Do You Have An Entire Male Dog Inside?
Christina replied to Stitch's topic in General Dog Discussion
Depends on the male & how many other dogs you have plus desexed or not. Entire male with no entire females I have never had any issue with & had quite a few over a lifetime. Entire male + another & breeding females then yes I have a problem. Boy now 12 years old never marked territory until 2 years ago when I got another boy. Boy now 2 years old is awful since he got to maturity. Kept separate in the computer room he was peeing on my curtains at night until I crated him for bed. That seems to have stopped him. If I leave him another girl for company when I am out for long he sometimes pees on one of the dog beds If I put him in the lounge or rest of the house he will cock his leg somewhere. Having the computer room to himself without dog company he is usually clean however not keen on leaving him solo for long. Boy now 12 is with the girls in the lounge/rest of house & seldom marks territory anymore. Having a doggy door may help too but I don't as I don't want snakes or rodents entering the house. So obviously from others posts it can be very variable. -
I hope that is just desperation talking & its not a thought that should even be in your head. He is only a baby. What would you do with a human one because they wake up & cry in the night too ? Usually baby anything need comfort, warmth or food & its your job to figure out which. Maybe try changing feeding schedule so that he can sleep through. Maybe the dark scares him. Maybe he is cold when he comes back in. Maybe he needs an extra cuddle & soothing words before he goes back in the crate.

While I think that obviously we must have quarantine & we must pay for it to keep our country as trouble free & healthy as it is I think that the standard of accommodation & level of care for the cost is abysmal. There should be space, air con & heating for that cost & after the journey these animals have had they both need & deserve it.

Which Breeds Do You Wish Were In Australia?
Christina replied to Kavik's topic in General Dog Discussion
That face just looks fugly to me  I don't wish for any more breeds in Australia. I wish we could preserve & care for the ones we have got as many will be dying out. I doubt my grandchildren will see a pedigree poodle when they grow up. They will see oodle with lots of stupid tagged on the beginning. So many beautiful pure breed pedigree dogs getting messed about with so people can have more variety -
I would be taking her to another vets. You should know if she had an anaesthetic. They should have told you re aftercare ? If she was conscious having her nails cut like that would have been extremely painful She should have been put in a cage that she couldn't escape from. Can she undo latches or weren't they closed properly ? The whole experience would have been frightening for her. She may or may not need to have a soft muzzle at another vet but you won't know until you try. Buy a soft fabric one that fits. They are only a few dollars at the cheap variety stores & quite adequate for a small dog.

My Most Stupid Question Ever Posted
Christina replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
No peace going to the loo with dogs either unless you shut them in a room first. Sometimes I wonder do they think the toilet will swallow us up & make us disappear forever. -
Remedies - Have You Tried Any And Had Results?
Christina replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Found rescue remedy to be useless but have used Tranquil Paste which is for use on horses or dogs. Its mainly vitamins & when my boys got upset & were howling for the girls on heat & getting upset, scratching doors & generally absolutely frustrated I did find it helped settle them considerably although not entirely. Also slight improvement on a nervous dog but not as much effect as on the boys. -
Dental charges vary so much however at his age he will need pre blood tests & fluids so thats over $100 instantly. I think it is worth getting a 2nd quote. The actual cost for pulling a tooth out is not so much so 2 or 4 teeth won't be that much difference its all the other bits like the anaesthetic, cleaning, painkillers, antibiotic etc that bulk the bill up. I have had quotes that have varied $250 for the same work. Depends how comfortable you are with the vet doing the work too.

A shocking tragedy. I can't imagine how bad they all must feel. Have to say though that I never leave my small dogs outside when I am not home as other dogs gaining entry no matter how secure I think it is would always worry me so much.

So do dogs know when we start to play a computer game ? I can be sat here browsing & typing with them content around the room not bothering me & the minute I play this game & the music starts they come & pester, jump up at me, knock my arm causing me to make mistakes etc. Even tried it with the sound turned down but they must have been spying on me as they still came over to pester.

Your dog is very cute so now you need to find out all about any health checks, patellas & any other issues known to the breed. Make sure her back is nice & straight & her legs & feet don't turn in or out in any odd way. Check the standard & if you can't get anyone experienced to have a look at her for you make sure you understand it properly & ask questions if you don't. Everyone has to start somewhere. No one started off knowing it all so don't feel silly asking questions. Its better to ask about anything you are not sure about than to struggle along. As always opinions will vary on many aspects so use your common sense in considering all info. Best of luck :)

She may live to a ripe old age with a heart murmur. Our old Chihuahua had one, a slight one that didn't need any medication & he died at age 16. Its hard to check dogs teeth at the back when they are a small breed as you can't open their mouth wide enough without being scared of hurting them. Hopefully all will be ok now. Your vet sounds nice letting her friend stay with her too.

