Exploratory Surgery Price Opinions Please!
Christina replied to miss2's topic in General Dog Discussion
Emergency vets often charge higher rates due to needing more staffing levels among other things. Prices for the same thing can vary enormously so I would be phoning your own vet, or another one, & explaining the situation & ask what they will charge for this, without mentioning the other price. it needs seeing to but I doubt another day will make much differenc3e if she is not in pain. -
Can Anyone Explain 'itchyosis Carrier' ?
Christina replied to Seren's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Get some Coopex ( residual insecticide ) & go over your grounds if possible. Sold in fodder stores. Fleas may be in your grass & soil. -

Only the dog knows why he is doing this. Vet check for sure. It may be his eyesight is going & he is licking her for reassurance & orientation but that's just a stab in the dark. May be senility but 11 is not old for a poodle & dementia is a vague answer for I have no idea. My 12 year old had a funny little episode last year, lost a few minutes lost in space & I thought spider bite or small stroke however vet said dementia. He is sharp as a tack & has not had anything like that again. Sight & hearing good & acting normal as ever As long as vet can't find anything definite the reason may never be found & he may just stop doing it. I would let them go if the girl puts him in his place & they don't fight.

Not sure on toys for big dogs having a toy breed but regarding the off lead if you are out alone with a dog, a toddler & a puppy how on earth are you going to manage if something goes amiss ? A 12 week old puppy has the attention span of a gnat & a toddler not much more so if the unexpected happens like roaming uncontrolled dog or pup going towards road or even troublesome yobbos coming onto the oval for example you may find yourself in a mess. I would try & take puppy out alone when recall is better. Can you get your partner or friend to mind your child for short times while you do this.

Probably because it can sting like hell. I think it has alcohol/spirit in which can really sting sensitive skin.
-
Baby wipes & commercial ear cleaners can be a bit irritating for sensitive dogs. A mix of half white vinegar & half warm water does the job nicely & works as well as anything else, is cheap & you never run out of it either. For serious waxy or smelly stuff you must see the vet.

I wouldn't be overly worried about 2 small bald spots like that as long as no more appear. Could have caught herself on something & licked paw too much & head spot may be unrelated. If its ringworm you will soon see more & will get it yourself No use guessing so vet consult needed to check for ringworm & diagnose but doubt its serious if it stays as is. Grass allergy gets worse at this time of year & may contribute to more paw chewing. A thing to consider as she is immune compromised is whether it is wise to use a chemical on her monthly as a routine matter ? Unless you are in an environment where fleas & heart worm are a high risk it may be better to use a monthly heart worm & only treat for fleas if needed. Its quick & easy to flea check your dog after a walk or mixing with other dogs.

Is Neutering At 8 Value For Money
Christina replied to LeoBullTerrier's topic in General Dog Discussion
He sounds gorgeous & not a problem dog at all however I would never allow children in my yard with my dogs unsupervised when I am not at home. Although you know them & the dog does too what if they bought a friend in or did something stupid & your dog reacted ? Your dog would get blamed no matter what the circumstances so for the dogs sake I would stop this. Parents hardly ever take responsibility & you may never know the truth if anything happened it is always the dogs fault. Sad but that's how it is now. -
I wonder does the fine go to the victim ? It says fine not compensation. It is good that the owner suffered consequences for their neglect & stupidity however I don't agree with jail time if this is a first occurrence. The owner is not a danger to society as I presume they don't own these dogs any more & jail is clogged up enough. They may not have known the dogs would do this & the reporting of looking for an artery is sensationalist. They can't read dogs minds. They also need to be free to earn the money to pay the fine. $13000 sends out a good message to control & contain your dogs. The victim must have been terrified.

I don't think your vet is being a money grabber by making this suggestion. The vet may sincerely believe this will work but it may not be based on personal experience. Many vets only own one dog or may not even own a dog so they take their opinion from the textbook on this. It may quieten a dog down, especially a young dog, but it doesn't always especially an old dog. Your dog your decision. If his exuberance doesn't bother you & you are not getting complaints from others why worry. The only guaranteed thing it will definitely stop is testicular cancer & ability to sire a litter. -
Oh no not more mice. After last years plague & my car being invaded by them I am getting horrors just reading this. Last year I did bait with Ratsack out the front but not back of my half acre. 2 cats in the outside runs caught heaps & I was so worried but they seem ok. Its a bad problem. Lots of people around here were using big buckets of water with ramps to drown them but I couldn't do that. I think keeping birds always brings mice. Its like running a restaurant for them

