  1. There are studies that show close relatives of a dog that has bloated have a 60% chance of bloating too.Bloat tends to occur in older dogs in alot of cases, but if i had a bitch/dog that bloated young,i would not breed on with it .There is no problem showing it though. My breed is bloat prone too, which is one of the reasons i take several precautions when feeding/travelling and in hot weather.Stress has also been found to be a contributing factor in bloat.
  2. My pups are all raised on chicken without problems, havent had any issues so far. And i am pretty sure the use of hormones in chickens has been banned since the 60's?
  3. Thanks 01kismet, will be able to foster if i can get some more details .
  4. Im glad she's ok,there are some a#%$holes out there-if there were no general public there though, who does that leave?????
  5. I have had pups perfectly fine with me /re trained adults too,but with certain people they can negatively influence the dog into behaviours not seen with different handlers. These people arent rough or nasty, just some signal they give out i think, the dog is just not confident with them. Not saying this is the case though, just something i have observed working at the vets and being their main handler for nervous/timid dogs as they seemed to be more confident with me.I dont pander to them, but neither did i force them to do something before they were comfortable.
  6. Come and watch the pigs being loaded onto the truck next time-1/2 hr of extreme stress, then the journey(here it was only short thank god) but often in 40 degree heat, then unloaded, mixed pigs all fighting with each other, boars and sows in together, then wet down and big tongs shoved in their ears and a big bolt of electricity sent down into the brain. How does that equate to 10 mins before death . Yet people still enjoy their bacon,i do and i used to have to pick which of my boars i was handling was to be sent off that week because they had gotten too big and i used to cry each time-but that is what we do-we eat meat(most of us) But thats humane according to what some vets equate the meaning of animal welfare and a quick death.A bullet would be better.
  7. Sometimes a fearful/nervous dog can be made worse by trying to socialise them too much i have found. But i think temp definately has an inherited component, otherwise we wouldnt be using temp as one of the measures in our breeding programmes along with health.
  8. How did you and Maja go Hunterhound this weekend showing?
  9. Had 1 maiden bitch laprascopic AI'd last year=13 puppies.I have always been told to not use frozen AI on a maiden bitch, but i cant see where it is any different?
  10. Trans cervical is supposed to have a lower success rate for frozen semen-laprascopic AI is best.
  11. Riggggghhht... So everyone here is cool with the concept of a fish being hauled around alive by a hook for 10 minutes when we know that fish feel pain like any other animal with a functioning nervous system? So if someone were to haul around a puppy with a hook in it's mouth for 10 minutes that's fine because hey there are 'real tragedies' out there? I find it odd that people cannot see that something like this is often not about the incident itself but the questioning of the status quo, making people really look at their practices in the light of current knowledge, and to really ask themselves if it is absolutely necessary. This fish was hauled around for 10 minutes on a hook, but it's not just about this fish it's about all fish that feel the hook and struggle against it for longer than is absolutely necessary, and how putting a hook through a wild animal and reeling it in would be considered unacceptable for a land mammal or even a whale and yet it's considered ok for these animals. What's the difference exactly? I find that many people here are too quick to dismiss something as 'whacky, unrealistic animal rights activism' when in fact these are legitimate issues that need to be addressed if people actually care about animal welfare since it encompasses all animals not just puppies and kittens - and it's not just about one fish. So You are a total vegan, right? You dont eat tinned tuna, salmon, sardines, nor do you give them to your dogs i assume? Dying in a net by suffocation is not as stressful,or being snap frozen while alive is ok?
  12. seen ones at op sites if the dog is a bit "active",but at a loss with the other ones.
  13. I still also put my hand out to block the horses(dogs) vision when i am turning-used to always have to do it with flighty yearlings.Hard to break the habit
  14. as much as they are stubborn at times, I have found them relatively easy to put basic obedience on, seeing they are so keen to please. I'm sure you will have him wrapped around your finger in no time. Glad the transfer will be uncomplicated. I take Maja to her first show this weekend...a bit daunting as it is also my first show.... Good luck, i went back to a show for the first time a few weeks ago,and i was so nervous i did the two hands on the lead thing :D Too many years of leading TB'S around on the studs i think! Luckily though the dogs were a dream in the ring,so Maja may behave better than you are thinking she is going to! Our next one is a kennel club show on the 14th,only with Edward though,Leila may go to a few others when i get used to it again.
  15. i have had to rehome 5 (most from the big litter and the other girls). Most of these people traveled from out of state twice to see their pup -so i thought i was on the right track. One was donated as a potential search dog on anothers recommendation. I had 4 at pretty much the same age all come back ,then i get a phone call to say another owner had their work hours cut,so they needed full price back for the dog immediately and to arrange transport for him back to me That is the only one i have been unable to help as i was extremely stretched financially already-but i do know where he is now,and if they didnt ask me to pay for him and transport,he would have come straight back. Now i would offer to foster for a while instead till they get sorted, owners have to take some responsibility for the dog and the choices they make.I know people can and do end up in a bad situation overnight(been there before) so i do understand and will do whatever i can if its a genuine problem. If one is in the pound though(only happened once thank god) i will do whatever i have to to get them out.
  16. He finally laid down today, normally he just runs and runs around all day.Dug a hole near the gate into the house on the verhanda and has made that "his spot". He has no manners whatsoever, and i mean none,bu t he is very eager to please,so i dont think it will take long.
  17. yes,he is on main, always was as the guy was going to do SAR apparently. He is being transferred straight into my name.
  18. Here is a pic from 18 mths ago
  19. Here are some pics -he doesnt look to bad from the side shot and its hard to get the righ tangle to show how light he really is. And yes,his teeth will be looked at when he gets hip/elbows done ,not going to put him under 2 lots of anaesthetic if i can avoid it.
  20. Cant go tomorrow now, have to go to tafe as i missed it on wednesday to take one of the kids to a specialist-Bloody kids!!!! Was hoping to meet you Poodlefan, next time, hope you have a great day tomorrow
  21. Actually i do add uncooked rolled oats and LSA(linseed, sunflower, almond meal) you can buy it in the healthfood section.Oats are for b vitamins as they are a high source.
  22. What is he currently eating? Mine are all on adult from 8 weeks+ raw. A whole orange squeezed including the membranes etc over the food is what i do once or twice a week,bu ti f he is fussy that wont help. Have they tried cat food-a spoonful mixed in his feed might help him eat more biscuits, something like tuna or sardines etc.
  23. I too want my dogs to come back, but i am sorry-too many owners now when the slightest hiccup happens-get rid of the dog. For some people ANY effort/adjustment is too much and that is when i do get the %$#ts.Genuine circumstances are different.I would never openly critisice the owner though-the main thing is to get the dog back safe.
  24. Coprice working dog for both pups after 8 weeks and adults-best dry i have used.Used to use Bonnie bu t the end results wern't pleasant!
  25. I dont do any formal obedience, dog school training-nor do i ever wish too.My dogs are extremely well socialised and responsive to me,that is all i want.I for one wont be going to any set training where that type of training may not suit my dogs.A big ,burly bloodhound entire male does not always respond to ignoring bad behaviour in the hope it goes away/purely positive approach .
