I too did all of that, even showed them some of the higher drive dogs .I know circumstances can change, and in those instances i am happy to bring the dog back and rehome.Little short of doing a police type interview i realy dont know what else to do,you do have to rely mostly on the honesty of the purchaser,as a breeder i was brutally honest about telling people what will happen if they dont train, socialise, how much excercise ,feeding etc.As i hadthe grandmother, siblings ,parents etc the new people were able to see the different personalities in that line.I drove a few times 200 kms each way to help a owner with training issues and also used to take him for "holidays"when her daughter developed medical issues.Sometimes i think breeders saying they will take back dogs leaves the owner with the easy option nowdays when the slightest event occurs, but thats what you have to do to guarantee the pups you breed are safe. It comes back to society having a "throwaway"attitude,or pass the responsibility on . I even gave talks/demos at the kids primary school, pet days and vet clinic on responsible pet ownership, and even random people that wanted to just pat the dogs on walks etc! Their is no way a breeder can foresee that an owner will get a job transfer o/s,or that one will lie to get a pup now and then go o/s for months,or decide to have 2 more kids 3 mths after getting a pup that the husband had been wanting for 10 years-especially as her kids were 16+ at the time . I even had people stay for weekends, meet adult dogs(without cute puppies around). And show people arent exempt from dumping dogs either,or having unrealistic expectations,so its not just the general public

I talked to potential new owners about my breeds requirements, suitability, problems etc until i was blue in the face. Many people came 2-3 times over a 6 week period when the pups are born, countless hours writing emails, phone calls etc,in many instances had to give up a weekends work to spend the day/s talking at length to owners.Gave comprehensive info packs,i turned more people away when their expectations of the breeds requirements werent realistic,BUT I STILL HAD DOGS COME BACK.Normally between 12-18 mths which is the period i talked to the new owners at length about. Reasons given were-reduction of income, moving and cant have a dog,had a couple of more kids and the dog was too big, wanted to do SAR,but partner didnt like the dog and abused it.Generally i found the blokes loved the dogs, the partners did too UNTIL they grew out of the cute puppy stage/started to drool.Training was the other big one-despite telling them how much training a hound needs, they saw my adult dogs and expected the same in a pup-apparently pups come fully trained!! One of the reasons i am not breeding anymore,am totally sick of unrealistic expectations of some owners and it is the dogs that suffer. One lady i spoke to for a year before she bought a pup, gave all the right answers but turned out to not have a clue, never trained the dog at all and then took off o/seas for 8 mths- I ended up back with the dog, gave her back her money(because when she returned, she wanted the dog back, never mind the 8 mths free boarding i did for her, feed, vet bills and training ) But on the other hand,i have had some awesome owners, they did make up for the crappy ones

