  1. I'm basing my opinion of McGreevy on what he has said on Catalyst and elsewhere rather than his student's opinion of him. Please state your evidence of where Pav or I have said the above in this thread? Why not go straight to the source? Most researchers working through unis have a uni email/contact details if it's so concerning just go and ask him to clarify his position. The heckling that goes on in these threads would be amusing if it wasn't so sad.

  3. If it helps, West Queanbeyan vet has emergency hours on a Sunday.
  4. When people resort bullying and ridicule to shut down what they don't want to hear discussion is pointless. Sorry Corvus, hope you get some good ideas. How is that question either bullying or ridicule?
  5. I suspect you just said a lot more about yourself than Paul McGreevy. I promise you, he's not interested in ending pedigree dogs. He's VERY interested in the long-term health of pedigree dogs. He doesn't think that necessarily means ending them. I hope you don't! He has the desire and the means to be a big help. Propagating hatred towards him in pedigree dog circles is probably at best unnecessary and at worst counter-productive. But hey, what would I know? I've only hung out with him talking dogs for the last 2 1/2 years. When someone who has hung out with McGreevy for 2 1/2 years qualifies a statement about his interest in the long term health of pedigree dogs by saying he doesn't "necessarily" think that means "ending" them, then I think Pav's concerns are well justified.
  6. Your original post indicated that the pup was injured at the pound due to the pound's chutes, which says to me they should be obliged to pay for the surgery. Now that you've explained it, I know better. Thank you.
  7. No point in being optimistic if you know who the vested interest people are. Not all of them like dogs, not all of them have dogs best interest at heart.
  8. that's just part of the issue, isn't it? it'd need to be a panel of independent, unbiased, knowledgeable and sensible people from inside and outside the breeding community, surely. Wouldn't want to leave it to chance and have it become a farce like BSL. And given people are people, farce is a given.
  9. Okay but people are offering to donate and I'm still wondering if the pound is paying the vet bills. No matter if it happened before or after the pup landed at the end of their chute, isn't it still their responsibility to pay for the pup's care?
  10. I think a blood test for cortisol (hormone) gives an idea. You'd have to train the dog to be cool about having it's blood taken first. or some way of measuring what's in the blood while doing the "experiment". Or you might be able to do a mass testing of dogs at dog club - and then compare steroid levels with collar types. But it would be hard to attribute cause from that. I was thinking it could be fairly straight forward for vets to report to an online database - patients that come in with neck injuries or trachea problems and what kind of collar they came in with and what their owner says they usually wear. With humans you can see some nice bruising and swelling - it's a bit harder to see that in dogs. I actually asked Emily Larlham about this at her seminar on the weekend. She only told me verbally so I don't have links unfortunately but she said that studies have shown that cortisol levels are unreliable. She said they tested cortisol of abused and non abused women and both could either have high, normal or low levels and there was no real pattern. I would be interested to find out more. How would you use cortisol to measure stress in a dog that already has an overdose of cortisol (Cushings) or not enough cortisol (Addisons)? The results would be daft.
  11. You're obviously not a P-plater, tarred with the brush of all the moronic things some P-platers choose to do! Which has the direct result of insurance being much higher for P-platers.
  12. Not research into dogs but research into owners, fitting in with JulesP suggestion on dangerous dogs.
  13. Well, I hope this pound is paying for the treatment of this puppy and not expecting rescue to pick up the bill.
  14. What kind of lunatic pound has a drop off 'chute' where dogs can get injured like that?
  15. Okay, bit of an update. I had a good chat with the local animal physio and am making an appt to take Grumpy to her for an assessment next week. She said they get all sorts of dogs at various stages of health (including mental health!) and they have a good discussion with the dog's vet, too. I was very pleased with our discussion about the grumpy man.
  16. I think we discussed that one, too, JulesP. The grain free one is quite high in fat. Given Grumpy's pancreatic issues, we're looking for something that is around 12% or below.
  17. Arrived home to find Grumpy in a bit of a state. He can't work out how to back backwards and gets stuck if he can't turn around. He got himself between the two dog kennels. Lord knows how long he was there for. He was quite frazzled by it, poor boy.
  18. I have to find Grumpy some new food after our short experiment with Eukanuba veterinary didn't work too well. It hasn't made Grumpy sick but he does have a noisy tummy at night, a concern given his Cushing's and low grade pancreatitis. I talked over Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Canadae, and Holistic Select with his vet. The vet would prefer Wellness or Holistic Select given the lower fat content. What would people suggest? Is there much to choose between them?
  19. Except they're clearly not fixing a lack of compliance.

Nice article, though I query if DAS finds the dogs homes or if those who rescue from DAS do? I particularly like that he said some nice things about staffies and his bull terrier.
  21. Yes, though it won't fit in my current car! There was a post above yours that was clearly spam. Someone probably reported it.
  22. This is an old topic, folks, but thanks. :)
