My dogs too, with the exception of the desexed bitch, all looked horrible on total barf feeding, and required a huge amount to maintain weight,so no savings here-my food bill tripled.Thats why they have 1/2 raw 1/2 dry(and a cheap one at that ) i also know many farm dogs that lived until their teens, most had never required a vet, lived in 44's and where fed only on PAL dry-so how can you say there must have been long term affects? Some dogs do better on raw, some dont, some do better on some brands, than others-they are individuals and should be fed accordingly.

Dont Say No To Your Dog?

The Delta trainer in this area won't deal with dogs that show any aggression (dog or human). She sends them to another (non-Delta) trainer. ETA By 'this area' I mean my area. I was talking to one of the people I do agility with, who is doing the Delta instructor's course. They are actually told not to deal with dogs that have any behavioural problems, but to refer them to a veterinary behaviourist. They are not taught how to deal with problem dogs at all. The lady I talked to was frustrated at this. This pup wasnt aggressive AT ALL until after several weeks of having his food taken away constantly on the trainers advice .Exuberant, yes, aggressive,no way. -
Congratulations-i love seeing hounds win!! And Greyhounds are such sweet dogs.

Dont Say No To Your Dog?

One of my puppy owners ,against my advice, took her pup to a delta class. He was a huge ,boisterous pup, very food driven. It was them that told her to walk him in a harness so he wouldnt pull-riiiiiight,thats why we use a harness on them trailing,so they pull us????? He pulled her over several times in his harness, but she had to get up,and reward him for it? Next they told her to take his food away EVERY meal,,no swapping for something better, sometimes a couple of times-end result was extreme food guarding by 14 weeks old.And dont get me started on the jumping up,which had to be politely ignored or rewarded when he sat-so then he would launch at you ,and sit for his reward. He came back to me at 16 weeks old as she was desperate-i had him walking on a loose lead in 10 mins, because he only needed one good correction to learn the boundaries for that.I used TOT ,with feeding etc,and i told her to NEVER take a dogs food away again ever(unless she really needed too,but always have something better as his reward) As far as the jumping, well he only did it once(boss grip on the muzzle and the ah ah).Once he learnt my boundaries,he settled amazingly fast, and i was able to incorporate more positive methods. They were amazed at the difference after being at my place for 10 days-he was happy because he now knew what was acceptable, and what wasnt. I also had, have 2 bloodhounds that never needed any correcting other than tone of voice/facial expression-they would be devastated if i said ah,ah to them, but then have 2 males that are more headstrong, they get a combination of training methods to suit their personalities. Purely positive is not suitable for all breeds/individual dogs, and i think that where a good trainer is invaluable-knowing how to approach training for that dog. I sometimes look at all the snotty little out of control kids you see running around, the results of only positive re-inforcement methods, and cant help but wonder if the same happens with our dogs sometimes. -
She might be having a psuedo-pregnancy.

2 of my girls just give me the "youve GOT to be kidding" look if there walk is uphill,or any longer than 20 mins-they are more comfortable laying on the lounge ,or the furniture on the back verhanda. Not all dogs like a 1-2 hr walk(or 10 kms at a brisk pace). These 2 dont even sniff around when we walk. 2 of the others, though, are quite happy to do a 5-6 walk, and sniff every blade of grass-ALL dogs are different, and blanket laws saying all dogs must be walked for x time per day are ridiculous.I know MY dogs,i know what motivates them, what stimulates them, and what they need as individual dogs. As far as limited register restricting the breed-i have taken a chance with a few of mine on main because they wanted to show-none are in the ring ,one was shown once i think several years ago,and every enquiry i seemed to get for a while just wanted to byb, crossbreed. So i pay to desex all of mine at 8 mths, this is working well at the moment. There are 4 breeders/owners i am helping,so its not like i want to keep dogs all in my greedy clutches,bu t with the current trend of breeding to make money back,go on a holiday,re carpet the house etc ,is it any wonder breeders dont want to sell to joe blow a good dog on main? I dont blame most breeders at all-the general public has made breeders take the measures they do today, although some do go a bit over the top.Thats easy,if you dont like it-buy from another one! As far as that "seminar" goes regarding speakers whinging that breeders wont sell them top quality main registered dogs to cross breed to improve their stock, you have to be kidding right???? I would rather put to sleep all of mine before i would sell to deliberate crossbreeding puppyfarmers. They are not going to continue your lines and be a useful way of increasing the gene pool as the progeny will be CROSSBRED.

Just like to add,the bloodhound bitch i was importing(the first one, not the replacement one!) died of bloat 6 weeks prior to flying out at 10 mths old. There is bloat in the line on the sires side i found out later. Also my vet advised me against gastropexy as a prophylactic measure as she had had to repair 4 done by other vets when the dogs had re-bloated.She said they were a mess when she opened them up,so whether it was inexperience on the performing vets part,or the old fashioned way instead of the new one,i dont know. If she did have to do one,it was always double stitched.