No, not now. Sometimes it is just in the nature of the particular dog to be this way & they are often lovable & fun but a bit of a pain. No use knocking the spirit out of him by harsh training but you could maybe try a few things like making him sit when over excited & having him on a lead when greeting. One of my poodles is like this. She runs laps & bounds up on furniture with visitors most people thing its hilarious seeing her crazy with excitement but I do hold her or put her out sometimes depending on the level of activety. Had her desexed at age 8 & she is exactly the same as always almost a year later. -
Good news About time they did this. Should be done in all hospitals, aged care places etc too. It can help recovery & lift spirits more than anything for pet owners.

Dogs Pooing On Furniture
Christina replied to keetamouse's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Its a dominance/pack order thing. When my youngest boy became mature he did this in all the other dogs beds & on the lounge too. As I have an old male & both are not desexed I knew this was how he was trying to establish dominance. You have to isolate the culprits ( be sure you have the right ones ) & move anything they can do this on. Then teach them a toilet word. Mine is piddles for anything. Tell them to go when they are out & praise & in time allow them individually into other places but watch them all the time. I tell my boy no piddles before he comes in the lounge on the odd occasion & watch him but he can do a sneaky one usually on the floor on corner of something. I doubt he will ever stop, maybe when the old boy is gone. They may or may not become reliable in time. Depends on the dogs temperament & if they can establish themselves comfortably in the pack order. Some need to be only dogs. -
My thoughts too however although I would think this all a little odd if I wanted the puppy I would agree to it. The breeder may have had bad experiences in the past & may want this for reassurance. Sometimes people do lie a lot. On the few occasions I have re homed a young adult I have done a home visit beforehand.

Cranberry juice may help a little but it won't fix it. It won't do any harm I have used on a cat in the past & its quite harmless. As it comes in a litre size you won't use it all up fast enough so its very nice mixed in with some vodka for yourself :)

It must be so hard seeing them this way.

I have no idea but I think the best thing to do is to ask them what qualifications they have. Its ok & makes sense to ask that question. Whether having done courses & having certificates makes them any good is another matter altogether. I would think that you could get 3 people who have all done the same course & apply it & teach/train in different ways. Word of mouth & personal recommendations are a good start but the bottom line is it is your dog & if you are uncomfortable with any suggestions or not happy with the way the dog is handled, treated or reacting it is up to you to stop the lesson.

I did hesitate but the breeder said it was fine from 12 weeks and a lot of advice in other posts said to "start as you mean to continue" ie if the dog is intended to sleep outside then start them off our there or yo set yourself up for future problems. Argggh - so much conflicting advice! Thanks for your input - it's given me something to think about. This is only a baby that has only been away from its mother & litter mates for a few weeks. To put it outside is quite unkind & scary for it. Its also snake season. They are coming out & about, breeding & nasty. Its also going to get very hot soon here in SA. The pup needs to be cool & safe inside like you are. Cats like enclosed spaces, dogs often don't like being caged, crated or confined in small spaces. Dogs are intelligent & some rules can be changed without too much hassle. You can start to teach your dog the quiet command by getting his attention first & then making him understand what you want him to do. This is easier said than done & takes time but for now he will be barking & whining at night from fear & loneliness. The problem could be solved instantly by letting pup take turns to sleep on your childrens beds at night or on the floor in their rooms. Pup & children will be quiet, happy & sleep well & dog will learn to guard & keep them safe. When we were children & told to go to bed the dog always came with us.

Classic 'dogs Locked In Cars' Comment Today
Christina replied to pepe001's topic in General Dog Discussion
Obviously the message isn't getting into some thick heads but I am glad that so many people realise the dangers & do speak up & take action to do something about it more now. Public awareness is increasing but as posted you can't fix stupid. I do think that in these cases the car owner should legally be made to spend a 15 minute or so period sitting in the car to experience the discomfort. Its the only thing that makes some people understand when fines & warnings won't work. -
Guess its time to find a new place to go to. They all sound like crazies at that one Some people are so weird.

You need a full week off work. Its wiser next time not to let the bitch be mated over 7 days. If the timing is right matings over 48 hours generally do the job. I have not progesterone tested my girls but this always works unless your dog has complicated seasons.
