  1. No from me too. Apart from whats posted my mummies would go nuts if another adult dog was brought into the home near their babies. They are friendly girls who are all over everyone but wouldn't be with another adult dog in here. It would just upset them all.
  2. It appears from your initial post that you did not get your puppy with the intention of breeding ? Choosing your 1st breeding dog is a minefield for someone just starting out. Registered breeder, shows dogs is not enough knowledge to choose your foundation bitch from. You need to know what is behind the lines in the pedigree, health issues that can crop up that are not able to be tested for & a lot more than just its a pedigree so I can breed. Lots of posts on the things that go wrong part & placing them in new homes is not always a delightful part of it all. Consider carefully. Why do you want to breed her ? You have a puppy you love so why risk it all ? Desex her & enjoy having her.
  3. I phoned Roundup customer service line. They assured me that my small dogs would come to no harm even if they chewed on the weeds. Advised keeping off it for a few hours. Have used it quite a few years about monthly in wet weed inducing weather however I don't apply it when I have pregnant girls, you never know. It works well if your garden is too big to hand weed. Buying in 5 litre containers it works out a fraction of the cost of those small ones in the supermarket & garden centres.
  4. If your friend is intelligent she just does not want to listen, understand or acknowledge anything you say. Its basically Been there with many who do know better. She wants an oodle, the lady is nice. Defies all logic & reason really.
  5. I think it is wrong to drag a puppy & never do it if they freeze or wont walk. I just let the puppy sit there & do absolutely nothing if a few words wont make it move. Pup gets bored eventually & moves then it praise, no treats. The longest time was about 7 minutes & yes its frustrating but they do move eventually. Freaked out by the many road trains at my nearest busy place on occasion I don't pick them up I crouch down & speak in a soothing voice & praise when they get over it & carry on with the walk. Unless they are in danger of strangling themselves then of course you have to pick them up, rarely happens.
  6. Best to have an outside light if possible. Horrid experience years ago with this. Let my 5 poodles out at 1am as they were whinging to go piddle. Complete paved yard no garden beds. One didn't come in when called a minute later. Went out & picked her up & she was limping. Nothing to hurt herself on out there. Then she had a small fit & started frothing at the mouth. Rushed to emergency vet. Treated for suspected spider bite. Next morning I had a look around & on the back porch there was a small pipe that came out of the ground & through the brick wall for water or gas. Behind it was a big red back spider. The culprit I guess. Glad she is ok but sometimes the unexpected can just happen.
  7. No point in asking if they have not got any other pets or have not had a dog for years. Questions to ask Have they had your breed before. Have they any other pets. Maybe if they have an irish wolfhound you may not want them to have a chihuahua puppy too Age of children if relevant to breed size & type. Awareness of grooming requirements if a long haired breed. Intentions for dog, pet desexed, breed, show ? Inside or outside dog.
  8. I won't sell a puppy on main register to a novice exhibitor who may or may not show, if I think they lack commitment they don't get the dog, the last thing a breeder wants to do with a promising puppy is to hand it over to a newbie who purports to be keen, but ends up doing a few shows and then gives up and has the puppy desexed because it's a nuisance owning an entire animal. This happens all the time even if the puppy buyer has signed a contract or the puppy is co-owned. People on DOL are always whinging about the shortcomings of breeders, but believe me puppy buyers can be just as unethical as some breeders. I don't understand the above ? The puppy may be promising but obviously not promising enough which can become evident after a few months & a few shows, not at time of placing in the new home. The puppy may not like the shows, not all develop the love & desirable reaction to it all. The novice exhibitor may not like the shows when they have been to a few. So the new owner desexes & has a pet & they both live happily ever after. What is so wrong with that ? Should the puppy be sold on ? because it is too good to be just a pet ? Should it be forced to shows when it is either not up to scratch or hates the whole thing ? Should the new owner be forced to show even though it is a miserable experience for them ? Should the new owner be forced to keep the dog entire when it is better off being desexed & more sensible ? Sometimes breeders will run on a dog & show for a few shows & then decide not to show this particular dog for various reasons. I would call a puppy buyer unethical if they did not love & care for the dog & put its physical & mental welfare first. Showing the dog is not part of that equation. It is something else.
  9. Main reg means you can show or breed. Limited reg means you can't but Canine Associations are now starting shows for desexed dogs which was not allowed before. Although limited registration is non breeding it still does not stop the unscrupulous. They will either breed the dog anyway & sell pups as pet & show the buyer a copy of the parents pedigree. Just means the pups can't be registered. Not much protection for the dog or lines really. If a person genuinely wants a quality pet from a good breeder limited registration should not put them off. It does not mean the dog is inferior quality it just means the breeder would like the dog to have a pet home as opposed to show/breed.
  10. :p Bit like when you can't get those child proof tops off & a 10 year old does it for you.
  11. Should you risk it. The risk is to the dog. Long journey, heat, strange & not very comfortable environment I imagine, unknown people, lots of other dogs around, stress, may give birth completely alone in the night etc. Wouldn't put a dog through it.
