  1. Just wondering what wormers everyone uses for their dogs? I have two dogs, both under 10kgs and I'm just looking to find a cheaper, effective way to keep their worming up to date. Have previously been using Drontal all wormer, but just wondering if there is something better to use? I don't need one with heartworm prevention. I'm in Canberra, not that I think it makes much difference to the type of worming they require.
  2. I can't believe it sat there for a month before they managed to get it??? It must have stunk
  3. I dropped off, discussed with her when I could pick up. I had a committment between particular hours so told her I could pick up before that time or after that time. She preferred after that time.
  4. I don't imagine they would cause a problem other than itchiness. They are made of little pieces of fibreglass which can stick in your skin, but otherwise, not a problem.
  5. Are the ears likely to be fly bites? One of my dogs used to get ears like that during summer when the flies were really bad
  6. I don't know whether she is a trainer or not. I just rang her out of the yellow pages . In my district and not too far from work for drop off and pick up.
  7. They have been clipped off short all over which is what I asked for. Ears are clean, nails are clipped, length of coat is even. No complaints with the way they look. Was just surprised that it wasn't until I phoned that I knew they had been running about with other dogs. My other dog (not the one who has had surgery) is a "bit funny" with other dogs sometimes. Nothing bad, can just be a little quick to get defensive if someone is in his face. I didn't even think to mention that to her as I wasn't thinking it would be an issue. Guess I will have a longer list of questions to ask when I'm looking to use a groomer again. I normally clip them off myself but thought I would start summer with a proper job so it is easier to follow. Might just have to go back to dodgy back yard hair cuts from me.
  8. For those of you who have a home based grooming business Do you ask clients about the vaccination status of their animals before accepting them as clients? Or how they behave with other dogs? Do you let dogs play together after they have been groomed? Dogs that have never met before? The other day, I went to a groomer I have never used before. I wasn't asked about their vaccinations (they are current). I told her that one of my dogs has recently had surgery for cruciate ligament and luxating patella (so she was aware he may be a bit tender around that area when clipping him) I found out later that my dogs had been let out to play with other dogs in the back yard after they had been groomed, and that the back yard has several levels "but most dogs work out to use the steps" It wasn't even something I thought to ask about as I was of the opinion that they would be in a crate/cage after being groomed and not being put with other dogs. They weren't being supervised while they were in the backyard, so when I asked if anything had happened to him she wasn't able to say so, just that she hadn't heard him yelp and she would expect to if he had been injured (I phoned her to ask if anything had happened as he is now holding his leg up again and had previously been doing pretty well on it, only occasionally holding it up while he went down our stairs)
  9. This sounds very like symptons my dog Occy was displaying earlier this year. (see this thread http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...75&hl=occy) Turns out he had an old ruptured disc in his neck and had done something to aggravate it. Confinement and steriods were the treatment he received. Unfortunately, shortly after that he did a cruciate ligament in his back leg and had surgery on that and a luxating patella at the same time (see here http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...=occy&st=0)
  10. Glad to see that he is still smiling. Hopefully his recovery goes to plan and he is back at it soon Good luck to you both
  11. Until you can get to the vet, wash regularly with warm salty water and pour betadine into the wound. Don't let it close back over. I wouldn't put powder in, stick to betadine.
  12. My brother lives at Ashgrove. He only has cats, but I could ask which vet he uses if you like
  13. One of my dogs has just started on it and I have noticed a few very dark softer than usual stools in the back yard. Not sure who is doing them, but I suspect it is ithe joint guard that is responsible. He is about to go down to the maintenance dose so it may settle down
  14. Thanks for that link, though they are cheaper on the VetStop shop link ($36.50 for 200gms) I didn't do the comparison for the powder Oops. Just went and looked again. I was looking at the 200gm powder on the greyhound site, not the treats. The treats are cheaper on there
  15. http://www.vetstop.com.au/shop/shopdisplay....asp?Search=Yes I paid over $50 at my vet for the same packet Typical I have bought things through the above site before and had no problems with them
  16. Had Occy back to the vet last night for a check up following his Cruciate Ligament and luxating patella surgery a few months back. He is having 6 weekly injections but she also recommended the Joint guard, which they have as the liver treats. I bought a bag of 120 which will last quite a while (he is currently 5.5kilos, though hopefully is still losing weight after packing on 600gms following his surgery and confinement). Prior to his surgery he was just under 5kilos. Of course I found them on line tonight for much less than I paid at my vets, so if I continue to use them I will certainly be buying them online. He does have a bit of arthritis already, so hopefully it will relieve that and prevent any further problems developing. I don't know how old he is. He was an adult dog when I got him from the RSPCA 6 years ago. At the time his age was put at 3-4 years, but a vet who recently examined him said that if he didn't know better he still only put him around the 4-5 year mark (obviously holds his age well ) I guess I'm just wondering how I'll know if any improvement I see is due to continued healing of his surgery, the injections or the joint guard? Does anyone use this? How good is it?
