  1. The best thing someone who wants a puppy can do is educate themselves about the health issues in their breed of choice. You don't need to know genetics in depth, you just need to know enough to ask the right questions and know if the answers you're getting are rubbish.
  2. Or people could start with the Khan Academy: Genetics 101.
  3. Maybe I should start taking notes. It may be quite interesting. Could be intersting to do. One point though, every dog you groom would most likely be a 'pet" and not of breeding stock as any breeder/exhibitor would be grooming their own dogs and not sending them to a dog groomer. So sadly, you are potentially seeing the bottom end of the gene pool in the area you reside in. That said however, many good breeders sell quality health tested Show potential puppies as pets as you can only run on so many dogs. Assumption much?
  4. How is Ned today, efowler? I'm curious to know if his apparent anxiety problems are manifesting at the kennels.
  5. Instead of spending loads of money to no purpose, they could just go to the kelpie muster.
  6. I'm sorry but someone actually used KKK? As a brand name?
  7. No, my dog is not a sheep (Grumpy).Fortunately, aside from getting mistaken for a mini schnauzer on occasion, Mini just tends to get 'Awwwww, isn't she cute!'
  8. Don't forget the offer from Steve at K9Pro, I think it was, to help with Ned, too. efowler, thanks for your fantastic effort with Ned. Please keep us updated on how he's settling in.
  9. People talk about when quality of life has gone. I have a dog with Cushings and other issues and I'm hoping the medication will help but he will tell me when he's ready to leave me, I am convinced of that.
  10. Thanks Red Dog NZ. I will look at that forum today. I noticed a few muscle spams this morning, particularly around his head. He has had a low fat diet for a while now because of pancreas issues (which of course we now know is part of the Cushings). He does have some complicating kidney issues which will mean a high protein diet may not be the best. He is on a fish and fish kibble diet currently as he can't have chicken and various other protein sources. He does very well on Woolies home brand sardines!
  11. Not necessarily.... I know of a "Puppy Wholesaler" who travels the state buying entire litters from "Backyard Breeders" and then on-sells these to the retail Pet Stores. He has NEVER bred a litter himself, so no, not a Farmer. I only know how this particular 'dealer' operates, but I can assure you.... if just ONE puppy who goes through this channel has Parvo, they will ALL have Parvo. Entire litters in the back of his car.... all in together..... no quarantine. Often they are IMMEDIATELY on-sold to the retailer, before he could even have noticed any signs of illness. It's bloody awful. And totally under the radar. Why doesn't DPI step in and demand the details of this 'wholesaler' to investigate their so-called procedures?
  12. How delightful. I wish I could go. Well done to the organisers for acknowledging the great job the military dogs and their handlers do.
  13. Bumping up this topic as my darling Grumpy has been diagnosed with Cushings and is now on Trilostane. I am told and from my googling it takes a while to get the dosage right. I haven't noticed many side effects though he has become a bit wobblier. It will be 10 days on Thursday since he started on the medication and we'll be back at the vet to do the next round of testing. Grumpy does have weak back legs and I'm wondering how long it was before people saw any improvement?
  14. I see Pet Stock has Earthborn Holistic. Anyone use that?
  15. I'm not just talking about McGreevy's latest.
  16. Has any of these studies that the University of Sydney has done actually assisted dogs?
  17. I've come to the conclusion m-sass just posts to derail threads in order to make them about m-sass. It's rather like a 5 year old chucking a wobbly in a supermarket to get attention.
  18. Much sympathy. I have to look for a new food for Grumpy once his current bag runs out. Fish, no chicken, no animal fat, low protein, low phosphorus. Grumpy's vet suggests we do a home made diet via a someone in the US who's been recommended to him. Need to get some details.
  19. I don't recall the price but there seemed to an improvement at first but later turned out not to be as he wasn't suffering from anything cartrophen could assist with.
  20. I know very little about Northern Ireland law but given it's a British province it should be subject to FOI laws. Was that tried or does a council there not fall under FOI?
  21. Sally Adams at North Geelong. Adrian is really good, too, and I've heard very good things about Ulrike.
