  1. Mini is the most congenial of bedfellows. She doesn't snore or take up loads of space. She keeps to her side of the bed. Unlike Grumpy, who snored loudly and grudgingly allowed me a couple of inches, if he felt like it.
  2. Late to the thread. Glad to hear he's doing okay. Can I ask, what was his vaccination regime before you forgot?
  3. No, there shouldn't be a mess for any shelter or pound to clean up but it is the shelter or pound that makes the decision to kill the animal. The animal is now owned by them and they make the decision. Don't deflect their poor decision by going back to someone who no longer owns the dog.
  4. If the lady has restraining orders and is concerned for the safety of the dogs, there may be something in the recent changes to the Family Law Act that may help. I recall something about pets being covered in domestic violence cases.
  5. Suggest that if the WA Govt is concerned about RSPCA animals being destroyed unnecessarily then they should do something about it.
  6. The overall issue for me is despite the instinct of the dog, it takes time and patience to train a good vermin hunter. That way you get the dog you want, so how much are you prepared to do? You obviously do a lot with your dogs and this would be one more thing. Nevermind the yappiness of a breed, you can train the dog not to bark while working. If you want a dog that doesn't sound yappy, I'd go the irish terrier (ours was once mistaken for a german shepherd!) but a breeder of any terrier should be able to tell you whether their hunting instincts have been breed out of them (if the breeder is honest!).
  7. Sheridan, I don't understand your concern with this. Adoption doesn't imply free, so why the need to differentiate a dog for sale vs for adoption? Because they are for sale. You pay for them, they're for sale. And I'll add, adoption is an AR term designed to make people feel guilty for buying a dog from a breeder.
  8. It isn't just grass seeds. What out for thistle spikes, too. Mini had two in her toe recently.
  9. Call it what it is: a price. It's not adoption, it's a dog for sale.
  10. DOLers have been complaining about this since I've been a member. And everytime a thread like this comes up, someone says what you've said about being proactive. Then someone will suggest a FB page or a brochure (many years ago, that was me, when brochures were the thing) or a sticker or a website. At some point someone will demand to know what others are to promote pedigree dogs. And then everyone realises that someone actually has to do the work. That's the point where the thread dies. Until next time when the whole thing starts all over again.
  11. What no *grin*? You normally post one when you're not being funny. You have totally taken what I wrote as a 180 degree turn from what was meant. Read it again, "T".
  12. Hold up your phone and say brightly that you've just captured the kids being cruel to an animal, the father encouraging it, and the owner not protecting her dog. You're sure That RSPCA show will be interested.
  13. What do they do with pups they don't want to show then? Drown them to keep them out of the hands of the majority pet owning public? What that usually means is that they won't breed JUST for the pet market. The dogs not wanted or identified as show prospects are sold as pets. Thats exaxtly how it was meant, lucky. No drowning as far as i know! It does devalue the pet buyer a bit too, which is a shame but each to their own and whatever works for you. Then they are breeding for the pet market. I have no time for breeders like this.
  14. The same can be said for breeders of pedigreed dogs... how do you know that they are reputable or ethical either? A membership to the CC in their state and papering dogs isn't the only indicator that someone is likely to be "reputable"... it's all about researching where you are wanting to source the dog/pup from... T. In some instances it is easier to have a breed that is numerically small. You get to know everyone.

  16. We got our first two irish terriers and our first kerry blue from ads in the paper.
  17. Imagine the good it may do the numbers of dogs that end up in pounds if the RSPCA did a campaign about buying a padlock for your gate so your dog doesn't escape.
  18. I chose 'Yes, only of a certain type/look (eg herding breed, bull breed, spitz, retriever etc)'. Although my instincts were to say 'I would rather not get a dog at all', on the off chance that there was a wheaten, kerry, glen, or irish terrier in a shelter/pound/rescue, I would buy from one of these. I'd also be open to one of the Scottish terrier breeds or a dachshund. I wish DOLers wouldn't fall into the trap of saying 'adopt'. You don't adopt from a pound or shelter or rescue, you fork out your money like you would for a breeder. Adopt is a AR term designed to make people feel guilty for buying a dog and I refuse to use it.
  19. Presumably your pet is some sort of pristine creature that exists only in a bubble. No I am just polite enough not to have my animals jumping all over furniture meant for humans in a place other than my own, what sort of comment is that anyway! And Altho I have never taken my kids to a vet, if I did they would sit quietly and not touch other people animals unless they asked. However I have had my goldie there (at my feet) waiting for a Dna sample to be taken, and there was a person with 2 dogs on the seat one looked like it had mites and the other a excited male layin on it's gut. Anyway they go into the treatment room and a lady with her german shep pup come in and a 3 yr old child she heads to the counter and asked the little to go sit, she races over and before I had a chance to say not that seat she planted her hands and climbed up, and because i started to talk to her she got shy and put her hands in her mouth!!!!! The mother came over and looked at me and I told her what was on the seat 3 minutes before her daughter, Her asked me to hold her dog while she demanded the nurse take her at the back to clean her daughters hands with disinfectant! Which I would have done too it was down right disgusting. No i don't think some should have different treatment to others but that would mean no dog, clean behaved, dirty or sick should be on a seat. You and your children would be subjected to far worse germs than are on a dog in a vet surgery. And goodness me, one of your complaints is that dogs shed! Good grief.
  20. Presumably your pet is some sort of pristine creature that exists only in a bubble.
  21. That was taken before I got him, Boronia! He would have been living with his breeder's son at that point. Grumpy man was a most independent boy and I wonder what the look was for! :D No, we don't. They're family, after all. :) Thanks, harley. We're good. Miss Mini has become quite bossy since Grumpy left us. Reminds me of him.
  22. My first wheaten was a bit of a mountain goat. Would climb anything. When we went to the vet, he'd climb up on the first empty chair then climb across the rest until he found one he liked. Only one vet nurse called me on it and then the practice manager came out and said, he does that all the time. She was completely unconcerned.
