When i handraised those 6 from that litter of 18,i syringe fed .They started off on di-vetelact-started to go backwards-so they were put on Pal puppy milk/active yogurt/egg yolk and never looked back after that. I havent had any luck with di-vetelact in the past ,even for hand raising kittens,they just dont seem to do that great. Regarding the pain,poo-sounds like an infection to me-as well as AB'S,try putting them on hot water bottles too-hot packs seem to soothe them more than just the actual room temp being warm.If you are worried about dehydration ,give them lectade alternatively with milk feeds. Protexin is a probiotic-to encourage good bacteria in the gut,AB'S kill all bacteria,so it is normally used when the AB'S are finished.

1 of mine wasnt under a GA to do XRAYS for elbows only(wasnt for scoring though) he was lightly sedated-the rest have all been done together under GA.

Would he be the male that a certain breeder sold as one line and it turned out to be a non papered dog from victoria? That dog has been rehomed several times(at least 3 that i know of) if it is that one(red/black muzzle) I cant help ,as i am facing having to rehome mine as the owner of the place i rent has put it on the market,and you cannot rent a place with 6 dogs,let alone huge ones.It took me months to find this one as it was and was supposed to be a long term rental.I am trying everything in my power to stay,even offered to go into $400000 debt to try to buy it,but cant get the loan for that amount. I also have my SAR trained boy coming back from his handler in sydney ,as he is going o/s-never rains but it pours.

This is definitely something that they are doing in the US and it is a DNA test, so I would assume they are looking for specific identified markers ...I do not think there has been any recorded cases here in OZ (Baylord may be able to add to this but I have never heard it discussed). Seeing my girl is imported, I want to ensure that she is as healthy as possible and not going to introduce anything sinister. I haven't heard of any problems from her lines but it will give me peace of mind if I have the test done. I did see a banner on DOL (I think) that advertised DM testing - a kit can be sent to you & then you can send it away. Personally I think I will talk to a vet/specialist and see what they say. Good luck with the semen importation. You do need to be a little careful from Europe as many breeders DO NOT health test OR they are breeding with health scored hounds that are well in excess of the breed mean score....I think they feel that just as long as you have a score that you can still proceed to breed, regardless of the figure. I do know of one breeder who is breeding with a bitch who has a hip score of 25 and feels that this is quite acceptable!!! I contacted Dr Wyburn a little while back & asked him about what would be considered acceptable for our breed (I actually had to pay him for this info...!!). He mentioned that the BH mean score here in Australia is approx 16 - 18. He therefore said that no one hip should score more than half of the mean average score, i.e. 8 - 9, and then you would be hesitant as you should be selecting bitches that are well below the mean score...otherwise you are perpetuating poor hips. Elbows are the same....0/0 - 1/1 are acceptable above that you should only breed to a hound with a 0/0 score!! Elbows i wouldnt breed with at all if higher than 1,whether it was to a o:o stud or not!! ED is a worry over there,as is epilepsy,but only one kennel over there has mentioned it-it is on there website,trying to wade through the pedigrees is the hard part . Thats why i am trying to get multiple pups from a litter scored,have already arranged to have a couple of pet pups done from these litters last year when they are old enough, so i can get a better indication of hip/elbow health-both parents were 0:0 though for elbows,and below the average for hips. I also cant believe you had to pay for the info on hips/elbows I got told that when i had my first one done through Veterinary Imaging(AVA) for free!!!!!

sorry,but the goat owner was well within his rights,but then you get the OH,THEY WOULD NEVER DO THAT,AND IF THEY DID THEY ONLY WANTED TO PLAY Why is it up to the owner of the mauled stock to find out where they live,me it would be shoot first,find out later too,especially if not the first time.

Is DM considered a problem in hounds here? I havent heard of it here,it seems a bit more common in the states etc.I have been researching European breeders as i want to import semen next year(all going to plan) but am finding "probelms" in the lines i liked,so it is back to finding different lines again! With the testing for DM- is it a breed specific test,developed for bloodhounds,or can any breed/dog be tested with a universal test? Just interested for future consideration for health testing.

I think elbows in a lot of breeds are more of a worry than hips,especially giant/large breeds. The vet is the idiot-the owner did tell him that he needed them done for breeding according to the OP.

Wow-$750 sounds steep.Maybe ask in the breeders thread,someone may get them done cheaper than that.I am staying with the Australian/UK system for now-the Pennhip seems complicated,but i have only briefly looked at it. I will be getting Leila ultrasound heart tested this year,then the others gradually-$350 isnt a bad price,depends on whether i end up buying this house as to how many i can test this year as i also have 3 to hip/elbow score in the next 3 or 4 mths.

Hi Michelle-he looks better,but trying to get the weight on is hard-he has been so long at that low weight,i seriously doubt if i can get it on him again.He was going to be hip /elbow scored and his teeth looked at,bu tthe vets want more weight on him first before he goes under anaesthetic. Yes,the girl arrived and has been out of quarantine for a while,they are just having problems transferring everything in to the australian registry at the moment-but i think that is nearly sorted too.Havent really got any info on her,they are going to take some pics shortly and send them. How is your girl going with the trailing? The SES unit here is chomping at the bit for me to re-start Dyson,but i doubt if i will have the time at present with the kids work schedules,and i am working nights and doing tafe as well.Will try to get going once the danger of snakes has passed-there are heaps of them up here due to the orchards.

