  1. I think they have also been based on "problem solving" abilities as well. :) Give me a terrier every time. I prefer a dog that can think for itself. I thought that was what "problem solving" abilities were. They have to work out the solution to the problem all by themselves. But I am sure we are all a bit bias  Admittedly in the terrier, 'think for itself' manifests in an independent, 'You want me to do what??'
  2. I believe it's the smartest breed followed by the Border Collie and then the GSD. :) It doesn't have to be kept in a frou frou clip either. Is it? I thought Borders were! Well there ya go :) Yep....I think you will find the BC's come first followed by the poodle :) Aren't these intelligence tests based on trainability? 4. Au contraire, people are suggesting people with allergies should find out what they're allergic to.
  5. Interesting you should say this because I well recall the amount of times you jumped down my throat in the castigating way because I had a different opinion on dog breeding, particularly in regards to genetics and heritable diseases.
  6. One of the broadest, most incorrect generalisations I've ever read ... I've got 3 sat here playing with me right now that are in perfect health and soundness, three for less than the price of one, three times the love and joy! I've had champion bred show stock all my life, they all scooped the pools in their puppy classes but, alas, all too soon the fully health tested, immaculately bred from supreme bloodlines, high falootin', who's up who & who's not paying the rent famous pups found their way to vet surgeries to finally be PTS despite all best efforts - 2 for hips (different breeders) and an Akita Inu for a congenital nerve condition that saw him having bouts of being completely paralysed. Oh and lets not forget his plethora of allergies and temperament issues (one of the breeder's Imp stud dogs tried to kill him) - $4k to buy him and probably just as much again, if not more, spent in trying to save him. Was the breeder interested in compensation, another pup, contribution towards vet bills? Not on your bloody life they weren't!!! They're the 3 cases that immediately spring to mind. All I'm saying is, buying any dog is the luck of the draw (having a good eye, commonsense, some knowledge and intuition goes a long, long way) and there's lots of factors that come in to it, not the least of which is nature and environment. I appreciate and understand that this is a pedigree dog forum and breeders are all dedicated to trying to do the right thing. However, there are none so blind as those who won't see, and narrow-mindedness, self-righteousness and relying on health tests as though they're some sort of gospel is just pure, unadulterated BS that all amounts to nothing when the shit hits the fan. ALL any buyer can hope for is the best of luck, be it their beloved pet comes from a reg'd breeder, a BYB or the gutter - my personal experience is that I've never had an ounce of trouble from my rescues or BYB, whereas ALL my issues, heartache, pain and expense have been incurred by pedigreed show dogs. That is all. If you dislike pedigree dogs and their breeders that much, I wonder at you being on a pedigree dog forum. LMFAO, what a puerile, ridiculous statement to make. What part of my posts were you unable to comprehend that caused you to arrive at that conclusion petal? The parts above where you complain about the poor pedigree dogs you've had and how the rescues and BYB bred dogs you've had are so much better. It wasn't a difficult conclusion to arrive at especially since you jumped in to defend BYBs after Dogmad's post.

  8. I would avoid oodles no matter who they're registered with.
  9. Great idea. The people behind the app have a great future ahead of them.
  10. Having dogs whether pedigree or rescue/BYB/poundies, etc, is not about money, it's about ethics. I know that my pedigree dogs are ethically bred by honourable people. Were I to go down a crossbreed route, I would choose a pound dog or one from an ethical rescue. I cannot use the word ethical about BYB or puppyfarmers. The person I get a dog from is as important as the dog. I also note wryly that reporting the FB pages doesn't seem as important in this thread as lambasting the people selling the dogs.
  11. I am also curious to know why Bosdog was chosen and also why 'Aussie' is stuck in front of it as though it's supposed to ring a the bell of patriotism. Bosdog seems a bit random, though it's certainly better than Steve's other crossbreed of choice's name: the Aussie Cobbadog. I have no objection to talking about non-ANKC breeds because there are many: here (such as the Murray River) and overseas (such as the kerry beagle, which is only recognised by the IKC). Nor do I object to breeds in development being discussed. It seems a bit dumb to exclude these and I say this with all the snootiness of the purebred dog snob.
  12. Experience with a terrier is a plus certainly but I don't tend to recommend wheatens to anyone let alone people whose criteria appears to be (a) non-shedding and (b) medium sized. I suggest if she expresses an interest in any breed, she joins an email or Facebook community to learn more about them. Though if she wants grooming, grooming, more grooming and 14+ years of the sort of sense of humour that says, 'And now, what can I get into next?' she may qualify as a long-suffering wheaten slave.
  13. Perhaps put off the husband by pointing out that oodles are part poodle, guaranteed to drain half his testosterone.
  14. A breeder of that sort in Gippsland will be a puppyfarm. Ask her what kind of dog she likes. Non-shedding is only one criteria as is size. A lagotto fits both but so does a wheaten terrier and they're two very different breeds. Plus, how long does she want to wait? She sounds like an 'I want it now!' person. Various of the non-shedding medium-size breeds are not large in number. Will she wait? If not, let her get her oodle.
  15. Here's something out of left field. Post on Mark Zuckerbeg's Facebook page and ask him to do something about it. His little dog is all over his timeline. Until Facebook goes public, it's his site.
  16. We actually tell people here to go to a show to meet the breed they're interested in. The general public don't know how dog shows work. They don't know not to bother people before they go in the ring. How would they know when an exhibitor is going to go in the ring? Do they even know to ask? Probably not. They don't know not to touch the dogs. Snapping peoples' heads off isn't going to endear people to pedigree dogs if their owners act like arseholes.
  17. yes, yes they are, and they multiple :) I was going to ring the police tomorrow and ask for advice (today being ANZAC I thought they may be busy) but Dad won't say 'no" to them and with 2 small boys at home I don't want to put the people off side and have a mob turn up (it could be rather messy). Unfortunatly I don't think there is any getting through to dad so I'd rather head them off before they reach him, the dog barking would help me do that. He (dad) sits with them out the front, then the smoking starts, the swearing and stories of how sad their life is (which it maybe but still its not their $ and dad doesn't want to give more) At 6 am we are not up so can't save him as such, if the dog barks we can get up and sticky beak (making up a story like i did today, where dad and i went out so they had to leave, while the hubby and kids stayed home so the house was occupied) Sounds bad, but it started as 1 lady he felt sorry for and helped, then the lady and her friend turned up to help dad to the bank and then the ladies sister turned up looking for the original lady :S (since the original lady and dad are such good friends). I don't really know that it is a police matter as such (dad being the way he is) but I will ring them tomorrow My suggestion is get up! Lock the gate and do not give your father a key. That way if they get in, they're trespassing. Don't involve the dog/s, do it yourself.
  18. Why don't you wait for them to turn up and have a local police officer there? They're scamming.
  19. Thanks to Lillypilly and tdierikx I've ordered two bags from VetnPetDirect, though they won't arrive until next week. I asked if I could get them couriered and they said no, which pissed me off entirely. A little flexibility in online business is required, thanks. I will let the vet know. How far past a use-by date can dry dog food be used? Anyone know? Thanks very much. I considered the Z/D Ultra but it has chicken in it, though it's hydrolised.
  20. Grumpy report: he had Holistic Select last night and this morning. Poo was a bit softer than the day before but given he went straight onto it from the Sensitivity Control that's pretty good. No tummy troubles.
  21. Thanks Bacardi. I'll check out the ingredients.