Worried About Golden Retriever Please Help
Christina replied to Parklife's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sometimes that is done. I had one done a few months ago by the dermatologist as blood tests didn't show anything at all & I was tearing myself to pieces & had a long standing rash that didn't respond to steroids or cortisone. The biopsy left a green scab for a month before it healed. Tests showed a slight allergy but were inconclusive. It cost $150 & I am still itching like crazy. Last resort I think. Best of luck :) -

Re the above parts of your post. Given the info I have no idea why you persisted in worming or using flea stuff on him. Obviously they are doing something to him & although your vets may not have seen such a thing before that doesn't mean that it cannot occur. My own experience of taking codeine once in my life resulted in a spinning world, my going stone deaf for 12 hours & having garbled speech. Not the usual reaction. Do not use any other products on him at all & seek the help of an allergy specialist is my advice. Allergy can cause all kinds of weird symptoms & reactions, even hallucinations. It may be that the effects may wear off in their own time as his immune system strengthens. Good luck & hopefully it won't turn out to be anything serious. However this is only a forum & most of us are not vets so you must consult a vet until you are happy with what they suggest & make your own decision as to their advice. -
As above however problem dogs can't usually be fixed quickly & some can't be fixed at all so the question is can you live with & manage a problem dog ? Some can, some can't. Any pound will only PTS. You may be lucky enough to find a person who will fall in love with her & manage her but I doubt it. However miracles can happen. Good luck.

Yes to 1 Yes to 2 preferably but realise this isn't always possible. For pet only I would want to meet the mother at least & would only buy in my own state. Breeding dog bought from interstate you have to trust the breeder. Yes to 3. if conditions are bad why give this person money to continue the cycle.

My Experience With Male Vs Female
Christina replied to Ivory & Beau's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't think gender is a factor in how a dog is overall. Whether the dog is a lone dog, one of a pack, entire or desexed & what they own is how people base their personal experiences. When having only one dog a very, very long time ago I didn't find much difference that was based on sex. Having a pack, some entire & some not, obviously they behave differently but apart from the boys vying in a pee fest when girls are in season generally in affection & liking to be near me, like glued to me, gender makes no difference. I note how boys seem to be favoured in responses here but when it comes to people wanting puppies for some odd reason girls are always in demand more. Weird when little boys are just as loving & obedient. -
The Most Important Thing I Know About Dog Training Is....
Christina replied to hankdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Along similar lines. The dog has to understand what I want it to do. Otherwise how can it do it ? -
Re above parts. Its not unusual to be refused a visit. Some do allow & some don't. Phone the kennel club in their state & ask are they currently registered. Easy. Pick up the phone & call them. Not much communication but only they know why. 3 litters is not a huge amount. They may not have any more for a year or many more. Certificates & papers should have been discussed before you handed money over but you need to ask about this asap. People may not show for a variety of reasons it does not mean their dogs are not up to standard or that they are ignorant of the standard. Dog not enjoying it, person not enjoying it, age, distance, health, shyness or even not coping with the people & politics involved can be some reasons. Dogs may be really good. It was silly to part with money so eagerly however its done now & may all work out fine. Good luck. Hope to see photos of a wonderful puppy here soon.
-
Bad teeth or something stuck in her teeth however could be other things too so take her to the vet asap. As she is not a drooly breed obviously something is amiss. Its not something that will just go away & sounds like she is uncomfortable with whatever is the cause. Hopefully its something easily fixed.

Normal for a pup to hate being alone & its only been a few days so you either need to have patience & wait for her to adjust or go back & get her a friend if they still have any of her litter mates. Some dogs are more sensitive than others.
-
If your puppy is eating & seems active he is not sick but probably sad. He has been taken away from his mum & litter mates ( too young but that's done now )& taken to a strange place with a person he doesn't know & is alone now. Its a shock. Pups need love, warmth & lots of cuddles & play. Try an igloo type bed for him. They have them in Kmart for $8 or Cheap As Chips for about $17. Much snugglier on cold nights sleeping alone & he will feel safe with the hood part. Don't get too caught up on harsh training & there are so many ways on the internet that they can't all be the one right way. Dogs were trained by various methods before we had all this expert advice at the press of a key. Your pup needs human contact now & to bond with you. Use common sense & don't ignore all whining. Like human babies sometimes they just need a cuddle. So more cuddles & contact is what I think & then maybe he will feel happier & settle more.

What Do You Say When You See A Dog Being Mistreated?
Christina replied to BarbedWire's topic in General Dog Discussion
1st time was in a park. The man was really laying into his German Shepherd. I ran up behind him & kicked him up the butt & he fell over. I was yelling something or other at him & then I ran away fast. I was 12. Grown up since then & got more careful. Not seen much abuse apart from a few incidents in dog grooming to be honest. Even allowing for differences of opinion on what is ok & not I have seen lots of neglect though. Its sometimes a fine line between neglect & abuse. Sometimes its done through sheer laziness or stupidity & sometimes by total lack of insight or learned ways from parents & environment. If someone was hitting their dog hard or lost their temper & belting it I would say something because I would get very angry & not care about repercussions, can't help it. For things like weight, on chains, isolation etc even when you know the person you are treading a fine line & upsetting as is it sometimes there is little you can do if a polite voice remarking on your concerns is ignored. Re biting a dog back because it bit you even if done with intense aggression is totally wrong IMO. The dog is behaving like a dog. People don't need to stoop to that level. A biting dog needs control & firm but kind discipline not physical abuse. -
I wouldn't even be anything other than impatient until day 65. There is nothing wrong & nothing to be done from the sound of things. Stressy owner makes stressy dog. May be worth reminding them. Rushing her to vets, strange places at this stage to be messed about with won't do the dog any good. It needs to be at home with access to the birthing box, in peace.
