  1. Tempting as it may be to have something to steady those nerves remember you may have to drive. That's why I toasted the new year in at 6am once. When mum & babies were clearly really settled.
  2. Relax. Essentials are Something to tell you the time. Pad & pen so you know when they are born & if they are contracting for too long, which is the main part. Not important if it was born at 10 past 2 or 20 past really. Emergency vet number & someone to go with you if possible. A sterile pair of scissors. Blankets or towels to rub pups dry or swing if needed. Anything else is a bonus, it will be fine. I delivered a baby on the front seat of a car once & I only had a knife & my cardigan I don't stress about heaps of things in a whelping kit anymore. Hope to hear good news & see wonderful photos soon.
  3. Rescues take dogs out of really bad situations and find them new homes. They have no obligation at all to listen to what the previous owner may want. Rescues are under-funded and run by volunteers. It would be pretty disgusting for somebody who can obviously afford to keep their dog to expect help from rescue, let alone suggest that they then try to tell the rescue who they can rehome to. They have proven themselves to be the type of person a dog shouldn't be sold to, not the sort of people a rescue should take any advice from or be involved with at all. If this dog needs to be rescued, I hope rescue can help, but if rescue does take this dog the last people that get a say in what happens should be the people that dumped the dog. What a horrid attitude. This person has not neglected or abused their dog in any way & is trying to make the best decision for the dogs welfare. I was not meaning for them to dump the dog on a rescue person & neither was anyone else. I know some rescue people that will see if anyone wants a particular breed & help those who need to rehome while the dog is still with the owner. It may be that some people have an illness & have to move for treatment & cannot take their dog but have a few months to sort things out or other scenarios where they can keep the dog for some time & get organised. I doubt very much that the person posting would or wants to put their dog into rescue. We all know how long they get to live, if any time, in some of the larger rescues.
  4. +1 Harsh. The person had a situation with the dogs & did the wrong thing. Not everyone is perfect & knows everything & the right & wrong way to handle it is variable according to whose opinion is given. Even trainers & behaviourists vary in their methods. One thing is obvious these dogs have to be living seperately. This is possible. When done with common sense lots of animals live apart in homes. Cats & birds, dogs & rabbits, dogs & chickens, cats & fish etc. Not all animals are good with each other & these 2 dogs are not either. It does sound like he will work something out so both dogs are safe & kept alive. He came on here for some support & advice & he sure has got some that makes me go
  5. Sink into the grass as close as possible & extend & bend the wire & wrap around the tank. The dogs wont move the last few feet of wire.
  6. I have placed a couple of young adults in new homes. What I did was ask for a small fee then if things go amiss they are more likely to contact you for money back, hopefully. I also did a couple of home visits with the dogs so they didn't feel dumped at a strange place with someone they didn't know, just for an hour or 2, even go for a walk & let them hold the lead & I took the dog to them rather than them take the dog away from its home. Felt it was less traumatic this way. Do it a couple of months before you leave to make sure all goes well. Rescue may help but I would still want to be involved & check the home & people. Good luck, its not easy. I had to stop the car on the way home from taking my last dog, to someone I knew well, because I couldn't stop crying. I couldn't drive. 4 days later she phoned & said I can't believe this, its like he has been my dog & lived here forever. Traitor :)
  7. That place looks great but not happy about the following statement in their info. A bit odd really. Pets may be moved into another room during the stay at the discretion of the resort.
  8. Any links/recommendations appreciated. Longer term for pampered toy poodle. Must have heating/cooling & comfort.
  9. Main register means you can breed & register the puppies & show. Limited register means you cannot show & if you breed, which is not what the breeder wants but it happens, you cannot register the puppies. Limited register may indicate a fault but some are up to standard the same as some on main register are not. My reasons are the same as Allerziets but all pet pups are desexed.
  10. No. I have enough children calling me mum already. Yes. I treat them like children to a degree but not exactly the same obviously. I do call puppies my babies but if they called me mum I would
  11. Go to another vet. Its is your decision how you feed your dog. Everyone has their own ideas about it & they are all different. There is no one right way. The vet should have listened to his heart, checked his ears, teeth, joints etc & took his temperature & vaccinated him if she found him to be a healthy & normal puppy. You have left there feeling like you are doing things wrong & with no confidence. Wrong. Its your dog & its fine & healthy. Find another vet.
  12. It is not required for free to good home or give aways. It is only if you are selling that a microchip is required. If you read the info in the OP it tells you this. In Q & A's
  13. Its easy to find & only about 3 minutes drive from where you come out. Straight up the road towards where the old terminals used to be, no turns just the roundabout & its on your left. Piece of cake. Hope you love Adelaide :)
  14. Think Bunnings compost panels or puppy pens are too fragile for these dogs. I would buy 3 tall permapine posts from a salvage place ( about $8 each ) & sink them in the ground in a triangle shape, one each side of tank & one in the centre & either pack with dirt or use ready mix. Then I would get some heavy duty aviary wire (tall) or sometimes in the salvage places you can pick up strong metal panels like concrete reinforcing, & attach the wire ( similar to the pic in raffikkis post ) to screen the tank off.
