Rare Or Disqualifed Colours In Breeds.
Sheridan replied to poodlefan's topic in General Dog Discussion
It's a "kerry blonde" That is mismarked kerry not a wheaten. In fact, if you look at the wheaten head it's more irish terrier than kerry. I've posted that before along with pictures of black and tan kerries, tri-colour kerries. The irish, wheaten and kerry are closely related, of course. There are a number of mismarked kerries and there's a very good article from Dr Neil O'Sullivan (a geneticist and himself a wheaten breeder) about the genetics of kerries and wheatens (can't find the link). Wheatens are actually genetically sable (hence the brown and black colour they're born with) and only one gene turns them wheaten. It's like having a different dog each month until they're around 18 months to two years. -
There's honesty and then there's being little and mean. There was no need to say anything at all.

Without seeing the dog in person and as a six month old pup, I believe it was, and sitting down to boot. I wouldn't be taking that opinion either.

Since Staffords weren't bred to bring down bulls I am somewhat puzzled by your logic :D There are several written records quoting old time Stafford men stating the best dogs they had seen in the fighting pit were 'pigeon blue' and one of the two dogs on which the original standard was based was a blue fawn. Stafford history isn't my strong suit, obviously. Whatever they were bred for, which by the above seems to be fighting? How do you know?
-
That's what I don't understand. Without the papers and the bragging rights, he's just any other dog to a BYBer. So why take him ? and not just buy a dog to breed with. Maybe the person just wanted to have him ? who knows Perhaps the logic applied was why buy. Indeed, who knows, but papers and bragging rights may not have been important.

Right, so the colour doesn't matter because a blue staffy can be fit for purpose, which begs the question, why are they verboten? Why are they forbidden ? They aren't Yet, you're dead set against them. Verboten for you. What is it about a slate nose that prevents a staffy from taking down a bull? Does blue in a staffy actually increase the risk of health problems or again, is that down to bad breeding from unscrupulous BYBers wanting to cash in on a fad? Is blue in a staffy like white in a boxer that may increase the risk of deafness, for example?

I don't think the comparison is specious, Traciemc, given how often, for example, people here (all of whom love dogs) complain about off lead dogs.
-
The fact that he's a winner and would have no papers doesn't matter to the BYB, surely.

I doubt dogs with excess flesh, flat large feet, straight stifles, dumpy front ends, bulldog fronts, large drop ears, narrow little underjaws, with narrow rows of incissors and short inverted canines, over done or over boned would be fit for purpose and go a round. Are all of the above caused by their colour? You know the answer to that Well, I would have thought the above was caused by bad breeding rather than colour genetics but perhaps you know something I don't. If I am correct, then my question as to whether a blue staffy is incapable of doing the job for which staffordshire bull terriers were bred, remains unanswered.

Grumpy was never afraid of storms until a few years ago when there was a huge storm and the hail was hitting the front windows sideways. Since then he's associated thunder with the sound of the heavy rain. He doesn't seem to take any notice of rain by itself, though. Yesterday, during the storm, he stood there and shook badly and wouldn't settle. He'd be up with me and Mini on the couch for a minute then he'd get down. I cannot distract him with anything. Mini, who never seemed to mind storms previously either (at least, she'd bark at the noise), I think, is picking up on his fear. It's very distressing to watch him. I just talk to him normally during it and otherwise ignore the behaviour but my instincts are to cuddle him. I don't, though, as I don't want to reinforce his fear.

One thing I haven't got from the responses is whether a blue staffy is incapable of doing the job for which staffordshire bull terriers were bred.

Is it a rule that only breeders can have an interest in breed health matters? It's something that's often levelled at me, you see, and I don't understand why it's constantly brought up. I know rather a lot about health issues and the genetics of my breed and yet because I'm not a breeder, apparently I'm not allowed to comment. So what if Bet isn't a breeder? -
I was standing at a counter at a Pet Barn and heard the advice of, 'Change your dog's food over every couple of days because they get bored with it.'

I tend to agree. In fact, there's been more than one or two dogs throughout this thread where I've ummmed about the dog actually carrying the appearance of a cross. Which ones? I think the silver labs but aside from those, I haven't a clue. -
Kinda reminds me of the people who think they have the right to send their kids to school with peanut butter and other nutty foods when there is a clear policy of no nuts. My kids like peanut butter but no way would i endanger someone elses child by letting them take it to school. And yet there have been previous discussions on DOL where people have said that they don't think they should be told what they can and can't put in a kid's lunchbox even if what they put in endangers another kid's life.

Wheaten boy, kerry girl. I love kerry boys, too, of course, but I love the wheaten boys better than wheaten girls so a kerry girl it is.

Blonde kerry blue terrier Black and tan kerries have also shown up but I have heard these were culled (and for Moselle, it was for political reasons - actual politics, not dog politics). -
Ah yes, I'd love a glen. They're the only Irish terrier breed I've not owned. A pair, I think, would be good.

Rufus The Daily Telegraph once used a photo of Rufus (and a show photo at that!) in a photo gallery of 'dangerous dog breeds'. The photo isn't there anymore as I believe the paper was contacted about it. -
