50 years ago Making every effort to find your dog, rewards, posters etc & getting them involved may make them feel they are doing something & less helpless. Saying prayers for the dog & help, if they are this way inclined. Let them talk about it as much as they want , years ago silence was the rule for tragic & upsetting things & that made it all worse inside bottled up. Time heals & makes the pain less but it can't be hurried. Up to the individual. I hope by some miracle your dog is found or turns up, it can happen.
  2. sorry but can't help it. When its really wet I say to mine out for piddles & they all stand, stop at the door & look up at me as if to say Are you crazy, in this. Annoying when they are yakking for in & out several times, mine just did this, its raining a lot.
  3. Pups going to new home at 12 weeks is fine. My little ones are desexed before they go so may be with me until they are at least 10 weeks & sometimes 12 weeks for girls & extra tiny ones. This has never been a problem. Full socialisation is not possible until vaccs are complete, which they can't be at 8 weeks, so mine are taken out carried or in a doggie pram from 6 weeks old. No problem bonding with owners & house training, lead training, grooming etc already started so its easier for them. The few weeks make no difference at all to settling in a new home.
  4. They let dogs into cafes all over Europe & most other countries. Would be great here. Many people would complain though. Australia is most unfriendly for dogs & their socialisation.
  5. States vary but in SA all litters must be registered. So should come with papers limited or main. Registration here is a fairly small cost about $24 for litter reg + $20 something $'s, small variation for limited or main per puppy, so papers should not be hundred of $'s extra anyway. They have just brought in a new thing here dog shows for desexed dogs. Expect a price variation for breed/show dog & a pet sometimes , not unusual depending on breeder.
  6. Go to this link http://www.alv.org.au/storyarchive/0504prisoners/index.php & ask if they are aware or acting on this matter. They have been active in stopping Ron Wells before & info of the 2007 campaign is on the opening page. They know the procedures & do their very best. Absolutely disgusting the whole dirty business.
  7. Variable. My pups done at 10 to 12 weeks act like nothing has happened but a 2 year old I had done was in pain, only 2 stitches, & I got pain relief for him on day 2 when I realised. Another was fine. Depends how the dog reacts to being knocked out too, even though its quick. One thing is to not let them out anywhere that they can dirt into the small wound for a couple of days & keep warm.
  8. So if the dog is a chronic barker, the neighbours complain to the council, all efforts have been made to stop the problem. the dog cant be rehomed because of the problem, the owners cant afford to move to acreage what do they suggest ? Tie its mouth up or euthanise it ? How bloody stupid. Death is better than a simple procedure if performed by a vet ?
  9. I dont support the RSPCA either but they should have done the job properly. I doubt very much that the photos shown & the footage shown on the news was invented or photoshopped. These cows were starving & in a shocking state. Hundreds of them. Now the owners get compensation, so they got away with it. Does anyone think they will spend the money on feeding the cows ? Not a victory IMO.
  10. So I gather you actually saw the animals and followed the whole of the court proceedings? From what I saw, photos & info on the news & papers it sure looked like there was cause for concern ? As the graziers are wealthy & have business interests to protect they can afford to sue over a bungled point of law. I have to wonder what the outcome would have been had it been a poor person. Either way its another big stuff up that cost money & did not benefit any animals.
  11. Is the dog stuck ? My only suggestion once you get the dog out it to enclose the area that's open under your house with trellis, or aviary wire so it can't happen again. Mine is raised & I have done this. Keep the dog out of your neighbours property. Good luck, hope it comes out soon.
  12. Hope you asked who the vet was so you can tell everyone to keep away from them. Bloody disgusting, thank goodness she had the sense to ignore that. I would not advise an 8 week old pup be left alone with a chicken neck though. They can get stuck or choke at that age especially the small breeds. My adult cat got one stuck in a back tooth & was very distressed & drooling. Only to be fed when you are home.
  13. The fact that you are worried & have posted here & given what you have posted I guess you already know what you should do Ask for your deposit back as the breeder cannot guarantee you a healthy puppy. Good luck in getting it. If you can't get it back walk away. The long term expense & possible heartbreak will be much greater.
  14. After the AI's did you get her vet checked at any stage to see if she was actually pregnant ? If not it could be that she was & re absorbed or aborted early & cleaned up well. Re the stud. Some dogs let any dog mate but others have to know or make friends with dog first. Was she on a lead ? Sometimes you have to put the bitch on a lead & put your hands under the belly to make them stand. Some breeders muzzle too, I wouldn't but my dogs are only small. Maybe timing was out, some wont accept a male until 3 weeks into the season, despite recommendations for 10 to 14 days generally. Sometimes for some unknown reason a dog wont accept one stud but may be willing with another. Many reasons no easy answer. All I can think of, is if possible, get her used to the stud, walk them together, sleep them next to each other etc. Hard if it is not your dog though. Maybe get someone here to point you in the direction of a good repro vet that is close you for further investigation & advice.
