Hi Tumbleweed Have you considered that anything may have changed or is different when a run off occurs. Anything at all it could be tone of voice it could be a distraction you don't notice it could be a ground surface or it could be a combination. So that on their own it is fine but combined you have an issue. (hope that makes sence) I think that you have the right idea to super reward correct behaviour. It depends on your dog if sin bin would work. For my BC we were trying to re-train some flyball and part of it was she HAD to tug at the end of her run (there was a reason but I won't get into it here) anyway if she did it she got another run then if she got that right we played and praised all the way back to the tralier to end the session. IF she got it wrong she was ignored and quietly put away for 10 min or so and then we tried again. She wasn't punished for getting it wrong just ignored and didn't get to play anymore where as when she did get it right we made sure that she knew it. She understood but not all dogs do so be carful not to confuse your dog or cause her to shutdown her learning.

It would be noce if we could stop people from talking to our overly friendly dogs but it can be hard for some people to do that. I'm a bitch so it is no problem for me to tell someone to leave my dam dog alone but not everyone is like that. To the OP I'd love to here what your trainer says about the issue. After all they are the ones that knows you and your dog.

I'll clarify my suggestion as I didn't mean it in the way that it the way it has ben interprited. A dobe pup in a sit would have it's head not far below hand hieght. While the dog is learning the correct way to greet someone it might (might depending on the dog and the handlers abilitys and strength) HELP the handler to keep control of the situation. If the dog has jumped and hit the end of the leash then it is to late, the idea of the headcollar is to prevent the jump in the firstplace. A head collar of any type is no more a gadget than any other type of training aid if used correctly.

Somewhere in the last page I lost what I was going to add to the OP. Might be nice to keep the personal attacks away and have a healthy conversation about different techniques. EVERY dog is different and EVERY dog reacts differently to corrections and reward. IMO this pup is just being an excited pup. I will add that maybe back off a little on the distration and work up to it if you really want to succed in breakiong this behavour b/c really name any pup that doesn't get excited by the prospect of playing with someone new. I second the books "Conrol Unleashed" and "Click to Calm" reading both at the momment and I have so many sticky notes poking out it looks like a school book. The idea of the "look at that" game is to get the dog to look at something and then look at you for reward. Then the dog has an automatic look at you when he see's something. One last suggestion that I havn't seen but may have missed. What about a head collar? Even just as a back up to the normal collar while in training, A dog cant jump if he can't lift his head.

Agility Training Talk Thread

Hope you enjoy it. Soft pallitble food such as hotdog, cheese, or that ham and chicken loaf from the cold section of the supermarket. Cut it up small and make sure that she swallows it before running more and she should be fine. If you wanted to get her playing more you could try a food tug at home and work on play as a reward. IMO both play and food is good as you can use different rewards for different situations. Have fun! -

Yeah KP thats me your thinking of. My friends were admiring your baby At home she can move out but then I only have a few jumps. I have started to only reward away from me for a while to see if that helps. I looked up Agility right from the start and it looks great. Will help with my new boy too. Getting to training again would help as well as it has been 13 months since I have made it to a class. (week before bubs was born lol) Thinking of checking out Bacchus Marsh as they have night classes -
I also have "control unleashed" and find some of the exercises a little difficult master such as the blinking and breathing ones. I am reading this thread with interest as I have simmilar issues with Flea. She really stuggles to control herself around other dogs that are having fun such as Flyball or Agility. It was noted on the weekend though that it is only with me. I had her on leash (Hubby pinched car to take bubs for a drive) she was all jittery and wingey. When I left to go walk the course I left her with a friend and she laid down peacfully. Not sure what that is about.

Hi All Came in to the training forum to ask a question about opions on a book and have spent for ever looking over this thread. I may have missed what I'm goning to ask so forgive me if I do. I'm looking at training books atm and my main focus is on working away from me. Not stand in the middle, dog run the course but just moving ahead of me rather than looking back or the time. Clean Run's Go the distance looks good but I'm not sure. When I handle a course I try to use Greg Derrets system but I don't do it as well as some of the people I have seen it's just that his system makes sence to me. Please Help -
Hi All We are building a house and so need design a back yard. Figured I would ask on here coz you guys love to think to stuff (not that this is as cool as puppy names) The block isn't big but not to small either. We have 4 dogs a BC, An Aussi, a jack x and a mixer. We also have a 12 month old so need to make it kid friendly too. I would like to have as much room for agility training as I can but not just grass from fence to fence. Would love a vegi garden And thinking that 2 dog pens would be good to lock dogs up and for visiting dogs to go. Attached house plan but it does't show block (sorry) it is just a rectangle with a slight slope forward. The back of the house faces NE (I think.. the sun will come up in back corner and set in front corner giving the side of the shed and house full arvo sun) not ideal but that is the way it sits. Show me your yard too so I can get ideas and we can all be jelouse ETA: Pic is hopless. There is small gap on the right and about the width of 1/2 the garage on that side. the distance from the back of the garage to the back of the house is the legnth of the yard plus a 3m easment

