initially I tried the collar twist as she was having no reaction whatsoever to the ear pinch, but the professional trainer finally found one little spot on her ear she reacted too, and that works much better, so this is what I have been using for a vast majority of the time. the clicker shaping and treats was something I tried before I started classes, and something I attempted once again for about 2 weeks after, when she wasnt responding to the collar twist and ear pinch. so I have been consistantly using the ear pinch method for about 2 months. I did take classes, and had help from lots of people very experienced in retriever training and trialing, and real hunting. while they help greatly with a majority of it, even they had difficulty with her resistance lol. it was quite funny in the beginng when she wasnt responding to the ear pinch at all, people that have been hunting and training for 60 years were puzzled

ok, my Toller will take the bumper on command from anwhere in my hand(raised in the air) she will run after the bumper, and marks like a dream, she will bring the bumper back to me, and she loves water. but I have one MAJOR problem...she will NOT pick up te bumper off the ground. I have been working with her EVERY SINGLE DAY for 3 months, AND have attended retriever training classes with her, with absolutly NO success, not even a teeny tidbit of progress. she will not pick it up to avoid pain(ear pinch or collar twist as learned in class) or for attention, or for treats or play. I have tried to get her to pick it up from a laying down postion(so she's closer to it) but all she does is roll over on her back. getting her interest by throwing it is usless, she just runs to the bumper all exited...and thats it, she just wanders off, wont even try to pick it up. I am at my wits end and beyond frusterated. does anyone have ideas on how to get her to pick the damn bumper up off the ground?

Flyball Dogs - Here Is The Team That Beat The Record

mine wasnt trained to ignore the other dogs lol flyball dogs tend to be competitive, IF the dog aggressive dog is one of the more focased dogs then their is no problem. Happy does not ignore the other dogs because she is trained not to(lol most people dont even know her name, she is "that evil dog") she ignores the other dogs only during a race for the sole reason that she is focased on the game. now if the asggressive dog is one that gets distracted easy..well thats another story entirly lol -

-
I am pretty open minded, my own dogs all need entirly differnt training methods, so if I was not open minded I would only have 1/7 trained dogs
-
sorry crashtestdummy, but no video of Leck this month, with Rustys sudden arrivel my money has to go to his neuter instead so you will ave to wait a bit longer for an obedience vid of Electra lol

lol I have 2 of those BCs(not litterally lol)... I cant keep my girls in a stay at the start line for nothin, nevermind that in every other situation they both of 100% perfect stays  as for the pressing firmly enugh thing..well actually that WORKS lol if I press firmly enugh on my girls as I tell them to stay, they realize I am serious and are much more likley to actually stay
-
uuuhhh I wouldnt say it says anything valid whatsoever... I could take a rag on a stick and get my retriever and terriers to do the exact same thing lol, my younger BC would jump around and try to eat it(she is EXTREMLY soft of stock by the way) and my older BC who is very good on stock(made long time trialers drop their jaws) would just sit there staring at the stick and doing nothing

in north america the average speed is much faster then in other places, we dont run up with our dogs because we havent got time. when you do see someone running up more then a couple steps with there dog its because the dog is green and needs little more guidence. Happys runs 3 second times and I start her from 30 feet, I havent got time to run forward with her, because I let her go, move 2 steps forward and she is already comming back so what I do is rush a few steps forward, scream her name and run like hell away from her. Misty is green though and doesnt run quite so fast in a tourny setting, so she is started farther up, and I have time to run toward the box with her before running back, though to be honest, 4.6 seconds feels like a lifetime when your used to running and 3.8 second dog lol as for the yelling? must be the videos, the people are noisier then the dogs most of the time lol -

lol people always think "hey my dog loves tennis balls....he'd be great at flyball!" lol it drived me nuts, love of the ball only gets the dog halfway there, the most important part is comming back, but once they have the ball, why should they come back? this is why love of the tug is what we want, love f the ball does not need to exisit, a ball retrival can be trained, the tug is the reward NOT the ball lol Happy is just my weird one who loves flyball and races her fastest not for a tug, not for a ball, she races for the sole reason of being competive. her reward is winning lol THAT is what makes her great, its does not matter who she is racing against, she will stare down her opponent, and run only fast enugh to beat her opponent. of coarse as a result I havent a clue how fast she can ACTUALLY run, only her fastest time she has had to run in order to win lol -

lol I would never worry about another dog thinking what Blair does. something is screwed up in his brain, normal dogs when something happens they get over it(some need a little more help then other depending on how bad the scare was) they have "bounce back" Blair does NOT, if something scares him even slightly he is petrified of it for life. the only reason we can stand living with his screwed up mind is because Electra seems to ease his mind when she is with him, and we have to take a lot of special precautions like if anyone is over he has to be kenneled as he gets so terrified he bits and bolts. if Leck is not with him at the dogpark he panics, bolts under the fence, then he's panics again because he has no clue where he is. -

it sometimes happens, but not often, most people introduce the ball to their dogs on their own time at home, so its not like its the first time they have seen a ball before or something. some dogs simpley wont retrieve on their own, so those handlers have to teach the ball as a totally seperate thing, but I havent met too many flyball dogs who dont know what to do with a ball flying at their face lol ...my pyrshep was taringing in Flyball, he cant do it though because when the ball was added to the box, and he hit the box and the ball flew at his face? he tought that was terrifying, he hates this crazy contraption that throws things at his head -
I will have a video of Leck doing Obedience in a few weeks, there is an obedience fun match on march 18th, I will have Leck in Pre-Novice and Misty in Novice.

