    Not Dogs

RSPCA wildlife are the ONLY licenced carers in the ACT and they do a great job. Anyone who says otherwise has been listening to the wrong (very vocal) person. I noticed one caught on a powerline just near my work the other day. Already deceased unfortunately.
  2. http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/abby-...0-1225890085031 A US court has sentenced a Colorado woman convicted of taping her boyfriend's dog to a refrigerator in a jealous fit to 30 days in jail and three years' probation. Abby Toll, 21, was sentenced yesterday after she was convicted of felony animal cruelty in April. She could have faced up to 18 months in prison. Prosecutors say Toll used hair ties and packing tape to bind the snout and legs of her boyfriend's two-year-old shiba inu named Rex, then taped the dog upside-down to the refrigerator. Police say Toll told them she was getting back at her boyfriend, Brian Beck, for paying more attention to the dog than to her. Beck pleaded guilty to misdemeanor attempted animal cruelty and was given a one-year deferred sentence. Another family has adopted the dog. Not Dogs

http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2010/07/09/2949917.htm Video link to a stateline story about the Flying foxes which are in Canberra. We rarely have them in Canberra and they are usually well and truly gone by winter, but there is still a decent population of them hanging about. Chris Tidemann is an interesting man and runs the local Mynah trapping program It is quite successful, but there are plenty more to go.
  4. +1 +2 Another Uncle Albers and Great Barko fan here. My staffords' coats have never looked better since starting on this kibble. Where abouts in Canberra do you get it? I've never seen it anywhere?

    Cat Cruelty

The kindest thing for that cat would be PTS, particularly if he is burnt over his entire body. They will be able to provide the evidence they need if they do locate those responsible from the photos and vet reports they already have. No need to make the poor thing suffer so they can parade him in front of a court and tell them how much it cost to nurse him back to health.
  6. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local...le/1874646.aspx Snuffles snaffles $1000 truffle BY KAREN HARDY 02 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM A little dog called Snuffles has got the 2010 truffle season off to the best possible start, unearthing one of the biggest truffles the district has produced. Weighing in at 400g, the truffle was found on the farm of Sherry McArdle-English, out on Majura Road. ''We've been hunting every second day since the season began a week or so ago,'' Ms McArdle-English said. ''We've found quite a few, including three more than 200g, but this one is just beautiful. ''The very cold weather over the past week has helped to mature them really quickly and that helps bring them up to an A-grade standard.'' Truffles are judged and ultimately graded like wine, Ms McArdle-English said. ''We go through a very similar process when we're judging the truffles,'' she says. ''You look at the colour, the density, the aroma and ultimately the taste. All those things culminate to give you the grading.'' Ms McArdle-English estimates the truffle is worth close to $1000 and she has already promised it to Janet Jeffs, executive chef at Ginger Catering. ''I've already been on the phone to Janet,'' McArdle-English says, ''and she's beside herself with excitement''. No doubt Ms Jeffs will use the truffle in her menu for the Australian Truffle Festival which runs all month, with a varied program from dinners to truffle hunts. A grand truffle dinner was held at the Hyatt Hotel in Canberra last night. Ainslie's Pulp Kitchen has a truffle tasting menu each Monday. At Flint, in Acton, Wednesday night is truffle night. And Lerida Estate winery will feature truffle dishes on its Cafe Lerida menu during the season. For those who want to do more than dine, there are truffle workshops, cooking classes and truffle hunts to join. For more details, visit the Australian Truffle Festival website. For more on this story including details of Snuffles' truffle-sniffing career and heritage, see the print edition of today's Canberra Times. Cute photo online and in the print edition
  7. I've saved the document as a PDF, but I don't know how to reduce it and it's too large a file to upload. Does anyone know how to reduce a PDF file? I can email it to you
  8. What ad are you talking about? These figures are released every year in the annual report. I have never seen an ad for DAS? Articles, quite often. One recently about the wonderful volunteers at DAS, but never an ad.
  9. And plenty of NSW people do advertise in the ACT. We can't legislate the rest of the country. We can only legislate for the ACT. At least somebody is doing something. If all the other states and territories follow suit, perhaps it will be effective. "The journey of a thousand miles, starts with a single step." Someone, somewhere, has to take that first step. A mandatory code of practice has offences built into it. There are sections that are "codes of practice" therefore you choose whether or not you comply with them, but the "Mandatory" things are legislated and you will receive a fine for failing to comply with them.