  17. I had to sign a consent form (at two different surgeries that I have used over the years) for the tattoo to be done. It wasn't an automatic thing. The only female I have is a completely black longhaired cat and you can't see the tattoo anyway She has the long feathers coming from her ears. The tattoos on my boys are very noticeable, but then so is the lack of testes
  18. Ummm, I didn't know there were different types. The way I understand what was explained to me, the groove under the knee cap was made deeper, so that the knee cap sits in it a bit tighter without slipping out, and the ligaments were "tacked/stitched" down? I think she said that a piece of the ligament is cut, and used for something else, but I must admit that it was all getting a bit technical, and I zoned out a bit. Bad mother I know, but the thing I wanted to hear "yes, it has a good success rate" distracted me.
  19. One week on. He went back to the vet today. They took all his bandaging off, as he started chewing at his stitches today. He got a bit stroppy when they pulled the strapping off though, as a bit of it missed the cotton underneath, and the adhesive was straight onto his fur. Think pulling bandaid off a hairy spot, and that's how he was. He immediately started chewing and licking at his leg, so he has an E collar on to stop him from doing that. He had his first cartrophen injection today. Back again in a week for another check up and cartrophen injection. Vet is very happy with his progress so far ;)
  20. Occy has had his surgery. The vet was very pleased with the way it went and thinks that he should have quite a good result. He has been fantastic so far, no whinging or chewing. It is going to be a real hassle to not let him move around on it too much though. They say to take him out for toileting on a lead, but if he even saw his lead he would go nutso. He loves his lead, and jumps around like a mad thing, so I have just been carrying him out and putting him down. I have to put Max inside, then take Occy outside, and try to stop him from doing a pee lap at a million miles an hour. Fingers crossed that this will be successful for him. He's such a little trooper. He had put on 1/2 kilo at Mums , but under very strict orders from me, she has reluctantly stopped giving him all the little tidbits, and he has almost lost it all again. He was a real little butter ball. When you only just weigh 5 kilos to start with, 1/2 kilo makes a big difference.
  21. Will be very interested to know how he comes through after his operation. My 12 mth old Toy poodle had the same operation several months ago but poor boy is very ,very, lame on that leg now.He is his own worse enemy though. as he loves to run Has been on Glucosomine and weekly cartrogen injections, don't quite know where to go next. He also has a luxating patella on his other knee,so far it's not worrying him. I'll let you know how he is managing. He will be staying at my folks for a while after the op, so that he can't get up to any mischief with our other dog Max. Hopefully it will be a success. He still tries to beg whenever we go to visit him, and stand on his back legs and dance, even though he can't put one leg on the ground He will be having weekly injections for a month or so after the op as well.
  22. Great news. Amazing what a bit of confinement can do
  23. Well, we went back to the vet last night. His leg hasn't improved, so he is booked in to have the cruciate ligament and the patella done next thursday (22nd May) Mum and Dad are going to continue looking after him during his convalesence period. Dad is very chuffed having him there, and tells me in great detail how when he takes him out early in the morning he only goes to one bush, pees for ages with a contented look on his face, then goes and sits in front of the door because it is too cold to be out yet. Then, when he takes him out last thing at night, he has a circuit of bushes he goes and pees on. When he has finished, he comes and sits at Dads feet, waiting to be picked up and carried inside. Dad's very intrigued that he hasn't varied the routine once since he got there. In the morning, he goes to the door. At night he goes back to Dad. Fingers crossed for my boy. He's been a real trooper, and hasn't complained at all about anything that has been done so far.
  24. Good luck with it. Hopefully it is easily fixed and not to painful for your boy