Hi Staranais, if you watch a bloodhound work,you will notice that they only drop their head every 10 strides or so,totally different to what i've seen with some of the other breeds that keep closer to the trail. The oldest urban trail i have done is in the middle of Forbes,so heavy contamination,started in the carpark,2 road crossings ,through an arcade(2 changes of direction) and about 900 mts all up-in under 10 mins.I had 2 other people walk the trail with the "victim" the 72 hrs prior,and was witnessed by 2 of my SES mates there. The oldest bush trail i did was with one of the kids,and that was nearly 5 days old over 2 kms,he also smothered himself with aeroguard at the drop off point.Going from the cold trail to the hot trail at the end confused him for around 5 mins,he repeatedly circled the area where the victim was let out of the car to go to his hiding spot-turned out he decided to hide up a tree,covered in aeroguard and under a blanket!! Also did a fast 2 km trail(1/2 hr old) with the victim on a bike all the way. He also trailed a thong from one of the kids who lost his thong going across the flooded culvert i had sent him through,i wondered why the dog insisted i do a right turn in the middle of this crossing,which was around 20 ft across,but that was a hot trail of only 15 mins and i didnt know about Ryan losing his thong till i found him! I was just getting back into the training when he developed cancer and was pts,i think with an experienced trainer he would have been awesome,i just stumbled along!!! How do your dogs go with highway crossings etc,do you do all your training in bush,or do you train for urban as well? Baylord also do trailing,and Craig Murray in QLD had 2 hounds that were used sucessfully on searches after the other ES avenues etc failed to find them.The argument i have heard for not using them is that they cant be trained to be a multi purpose dog in the police force,they are specialist trailers. I also did one 24 hr trail in forbes-the bloke laid it for me from the pub when he left,3 road crossings and 3 changes of direction,and he was found easily at the taxi rank sitting in the taxi,this after there had been a torrential downpour that morning.He trailed along the bricks of the buildings at his nose height,he only put his head on the ground twice over that 800 or so mtrs.Hope his son i s as good,but we are only just really getting back into it again now,work and kids makes it hard to fit in the time required for this.

Another reason why i would never move there-but i think people had better brace themselves for the other states to soon follow,and other breeds to be added.This is just a stepping stone .

I start my trailing dogs off with food,and every now and again i 'Jackpot them" to keep them motivated.None of mine have been play driven except for the one in Sydney with another trainer,and his reward is his tennis ball. When they associate the "victim" with the food/praise reward,i start to use more basic food rewards like dried liver etc,and at the end when they are back at the car-they get their ultimate-a chicken frame,roo tail etc,bu ti still jackpot them occaisionally to keep them motivated. I want my dogs to be motivated,enthusiastic and food seems to do that-you cant have a half arsed search dog. Most of our trailing dogs are started with food on the track & a bite or tug at the end, then for most dogs the food is ultimately faded until it's just random drops (or gone altogether). They toy reward always remains, however. This is how the police dog trainers who train with us also start their dogs trailing. Ultimately, it's just like a hunt, the dogs are working in prey drive, the only difference is that they get to bite a toy or sleeve instead of a live animal at the end of the trail. We don't have any blood hounds though, mostly border collies and german shepherds, so I wonder if our dogs are just naturally more play/prey driven than yours? No point using a toy reward if the dog just isn't into it. Our airscent dogs are almost all rewarded with a toy upon finding the victim, but I did hide for one a few years ago who worked exclusively for food (yes, it was a Labrador!) I dont do food drops like footstep tracking,(well,that was one way i was told to do it from a GSD trainer)as i trail mine-totally different style for the hounds!!! They follow the scent particles shed by the skin,and will move up to 40 or so feet from the trail depending on wind,rain etc wherever the scent particles get deposited-they also air scent a lot,particularly when closing in on the victim. Food works best with my guys,and a lot of praise,sometimes a toy at the end,but most times they just sit there with a pained look on their face as i jump around and try to get them to play with a toy,ball etc!They sort of look embarrased. Would be interesting to learn about tracking and the training methods for it,the other problem we have is that now ES wants all SAR dogs to be able to do obedience off lead,where i want the dog to be basically responsive to me,but use his own initiative to keep on the trail.They are not like Border Collies,GSD,GSP ,Labs ,they are wilful and stubborn,and this is what has made them far above other breeds for cold trailing ability,and is something i dont want lost .

I had a sebaceaous cyst right on my throat-kids called it my second head It never caused a problem until i scratched it one night,got infected and blew up to the size of a pea,bloody painful.Had to go on a course of antibiotics and cortisone cream but then it just seemed to disappear after that and i'd had it for 2 years. I normally use ti-tree oil or paw paw ointment on the dogs cuts,scrapes lumps.

An update on Hudson. he has been here for around 5 weeks now,and has settled in beautifully-he has the most lovable temperament. He has been taught to walk "nicely" and gets very excited when he sees the lead come out His topline is filling out,and his hips arent quite so prominent-looks better in the pics unfortunately,so hard to see how he has progressed.Still quite underweight,but he is getting there

You can regularly adopt these chookies as well - tho it appears they turn up almost naked of feathers...so i'll take the time and set up my pen and then keep an eye out for some 'retired' ex battery hens to take over the yard after the main bit of winter is over. As long as the GSD's don't realise the chooks are covered meaty frames on legs we'll all be fine! You go, girl. I've had expensive POL pullets, all very nice, laid lots, but it feels good to save someone's life, and they certainly know how to repay. Ask around produce agencies, or phone up one of the battery places, they often know. Ours came from about 40k away, $1 each!! The odd one dies but most are ok. Probably cost more now. At one of the local sales they have here once a month,a whole cage of 25,went for 20 cents each.And they didnt look too bad,you might have lost one or two,bu t a pretty good investment!

I have just started researching breeds for my 13 yr old daughter to show,and have always loved these guys! I love my hounds,but only one is allowed inside as the others are real food/clothes thieves Anyone have any suggestions on reputable breeders,we will be looking to definately show and would prefer a female as i already have 2 entire male hounds,and a terrier male may not be so great in the mix. And will definately be an inside dog.