both the tug and the ball are very special items that come out for flyball ONLY, tug training starts first the second the pup in in your possession. the ball is the absolute LAST thing added, only after everything else is trained, before that the ball is used only a few times and that is just to find out what way the dog turns for box training. we have a very specific order: -recalls on flat to the tug is the absolute ONLY thing done until the pup is about 6 months old -at about 6 months we start teaching the box turn, again with the tug. as well as the recalls being done with pups back feet on the box for the start. also we will wlak then on a leash over the jumps, tugging after each jump. -about 8 months the dog is doing recalls over low jumps placed close together. also at this age they are being sent to the box from in front of the first jump, doing a turn(no ball) and comming back over one jump..this progresses at the dogs pace until they are starting in front of the first jump, hitting the box and comming back over all 4. -9-10 months the dog is being started behind the first jump.....and progressing at their pace till they are running the full coarse no ball. -11 months you are working on the box alone with the ball. tug is shown to dog for motivation, then hidden behind handlers back, tug is not again produced unless ball is at the handlers feet, this progesses backwards pretty quickly as they already know the whole coarse. - by 12 months the dog is racing in tournys. -

someone stands beside the box.... the left side if the dog turns left, right if the dog turns right.... with there leg placed staright legged in front of the box(how far in depends on the dog, you have to experiment) just before the dog flys over the jump to hit the box you stick you knee in(like just bend your knee in towards your toe) then straighten your knee again as soon as the dog is hits the box. its a bit hard to explain without seeing it though. it forces the dog to turn because they see the ball and they have to go around you knee to get it, its just a quick snap in and out since the dog has to get off the box where your knee is lol. its works pretty much exactly the same way as the cone but you wont have a big orange prop hanginf around, when you do a warm-up race for example, and some dogs need is a refresher and others dont all you needs is a teammate to stand beside the box and use the knee for the dogs that need it. -

nope. I had never even heard of such a thing until I came here, everyone just uses what works best for there dogs, somes dogs its just a flat collar but most people just use a a normal H style harness. also most of the super fast teams DONT use the cone method for swimmers turn, we use a jump and a knee. -
oh, sure. until your dog has to do a sit stay in the obedience ring and decides to take that moment to go rag doll on you
-
lol, I have found that my BCs catch on quicker. they are not willing to do a millions reps but they dont need to because they have the trick solid after just a couple, and its burned in their brain for life, just because I dont remeber the trick, doesnt mean they dont lol they also work for absolutly anything, which I love, I dont have to have treats, but they are just as exited about "good girl" as they are about a hunk of sausage lol my Toller on the other hand is all food motivated, she has no desire whatsoever to work for a toy. she has a longer attention span, but she needs it because she sure as heck doesnt catch on very fast. she drives me nut, because when she doesn't want to do something she makes herself limp, ever tried to make a 35lbs rag doll do a sit stay?
-
'fraid not, that video was the first time she had ever done any obedience lol I would have had a video of her doing Rally yesterday but she decided to come down with kennel cough within a few minutes of finishing the confo. part in the morning lol you dont see many Tollers in obedience there? its quite the opposite here, there are plenty around here, but the only place you see them in agility and obedience. lol I shoulda taken videos of Shelby and Fini at the matches for ya

very short clip of Leck in pre-novice Misty, also in pre-novice and Mistys Rally-Obedience coarse

-I have 3 dogs that I train, but 6 dogs in the house. -I dont have a training schedual, I just train whenever I have the time, or the dogs are bored and its to cold to go outside. -not really, sometimes I do the training in the bathroom(I have a very large bathroom lol) so I can have one dog at a time without distractions, and sometimes I just crate the dogs I am not working with, this provides for more noise and distraction and I only use it for the more advanced dogs and for distraction work. -my girls are 6, 4 and 10 months, so obviously they are at differnt levels lol plus they are all trained in differnt areas, Happy cannot be trialed, she is fear aggressive with strange dogs, only things like Agility and Flyball get her exited enugh to ignore the other dogs, so while she is trained to a high enugh degree to compete in utility, she will never have the oppurtunity to actually do it. my 4 year old cant compete in anything like obedinece do to being intact and not registered, but I do pre-novice fun matches with her all the time. my 10 month old is still in the very early stanges, with her I am mostly just focasing on her show training, once she is finnished I will stop that entirly and focas on Obedience, agility and hunting. -I do have enuygh time for all 3 but I do tend to just do everything with them together lol -2 BCs and Toller, I prefer the BCs for training over the toller easy, I mean the BCs, I show them something once and their good to go, but the Toller takes a while lol