  12. My tiny babies started eating on day 22. They are 5 weeks old today & are on about 5 small meals a day. One mum stays in with them all night, the other won't. They feed pups about twice a day & soon hop out when fed up. Diet is raw mince, raw steak, small chopped cooked chicken, tiny bit of mashed vegies, a little cooked liver & heart but not daily, advance rehydratable soaked, optimum canned puppy & a daily vitamin supplement. They did enjoy roast pork & roast vegies one day. I don't use any milk at all. Try not to make them fussy eaters & they are happy with anything put down for them. Mums were on 4 small meals a day + unlimited dry but cut that last week as they wanted the meat, chicken & vegies all the time. 2 meals a day now they are not feeding as much + unlimited dry Proplan & Advance. Teats checked daily, no hardness.
  13. Vets day 2 to 5. Couldn't & wouldn't do it myself. I believe the whole thumb joint is actually removed not just the nail, or they grow back. I wait outside, they do shriek a bit & I can't bear it.
  14. I can't figure out how you can make the amount of money they say you can. Work out how many dogs a day you would have to do, the time to do them then add on travelling time. It doesn't add up unless all your jobs were within 10 minutes of each other. I know someone who had a franchise with some company ? They said all jobs they sent had to be taken & sometimes there was an hours travel in between them. They were trying to get rid of it. Training was fast, shonky & inadequate too. A beginner can't groom out, wash, bath, dry, clip, do nails & pluck ears on a small poodle for example in an hour or so like someone experienced. Big & difficult dog handling can be daunting at first too, alone. Think carefully & do the sums.
  15. And whilst I agree that good breeders do have experience in many aspects of puppy health , things like parvo/coccidia infections/coronavirus are NOT things they can adequately handle without veterinary intervention. A new pup owner , a breeder some distance away ... the Vet is the best person to see. This poor pup probably should still be in Hospital , but as finances are tight, the owners are trying their hardest to cope at home Not a good situation for anyone, really. A good vet is worth their weight in gold. They spend about 5 years training so are not stupid or ignorant on puppy health problems, dogs & cats are the majority of their clients. Behaviour problems are another issue. There are trainers & breeders for this. While some are not very good at their job there is always another one to ask for a 2nd opinion if you are not satisfied with treatment or care. Breeders have experience but are not medically trained & can't do diagnostic tests or prescribe medication. Breeders opinions & knowledge are variable too. You don't have time to mess about or dither with a young sick puppy that is not eating. They can go down fast. Contact a vet if things do not improve. Some one on this forum will be able to point in the direction of a good vet in your area if needed.
  16. Weigh your puppy daily, they can drop weight so quick & you may not realise. Hop on the bathroom scales & weigh yourself, then again with puppy in your arms. Write it down daily to keep track. Dehydration is bad, check he drinks plenty. Try warming food first, makes it smell more appealing & tempting. Much longer this way I would phone the vet & if he needs to go in again ask if you can arrange payments. I would not ask the breeder this needs the vet if it continues.
  17. Disgusting bastards. The dog needs the vet they may have kicked it & cracked or broken ribs even though injuries aren't visible. If it had been a break in where they just shut the dog in a room or ignored it the dog would not be this scared.
  18. Nooooo. The RSPCA may say it is cruel, not in the animals best interests, the dog is not enjoying it, how is the dog affected mentally ? were methods used to train humane & approved ? Dance while you can doggie
  19. I had a 9 year old done with no problems but toy breed. If it will stop the prostate problem I would say yes, after pre op blood work. If not why bother ? he will probably get fat unless his diet is drastically cut & then his arthritis will become a problem.
  20. Well we already have the government dictating how we train/discipline our children. They are also getting to the point of telling us what we can & cannot feed them. That's working really well isn't it ? No suprise it is now animals. There is concern over methods & cruelty used to train animals & there are laws in place to deal with this issue, but that is not entirely what they are looking at. Suspicious too. Better things to use their money on. In the future I may get prosecuted if I ever teach my Cockatoo to dance to his favourite tune & talk. Insane world coming up
  21. ;) Wonderful news whatever the story/facts. He is alive & ok that's the main thing.
  22. Gorgeous little man My breed can be yappy & its not because they are bored or alone so the quiet command is a must. The biggest problem is getting their attention when they are on a roll like when the willy wagtails torment, just out of reach of course Clapping hands, using a whistle or making a noise to distract with anything so they look at you is the 1st step. Then its Quiet in a firm voice followed by praise, good boy quiet, & a quick no or ahh ahh Quiet again if they persist. They soon learn but the dog has to understand what it is that you want or it can't obey. I don't so speak, they speak enough to let me know what they want. ETA Just read the link in other post. Uses the same method I do but I don't use treats ever, dog may bark for another treat.
  23. Not joking, everything just sits on me. Look, no wonder I was all hot & flushed.
  24. I want to know why they sit on me Dozed off on the sofa one day & was dreaming I was being suffocated. I was. Woke up to find 1 dog asleep on my head, a cat across my neck, 2 dogs on my chest & belly, a cat on my crutch & 2 dogs on my legs & feet. There were 2 other sofas & 3 dog beds there for them. All empty.
  25. Suprise. Pretty good on the Toy poodle. Had to laugh at the comment about how they can be clipped to look like "normal" dogs, forget the silly show ring clips Not sure about them being ideal for agility, while they are very lively & agile it would have to be geared to their small size. Overall a fairly accurate review.
