Poor bloody dogs. But hey, it's okay cos they don't get puppies from dog farms, just from the occasional 'oops' litter.

I think if you believe your vet is overcharging you on anything then challenge them on it. My dogs' vet gives me a discount on Grumpy's medication and ensures I understand the cost of it all. For example, Grumpy is on Vetoryl (trilostane) for his recently diagnosed Cushing's disease. Hamish said the medication is expensive (I shrugged, indifferent to the cost) and said that once the medication amount stabilised, we could go to a cheaper, compounded medication that is made up by a lab. I have no objection to putting the vet's kids through university but I can understand people wanting to look for cheaper alternatives. However, I don't understand why people just whinge about potentially being overcharged when you could just ask the vet about why medications cost what they do.

You sound very determined! My suggestion also is to get loads of work experience in working in boarding kennels. It probably won't pay much to start with. You should also look into what courses you could do that would help. Business qualifications, accounting, law, marketing, and importantly, animal care, grooming, etc. I imagine the set up would be very expensive so maybe have a savings plan, too, because you'd want a fair amount of capital behind you. I would also start looking at researching where there is a need for boarding kennel businesses.

Just the odd "oops" litter, it seems ... The parents live on a farm so it is ok. Probably the same farm where children's pets go to live, right?

How do you know???? It is part of DOL membership that one is NOT to even go inside a PP. One is allowed to yell abuse from outside of course. That's 'educate people'. Handwritten cardboard sign attached to a light pole saying 'staffie pups 4 sale'? That's "English Staffie" please. Blue English staffie.... Real sign.

Potential Removal Of Lipoma?

Has the vet done a fine needle aspirate to ensure it is just fatty material? -

I think there are two important points here: * Not all registered breeders are ethical. Sad, but its true. * IF you buy from an ethical registered breeder, the odds of you being bitten are pretty low. You can educate till the cows come home but that's only if people are willing to listen. I see no positive side to a situation in society where pups can be bought on a whim or with the click of the "add to cart" button on the internet. If ethical registered breeders are not a very large part of the answer to the issues of unwanted dogs in society then please tell me what those answers are and why. And there it is really. Those in this thread pushing buying puppies from pet shops cannot come up with any reason why it is a better thing to do other than that they seem to be forced to buy from a pet shop because an ethical registered breeder might ask them a few questions or make them wait.
-
I get that but I'm not going to allow ANKC breeder behaviour to be the rationale for BYBs and pet shops to be advocated as appropriate sources of pups. You don't fix one issue but giving worse alternatives as the solution. This.

Who's denying anything??????? That was probably me. I think I used the term 'fiction'.

Holistic in the context means wellbeing, I think, but most people probably think it means organic.

So Annoyed! They Changed The Ingredients
Sheridan replied to best4koda's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well, I've run out of the Royal Canin blue whiting. Waiting on an order of the Eukanuba veterinary fish one to come in. Had to feed the Grumpy man a bit of Eaglepack Holistic salmon and anchovy last night and his tummy was very noisy. Enormously smelly fart, thankfully just the one, though. -
While I wouldn't take a dog on terms as described by Dogmate, the questionnaire (or the 3 hour interview that I had) gives information about you. Ethical registered breeders give the third degree because they want to have their pups go to people they can trust, the very best homes. I would be concerned if there was no interview or questionnaire.

It doesn't matter what state bodies codes of ethics say. No ethical breeder would sell to a pet shop no matter whether the shop was a PIAA member or not And no ethical dog lover would promote such places.

Just because a member has a difference of opinion it doesn't make them a troll! Yet when someone signs up just to post in one thread about that one opinion, loudly, it does make them a troll. Sorks has posted in the parvo thread in news ... to take a pop at registered breeders.

Perhaps you should have done your registered breeder homework better. As to your story about the pet shop, do please name this paragon. You should also have done your homework on DOL before joining.
-
No, not god like but pet shops that sell animals, where do you think they source their animals from? Puppy farms, BYB, and unethical registered breeders. I don't know anyone who would want to be an apologist for these but it appears you do. You appear to be puzzled that DOLers disagree with you. You're on a pedigree dog forum. Why on earth did you imagine you would get anything other than short shrift from a group of people who hold ethical breeders to the most stringent of standards? If you cannot understand this most basic of things then this is not the place for you.

I think you're on the wrong forum. Ta ta.

BDJ, I spent three hours on the phone being interviewed by the breeder of my wheatens and that was after talking to another breeder at a show who referred me on. I think some registered breeders could do a better job of explaining why they have that interview as well as explaining why people have to wait sometimes for a puppy.
-
Yes, sometimes it is hard getting through the registered breeder interview but so worth it in the end. They ask the tough questions because, unlike a pet shop or BYB or puppy farm, they care where their puppies end up.

I walked past a PP one day and said loudly that the puppies bellies were so fat that they'd have to be filled with worms.

Can we not troll the newbie, please? -
Troll! Don't feed it! Oh yes, 'sorks' has already had a go at breeders elsewhere.
