Need To Find A Good Verterinary Surgeon
Christina replied to piperspal's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have used Noah Crossing at Lewiston for many years & always been very happy with their services & treatment of my animals. Many breeders use this vet. You may need a specialist for your puppy, no idea, however if you would like to phone & discuss their number is 8524 2260. If you prefer to stay on your own there is an excellent caravan park on Highway 1 that allows dogs. I went to see someone there & was quite suprised at how pleasant is was. The very best of luck with you puppy. This must be so distressing for both you & the pup. If you end up in Adelaide I am happy to assist you in any way I can. -
Things Dog People Get Excited About
Christina replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
I get so delighted & over the top with praise when my puppies piddle on the paper or outside. You would think that they had done a mathematical equation. I can't recall being like this when my children went to the toilet or on a potty. Its so crazy. -
Well I hope not. There is nothing unusual about a dog running down the driveway barking if someone is there. They are animals with a protective instinct not animated robots. Out on the street loose & rushing at people is a whole other issue & wrong of course.

Yes it can be annoying & make you jump when they start, especially if its sudden however as long as the gate is shut & the dog cannot get out people are entitled to have their dog in the front yard of their own property. Instinct makes a dog bark bark to protect its property in most cases. If we start banning dogs in secure front yards what comes next ? You can't have children there or a family gathering or a tree that makes people sneeze ? If the dog is 100% secure either walk past & talk to it every day as you do, it may get to know you & shut up, ignore it or cross the street. There is nothing wrong to report. Living in the country can be as bad too. Loose dogs roaming, owners not caring, sheep mauling, jumping fences & no where to take cover if you run into one on a deserted road. Swings & roundabouts really. Always take a big stick on a walk is a good idea.

Can Vaccinating A Pup To Young Be Dangerous?
Christina replied to biglib's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The vet may be involved in the breeding. Some are & mongrel puppy farming too. There are regular ads for my breed by a vet with no papers etc. You can't stop your friend doing anything, you can only advise. So if your friend ignores your advice to buy from this person you can only say the puppy is better off not having a vaccine so young, its useless & maybe damaging. Hopeless case really. If they do take the pup a vet check, vaccine & isolation are the best that can be done. It may not have parvo or anything worse than worms or fleas, hopefully. -
Yes it did this to me when I was on it for 5 weeks but not at first. I did manage to get to the toilet though, 22 times one night was so scared of dehydration & horror diagnosis. After numerous frantic tests which revealed nothing it stopped the instant I came off it. One tentative explanation was that during this time I never had a twinge of my usual constant backache so it may have froze/blocked some of the nerves that control the bladder. The usual backache came back instantly too when I stopped them. An odd experience but no harm done. May be similar for your dog. They can only guess if nothing else shows up to be wrong.

What is even sadder is that there are many more dead dogs. Many are not even euthanised humanely by vets. They are just shot in a field & got rid of Banning both dog & horse racing is the only way it will ever stop. So it won't. Money to be made & taxes always comes before animal welfare.

Just received an email from this company http://www.genesinmotion.com.au/ $1,400 to $2,500 to import from USA. may be worth a look at their website for comparisons.

With the help of friends I built all my cat runs & got all the stuff from salvage yards & garage sales except the wire. I always use new wire & buy it by the roll, its so much cheaper. Chicken wire is far too flimsy & hard to handle so use a tougher grade aviary wire & ring around for prices, variations can be up to $40 for the same wire. For the individual run in the photo with the cat in it we made the plan, measured up & paid an extra dollar per piece to have the steel cut to size. Joined it up with L shaped brackets & tec screws & only concreted in the 4 corner posts with ready set so its all easy to remove & dismantle if I ever need to. The run is about 4.5 metres long. Steel was $4 per metre. Wire $130 per roll. Pavers, roof sheets & door was from garage sales. Came in at about $400. The other huge odd shaped run was a garden feature with the perma pine posts in place. Used some imagination & converted it. Love this, its around 40 feet long & cost was about $600. You could make something similar for your dogs & alter how much was enclosed etc. New sheets of 2.4 metre tin are only $20 at the salvage place here & there are all sorts of interesting materials new & used that can create anything you want. ETA just checked out the 1st kennel kit link above the prices.

Yes ponds attract snakes. My neighbour went to check hers a couple of months ago right down the garden where she hadn't looked for ages. It was empty but muddy & moist at the bottom & had lots of tiny baby brown snakes in it Brown snakes have a territory of a few acres. I used to think if my neighbour over the road saw them they stayed around there. Wrong.

