  1. Not entirely accurate. The breeder puts the dog on limited because they don't want the dog to be bred from or shown for many reasons. My breed is the most in demand for puppy farmers, asian market & BYB's so they go with limited papers & desexed. Couple have gone to a trusted, long time breeder friend but many of the limited / desexed ones were certainly nice enough for show & breed. Unfortunately some dogs are on main register that shouldn't be shown or bred from. Back to original post I would advise never to put a deposit on an unborn litter or until you have met your puppy. Once you meet the breeder & puppies it is wise to place a deposit but not beforehand. Desexing contract is a common request & fair enough. If you want a show or breeding dog you should be honest & say so. If you don't believe in desexing dogs at all you need to find a breeder who agrees with this. Times change.
  2. It depends whether he is going to be left in the yard unsupervised & what is in your yard that could be a danger to him. If you are with him & at home & there is nothing toxic or unsafe I think its better for puppy to run, play, exercise, explore & stretch his limbs. You can stop him & teach discipline if he starts digging etc. A puppy safe room inside for periods alone is also better than a crate. I am not a fan of confinement however it does need to be done in some circumstances. My breed are so tiny as babies they could get their heads stuck under the sofa until about 8 weeks old  so pens & confinement to safe areas is needed under obvious circumstances. If your yard is safe why confine. He is a big dog & he may dig & be destructive if you confine & let him loose in a year anyway. Best to supervise & learn now. Everyone has their own way. Choose which way you are happy with.
  3. Some do dream & make noises. One of mine lies on her back & gallops in her sleep sometimes. Its hilarious. It may be a noise she hears that you can't hear that disturbs her but if she is ok in every other way I wouldn't worry about it.
  4. I am curious as to what the isolation test is, how long etc ? Not sure what others do but I wouldn't normally isolate a puppy at 7 weeks. Also what is done to assess stress response ?
  5. No matter what their side is the facts & outcome still remain the same. They were told to keep the dogs apart or they would fight. They didn't. The dogs did fight. The dogs got injured. They charged the client the vet bill. Not impressive no matter what their side or excuses are.
  6. Your puppy must be around 5 or 6 months old so there is no reason not to desex him now before he leaves you. There is nothing wrong with using the free advertising sites at all. Lunatics & odd balls can answer an ad from anywhere, even this site. Be sure to put a price on your puppy, giveaway does insinuate that the person doesn't care & only wants to be rid of the pet. Word your ad in a caring way that makes your pet seem important, well loved etc. Screen any replies sensibly & ask as many questions as you feel you need to. Asking for a home phone number contact is better than only a mobile. Last but not least if you find someone you feel is suitable ask if you can do a home visit. Say that you would like to visit with the dog so it is not walking away with a stranger & that you will do a short visit & take the dog home so it is not in a strange place when it leaves. if you like the place & feel happy leaving the dog you can change your mind & leave it. If you are not happy take the dog home & say whatever. It how you deal with responses that matters not where you advertise. Good luck. Sounds like you are full on with everything.
  7. OMG I cannot understand why it would cost so much. A dislocation is just pushed back into place & then xrayed to ensure its set right in animals but not usually in humans. Depending on where there is either a local injected, like when my son dislocated his toe, or a short anaesthetic for bigger bones. Finding someone experienced is the key & then its relatively simple. Even at the human hospital it took ages to find a doctor who had fixed a dislocation. Animals are unpredictable even when well trained if something triggers them off to run & sometimes we don't know what it was. On lead unless in a fenced or isolated area is always wise. Accidents happen but hopefully your dog should recover easily from this. Once the bones back in place there is no more pain or trouble, its instant relief. Buy a lottery ticket. I just went at that cost.
  8. I know there are fines for unregistered dogs but I didn't know they can fine you for the dog not being desexed ? I thought it was still owners preference on desexing ?
  9. Your friend needs to phone a lawyer for legal advice first thing in the morning. As neither dog was hurt & the other dog shouldn't have been on the reserve either I doubt it will be seized & PTS but friend should be sure of her legal rights before the rangers visit.
  10. If she was dumped & you are 100% sure I would keep her. Most kittens at the pound get euthanised. I doubt anyone will prosecute you. You haven't kept or stolen someones pet. Kitten seem very unimportant in the general scheme of the world
  11. Its all too sad. If you can't get better treatment for her & light at the end of the tunnel I think euthanasia may be the kindest thing you can do. Life in a crate in pain is no life. Nerve pain is excrutiating. Hope the steroid gives relief.
  12. Don't be too concerned about it, at yet. It may be the implant & as the vet said but 2 of my older girls have had an odd split season in the past, not every season. No implant used. They reproduced as normal & didn't have any particular problems. Sometimes I wonder if its the weather
  13. How infuriatingly frustrating for you & your poor dog. I can't recommend a specialist not having any experience but I have had several steroid injections & while it doesn't cure the relief is amazing. Effects lasted from 10 days to 23 days & just getting some sleep helped so much. So it can't do any harm & your dog will feel better, even if temporarily. Questions I would be asking is Do you trust the initial MRI interpretation & diagnosis. Was the specialist influenced by the report & diagnosis from the original clinic/vet. Apart from not walking how much is this affecting the dog ? Does she have normal appetite ? Is she alert & interested in her surroundings & whats going on even if not walking ? Does she cry or groan in pain ? Does she have to be in a crate ? Can't she just lie on a big cushion on the floor with the choice of moving if & where she wants ? I wouldn't euthanise this quickly unless the dog is really in extreme pain, not eating, lethargic & miserable etc. I would try another specialist & start with a clean slate & not mentioning or referring back to the others for a new & unbiased approach. Outcome may be the same but you don't know unless you try. Best of luck.