  15. You can't find out if he is allergic to anything by swapping & changing his food or by giving him any food that is commercially prepared & bought. If it has 3 ingredients only in it how do you know which one, if any, he is allergic to ? Give him just boiled rice & some steamed chicken breast pieces, no fat. This will not upset his stomach & will allow it to settle down. Only water to drink. Feed this & nothing else for 3 days & see if it stops. No treats, check he isn't eating anything in the garden too. Is your puppy wormed ? If it hasn't stopped after 3 days take a stool sample & go to another vet. It could be anything at all from something wrong internally, to parasite, allergy or just too many diet changes. Allergy is an individual thing not a common one thing trigger.
  16. If your parents have the dog clean & groomed, walk him a few times a week & have him inside & around them for company then they don't have to do anything else with him. They may be bonding despite not being doggy people, it happens. If he is shoved out in the yard & left alone then its different. I would suggest to your parents that he needs desexing so he doesn't pee all over & hump things, the dog may not but they won't know this. Get a price & offer to take him in for them. Plan B take dog, you pay, desex, book in your name. I have never had a vet check a microchip to make sure it is my dog in my name no matter where I have been or for what treatment.
  17. Hope all is ok. Ordinary cat litter won't harm but clumping & crystals are harmful. If your dog has not got it out of her system by now either by vomit or diarrhea I would drive her to another emergency vet now. Keep us posted.
  18. When you breed cats you learn to put everything away & put them in another room when cooking. Big woks are handy to have around. Not to cook in but to turn upside down & put over the hot element until it cools. My toy poodle can clear a 4 foot barrier with ease & jump on the kitchen work surfaces but will only be tempted by meat or chicken. I wouldn't trust any animal near food. I turned my back for 10 seconds once & found my fillet steak in the jaws of 2 cats.
  19. The breed of dog is irrelevant to which clippers to use. They all clip its a case of finding what suits you. I used the Oster 2 speed for years but when they died ( about 15 years on ) I got the Wahl KM 2 speed. These are much better. A nice shape to hold that feels better in my hand & they don't get hot as quickly. Lighter weight too. Basic features are 1 or 2 speed. The shape of the clipper. How quickly it heats up. Can't think of anything else really.
  20. No apart from a little calcium for the few weeks of nursing, after the births. Extra good food during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy & while feeding pups is fine. I am wary of supplements because they can't meet all claims, not sure of the proven actual effects or safety of some & it is in the manufacturers & distributors best interest to sell as much of the product as they can. Why deal with a problem when you don't even know if there is one.
  21. Looking at the possible future I am thinking that people in Australia will not breed dogs or cats anymore. Maybe there will be government run facilities, like laboratories, that produce cats & dogs & people will have to pass an exam & be licensed to own one. All people who want to breed cats & dogs will have to go & live in other countries. More useless rules It used to be easy & uncomplicated being a pet owner, breeding a little harder, now its becoming a regulated nightmare for all & there is still widespread abuse & neglect. As much now, if not more, as there was 30 years ago
  22. What a tragic society we have become. No tolerance for anything really & hurting & killing peoples pets is despicable. What one person may considers a nuisance & keeps them awake may not bother another & that includes children playing, music & neighbours visitors. I believe that one thing that causes the yappy dog problem is that dogs are not welcome in so many public places & areas. A dog that is used to being around strange people & lots going on is less likely to bark. Outside all the time & overnight is no good either. Dogs should be fine alone for 8 hours once past puppy stage. They don't need baby sitters & sophisticated & expensive entertainment. There never used to be all this hassle about dogs years ago. People didn't complain as much & call authorities to sort everything out either. Heartbreaking thing to happen to Lily
  23. Microchipping is not compulsary here in SA yet for dogs or cats. Dogs & cats are advertised here without having to quote a microchip number. Dogs can be registered with the council without a microchip. Not sure on Dogs SA for registering a pedigree litter. Mine are all microchipped anyway but there is no space or request part on the litter reg forms for a microchip number. Every state varies.
  24. Very nice & standing beautifully.
  25. The person who placed the ad may actually be the breeder. The dog is desexed, up to date with everything & obviously well cared for so maybe it was run on & is now available for a pet home. Phone & check if you are concerned but its the not desexed, matted, filthy, neglected looking ones that state pedigree & make good breeder that are the worrying ads. This looks a beautiful dog for someone. I love this breed.