WTF????? Did your friends pay for this dog?The breeder should take the dog back and rehome at there cost if showing aggressive tendancies to a child. If it was one of mine, and a behavioural assesment showed it was definately the dog(and not the environment)i wouldnt hesitate to pts if necessary,it most certainly wouldnt be passed on and it would be desexed immediately.

But to some there is no distinction Anne,if you have more than 2 dogs you cant give them what they need apparently. Funny, but i find in my breed, they are happier in a "pack".

There is a breed of meat chick that will get to over 3 kgs at 16 weeks.I bought some years ago and dressed out at 3.2 kgs at 24 weeks(not under lights or cage bound) so slower growth. They are selectively bred, but ours had lots of bone abnormalities from the weight/growth so i never got them again. Also crap layers as i tried to produce some of the better conformed ones,bu tno luck. There is no hormones used ,and hasnt been for more than 20 years-AB'S yes,and that is tightly regulated and inspected.Companies face huge fines if the meat tests positive to even antibiotics at time of kill-yes i do know that fo ra fact, the paperwork involved in medications for intensive piggeries is unbelievable, and is regularly audited.

I dont wish to be on the side where anyone with more than 2 dogs is a puppy farmer ,thanks . So i feel justified in defending my position ,i dont see it as attacking people. Before they tell everyone that breeders should be restricted in everything, like we are not already, perhaps they should make a more informed decision and go and meet some of these breeders, then go and see a real puppy farm. Then see if there is a difference in perception of the word "puppy farmer". And if breeders of numerically small breeds were to only have 1 breeding bitch and only breed every couple of years-how will people buy one eventually-there will be none, they will die out .Or you can go on a 5+ years waiting list, which i wont even do. Without good, registered breeders where will people access there dogs in years to come?

I dont need to spend every waking minute of my time with my dogs-does this make me a shonky breeder? .I do not want to have them live inside with me either.they come in for visits-my own belief(and i know i will get severely beaten for this ), is that the rise in dog behaviour problems stems from dogs being treated like children-they are not.My dogs are treated as a pack, with me at the top,and if it means order is kept by not having them take over the house-that is for me to decide.I have lost count of the people who have seen my dogs (some of them breeders of other breeds) who are amazed that they all run together, this includes new dogs and when the girls are in season.ALL WITHOUT PROBLEMS. How else can i run 2 entire males, females and pups together IF THEY THINK THEY ALL HAVE AN EQUAL PLACE? My dogs are happy dogs, they have their own kennel at night, and that is the only time they are kennelled(and it is to minimise bloat),my 2 girls are on the verhanda at night. They all get extensively socialised,1 is training for SAR,one is being shown and will do SAR later.Ask any of my puppy buyers ,one of which is a DOLER,about my pups and how much time and effort goes in to each one,and that is working part time,4 kids as well. Maybe some people on here need to go and see a few breeders and their dogs personally, before they go telling experienced people how many dogs they should have, can handle, how much time they should spend etc. I have seen people who cant handle 1 dog,or neglect one dog,i have one here at the moment-and i can guarantee he is happier here than he would ever have been before, despite him being one of 6.

I tried supercoat on my litter in 2008,they did well on it,but lots of end product,so back to coprice for me as the dry portion of their diet. I did try mine on a total raw diet and they looked like shit and had to feed a huge amount to keep weight on them,so i have a compromise with the 1 700gm tin a day o f coprice and the rest is a raw mix.Works for me. And yes,i know, coprice is crap too apparently, but when i see a dog of mine raised on science diet, and looks no better than one of my coprice dogs,i cant justify the price difference.

I wish i could give up-i would have enough to buy a house now instead of renting.I have had to have 2 c-sections done-1 bitch had 18 and the last 8 were becoming stressed.I did have the option of doing nothing and just putting her on high dose AB'S and syntocin ,they would have oozed out eventually as the vet put it.But i did the right thing by the bitch and had her done and desexed on the table. Bitch 2-one litter normally no complications, next(last litter) 4 pups then a massive dead walrus baby blocking the horn,so c -section and desexed. So if this was the case,i am just unlucky and should give up,or the dogs are unworthy of being bred?Which is it?
-
I am going to wait to watch it until all my teenage kids are home-Payback I say!!!!!!