Under Cover Pet Shop Assistant On Today Tonight?
centitout replied to Shmurps's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yeah lol they wouldnt get a Pug from me....I can and will be fussy where my puppies go, whats wrong with that....yuppies that drive fancy cars and live in Brighton....they arent about to DUMP their Pugglet. What an elitist snobbish attitude to dare judge someone by the postcode they happen to live in . My suburb is under Blacktown Council and my postcode is 2147 and I bet I provide a better home and environment for my pampered pooches and am a much more responsible owner than your yuppie snobs in Brighton . Blacktown is the largest growing area in Sydney and there are a lot of young families here and I think it is absolutely terrible that they would not get a look in at a pup from Breeders like yourselves that are so judgemental with elitist snobby attitudes I dont sell my puppies to families with only small children....they drop pug puppies....and I dont sell puppies to families that already have a large dog. I can list all the reasons and give examples if you like and I can also get all the figures and facts of Pugs that end up in rescue. Call me a snob, I dont sell to the masses and I dont have to.....as I have said before I dont have that many litters....let the Pug breeders that have litters on the ground all the time sell to the masses. So going by you post- if someone happens to reside in a particular postcode, they are relegated to only buying puppies from dodgy breeders??? Wow. With an attitude like yours it's no wonder Pugs are so popular in the BYB market. Yes you can sell to whoever you like but the way you are coming across sounds extremely snobby and judgmental rather than being concerned about the welfare of your puppies. Why will you not sell to someone with a larger dog? What happens if they get a larger dog later on? This forum never ceases to amaze me....I make one statement and you have all run with it like mad women and now I am a snobbest elitist that is so effing funny. Now if I had said that I breed all the time and have 3 litters on the ground at all times and I sell to anyone, renters, dole bludgers, potential bybers simp;y cos they live in Melton, you name I dont discrimate....what would you have said then????? Say things as it is...dont pussy foot around. I put a great deal of time into each and every mating be blowed if I am going to sell them to just anyone. I fostered a black pug that was extremely food aggressive cos the Lab he lived with in the backyard would bully him away from his food and eat his too....owners didnt care or supervise...surrender the viscous Pug, yeah right...the poor thing was starving and they didnt care. So thats why I wont sell to someone that has a big dog....specially if there is no one home during the day. My chi ran with up to 5 adult/14 puppy bloodhounds and boy did they respect him at meal times! And sleep times and play times.......he is a very dominant little boy but its not caused through being out with the big dogs-he was like it from the day we brought him home. -
Thats one of the things i thought of,but she has been gone for over 2 mths now,and the teat wasnt hot, temp normal etc.She was only put on amoxycillan,so maybe something stronger is needed?
-
I'd suggest contacting Baylord, as I recall one of her bitches requiring some attention to a mammary lump when she was only relatively young and prior to ever having a litter!! I must admit,it is worrying, but the vet doesnt think its a mammary tumour-he said it is more like several soft lumps, not the normal tumour feel, but he still recommends taking it off.She was to be used for breeding if she passed her health tests, but i dont know about that now.
-
Just hoping someone on here has some ideas-I have never had this problem before and have really only seen mammary tumours in old dogs, generally undesexed. Sent a entire bitch to a breeder several months ago,she had just finished having a psuedopregnancy after her first heat at 13 mths. She developed a lot in the teat area but that had disappeared when she left.A few weeks ago owner noticed her scratching the front nipple, and on squeezing a small dribble of blood tinged discharge came out,but otherwise wasnt sore to touch etc.Went to vets where she was put on ABS,palpated and tissue sample taken .He said there was no hard masses, but the teat had a lot of soft ,lumpy tissue,so i put it down to hormonal maybe? He said to squeeze it out for a few days, but now it has blown up, after he put a drain in,and she went crappy in the coat etc,so now he is recommending removal .The owner is willing to send the tissue off for biopsy, but not keen on removal.Anyone have any clue or had this in a young bitch before? Thanks

Jessie, just because you know how to use a lot of big words which you can express so eloquently(as do I-Dux of my school!!) it doesnt mean you know what the hell you are talking about. When you have been a breeder for a few years, then maybe you can express your opinion . NO ONE is denying health problems that cavs have, but testing alone will NOT guarantee the problem can be obliterated, that is what Jed and Dellcara are trying to get across to the people who are not breeders themselves. If testing alone were all that was necessary to eliminate diseases,HD as an example wouldnt be expressed in a dog that is bred from parents, grandparents etc that are all tested.0:0 to 0:0 doesnt guarantee a pup wont one day be affected. Sometimes,a breeder of many years experience that knows their lines inside out and back to front, keeps track of health in the puppies they breed, are as ethical as they come(JED )are of more use to a breed, and have more knowledge in their little finger, than most people have on this entire forum and you want them to stop breeding because they question the use of being told who to mate their dog to, to reduce(although from the results,1 in 4 pups would still be affected anyway)SM? That shows how much you DONT know about dog breeding. No one except the puppy farmers would want to breed this breed anymore, and according to the vitriolic outbursts on here ,I dont blame them.Goodbye Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. -
my uncle used to breed anglo nubiaans, saanens and toggenburgs-i remember riding around on the quiet ones.I have also seen goats and a very large ox trained to saddle/harness and that is the same as a pony in harness. But wild goats being treated like that is totally different-i have a huge soft spot for goats and that treatment was totally inhumane.
-
i have too-i dont own my own place,so i cant comply with the planning laws,DA etc.And i wont be told how to raise/socialise my pups or where to whelp them etc,so no more for me-i just dont have the money laying around to burn in order to breed the odd litter every few years.
-
I could see this coming last year-it is already a done deal to get rid of registered breeders,I am glad i decided to get out altogether.I have my old show dog Demon back and after he passes, that will be it for me=no more dogs .

