  1. Sounds good. In terms of fencing between dogs and small critters, suggest making it dig proof and entry proof. My house has a concrete path all the way around it much to Grumpy's dismay.
  2. Not sure how much fauves shed. Trisven13 is the person to ask.
  3. I admit I don't know oodles of Standards, but I have met more than a handful, including two that we see on a regular basis. I have found their temperaments quite varied as I find with Wheatens, but my Wheaten is more of a handful than both the Standards I know well, though Olle is at the more exuberant end of the Wheaten spectrum. (Actually, that may be the biggest difference Wheatens are giddier and more apt to clownish behaviour.) I think they both need experienced dog owners as they can be stubborn and more difficult to train for that reason. I don't know anything about schnauzers of any size. I think people think wheatens are easier because of that clownish behaviour, which cleverly disguises what cunning little brains they have. Amiable rather than biddable. It's 'Sure, I'll do that! ... ... Later.'
  4. No but we board alot of Wheatens in pet homes & for a breeder with top show dogs . I have also handled Wheatens in the show ring . I have owned Kerry Blues & Bedlingtons & handled many Terrier breeds . I have shown the Top Std Schnauzer in this State & he alos lived with us for many years & i am still involved in the Stds AS far as trainability of a Wheaten to Std yes they are far easier & biddable in every way Pity you're overseas and Grumpy has passed away. He'd have changed your mind.
  5. Stds & Wheatens are chalk & cheese in Natures & owner requirements. A Wheaten is a much easier dog to live with & train in every fashion. A Std Schnauzer gurading compared to a Wheaten is also at a very different level . Stds are not easy to live with & require the right owner for it to be a life long match & alot of dedicated time as a pup. They are wonderful dogs BUT the are not for everyone ,i have been around them for over 25 yrs & would own a Wheaten before a Std. Whilst there background jobs are the same there is a different level of intensity as to how they do it & how they fit in a family life as well Do you own wheatens?
  6. Very real estate! Great idea, juice.
  7. Underneath the blonde, the wheaten head is an irish terrier head. The irish terrier has a racier body style, though.
  8. Now that's one I would like to see, if it actually exists.
  9. Very true. I was called by various breeders in the past couple of years saying they'd had dogs returned to them, could I help. Although, I would have loved to, there was no way I would have added another dog when I still had Grumpy. And a puppy would have been out of the question. Far too stressful for him. That said, there will a wait for a puppy anyway.
  10. The off leash part did put me off a little, my sister in law has one and its so beautiful and so cute but she is so independent that its very hard to keep her in control when you need her to be, its not really off the list as per say just unsure it will adapt well to our lifestyle and requirments The dogs that do really well off lead are the dogs that are really well trained. Or the ones like these.
  11. And if they didn't have a vendetta before ... well ...
  12. Bless you Sheridan for your usual constructive, supportive, positive, caring and nourishing posting. You are an example to us all. Providing a once off $100 to someone rescueing a dog is helpful but only in the short term. You may not like that but it's the truth. You're going to be all 'I helped kelpiecuddles rescue this dog!' but it's not you who are going to be left with the vet bills.
  13. As a matter of fact, I just met a Wheaten at the vets with my unreal dog (mini schnauzer) lol and commented to the owner as he did to me that they are so similar in look, besides the colouring, to each other. I don't know if this is the correct way, but she was groomed just like Schnauzers are supposed to be groomed. The standard Schnauzer is very comparable to the size of the Wheaten. They both need the grooming, so what's the difference? Personality, I assume.
  14. While people are suggesting other breeds, suggest you call a few wheaten people. Will PM you with suggestions.
  15. You might want to change the thread title. Might need some help from people suggesting dogs from other groups. I know the terriers pretty well but I'm a bit lost in the other groups.
  16. Excellent point. One other thing just about completely missing from every puppy add is the price. So without phoning and asking the newbie probably perhaps? Is assuming they are going to cost more than a pet shop or a trading post, gumtree or wherever. Is that a good or a bad omission, never thought of it before your question. I think ads should include a price. It would save a lot of hassle at both ends of the phone/email.
  17. One of the most athletic dogs I've seen was a standard called Elvis. He used to bolt around the park near where I lived and took the most flying leaps off the pier then swim back to shore. Can never understand why people think poodles are just girly dogs.
  18. So? Are you comfortable with the RSPCA making sure as many animals as possible are destroyed rather than rehomed? Is that not the original subject of this thread? Inez, I have asked a question. If you don't know the answer, that's fine, but your chest heaving indignation at me asking a question is pointless. Answer it, don't answer it, but ditch the strop.
  19. Radio controlled by the look of the avatar. My OH is heavy into RC flying. Costs nearly as much as the dogs and some of those planes are huge  A calm dog then.
  20. The RSPCA, like it or not, don't just turn up at a place and say, 'Give us your horses.' They turn up because someone has reported something about an animal. And before you get all indignant I haven't made a judgement on the owner at all.
  21. I think Steph M and others that a lot of that 'why a pedigree puppy' info is lost on DOL because the home page is very busy. I was actually thinking of starting a website dedicated purely to promoting why pedigree dogs are great and what to look for but getting the time to write it is a bit difficult at the moment.
  22. The thing I think is curious is the naming of the breed. They're not 'pitbulls', they're American Staffordshire Terriers. That signifies one of two things: they've actually identified the dogs or worse, they've decided that amstaffs are the new dangerous breed du jour.
