I pay for all my pet puppies to be desexed, but just got a cert back from one that was desexed at 6 mths-and it is $585 for a simple female spey The most i have paid for an adult bitch was $310-i absolutely will not pay that .Does anyone else think that is a little high? I calculate mine on the average of 3 different vets ,so max of $300 at the most.

If the check works to the dogs threshold then it doesnt matter the size. I see small dogs take a correction that would be more then enough for a dog 3 times their size. This is where you have to have the knowledge of equipment and dog behavior to know what equipment is right for the dog. you can take a week of constant training or you can do it within a couple of hours. I know what I prefer. I had a big strong bloodhound male years ago that pulled extremely hard, spent a year trying the purely positive only. Then i had my SAR trainer show me how to correct him properly-it was hard and fast and left the dog in no doubt as to what the boundaries where-he was walking on a loose lead in 10 mins and when he did go to pull,a simple uh,uh was all that was required for him to not pull. All of my pups are taught to walk with the stop if you pull way,but it doesnt always work with big adults that have had 4 years + of doing it there way.I would rather the dog learn quickly, and be able to go for a walk, than sit in the backyard forever/pts etc because someone doesnt want to stress it fo r 10 mins by corrections delivered properly. All methods have there place,a good trainer will know when to apply them. -
Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis

Maybe we offer our opinion because we have years(and some have LOTS of years experience with dogs)and some of us have worked as vet nurses or other occupations where we have picked up a fair whack of knowledge. Most of us breeders also spend countless hours/days /weeks/years researching everything we can that pertains to dogs, and how to keep them happy and safe,we annoy our poor long suffering vets, chiros even dog food people to allow us to make informed decisions where we know the pros and cons. Its good that it worked in your case, i would want to see stats though that shows these dogs would have developed severe dysplasia if not done,if that cant be shown-how can they say what a fantastic procedure it is? A dog can have radiographic signs that say they have a very high hip score-but never show clinical symptoms and are sound for their entire lives-thats why most of us have questioned the necessity of the op. -
It does have drawbacks though for large/giant breeds-there are several threads on it,but at the moment they outweight the risks, and after seeing that dog ,well,it is something that will be done. i dont know how people can sell a dog and not care what happens to it-my last litter i have just had 5 people desex theres-ALL in the same week with more being done soon.I tried offering a rebate of $100,wasnt enough, offer to pay full cost and that seems to have done the trick!

Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis- Hip Dysplasia
centitout replied to baker_girl's topic in Breeders Community
All of mine would be looked at as having hip dysplasia then too-18 weeks old they move like they have a pole up their $#se I have heard though that some vets advocate this op as a prophylactic measure, and that is shameful.I too would let him grow and look at a good chiro first, then assess when he has finished growing. -
Sad thing was, there was bloke wanting to take him apparently-he has one of my girls on co-ownership(i still have her papers though) bu t "disappeared" 18 mths ago and i think thats where the litter that was advertised last year around that way has come from This boy was undesexed-gee i wonder why he wanted him,but after speaking to the pound keeper,he said he would refuse to send the dog to him. PM me if you want his name,so he doesnt try the same thing. Courtesy of the pound keeper,i now have this*&%$holes phone number-he actually had a friend that is a member here. So that is why any future pet girls will be desexed prior to leaving-yes i know the cons of early desexing, but even when i offer full price of desexing back, some still think they can make more by breeding. And mine arent the only ones i have heard of unfortunately over the years.

I have just come back from the vets, and sadly the decision was made to send Spanner over the bridge. He did the same as yesterday,he was ok in the car,but when i opened it up to take him out,he got quite aggro with the vet just looking at him,not even touching him,and he was so fearful he had a few meaningful snaps. His hips were shocking,we didnt end up x raying, palpation and manipulation was enough to confirm,he also had a palpable mass in his abdomen. That combined with the demodex/staph is just too much for a dog to have to put up with and could partly account for his aggressive behaviour-but i would never have been able to rehome him with a clear conscience even if yo ucould find someone to deal with the health issues. Just wish they would have had a proper look before everyone invested time and money into bringing him here, but at least he had a pat and a hug and kind words to help him go,he did wag his tail a few times as if apologing for being the way he is before he went. happy trailing Spanner

Family Pet Dogue De Bordeauxs Stolen And Killed
centitout replied to HollyMilo's topic in In The News
If it were my dogs, who ever did it should hope that i never found them. -
Thanks Beauie, i thought Hudson was bad,but this dog is so bad, just the infection he has from the untreated demodex is extreme, and yes,h e has to be in pain,i can understand that it may cause him to be aggressive. But i too will not tolerate aggression-i think this poor guy has been abused+in pain, something i cannot risk,so i know i will make the right decision if i need too. He is not in a rehomeable state-it will cost a fortune for the mange/AB treatment alone,he had trouble walking properly. I had to put down a rescue hound from really good breeding years ago, because she was so food aggressive, the people had been feeding her from the end of a broom, and i didnt move fast enough one day-sheer fright gave me the strength to keep her off me-she was pts 1/2 hr later, but any other time she was the sweetest dog. If i do have to make that call today,i just hope everyone understands, and he will have at least one night with some affection shown to him.
-
Hudson is doing well, still slow gaining weight, but you need to put it back on slowly anyway, same with starved horses. He absolutely loves going for a walk, and at feeding time i have never seen a hound do the zoomies so much as an adult-it is really rather undignified-he does full 360 spins He has an amazing temperament. And no,pound never said a word about that poor hounds condition, just that he had a sooky temperament,so to say i was a bit distressed when i saw him is an understatement. Will know the full extent of his problems tomorrow. And thank you Onsntilloflash for your huge effort to get him to Mudgee,i think both of us did an 8 hr round trip today.