  10. Sorry, but the article isn't on the Canberra Times website, but on Page 3, 26 June 2010, there is an article titled "Bid to clamp down on ACT Puppy farms" The article goes on to detail what puppy farms are, the type of problems they create, the increased number of dogs which are dumped, the impact the surrounding regions have on the ACT pound and RSPCA and also includes a few comments from a local dalmatian breeder, Rebecca Woiwade and the testing she undertakes within her breed. "Ginninderra MLA, Mary Porter, outlined possible changes to laws this week to regulate the companion animal industry. ... She will issue a discussion paper by August and plans to push through the first mandatory code for animal owners in Australia. ... I anticipate a mandatory code would ultimately apply to all sellers of companion animals and will seek to apply practical measures that cover sales advertised on the internet or in the printed media, as well as in pet stores" I will take the article to work on Monday to scan it in for you. Sorry the Canberra times is such a pathetic website
  11. There is an "in brief" update to this matter in the Canberra Times today (though not available on the website) "Cruelty Charges A Nicholls man accused of killing a Rottweiler and abusing other family pets has pleaded not guilty to animal cruelty charges. Dusko Culibrk, 25, appeared the ACT Magistrates court yesterday on two counts of cruelty to animals and one of aggravated cruelty. He has been in custody since his arrest on May 11 and his case is due to be heard in August" Canberra Times, 24Jun10, pg 7
  12. They mention Red Hill and Telopea Park? Only thing that looks remotely like it fits that description is Flinders park, Captain Cook Park, Manuka Oval to Telopea Park. I don't think Flinders Park is even in Red Hill? Pretty sure that is in Griffith
  13. http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2010/06/18/2931314.htm It's a link to a video about an off leash area in Canberra Nice bunch of dogs running about and all getting along
  14. Border collie? Right markings, they often have blue eyes and the colour is right.
  15. My maltese x howls at sirens and Mr Whippy. He very rarely barks and when he does it is a wuff wuff then stops. He has a proper big dog howl. The first few times I heard it, I just presumed it was a dog at a neighbouring house, because it sounded too big to be him, then I saw him do it and nearly fell over.
  16. I don't know that I can explain it other than the Magistrates are gutless. ACT has only just opened its first gaol and previously, those who did actually receive sentences were transferred to (mostly) Goulburn prison, with an additional cost to the ACT for housing them. Whether this had any effect on sentencing previously is pure speculation on my part. Now that we have our own prison, it doesn't seem that people are getting sentences relevant to their crimes. The prison has just been filled up with those who have been transferred back from NSW and Victoria There hasn't been a successful murder prosecution for 12 years in the ACT. Prime example, Glenn Porrit, stabbed his mother 57 times, yet Chief Justice Higgins agreed that he didn't actually mean to kill her, so he was released with no further time to serve, other than the time he served while on remand. This web link http://the-riotact.com/?s=Glen+Porritt takes you to many pathetic sentencing results in the ACT for serious crimes. One name crops up again and again.
  17. This will be an interesting one to watch through the courts. The ACT courts have the unenviable status of being one of the most lenient in the country. I'm astounded that he was even remanded in custody.
  18. Glad they got her out unharmed http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local...dy/1813361.aspx Stowaway kitten taken into custody BY LISA MARTIN 27 Apr, 2010 08:37 AM Cartwright the runaway kitten is back in police custody after surviving two hours trapped in the engine of a Sydney highway patrol car. Senior-Constable Tex Tannous was reunited with the tiny black ball of fluff at a western Sydney vet clinic yesterday, three days after rescuing her. Police nicknamed the four-week-old kitten Cartwright after the avenue and suburb where her ordeal began on Friday. Now they are appealing for her owners to come forward, but haven't ruled out the possibility that Cartwright was a stray on the run when she hitched a ride with the cops. For Senior-Constable Tannous, it turned into a real puss in bonnet saga. He said he was ridiculed by colleagues when he first told them a kitten was trapped in his car. He'd been driving along Cartwright Avenue, at Cartwright, when the kitten dashed in front of the vehicle, forcing him to brake hard. ''I pulled over ... I couldn't locate it. I was walking around, I could hear it, but I couldn't find the little sucker,'' he said as he cradled Cartwright in his arms yesterday. Senior-Constable Tannous said that at first he thought the cat had dashed to safety, but heard meowing about two hours later while setting up a random breath test site. He said he immediately made sure the engine was turned off. ''The car was getting hot sitting there ... we didn't want fried cat in the engine,'' he said, grimacing as Cartwright dug her claws into his shirt. Colleagues initially thought he was playing a practical joke. ''I said 'I've got a bit of a problem, there's a cat in my engine'. They looked at me funny. I don't think they believed me,'' he said. After a good laugh, supervisor Sergeant Adrian Grech took a second look under the vehicle. ''We saw the fur poking out of a little drain hole,'' Sergeant Grech said. ''We poked it and it meowed. ''She was in there for a good two hours.'' The vehicle was put on a platform at a nearby mechanics shop, and the front bumper was removed to reveal the terrified, but uninjured, kitten. Senior-Constable Tannous laughed off a suggestion he'd said, ''Police, come out with your paws up!'' ''She was really frightened and didn't want to come out,'' he said. AAP