Its only a week & the pups lifestyle changes have been huge. Strange place, strange people, no mum, no litter mates. He may be anxious now but that doesn't mean he will stay anxious forever. He needs a little more time to get used to everything. Some pups are more timid in nature than others but he may come out of his little shell which has been shocked. I would not leave a pup alone crated on a verandah overnight. Its snake season now & they are venturing out all over the place.

Unless you get progesterone levels checked by a vet the only way to find out is to mate her, if she is willing & ready. The first 2 seasons only 3 months apart would not concern me but the 3rd one so soon I would wonder why. If she swells as normal, flags her tail to the side when stroked down her back & attracts the male go ahead & see if she has puppies. If she does not you need to see a vet with good expertise in this area.

Fantastic. Sometimes we don't know whats wrong & it is quite upsetting. I also had a mum not settling, just the once, & not a first time mum. It lasted 4 days. vet check, oxy injection, calcium, moving her etc didn't do anything & then she settled too. Toy poodles are a breed that will not put up with much discomfort or upset without letting us know. Would be so much easier if they could speak. Sweet dreams you must be so tired.

Can't find the code right now but basically In SA it says you must not MATE a bitch before 12 months, so slightly different.

I am not understanding how this question is relevant to the answer. The answer to the question would surely be the same either way ? To breed or not is another issue. I agree with others. No problem but fix the fence. I was asking as reg breeders have more access to mentors and the like, whereas pet breeders are largely alone. If you see my next comment I suggest they ask their mentor if they have one. Ok I am tired now.

A young pup would get so cold with no bedding or only paper & may cry all night & be distressed. Young pups may not be able to hold on, the smaller the pup the harder too. If the pup is not taken out enough in the night it may well pee in the bed, it may also be too dozy or unsure of where it is to get up as well, more so if confined to a place with only enough room to sleep & not move IMO. They do pee in their beds sometimes but it won't be forever. 3 months is still quite young I wouldn't worry too much but no sleeping on your bed yet.

Never used any kennels but the Barossa bed & biscuit has to be the nicest looking kennels for small dogs & cats that I have seen. Here's a link http://www.bedbiscuit.com.au/index.html

It was Gail that did the past thread. Don't know how to find it. I have no idea but go to some country auctions. I saw a hydrobath at one yesterday & another last year. Cheap too.

The Bunnings compost panels can be turned on their side to make a higher pen. Join as many as you want with plastic garden ties & tie/anchor one panel to a table leg, piece of furniture or something to make it more stable. Sometimes I lean it against the back of the sofa but mine is only used for tiny toy pups at a young age. I don't pen at a few months. If a dog is determined to get out you will need something so heavy & bulky you won't want it inside.

Building Towns That Are "no-dog-zones"
Christina replied to bdierikx's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't know much about Koala behaviour but don't they have the potential to become aggressive under certain circumstances ? If it was breeding season & they were in someones back yard would they react to people ? My adult daughter got bitten by one at a petting zoo. We all it was only a small nip though. -

My mind was going along similar lines as I was reading through. The thing is that once we allow this kind of rule to be made in the first place we open the doors for similar or more stringent rules to be made. We set a precedent. A potentially bad one. People pay for their home & land & what goes on in those boundaries should be their business as long as its not horrendous or illegal. Having a dog is not. Society has become so intolerant of so many things to the point of wanting everything controlled. This idea does not appeal to me at all. Re the Koalas. They can hardly be worried about the dogs really, its a smoke screen. The damage is already done with the people & houses. They are the danger. -
Depends on lots of things. If its hot, if he is not desexed, he may be marking rather than peeing lots especially if he can scent a girl on heat somewhere in the air. If he has exercised heaps, what he has eaten, if he is old. What some people think is a lot to drink others may think is normal. Variable from dog to dog too. Like people. I have no ideas how anyone can drink 2 litres of liquid/water a day I can't & there is nothing wrong, others drink more than that. Only the vet can tell you what & if anything is wrong. If you are very worried go back again or get a 2nd opinion.

Meeting A Breeder - Are There Certain Customs Involved?
Christina replied to Ruin Maniac's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not at all. Relax & enjoy it all. No gifts or documents required. -
So what shape person should sit on the chair to test lapdogs  Does this chihuahua, toy poodle or pomeranian look comfortable on this lap :) It wouldn't work for some breeds. I do see your point that as long as dogs fit the breed standard & behave at the shows function & certainly health in the lines have no place but it's difficult to find another way to judge that would suit all. Was only saying to someone yesterday when they were doing my young boy in show clip that I wished poodles could be shown in a pet clip. I hate the show style & its not great for the dog either.
