  1. The dominant girl had 3 litters (many years ago) not once would she mate at home. Had to take her off the premises every time & then no trouble. Hope it turns out to be something simple as that was. Took a bit of thinking to figure it out though. Boys going mad & her flagging to the side when I ran my hand down her back were good indications. Total lack of interest on both sides needs the vet.
  2. You need to go to a good vet who has experience in dog reproduction. That has to be the first step. No one on a forum would know why she won't stand except to guess that hormones/timing is wrong. This may be the case or not. The bitch needs checking internally as well. One of mine could not mate because she had a stricture. Not a breed known for strictures especially but it can occur with any dog. Another would not mate at home & actually snap at the males but in a different home she was fine & willing, even on the same day. You could try taking them both to someone elses home. May work if its a dominance issue, who knows. Could be many reasons. Post & ask for recommendations of a good reproduction vet that you can get to. Someone here will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.
  3. No, a puppy that age needs 3 meals. A puppy won't generally over eat, it all goes into growing. They should have a little covering of fat but not be obese naturally. Ribs showing a bit is ok on some adult breeds of dog but not on puppies. Not all dogs eat & gobble up food in one go although this is convenient for the owners. For the pup its no difference. If you want to do 2 feed of meat or wet food you need to leave puppy dry down all the time. Grazing is fine, pups tummy is only small, small & often is a common way of eating for puppies, given the choice. She will go onto just 1 or 2 meals a day as she grows up. They all do no matter what the pup feeding routine. Your alternative to having her in your room could be ear plugs
  4. Putting puppy in a crate won't work, she is already confined & wants out so smaller confinement is pointless. Trouble is they can't tell the time. Mine get me up at unearthly hours too sometimes & they are various ages between 1 & 9. She is only a baby I would put her in with you. Move anything chewable or dangerous & if she won't sleep in your arms let her play on the floor, she probably has been on her own long enough & wants new mummy. I don't do tough with babies
  5. Very difficult to get numbers/statistics etc as so much of this kind of thing is undercover/hidden. They don't exactly advertise the facts. Maybe start here http://www.alv.org.au/storyarchive/0504prisoners/index.php They may be able to give you specifics if you contact them. Good luck.
  6. I wouldn't be nailing anything to the floor. If the bedding is ripped up & a nail is still stuck to it, possible, your dog may get the nail in its mouth or swallow it by accident while playing/ripping up the bedding. A dog that is not used to a coat may also struggle partly free & strangle or get caught up. A bale of straw is cheaper & safer & good mulch for the garden if it doesn't do the trick.
  7. Had a look at this out of interest. Curious. As the test is only for allergy to 6 foods & only 1 is meat is it not as easy to just not give your dog any of these 6 foods, which are not essential to the diet anyway, for 2 weeks to see if they improve. Then if they do introduce one of the suspect foods at the rate of one a week if you feel they must have it, to see if there is a reaction.
  8. Small size soft metal slicker brush. Don't get the puppy size, its useless after a few weeks. "Soft" can be variable according to quality so choose a quality brand & if your pup really kicks up about the brushing try the brush along your own arm & on your own head to check it is not too scratchy or your technique of using it is correct. If you are sure you are happy about using the groomer nearby maybe go in & introduce yourself & puppy & ask them if they can show you how to use the brush. A trained puppy that is brushed regularly is easier for them, & less stress for your puppy too. Gives you a chance to see how they are too. Metal comb with half the teeth spaced wider at one end to be used after the slicker.
  9. Go to the vet today. Lymphoma can occur that fast but it may be something else. You won't relax & will be absolutely panic stricken if grows bigger. Good luck.
  10. Guess sometimes people may feel overwhelmed by all the expectations & all the things we are told we must do & all the things we must have & get. I see puppy, hold it & love it. That's as far as my mind goes at first. I know the other stuff that needs doing & it kicks in after the initial wonderment. You have to accept a dog for what it is, whatever that is. Maybe it was all too soon for you to have another puppy.
  11. Not advisable to use anything for fleas & worms on a pregnant bitch unless there is reason to do so. I worm them just before mating. If there is a flea or worm problem I would ask the vet what is safe to use.
