  1. we just got a 4+ months old pup. she loves to get on the couch, to play with her toys, play with other dogs, or basically just lie down. I usually let them (2 whippys and a grey) into the house after I have come home from work. The whippys start to chase each other upstairs and then leap onto the couch to have some play. All these while, I am still downstairs, closing the gate to the garden. (those whippys are too fast for me!! ) so by the time I am upstairs, they are already on the couch. I tried to chase them off the couch once I am upstairs. But they would try to get up again and again (esp the puppy). Personally, I don't mind them on the couch, so long as they are invited. however, we often have guests and it is just plain rude to have dogs flying onto their lap while they are sitting on the couch. I have searched in the training forum about issue of keeping the dogs off the couch. Someone suggested to have a mat for them to go to and train them to lie down on the mat instead. I suppose there is some leadership issue here as well and we are working on it. My questions are : 1. How do I train them not to get on the couch? If it is to teach them to go on their mat, how do I go about doing that? 2. Can we train them to only get onto the couch when they are invited or will that confuse them? If we can train them to only get up on invitation, how do I do that? Thanks!!
  2. please forgive my ignorance. what is purely positive training? we just started puppy school and that is our first time so we can't really do any comparison.
  3. Miko and I went for our first puppy class this morning. I was introduced to clicker training. I understand what clicker training is bascially about. Good behaviour - click - treat... i have an adult grey and an adult whippy which i would like to start clicker training on too. should i separate them to train one by one? i would think so. if not, it gets confusing to other dogs when one is doing clicker training and the clicker keeps going while the other dogs are not performing a good behaviour.
  4. Miko (whippy pup - about 16 weeks) and I are starting puppy school tomorrow. Our first!! So we are pretty excited. What should I expect?
  5. i apologize for my ignorance. What is the difference between C3, C4 and C5? Are there price difference? Are they harmful to the doggie's body? I live in the urban suburbs. My dogs are outside during the day and in the house at night. They don't go into the bush. We visit the local dog park once a week. They don't stay in the kennels when we are away. They get dog-sit by kind DOLers. Everytime we go for vaccinations, the vet does not ask us what type we want to get. Well, even if he does, we don't know anything. So what should I be aware of?
  6. i kept thinking that any of those medicinal collars are not too good for greys. oops.. ignorant me.
  7. i have read somewhere that greyhounds do not do very well with tick collars. So we have never looked into getting that for any of our dogs.
  8. Nothing for now, you don't live in a tick area, just don't take the little pup into the bush. When the pup is older use the same products that you do on the older dogs. Yes, Drontal will take care of any tapeworm, which Advocate won't cover. oh good. I was still thinking of finding out if I am living in a tick area. But i do search through them pretty regularly (at least 2 to 3 times a week) for any odd things that are on them. thanks Greymate!!!
  9. i have read some discussion on DOL regarding this. Both my grey and whippy are on Proheart (recommended by our Vet). We have no problem.
  10. alright, i know there are quite a few discussions about advocate, advantix, worming and much more. i have read through some of them and i am still confused!! I have an adult greyhound and an adult whippet. Both had the annual heartworm injection. Both are on Advantix once a month and Drontal once every 3 months. Advantix : - Repels and kills paralysis ticks - Repels and kills brown dog and bush ticks - Kills fleas, reduces flea allergy dermatitis - Kills flea larvae - Repels and kills mozzies and sandfles - Controls lice I just adopted a whippet pup. She is about 3 months old. She has NOT had an annual heartworm injection which I will put her on when the other two dogs are due for theirs - to synchronise the timing. I am looking at putting the pup on Advocate and Drontal. Advocate : - Kills fleas and fleas larvae - Prevents heartworm - Controls intestinal worms and larvae - Controls demodectic mange and sarcoptic mange - Controls ear mites - Controls lice Alright, the confusion bits are : 1. I need to put the pup on heartworm treatment (i.e Advocate). But Advocate does not have tick prevention. What should I do? 2. Advocate has intestinal worms control. Should I then still put her on Drontal? Overall, am I missing anything for any of the 3 dogs? Sorry for the long post. I am hoping some DOLers can shed some light. Thanks!!
  11. i just thought she smelt like milk powder. Like how some human babies smell like milk powder. didn't realise that there might be underlying problems.
  12. yes, she smells like milk. so this is puppy breath!!!
  13. we just got Kelly, the whippy pup last night. she is a darling. however OH commented that she smells funny. it is not her coat but her breath. i never had a puppy before and was wondering if it was normal.
  14. i am so sorry to hear that. I hope he will get better soon!!!
  15. sorry to hear that you have lost Panda Bear. he had a good life becoz of you. RIP Panda Bear.
  16. excellent!! thanks guys. :p
  17. My greyhound girl loves fresh cow milk. Those that you can get from the milk department at the supermarket. I read somewhere that it is bad for them though coz they cannot digest it properly. Is it true? she does not get runny poo from it. i usually add about a third of a cup into her food. it helps to moist her food.
  18. be strong. cassie is in a good place. run free sweet girl.
  19. me too!! my dogs LOVE them. but i was wondering with the high salt content in the sardines, is it good to feed regularly?
  20. yes, they do grow very fast. i noticed one in the morning and the second half of the day, out pops another. i did some searching on DOL and quickly went out to get Curash. thank God it worked. the weather also had cooled down these few days so that helps but there were some on her back that she has been scratching and they became wounds. i had applied some Dakartan lotion on them last night and this morning and am monitoring them. tomorrow morning, she is going to have the Nizoral wash. fingers crossed that it will relieve her scratching. thanks for your advice. will update on her progress.
  21. would stripping the skin of oil make her skin dry and scabby? she is a greyhound and usually her coat is not really oily and we only bathe her once in 3 weeks.
  22. I just got Nizoral shampoo and Dakartin spray from the chemist yesterday. I started the spray on my greyhound girl who has sensitive skin yesterday. She had some hot spots which cleared up with some Curash cream. But she was still itchy and had some scabby spots which she scratched until they became wounds. I rubbed the lotion in for a while and left her. She started licking them off. Is the lotion going to be harmful to her? Also, since she has sensitive skin, should i bathe her with the Nizoral shampoo and then try the Aloveen conditioner on her?
  23. are we able to try out those anti bark collars before committing to purchase them? i have been reading about them in this forum and people have different views on whether they are effective in discouraging the dog to bark.
  24. funnily, according to the council, the person who complained about the barking, gave the reason that the barking caused his/her dog to be stressed!!! by the way, what does bark busters do?