I have never had to have a C-section. Thankfully. One litter of two pups are just one of those things. It happens to the best of kennels. Not everyone has a champion bitch to start off with. Many a breeder starts off with an average or better than average bitch. The possible champion material ones are generally kept by the breeder. It is what you do after that. The aim is to improve. If you improve then there is a chance. It may have taken two generations on one line to get something that is now at least showing promise and to competitive in the ring. Everyone had to start somewhere. Even the big name kennels. :D Couldnt have said it better myself. I kept the 2 best pups from the two litters to run on,these are the best i have bred, and it is the second generation from that line. I made a small profit of $2000 all up-this went back into a new stud, and then i will have 4 dogs to hip/elbow and cardiac test this year-total of $2500 just there. I get so sick of people thinking because your bitch had 12 pups, you are rolling in it-I cant even begin to outline my costs this year,if someone makes a profit-bloody good on them,it probably makes up for the other litters that dont for whatever reason. I have 6 dogs now,1 male being trained for SAR,1 retired bitch, another pet bitch, the new stud male,my girl that i have had 1 litter from and Edward ,her pup that i am showing. They all get socialised, played with ,excercised, inside time. Some people cant handle 1,i can handle 6 +work+4 kids,it is called TIME MANAGEMENT AND BEING ORGANISED.

Thats what i use, cattle ones as the girls are quite 'big",as as my boys say-could drive a truck through there Never thought about an ET tube, will scab one off my vets!
-
i collect my own,its pretty easy, but i have found a lot of vets dont have the faintest clue. I use a pipette/syringe as the pipette has a rounded end-i dont use an insertion tube like some vets,i use 2 fingers and slide the pipette under and in the groove the two fingers make. I wont go into any more detail!!!!!! ETS- they actually have that on Youtube

Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!

would be 15 yrs ago now,i didnt think to question them at the time, they just said she needed this. Each incision was about 1 cm approximately, she had been on elimination diet prior to this,i think-long time ago now .The pic you showed looked nothing like what she had, they were definate incisions,,because i was the one who took the stitches out! -
Post 18 i think it is-only interested as it does seem high fo relbows, not assuming decent breeders will breed with that though, may be just the way it was worded or i took it the wrong way!

Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!

So if the tests she had were not reliable, why the hell did they do them? Waste of $1000 + and she may have had an allergy to something that could have been managed????? i know that allergies cant be cured-my daughter has developed coeliac disease at the age of 13,the slightest amount she has a reaction now which is becoming worse. -

I didn't know Intradermal did food allergic responses? Well,i assume it was intra dermal-she had biopsies taken from 12 places and that is what they told us??????She had 1 stitch in each place. -
Thanks, that would be great to know your suggestions. I have Rockports which are great but have only ever found lace up shoes that give me the support in the soles that I require. And I wear runners that are professionally fitted and cost a lot. I don't wear runners all the time as I manage ok wearing regular shoes when I don't have to run in them . Only find I get sore when I am required to jog/run or if I'm walking a long way. I have the same problem with shin splints, also have a badly set and fused broken big toe joint on one side, and a ankle that is still wobbly after 2 3rd degree sprains to the ankle ligaments on the other!!!! The reason i couldnt pass the medical for the police force I have tried heaps of orthotics and ortho shoes, and still find certain joggers are the best.Colorados are good too,bu tcan be heavy to run in.

Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!
centitout replied to Crazy Daisy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I know how frustrating dogs with allergies can be,years ago my ex husband bought me a husky/german shepard pup. She started scratching at 4 mths,by 6 her skin was badly thickened and smelly. She was on AB'S,cortisone, elimination diets. After 3 mths on rice, small amount of vegies and a maximum of 500 g of lamb mince a week, her skin cleared up marginally. She had the derm route-$1000 in intra dermal testing +all the other visits etc-came back allergic to ALL meat protein and most vegetable as well. The only relief she got was high dose cortisone,so when she started refusing the rice diet she was on,i had her euthanased at the age of 13 mths. Not fair to the dog,and at that stage they didnt have the prescription diets they do now. -
Allergy - My Poor Dog Is Getting Really Cranky!

Says who? Exactly. Never heard this and I've listened to 4 different Dermatologists speak on food allergies. Agree with Zayder - the storage mites are problem. its probably the fact that a lot of humans are allergic, sensitive to food colourings/preservatives,so would be a natural assumption that dogs are too.My aunt, after 3 years of developing extreme hives 2-3 times aweek, having been to numerous doctors/allergy specialists/testing-found she is allergic to yellow food colouring-and it was in 1/2 the stuff she ate.I have a friend who is allergic to certain preservatives as well, and that took years to diagnose. Kids that are ADHD etc often re act to certain foods, and doctors will tell you to avoid those. I broke out in severe psoriasis 3 years ago after a sore throat-was put on cortisone creams, coal tar creams, cortisone tablets-the works.Specialist said deal with it-nothing you can do except keep on with the cortisone you will have it for life . 9 mths i suffered with it,finally went to a naturapath(sort of thought they were all quacks) he took one look at me and said i had a crap diet full of chemicals and preservatives and that my body was overloaded. Went organic for 3 weeks, took extra oils(9 capsules a day)stopped the cortisone, creams etc, used a stocking with rolled oats in it to clean, and the psoriasis went by the end of the 3rd week, never been back. All you have to do is take a look at your shampoo bottle to see how many chemicals are in it-then add up all the product you use/eat in a day to see how many chemicals and preservatives are involved. No wonder that allergies in both humans/dogs and horses are on the rise.
