  1. See the post I made above with the description ... Baiting another dog is not sparring.
  2. It wasn't sparring but recall, Lyndsay, at the Adelaide Royal when Cathy Delmar was pleased when Ruby and her littermate (?? can't remember now) got all boisterous at each other. I think some people believe sparring = fighting and it's not. This description from a westie site best describes it:
  3. Can I just point out that it isn't just oodles that get matted? Any non-shedding dog, and indeed those with pedigrees back to the year dot, can get matted. On the subject of petshops, I grew up knowing about 'dog farms' as they were called then and that pet shops were bad. No education from the parents on the matter; it just seemed kind of obvious to us.
  4. With you on the watermelons. I am not sure what the motive is. Maybe a prefered far far left animal rights group who would like the job, coming to a town in Oz near you soon? Or maybe what he said was true. Not everything is a conspiracy.
  5. yes that is a good idea. let them know that their comments were disgusting! Or message them directly on Twitter.
  6. I thought squeakers could become dangerous if they come outside the toys? Maybe I'll have to encourage him to get interested in food-filled toys instead Yes, they can. As soon as the squeaker is removed, I use bribery to get it away from my dog. I don't leave him unsupervised with toys. Bribery works XD What about when you leave him alone and expect him to entertain himself? Does he have some toys for those times? Absolutely not. I have two dogs and they get along very well but I'd prefer there be no tears. Princess Mini is usually very amenable and gives up toys when Grumpy wants them but I'd rather not take the chance without me there to supervise.

  9. People have to take responsibility for their dogs and not leave it up to the Royal organisers to provide security for them. If you only get one pass then pay for a ticket. I recall one dog at the Canberra Royal a couple of years ago that was left by itself for hours while its handler was elsewhere. The meeting was still going when I left and the dog was just by the toilets, so behind the trees and out of sight of anyone in the rings. It was late so every other exhibitor in that area had left and the public were leaving, too. So easy just to grab the dog and go.
  10. My two (wheaten and kerry respectively) can destroy a cuz toy within a couple of hours. The problem with these is they don't squeak. My dogs aren't interested in things that don't make a noise.
  11. I'm not defensive; I was offended. Yes, I think going to a pet shop is bad but consider that not everyone who gets a dog from a pet shop is clueless and just forks out money for the cute puppy in the window. It's much the same stupid generalisation that says only people who want a show dog will get a pedigree and people dump dogs in pounds because there's something wrong with them. And sure, an Irish terrier is going to be a farm dog with particular traits but my dad did basically look at a wheaten and say, 'I want one.' Dear me, I think he may even have said, 'Ooooh.'
  12. yes but did he just go out and buy one without giving consideration to the temperament, care requirements etc? That was my point Why are you joking now when you weren't before? And no, he didn't. We originally went looking for another kerry blue. Anything beyond picking the breed, he left to me. And before you ask whether I considered it, I asked loads of questions about health and grooming. I never onced asked a question about temperament.
  13. and that exactly shows the mentality of the breeders. If you're outpricing most pedigree recognised dogs with unrecognised crossbreeds obviously your marketing comes before your care for a new breed. What makes an oodle more special then most of the other crosses out there in the pounds - the spin. For one of their multi gen 'breeding' dogs prices I can can get a working line dog that has a use, good pedigree and can go on to contribute to an international gene pool if I so wish it to. clueless peope with big wallets My dad saw his first wheaten and said, 'I want one.' He's neither clueless nor has a big wallet, thanks very much.
  14. Based on looks alone, I suggest that people's views of the poodle look is based on the show cut. I wish I had a picture of Elvis here. Elvis is a standard poodle that used to belt from one side of St Helens Beach in Geelong to another and fling himself off the pier then swim into shore. I knew what poodles looked like but he didn't look like a poodle, simply because of his haircut. I also didn't think that they'd be so energetic. I had to adjust my view of poodles after meeting Elvis. Hell yeah and I feel exactly the same way about the cross breds that people like to refer to as Aussie Bulldogs. The Coolie has been around for a very long time, it served a purpose then and still does today. Of the Irish terrier breeds, the wheaten is generally considered the oldest but wasn't recognised by the IKC until 1937. I have a novel dated the year before called The Kind Companion, which is about a blind man and his dog, named as a wheaten terrier.
  15. Sorry to be a downer but given where he is likely to end up, can I suggest some publicity wouldn't go astray? He's won't need rehab unless he's released from the pound.
  16. How do you know? I used to work for one of the founders. Do you know which breeder it was? PM me if you can.
  17. Hehe, the Wheatens they used could be causing their problems! Lots of breeds have type issues, go to a dog show and look at the GSDs, and that is just (presumably) the ones bred with conformation in mind. There was one Wheaten used that was throwing puppies with undershot jaws. She was only bred from once and then returned to her breeder. How do you know?
  18. I'd stay. I recall watching with horror the film of people in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina not being allowed to take their pets with them. I couldn't live with myself. The problem with dogs fending for themselves is that most of them can't. My two aren't that great at getting their dinner out of the cupboard.
  19. Hehe, the Wheatens they used could be causing their problems! Lots of breeds have type issues, go to a dog show and look at the GSDs, and that is just (presumably) the ones bred with conformation in mind. Bloody wheatens, always in trouble! Precisely. Was there, for instance, originally three different types of schnauzers?
  20. Not soon but I think it will happen eventually. As to in-fighting between breeders, this happens with recognised breeds, too. Yes but it's hardly going to help them create a new breed of dog if they can't agree on how to do it or what to call the bloody thing. Aren't they pretty much agreed that it's called the labradoodle? The only people who seem to object to the name don't have anything to do with the "breed". As to how to create a new breed of dog, aren't some doing multigenerational as per this thread, who are getting type? Mind you, type is as type does, as seen in my own breed.
  21. Of course, the pound process is the correct thing to do. I don't like his chances if he's not reclaimed.
  22. Is the idea for him to be caught and taken to LDH?