  12. My poodles get bathed every 2 weeks most of the time. They are in short coat in the summer & long coat in the winter. The oldest is 9, no skin problems & I use human shampoo & conditioner sometimes, often pantene but others too. I have never used any kind of flea/chemical type wash on them. When I have owned short coated dogs I didn't wash them as often. Depends on the dog.
  13. None as bad as those posted but was not impressed by someone who had lost a very old dog to illness 2 days prior to phoning me & they kept referring to the dog as IT Posts so far are scary, it really is whacko world sometimes.
  14. Regardless of the what, whys & wherefore of it all if the breeder has taken the pup back & agreed to refund the money they should keep their word. If they did not intend to refund they should not take the pup back. That is dishonest no matter what the circumstances. A matter for the small claims court if it can't be resolved by asking, which seems to be the case.
  15. Those days are gone now. We didn't know what resource guarding, prey drive & other various terms meant really, we never heard them or had all these experts on training, diet & pet care or the media pressure to buy every food & chemical to prevent our pets getting everything possible for a dog to get. Funny I never knew one child who got badly mauled & 15 years or more was a common age for a dog to die. Not sure if we maybe hear more about it all due to technology or if there is more problems generally now. What we expect from dogs & pets overall is so much more now somehow.
  16. Nothing except, puppy dry & natural good quality food & more of it as the pregnancy advances. Unless there has been a problem in the past or it is known for sure that the bitch is lacking in something pregnancy is not a good time for trying anything new really.
  17. Suspect my view may annoy people more Children & dogs should never be left unsupervised because the children aren't trained We always had cats & dogs. The german shepherd used to sit by my pram & guard when I was put in the garden for a sleep, which is what they did with babies then. As toddlers we were watched & if we did anything mean or naughty to the dog we were told off or given a very little tap. While the dog was expected to behave & not be aggressive it was not expected to have its tail or ears yanked etc. In an ideal world all children should have pets but if respect & obedience can't be taught to child & dog it won't work, so some should not have dogs.
  18. I keep all other dogs away from pups until they are about 5 weeks old & eating some food. Mums are usually really protective when nursing. I do hold pups & take them, one at a time, to see the other dogs in a seperate room at about 4 weeks just so they know what is there, what the little noises are & why the girls are not mixing with them. Do it with the cats too. Then they are allowed to be near outside the puppy pen at the 5 weeks or so. If they are not good, get over excited etc, no nastiness in mine,I take them away. I also don't let adult dogs that are not mums run with the pups. My breed is small & its so easy to have an accident just playing, so mixing is done but is supervised. Running a pup on or getting a new one in I also do not leave unsupervised until they are at least 6 months old. May sound over cautious but too late after an accident.
  19. I can't find them on there. Search was hopeless. Which section are they in ?
  20. Its a worry but she will probably be fine. Try some tinned dog food crap. Despite the fact its not the best most dogs will eat it. Not sure of the magic ingredient. I had a fussy pregnant one & she loved My Dog cans & turned down fresh topside steak for it.
  21. If you really have to crate her during the day ? try putting the crate in another room away from all the other dogs & where she can't see you. May work. Your mind should not even be going near debarking for this, assuming her playing this game is just getting on your nerves.
  22. Doubt that letting him choose will make them bond. If he was a person that really liked dogs he would have bonded with the ones you have already because you can't help it when they are part of your family. As an example I would never go out & get a bull terrier, just not my kind of dog in looks or any way although I know their natures are beautiful However if circumstances landed one on me I know I would love it in no time. You can't not bond with a dog you have merely because of its breed or looks if you are a true dog lover. So when the time comes I would get what you & the children like & convince him its a wonderful choice.
  23. No I would not use this service. I would not leave my dogs in a strange environment with people I did not know. Also would not mate the dog if I knew I could not be there or have time for the litter. May be ok for kennel dogs that are used to staff, being confined etc but for those that live as pets I can't imagine the stress on them even though pups would be born & survive.
  24. I suppose unless one has time to shop around for quotes there is no way of knowing if this is expensive or not. At least it ended up cheaper than initially quoted. When I am billed for surgery every single item is listed & costed seperately. Even disposal of items. Think this is the usual now for most. I don't even bother asking what anything was. If the dog needed it at the time that's it.