  15. No help here as I am confused about this too. My maiden bitch was 12 days in, flagging slightly & experienced stud dog eager for last 3 days but she was too skitish to mate. Going on holiday next day so I took her in for AI. No time. Vet did a prog test & inseminated her as I had no time to wait for result. Phone call 2 hours later told me levels were 67 & I had missed the crucial time, pups were highly unlikely. She must have been very quick & the male was going crazy. That was 2 weeks ago. Fingers crossed even if useless
  16. I would not take a deposit that is not refundable or before pups are even born & would not pay one but you have already done it now. How long you wait for a pup is up to the breeder completely now. It may be that things have gone wrong, sometimes a mating does not take & the dog is not pregnant, there may be a problem with pups or other people get a pup before you. Who knows ? Its not hassling to ask the breeder to inform you when a litter is due & ask them to inform you when to reasonably expect a puppy. You now have a choice of waiting or lose your deposit & go elsewhere however you can ask if you may have your deposit back as you did not get a puppy when expected. You may be lucky. Not wise to do this again.
  17. Yes. 5 dogs & many cats & sometimes kittens. They will sleep in a big pile on the lounge all wrapped up, in each others beds or where ever, kittens, when old enough & supervised, will hop in with the dogs. 4 cats & 3 dogs here, I think, not a rare sight here
  18. Not a thing differently. Happy with all. People expect & want various things from their dogs. I dont think training school or personal trainer is essential for mine as I train to what I expect from them for the lifestyle here. For some they may want more or be unable to train themselves. Its personal choice how & what you do. It must suit your dog & your lifestyle. There is no one right way for every aspect of bringing up a puppy. As long as you are all happy & everything is under control enjoy your puppy. Have confidence in rearing him/her & seek help if you have a problem. When you seek help & advice think carefully about it & consider if it is sensible & kind. If not ask elsewhere.
  19. Sorry you lost your dog My view is that all children should be brought up with dogs as long as they have not got stupid parents. A stupid parent includes ones that know they would have trouble coping with a young child & a dog. If someone doubts they could cope they are wise to acknowledge this & wait. It is not for everyone. If you feel able to cope & can understand the boundries that have to be in place I don't think age of child matters at all. Breed of dog does. A toy breed or dominant breed is obviously unsuitable but I can't see any reason why a Lab would not suit at all. Ideal family dog so as long as you are confident you can train & control the dog & teach your child to behave & respect the rules I think its lovely for them to grow up together. I was brought up with dogs from being a baby & so were my children. We all knew & obeyed the rules.
  20. Ok, hope all is well but please have blood tests done on Indy your older girl too. Vet did not find a problem on 1 of my dogs it surfaced 6 months later however if I had done the blood tests it would have been found but I just got a general check up not suspecting anything really I was just puzzled at the change in temperament & thought she may be sore somewhere I didn't know about. It was cancer, however don't think the worst. 2nd dog was starting with some scoleosis in his back which was making it sore. Not serious life threatening, He lived another 3 years before going downhill from other things.
  21. Not heard of it in dogs but it can happen with cats. One cat of mine had a kitten & then a day & half later had another 2, all fine, which is why when I do matings there are only over 2 days when I am sure & see its happening. Curious over how many days you mated your dog ? As dogs can conceive from dual sires they obviously can carry from seperate matings. I wonder if pup was conceived from 1st try & others from later try. Possible ? Whatever reason its a miracle that ended well for sure. Good luck with the rest of them
  22. Born in the lounge in a big cardboard box which mum just hopped in & got it all over in an hour. Then put a 6 panel puppy pen around it & stayed there most of the time. It was heatwave time so a few times I moved them to a cooler room for short spells checking thermometers in other rooms. Try not to move them until eyes are open usually.
  23. Have they always done this ? Or is it a new thing ? If its a new thing get Indy vet checked. On 2 occasions in the past I have had a younger dog fight with an old dog when they had lived together for years with no prior problems. I seperated them totally but both older dogs did have health problems which surfaced some time after but would have been underlying / starting at the time.
  24. Another disgusting story but what I can't figure out is How can the RSPCA remove all those dogs from the registered tibbie breeder re the debarking fiasco, who were in good condition & well looked after in comfort yet They can not remove these particular dogs who are obviously living in horrendous & inadequate conditions ? Where were the vet, police & TV cameras when they checked this horror place out ? Are the rules made up as they go along ? Sick world. Poor dogs.
  25. Advertise as suggested or breed rescue. Always ask a token fee. If you put no value on the dog some idiot may be tempted by a freebie. If the home does not work out they will come back to you if you offer a refund. Freebie not working out can end up in pound & euthanised. If you find the right home this will not happen. Ask relevant questions when you get an enquiry & if you think the home is good suggest you do a home visit with the dog 1st. Less stress for the dog if you do 1 visit for a short time, at least an hour. Then take the dog home & tell them they can have her in a few days. This way the dog is not going into a completely strange place & it gives you a chance to check all is as portrayed over the phone. Send dog to new home with an old jumper or t shirt you have worn & some familiar things, toys, bedding etc. Helps settling a little. I have done this with the only 2 young adult dogs I have ever rehomed. Both lovely people, all was perfect & they did keep in contact, 1 visited me twice & let me know all was well. If it had not been satisfactory I would have just said sorry this is not going to work out for the dog. Good luck in finding a nice home, 3 moves is enough for a dog for sure.