Just got back from mudgee where i picked up the boy from scone. He had a good go when i went to pick up his lead, and managed to get a finger :D ,he has severe generalised demodex mange and associated bacterial staph infection over entire body .Ear canals are completely blocked on one side, both heavy yeast infections. His legs are so bad with demodex they are bald and extremely wrinkled-looks like elephant skin. Extremely poor hind end, hips will be getting x rayed tomorrow, but at this stage looks to be advanced arthritis/HD. He is ok with other dogs, but showed aggression with other people-so at this stage his future is doubtful, medical issues aside, the aggression is what is worrying. Will let everyone know tomorrow after he gets the complete vet check up.He would have been a stunning dog, full blanket black, and even bigger than the big liver/tan boy i had-obviously has some good bloodlines somewhere,as most of the "purebred" bloodhounds i have seen from that way are skinny, cross types.I just dont know how people can treat them like this
-
I had one emailing for several weeks, asked heaps of questions, then asked me if i could "give him one for free, for the good of the breed". Because he didnt have any money to buy one,but it would be assured a good home :eek:I asked about rescues,he wasnt interested, and oh,had to be UNDESEXED!!!.

I'm on there too if you want to add me-its under my real name though!

My vets are against prophylactic gastropexy UNLESS there is a strong family history. One has had to repair a few done by other vets when the dogs rebloated at a later stage and it was a real mess. i wont do it as a preventitive, and i have a breed prone to it,i lost my first one to it.I think alot has to do with what they are fed,and how,but that view could change as my guys get older and i keep track of any incidences. It generally occurs in older dogs, and the study i read found that leaner dogs surprisingly were more at risk than older ,"chunkier" types.

try the stuff you paint on kids fingernails who chew them, just dont put it too close to the stitches-yo ucan get it from the chemist

And thats exactly why a bit of paper telling me someone is a dog trainer means diddly to me,anyone can go do a course and be one-doesnt mean they are any good at it! Some very good trainers are out there that dont have certification, and i would rather get recommendations off here than blindly accept a bit of paper. Not quite sure, but i think to take a dog into hospitals/nursing homes etc thet have to be delta approved these days-can anyone clarify that for me? -
Neocort is the name of the cream i had to use on one as he had a reaction to the iodine and it drove him nuts-that may help!
-
is there something you can spray on there to stop him licking it.I think its just a bloke thing-they are licking them in the vain hope if they do it enough, they will magically come back! None of the girls ever had a problem, only the bloody boys
-
Mine are all sent to the AVA-3 vets look at them, and i got all of mine back in 3 weeks.
-
OK, would that really be environmental or a secondary complication of another condition? It can develop as a result of untreated eye infections/conjunctivitis as an adult. If apparent as a pup(and you can normally tell by 8 weeks,or at least ones that may be borderline) then yes,it is genetic .As far as i know,it is a dominant gene and only requires one parent with it to pass it on ?
-
You cant show a dog after 6 mths without both testicles fully decended into the scrotum.Someone was seen pulling there dogs down manually and holding in place while the judge was going over the front the other day, they are well known for doing it apparently and good on the judge-dog was nil awarded What about small claims-only costs $100 i think, but sure as hell sounds completely dodgy.Does your friend have any emails etc that could be used to stregthen her position?
-
If the pup has demodex, then yes, they should pay for the treatment for that-thats exactly why i pulled out of importing a bitch when i found out 6 weeks prior to flying that there was a littermate with severe generalised demodex that did not repond to treatment and was euthanased. It was a lot of money to lose-but the health risks were greater ,so i did it. Some dont think it is hereditary, but from the amount of dogues, staffies etc i have seen with it,i do believe there is a strong genetic component.
-
When i had that litter of 18 and had to handraise 6,they were put onto solids at 10 days as they were fading despite 2 hr feedings round the clock.Vet told me to alternate between farex/yogurt.milk and the strained beef/carrots and tiny amount of strained liver.Beef was the heinz baby food. They doubled there weight in one week and never looked back.I used a syringe to get it down, just had it sloppy enough to draw up.

Really? So if a breeder sells a puppy with entropian on all four lids, cherry eye, skin allergies, etc the puppy owner should wear those costs??? Sorry, but that is not fair. If someone forks out for a pedigree puppy, they should get something healthy!! If they dont want to send the pup back, and get a full refund, then yes, that is fair.If they wish to keep the pup,why should the breeder then have to keep paying for vet bills past the purchase price when they do have the option to send it back and get a refund. Dogs can get sick, develop problems same as a human can, despite being from healthy parents and i think to refund/replace or in this case pay for op,is fair. I know someone who has spent thousands on their dog who developed allergies to pretty much everything environmental-he requires weekly injections, sometimes twice a week of the specialist allergy injection, they have chosen to pay for it rather than send the dog back -their choice, they have to wear the cost. Flame suit firmly in place.
