Kidney Disease & Fussy Eaters
Sheridan replied to greytpets's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My wheaten who had kidney disease was a fussy eater and wouldn't touch the Hills Prescription food. What food does your dog like? -

Because of Sam's breed, presumably. If he was a small white fluffy, no one would be interested. -
+2 for Nekhbet's advice. It's very hard to decide. The only pressure is that which you place upon yourself. If she's not ready to go, she simply won't. If she is, she'll let you know. Let us know how she goes.

Wow, what breed do you have??

My kerry girl wasn't food motivated until (a) she realised that Grumpy would eat everything if she didn't (b) she realised the policy in this house was 'eat it or lose it' and most importantly © I started feeding her fish. She's dead keen on sardines and tuna.

Metropolitian Police Mistake Kills Famil Pet.

Well, that sentence doesn't make much sense in the end. The police were unaware the dog was dead? Well then, who had the dog pts? And whose job is it to tell the police that an appeal was lodged? Were they just supposed to know? It doesn't sound like a police stuff-up, it sounds like a solicitor or court stuff up and if that's so, then the police are not to blame. I somehow doubt they're psychic. poor sentence structure. It should probably read something like this: Sam was already dead as the police were apparently unaware that an appeal had been lodged Still not their fault. The fault belongs to whoever was supposed to notify them. Plus, it doesn't say who pts the dog. -

Wouldn't F10 do the job? -
That's interesting, Miz J. So, you don't actually get legal possession of Henry until he's desexed? Worth a thought.

This Is My Cute Little New Puppy, Georgea

I actually think that's a really valid point. Perhaps the requirements for placing a litter listing on DOL should be stricter? I PM'd Troy about this some time ago (when the Dogs ACT August Gazette came out). I listed each of the breeders who have exported dogs to MacDougal who also list on DOL. Some of them have BIS dogs, too, so it's not just people who have a registration just so the pet shop in Hawaii can say they sell registered puppies. -
And if the mean for the onset of a heritable disease is 4-6?
-
People seem to think that it's only 'registered in name only' breeders who do this but it isn't. A cursory check of the CC gazettes clearly shows this isn't the case.

Take her back, get blood and urine tests done.

Yep, I'd go for Ziwipeak, too. -
I'll double check on these with the vet. Wheatens, to compound the issue, are 'sensitive' to a particular anaesthetic but I can't recall which off the top of my head.
-
Factor in Grumpy's reaction to the painkiller a couple of months ago. He's already not quite there, which is my main concern, of course.
-
I asked the vet previously about a 'twilight' anaesthetic and he said there wasn't much difference between the two. I don't think a local anaesthetic would be good because Grumpy would panic. I'll ask about sedation when I give him a call. Last time I discussed this, he did mention that Grumpy's teeth could do with a clean because he can't have bones anymore. Wazz, I'm reading the other thread. Big range of opinions.
-
Just want people's opinions/experiences on old dogs coping with anaesthetic. Grumpy has a cyst on his chin, which he keeps scratching and thus, it keeps bleeding and doesn't heal. Back when the vet could still examine Grumps and not nearly lose his hand, he took a look and said that if necessary, they could basically remove and cauterise it under anaesthetic. Well, it's still happening and Grumpy is just over 13 and a half. He's very healthy but understandably, I'm hesitant to anaesthetise him given his age. The vet cannot examine him without Grumpy being muzzled anymore, I'm sorry to say, because Grumpy is old and grumpy. Old but fast, said the vet, and the offending cyst lies under the muzzle, of course. What, therefore, to do? Would you just leave it? Or would you take the chance and give Grumpy the anaesthetic? Is there another option? I hasten to add that the cyst doesn't seem to bother him, even when he scratches it and it bleeds. I'm concerned because it just doesn't heal.

And are her dogs sick and dying? If not, pull your head in. Indeed, if so, still pull your head in. I know that some raw feeders are fanatical about it but frankly many dogs do very well on cheap supermarket kibble and Pedigree Pal. It is not cruel, it's what suits the dog. I think thats a bit rude of you. They are purely asking a question not looking for your smarta*** comments.Pul your head in goose. Rude? Rude is insisting that the only way to feed a dog is your way.

Yeah, that would be interesting to research. You could survey pet owners, I guess, and try to see if different types of diet were associated with different types and rates of cancer. You'd have to somehow allow for the fact that people who go to the trouble to raw feed their dogs might conceivably on average take better care of their animals than the average australian does. So if you find a lower rate of cancer in raw fed dogs, that could relate to raw feeders doing other things differently (exercise, housing, medication), and not actually be caused by the raw feeding itself. Correlation doesn't prove causation. You could even find more cancers reported in raw fed dogs, for a couple of reasons: a) if raw feeding helps a dog live longer, then you could easily see more cancers in raw fed dogs, since older dogs tend to get cancer more often than young dogs do. b) if raw feeders are on average more likely to take their dog to the vet than the average dog owner you may also see more cancers diagnosed in raw fed dogs, since dogs that don't go to the vet when they are ill won't be diagnosed with cancer even if they have it. Just thinking out loud here. Surely, this should be 'have to allow for the assumption' rather than 'fact'?

Could be connected to anything. Household chemical use, for example.

The problem with any studies is that what works best for an individual dog may not work for another dog. All my dog did for his diet to no longer work was move states.

Feeding An Oldie. What's Suitable?
Sheridan replied to Gayle.'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Grumpy will try anything once to see if it's edible (including everything that isn't). I only worry about him if he's off his food.