Collection of semen-$500+petrol and 2 days off work semen implantation for 2 bitches =1400 + 3 days off travel backwards and forwards sunday night c-section for one-loss of 1 pups=$1000 for c-section,8 pups alive that developed severe infection due to dead pup, lost 4 ($5600+$300 in vet bills for deceased pups) other bitch -post whelping x-ray/abs-$250 I pup mauled by other bitch at 6 weeks-loss of $1400+$600 in vet bills trying to save it. vaccination,m/c for 16 pups =$1040 feed bill for both litters over 8 weeks($150 per week by 5 weeks just for pups)$800 extra electricity fo rheat lamps-$450 travel 300 kms by 4 to deliver pups to airport+petrol registrations-$300+ puppy packs by 10=$100 worming etc-$120 kept 2 pups to run on=$3000 in no sale 1 pup sent off on payment scheme(paid for 6 mths later) the $2000 profit i sort of had went on another stud The above doesnt include all misc. expenses, more time off work,3 days in sydney to send one to NZ, nor does it include health testing fo r 3 dogs over the next year,or the 8 desexing rebates($250-300 each). So it looks like i do it for the love of it,cause i dont make any significant profit. I dont have a problem with breeders that do,they are entitled to it though. So please dont say all breeders make a profit.

Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
centitout replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
I just heard,my heart goes out to you Jed. -
I have sold a couple of my good puppies slightly cheaper to people who may/may not show, the quality of the home is of more interest to me,but this is my right as a breeder. If a breeder charges more/and gets it-good on them, why should they have to be broke to supply people with puppies? For the love of it doesnt pay the feed bills/vet bills, ongoing husbandry/stud fees/c-sections or anything else that crops up during a year. I also dont charge anymore for colour-I have several people enquiring about my blanket black boy,and black and tans are more popular than reds, but again, that is my choice,if others do it differently-that is there choice also.

Big Brag For A Big Boy- Cootamundra
centitout replied to Irish Lassy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Its great to see a hound of any breed win,but especially the shaggy ones Congratulations -
I dont charge any difference either, pick or not,but that is up to the individual breeder what they do.
-
OT- do you have clydies??? They are my favourite breed. If you are ever showing out this way,can yo ulet me know-i would love to meet you!!! And i know what its like to have horses at shows with the general public too-can be a nightmare.
-
Went today, but withdrew, bloody Edward decided to limp again this morning,so off to the chiro. He gets knocked over a bit when they all have their crazy time in the afternoon, but its getting ridiculous now I did get to meet Wolfsong today though.
-
You can only screen so far,a lot of people are very aware of what breeders want to hear, they will quite happily sign a contract knowing full well they will not stand up in court, once the dog is in their possession they can do what they like and they know it.So desexing contracts,non-breeding contracts etc arent worth the paper they are written on.This is on one solicitors advice anyway. I am looking at desexing before leaving,i know the risks for a giant breed, but after seeing quite a few byb using bloodhounds now, what choice is there.? I dont think mandatory desexing is the way to go,more education starting at school level maybe. My daughter had a group of friends whose mothers were in an "oodle" club, they all had several litters a year between them and couldnt see the problem, maybe if they had to visit the pound one day it may change there mind.So whenever these girls used to come and stay i did my part to educate them!!!
-
Depends on breed i think-i have 3 entire males,2 fully mature ones and a pup, also have 3 females. They all run together, but the desexed bitch is the boss!
-
I got mine for Coota today-will be there un less the problem child gets another pain in the a@#se problem, like wasps stinging him under the eye again. Why is it always the day before a show????
-
I have had heaps of people with only a mobile contact number, and it really does annoy me,as i have to ring THEM back and they will often be on the phone for anything up to 1/2 hr.For one litter there,my phone bill was TRIPLE due to mobiles.I can understand why breeders wont often ring a mobile number back.Sorry to all you owners who only have mobiles, but some just dont think about the expense for the breeder as they have $300 worth of calls month from their phone with $30 credit-landlines do not have that !!!!!!!
-
My vets sometimes wouldnt, but would if the horse was hairy,or the vein deeper down in the case of a thick necked or fat horse. The newer vet did though as she had a few incidents with losing the vein during small ops requiring anaesthetic or sedation, made it easier to feel/see.
-
Different vets,different methods i guess
-
So how did you find out an entire litter was affected-did the breeder tell you?Just interested ,not flaming you The breeder told me. Well then they were being honest, and like others,a bite can change in a few days and either remain bad,or right itself.