  14. Maybe the gate wasn't latched properly but you will never know. I guess you had to pay the bill to retrieve your dogs. The small claims court is the way to go if you would like to try & recoup the vet bills. May be worth it or not, depending on the fees involved, of which I have no idea. You must be absolutely furious after your specific instructions. Its not impressive really.
  15. Its really time for them to upgrade security at all major dog shows world wide. Even here in sleepy old Adelaide a dog was stolen. Who knows what really happened, we will have to wait for more news but there seem to be more nutcases around now regarding animals than there ever was. Its all quite disturbing.
  16. I would imagine that most people would only make comments if they thought that the old dog was in pain or reluctant to walk however I have never had a negative experience. Years ago I had an old poodle that had severe arthritis who couldn't walk much however not wanting her to miss out I made a pushchair from a wire shopping basket on wheel by cutting a viewing panel out of the front & sitting her in it on a cushion, we didn't have the doggy prams back then, so pushing her along the footpath at the beach with another dog or 2 on leads she got so much fuss & attention & absolutely loved it. Some people are very ignorant though & all you can do is ignore them & enjoy your walk.
  17. For a few litters of dumped over my fence 4 week old kittens I used a weak dilution of Martha Gardeners Wool Wash to bath them & then went over every part of them using a human nit comb & repeated the next day. Block the ears if possible with some cotton wool as with heavy infestation fleas will run in the ears when you bath them.
  18. A few months ago I got a 15 month old female for breeding. Gorgeous little girl & happy with her in every way however the breeder said she had not had a heat cycle at all & this line often have their 1st season at around 2. Never experienced this as this breed normally come in by around 10 months. Have to say she is very puppy like & silly & my male is more interested in her than any of my other dogs, playing, rough & tumbling with her, play mounting & both dancing up on back legs but this is not recent he has been like this with her since day 1. Vaccination due soon so I will get her checked but what can they say about it ? I don't want to go the hormone route I have heard about as I believe if the dog doesn't breed naturally I would rather not breed from it. Has anyone else experienced this with toy breeds & did the dog cycle normally after the first season ? Not applicable to larger breeds as I know they often take longer to mature but toy breeds are different in that respect.
  19. On each others mouths & faces ? My girls often do this to each other & wash each other eyes but the boys never do it.
  20. Given the cruelty that goes on regarding the mass slaughter & disposal of greyhounds of no use or past their use by date in this so called sport it is no suprise that live bait is being used. When huge sums of money are involved ethics & scruples often go out the window. I wish they would ban the sport but it will never happen. Multi billion dollar industry.
  21. Pleased you are settled. It must have been awful for you. I have no idea why people are so rigid in their rental pet rules. Wrecked rentals I have heard of have all been wrecked by people not pets.
  22. Yes the dye is normally used for pet meat & has been for as many years as I can remember. Usually you only see a blob of it now & then on an odd piece if you see it at all. If you are getting a green layer on the top maybe he is a little too enthusiastic in his use of it.
  23. Sounds to me like no one knows the accurate facts about this dog & what was done with it or what agreements were made. The only accurate fact is that it attacked the lady. The USA is the land of sue them all, anyone will do, in many cases so I am not sure what I think about all this except dog needs to be PTS.
  24. It is not illegal to sell unregistered dogs of any breed or combination or even unknown breed. Registered can mean registered in one of several places & many of the public don't understand it all. There is no attempt to deceive in the ad as far as I can see even though pedigree breeders disagree with the principles & ethics. We cannot control what everyone else does but we can educate the public, which is not done enough. I think ANKC should advertise advantages & difference in pedigree dogs & explain it all with TV adverts. Once I saw an ad on Gumtree from an ANKC registered breeder advertising show quality pedigree toy poodle puppies. Some were phantom/parti so there is no way the pups could be show quality as only solid colours are allowed to be shown. I think that is more dishonest than the ad being discussed here.
  25. My advice is do not discard or dismiss a breeder because they don't show. Many breeders who do not show may have dogs that are suitable for show. There may be many reasons why they don't show. Here are some. They don't enjoy it. They can't cope with grooming a show coat but can manage a tidy pet clip. Location makes it difficult. They have no one to help them manage gazebo/tents & carrying all that is needed. They have problems tolerating weather conditions. They may have transport or mobility problems that affect it, especially traveling distance They are shy & not confident. They can't cope with the competitive & political part. They breed to a good standard of conformation, health & temperament but don't place much value on showing dogs. I have seen many good dogs not in the ring that could be very successful, its just not everyones cup of tea so know your standard well which is much easier to judge if you can see dogs in pet clips. Work in a groomers, even one day a week, that gets poodles in if possible, you will learn so much about conformation & its variations hands on & when they are in the bath Much more than looking at a few immaculately show clipped groomed poodles at a show. Once you understand what you are looking for you will know when you see a good prospect in a puppy. Contrary to many opinions of other posts as I doubt you will be able to handle, help or get much time with people at shows. They are far too busy preparing & don't want their dogs touched. Its easier & more relaxed with short haired breeds generally.
