  1. Steeled myself to look at the ad & photos. Ok its not luxury but I have seen registered breeders facilities that have been far worse than this in the media. People also export their entire dogs to countries where they know that they are kept in far worse conditions than this, with no laws about it at all. The concept of the business is upsetting but at least the dogs aren't crammed into tiny filthy cages with no light or air. They can move & with the right bedding could be warm in winter. Not sure how they would be in excessive heat. They may be brought inside for births & with small puppies, one hopes. Damn thing its not illegal & isn't likely to become so as long as they pay tax, council permits & follow the rules. Maybe if puppy sales in pet shops are banned they will go out of business. One can dream I guess.
  2. The proposed laws in some states are making these kind of places legal & the only place that will be able to produce pups long term. They may make them tweak things a little. People owning & breeding a small number of dogs in the house as loved family members will be against the law. Seems to be what the public wants & approves. Stupid, sad & sick isn't it all.
  3. Its not normal for a dog to come home like this after desexing. I have had many desexed including my 8 year old this year. No shaking, trembling, wobbling or whining at all. She came home alert & acted & ate normally. I crated her in the lounge so she wouldn't jump & was kept in an even temperature for the next 48 hours but that was precautionary not what she wanted. If your dog is not more comfortable in an hour I would be ringing the vet back & considering taking her in. Hope she settles & you both get a peaceful night. If she is not right tomorrow in any way get her checked.
  4. I would just go to another vet. Big stuff up somewhere.
  5. The bunny is back here after being missing for months so that may also be why my old guy was barking. The light coloured wild bunny has hopped around the back fenced off part of my block for years on & off. Sometimes you don't know what is out & about in the night.
  6. I used to have 2 Chihuahuas, a Great Dane & a Doberman. Big dogs were only allowed socialisation with little dogs as pups on my lap. Supervised when together as adults but seperated when we were not there. Was fine apart from a one off incident that occurred when the Doberman was 10. She wasn't well, turned out later to be cancer. Little dog went to pinch a biscuit from her in passing. Big girl did one big snap, no attack. Broke little dogs jaw. Fluke thing really & so quick, they had been friends for 7 years & I was there with them. Its usually ok if you are sensible.
  7. The problem is that you can't figure out why he is barking so its trial & error. Can't you have him in your room & shut the cats out for a night or 2 to find out if this stops him ? Obviously he is not happy about something. I wouldn't see this as dementia unless he is showing many other signs of losing the plot. My dog isn't senile at all. He now knows exactly how to manipulate me perfectly to get his comfy nights now. What about an electric blanket on the mattress under a fitted sheet. Being warm may knock him out & shut him up.
  8. He is getting old & the nights are cold. Sometimes they have to pee more. Sometimes it can be something outside that kicks them off. My 11 year old kept barking persistently at about 4 to 5 am. Solved the problem by letting him sleep in my bed, now all of them want a turn :) No more barking in the night, no more wanting to pee in the night. He sleeps like a baby & I have to drag him out of my bed the next morning. So much for being desperate to go out. Not the solution you want but I bet it would work.
  9. So basically they use Pet Rescue as a private rehoming service? Is that allowed? Seems to be. I was suprised to see a breeders 2 pedigree dogs on there recently showing full pedigree name too. Desexed. I referred someone to them that was looking for this particular breed as they would send interstate & they said they enquired & these dogs had gone very quickly. Back on topic the womans attitude was shocking. She needs reporting to pet rescue. This attitude does not help find homes, puts people off & is absolutely ridiculous re the age.
  10. As a breeder I have re homed a few 1 year old dogs & so I suggest you always visit the prospective home & take your dog with you. Then take the dog back home for a week or a few days. This way you know exactly the kind of place he is going to & it is somewhere he has been before so may be a little less stressful than just being taken away from you by people he hasn't met to a place he hasn't been to. 7 years old & its a huge change. Desex him if not done of course & do put a small price on him. Even $100 so that if he doesn't settle there is more chance they will contact you for their money back rather than take him to a pound. Assuming you would of course take him back. Give them full history on your dog including health, diet, likes & habits & words & phrases he is familiar with. He may not respond to do you need a widdle if you have called it something else, for example. All helps the dog settled in until they get to know & understand each other. I always deliver the dog, after I have done the home visit & invited them to visit here too so they have usually met twice. I find this better for the dog & myself although I always have to stop the car & have a cry on the way home. Good luck. Hope you find somewhere he can be happy.
  11. Depends on if the female is willing here. No progesterone testing. Showing signs of eagerness & flagging around day 10 to 14 they are put together & usually mate. Then again 1 or 2 days later if the female is willing. Sometimes they are, sometimes once is all they tolerate. I never allow them to run together all the time. The girls would get fed up & snappy with the boy at them all the time I wouldn't imagine sperm count would drop as the female won't allow constant mating & the male would be too exhausted. Guess that is a question for the vet though.