Hi I have looking at dog training books online and I hate that you can't flick through the pages. Any recomendations? I have done clicker training and love the results but it is self taught. I have a JRT, an Aussi, a BC and a BCx Kelpie. Obediance is boring but I'm interested in behavour, dog sports and tricks for mainly for fun and helping with attention. Geating started in clicker training by Karen Pryor....any good?

Hi I am very raley on DOL any more but figured you guys are a wealth of knowledge and should be able to help me out here. A dog I breed 3 years ago has come back into my care. I am greatful that the owners called me before taking him to the RSPCA but I cannot keep him and I'm not sure how the best way to home him is. I have done some rescue (I have one ATM) but I'm not comfortable putting him on a rescue website as he isn't really a rescue. I don't really want him around for to long as when ever I look at him I think of his Mum that died in very tragic circumstances just before christmas. Any suggestions welcomed PS he is a Rough coat JRT

Hi All Just wondering what people think is the better of "Unleasing the Velcro dog" and "Go the distance" Both of our dogs struggle to work away at agility but are very succsesful in Flyball. It must be something in the way we train. I'm hoping to fix them but also want to find where I went wrong so that we don't do it again.

Show Dog. Yes Linda is part of that team. what gave it away?

It was a non doggy person that sent it too me. I was laughing at work so hard people asked if I was OK

A TRIP TO ALDI Yesterday I was at my local Aldi buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet Dog, and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 20 kilos before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's bum and a car hit us both. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Aldi won't let me shop there anymore. P.S. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say. Forward this (especially) to all your retired friends......it will be their laugh for the day

Paul The Rogz frisbee is way better than the Kong one. But know ball wins hands down. But at least she plays with other toys now where as she never used to. The plated ball/rope ones are good. So are plastic bottles (thanks Vegas)

Hay my reply ran away.... I used one to teach her to tug but she still doesn't like to let go of the one she has in her mouth. I think it is pesseive (SP?)
-
Yeah she has one of thosem, I used it as way to get her to learn to tug. She still won't spit the one she has for the new one though. I think it is a possesive thing. Mine Mine Mine. And the one the dog in the other lane has is mine too so I'm gonna chase them for it, and coz I'm a hearding dog I'm gonna bark and do circles around them till they give it to me. GRRR if only she knew that is the reason she isn't alowed to do flyball atm.
-
Hi all I have been working with my BC x Kelpie for quite a while on her tugging. She has gone from a dog that wouldn't tug at all to one that really loves the game of tug. EXCEPT when she has a ball. The main issue with this is that I'm trying to get her to tug at flyball (For focus purposes) . So far she will do a run and if you can get the ball off her she will tug well. I have used many methods for getting the ball off her quickly but so far nothing we do can get her to drop it in her own. The TugIt with a chicken neck works well for one run instant ball spit but then the more runs the more ball holding she does. Trading for a peice of food has the same effect. I have even tried diffrent types of balls to see if there is one that isn't as good a tennis ball but they all seem to be equally as good. My new plan is this: please give opions *One run (with no ball in the box as she will do this) for a good tug session *One run (with ball) for good tug session, with out ball having to be removed from her mouth Then finish Do this 3 times in a training session for 2 or 3 sessions THEN *One run with no ball, good tuuging *One run with ball, good tugging as above *2nd run with ball, good tugging If at any time she does't give up the ball then the game finishes and we quietly walk back to the trailer and she gets in untill the next time. My theory is that she now likes tug and if I can make the main fun part of Flyball the tugging game at the end and ignore the ball then maybe i will get some where.

LOL yeah did you see the last Talk to the Animals that had Flyball on it? The big punchbowl is there's

Was great racing all weekend. Div 2 was 1 race between 1st and 2nd/3rd. 2nd and 3rd was a count back and there was only 1 heat in it. We are really happy as we were so close and only had Flea for 1 day. Div 5: Ballarat blitzed every one for 1st. 2nd only lost to Ballarat and one other race I think. (not %100 though) -