  19. More, from the local paper http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/local...dy/1809947.aspx Charges help family cope with tragedy BY DAVID STOCKMAN, POLICE REPORTER 22 Apr, 2010 09:01 AM Bob Knight's family is finding peace for the first time in almost a year. Widow Jeanette Knight and her children continue to mourn the loss of the popular Canberra truck driver but news yesterday that NSW police had charged seven people over the 66-year-old's alleged murder is easing their pain. Police will allege a dispute between two families on June 25 last year escalated into a shoot-out outside a western Sydney KFC outlet that led to a stray bullet killing the passing Macgregor truckie. Police allege the bullet hit Mr Knight some 200m away, killing him almost immediately. Four men and three teenagers have been charged with murder and affray after a series of arrests on Tuesday night and yesterday morning in Sydney's south-west. Two men were arrested in Greenacre on Tuesday night, with two men aged 20 and 18, and 16 and 17-year-old youths arrested during simultaneous swoops yesterday morning. A 17-year-old youth turned himself in at Campsie police station about midday yesterday and was charged. Detective Inspector Pamela Young said the investigation pointed to a confrontation between two feuding family groups and some of their friends. ''The allegation is that they met at the KFC car park to fight each other, we allege to fire shots at each other, [and] a stray bullet has left the KFC car park and travelled so far that it did hit Bob Knight as he was driving his truck,'' Inspector Young said. A truck driver for 30 years, Mr Knight was was known as an excellent operator who fastidiously maintained his trucks. He was married to Jeanette for almost 46 years. His family welcomed the charges and praised the police for their diligence. For more on this story, see the print edition of today's Canberra Times.
  20. http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/siv-...9-1225856210340 POLICE investigating the death of Canberra truck driver Bob Knight have arrested six men in a series of raids overnight. The men, aged 17 to 32 years, are assisting detectives with inquiries at Campsie and Bankstown police stations. The raids occurred about 9.30pm last night at Greenacre. Mr Knight, 66, died when he was shot in his truck at Milperra in June last year. Homicide squad detectives were assisted by PolAir and the Public Order and Riot Squad.
  21. Because other breeds including GSD's are being targeted, thanks to the R$PCA. Sorry Tarope, but your arguement is as sensible as me saying that all owners of GSDs, Rottis, Staffies, Pits etc etc are Bogan idiots who only have this type of dog because it looks tough or they are vicious. The RSPCA are not the only people pushing BSL, and they certainly aren't responsible for getting Legislation through. Target the politicians who are Legislating. Unfortunately, the media will always report on a sensational attack and whip the public into a frenzy. Surely you should be targeting the media because they are highlighting the attacks? Or what about the hospitals which record the statistics on dog attacks and then release that information? Why aren't they at fault that these breeds are being targeted? And potentially putting other breeds on the lists, because the statistics will eventually show that the JRT or Golden Retriever are also responsible for attacking people? Or are the RSPCA the only bandwagon you have to push? And you can't see how one eyed you are and are determined to keep bad mouthing them? For the record - I don't have an opinion about the type of people who own these breeds of dogs - I was merely demonstrating how stupid some statements can be. The R$PCA is responsible for BSL it's that simple. Do you work for the R$PCA ? Every day more and more people are coming to realize what the R$PCA is really like and not liking what they see. No Tarope, if you bothered to actually read what is written, you would see way back that I wrote I have no personal affiliation with the RSPCA at all. I think there is only one thing here that is simple and I'm sure most people can work out what I'm referring to (except those that are simple of course) My experience with the RSPCA has merely been to adopt animals from them at times when I was in a position to take on a new one. Your one eyed rant isn't going to change my opinion of the experiences I have had with them.
  22. I would include such things as obedience training, vaccinations and health checks, house trained, non destructive, regularly exercised etc, so that they can see that you are a responsible pet owner. The main concern about renting a house to someone with pets is damage to the property, potential introduction of pests (fleas) and impact on neighbours (barking complaints, fence jumping etc). If you can mitigate those before they become an issue, you are halfway there.