  12. The cheap variety stores sell these beds. The large size, as shown in your link, cost me $20 & the smallest size $10 at Cheap as Chips. Shop around at Sams, Go Lo, deals direct & any of the other cheap variety places. They sell them everywhere. I got the big size as mine all jump in together when its cold. Small size was for kittens. Large would be fine as you need a cushion or something in there, the plastic is cold.
  13. I have been desexing my toy poodles at about week 10 for 8 years now. Great feedback, no problems whatsoever & many have kept in contact. They may grow a bit taller but is an inch a big difference ? That's about all it may be in toy breeds. Mentally they are absolutely fine. No incontinence reported & its a nothing operation at this young age, 1 or 2 stitches at most & they come home as though nothing has been done. They are only knocked out for about 20 minutes, if that. The risk of my breed ending up puppy farmed is far bigger than my worries about doing early desexing so I guess that is what you have to weigh up.
  14. I would make the 5pm feed the last one & see what happens. He won't die of starvation without food until the next morning. If you are worried about cutting to 3 feeds either increase the size of them or leave dry food out in between unless he is a piggy, eat all the time breed.
  15. I have never locked a puppy up either. My toy breeds go in a large pen so they don't jump up on the lounge & hurt themselves by falling off or go in a puppy proofed room like the kitchen or spare bedroom. When I had larger breeds I just made the room they were left in safe. Like wires/plugs up high, nothing to chew or choke on in the room etc. I also always leave pups separate from the other adult dogs if I am not there to supervise.
  16. 2 weeks is a short time for him to get used to a drastic life style change. Both you & him are doing extremely well & you sound so sensible & are committed to getting him settled. There is no absolute right way, various methods are frequently used to get the same results & there is no quick, instant fix where the dog will do & be all you want in a day. You are making progress & it will be a little more each day. Take in all the advice & suggestions from everywhere & then choose to use the ones that seem to make the most sense to you.
  17. That is correct however it is good that input is being asked for as breeders do pay a small fee to be on this site. Steves view has its merits & good points too. Maybe it would be better to leave the advertising as it is. Its all getting too hard & restrictive enough.
  18. Pleased the breed club idea has been dropped. There hasn't been a poodle club in SA for many years & I used to love going to their activities so long ago. Toy breeds aren't the best for agility etc IMO & if one lives far out of the metro area attending events, especially in the evenings or extreme weather is stressful for dogs & owners. Showing isn't always enjoyed by dogs or owners either so that leaves the ad part which is a good idea. Not sure if it will achieve much though apart from health record.
  19. How is putting him in a pen outside going to make any difference ? He can still poo in the pen & step in it. This a a toy breed & a baby & its almost winter. There is also the theft or something going wrong issue. I hope no one who has had any of my pups would do this. I would be so upset. A gentle shampoo when needed even if frequently short term isn't going to do him any harm. Its not like you are using bucketsful & leaving it sitting on his coat. Dilute half a teaspoon in a jug of warm water. That's plenty for a maltese puppy. You don't need it strong or frothy.
  20. Great save. Makes you wonder what's wrong with these bleeding idiots. Obviously the cat is an item of no value & gets no compassion You are an I wonder if the original breeder knows or cares ? Lovely photos.
  21. Yes to the first part but I would be an epic fail on the last bit  What does tough mean :) however pups soon settle in here without any aids & grow to be pleasant & obedient dogs for the most part. I do wish we could bottle Common Sense though.
  22. How alarming. Yes that was a seizure. I wonder if he had a chemical reaction to something in the park ? Unless he is not right & it happens again there is no point in going to the vet tomorrow. Tell them about it when you next take him re the other issues. A Chihuahua I had years ago had a brief fit at age 3 & I rushed to the vet. He didn't have another one for 2 years & after that about twice yearly, if that, so its not always serious or needs treatment. He died aged 16. A poodle I owned also had a brief seizure immediately after a red back spider bite.
  23. How sad you must be right now. As above when you are ready. The important thing is to train your child as well as your puppy & all will be well. Lots of babies & toddlers & dogs grow up together & the love & bond is beautiful as long as the parent can deal with them all sensibly.
  24. Not quite clear from your post Are you basing this on another breeder, who is not a friend of your puppies breeder & a rival quite openly, making a remark that your puppy has this problem ? If yes what is this based on ? Are you having problems with your puppy ? Was your puppy vet checked before it came to you ? Have you any reason at all to think your puppy has this problem ? I would not be booking an Xray & anaesthetic based on a random remark by someone who doesn't like the breeder. Why did this person say your puppy has this ? Why do you believe it ?
  25. Why are you sorry you posted it ? We few are all having a discussion on it & giving opinions which is what you asked for We can't give our experiences on it as its fairly new to us. I asked about the testing & numbers as well as giving an opinion based on the info posted. No need to be sorry it is interesting even if we would not use the product or agree with it When a subject is posted for discussion its hoped people can have a say without being offensive or personal. Sometimes this happens & sometimes it gets heated & somewhat insulting & personal but this hasn't. Its merely being discussed. Doesn't mean everyone has to agree.
