I like my hounds exactly the way they are-i do not want to see watered down,no/low drive layabouts.They suit me,my personality,my family.If you dont want something big,drooly and wrinkly that likes to sniff,get another breed.Whatever happened to common sense .A big part of my breeding focuses on temperament and drive,pups that are that little bit higher drive go to the people that want an active,lively dog.I tell them to train it in basic trailing so they can have fun,keeps the dog stimulated etc.That is where a decent breeder will match the personality of the dog to the potential owner first. I had one owner that specifically requested the naughtiest girl i had,and i am comfortable they can train her and keep her stimulated.That same dog with one of the other owners may become a real handful. Public-choose your dogs APPROPRIATELY and take responsibility for what you choose instead of dumping all responsibility onto breeders to make their breeds suitable for people that want the easy fix all the time.

Can you say the dogs name in the ring? I know it sounds stupid,but i wasnt aware you cant mention your dog by name if you are the handler in the ring . Can tell i havent shown a lot

Wait till you see him run then-its the funniest thing as all the skin on his head rolls back,so his eyes go white and then everything crashes back into place with the next stride

I'm sorry, I wasn't taking notes (tho many people were). I'm sure they'll start posting soon and if I disagree with their 'take' on what was said am happy to jump into the fray But basically - no-one is against pure-breed dogs. Overwhelmingly they feel that registered breeders are doing the right thing. They don't want to see breeds disappear. However breeders do need to do something about breeds that have problems and 'problems' does include behavioural issues that can be genetic. There were also some interesting points about desexing. You might not realise a dog is a truly great dog until it is mature (even up to 6 years of age) but if it's been desexed as it is a 'pet' you've lost that dog from the gene pool. Perhaps more sales on breeders terms???? Sorry,not keen to do breeder contracts anymore-none have worked out,1 was someone i knew well!And giant breed dogs are more than middle age at 6,so not really an option leaving them until then before breeding. Wish i could have gone though,would have been "interesting".

After lots of 'mini free stacking" this last week,i think they are getting the hang of it ,well at least the standing still for a second part! I am using milo cereal,anything else and Edward ends up a raving,slobbery lunatic.A few more months and they should definately be getting the hang of it.Now i just have to work on my handling,which is pretty ordinary As long as we have fun,i am happy,i just want them to enjoy there first show on saturday ,only a small ag show to start though at Crookwell.

Well I firmly believe you just comfirmed my argument. What you are saying there is that the cost is justified because you view it as a job. Don't get me wrong, not for one second do I condone pet shops selling dogs, or any animal for that matter and firmly believe that it should be made law that they can not sell live animals. But seriously, have a look at what has been written to my poking, for the most part it consists of self noting and bitchiness. Well,my puppy owners are very happy with my "self noting".It is not a job,it is my passion/hobby whatever you would like to call it.There is no way i would spend tens of thousands if it was just my "job".I do it because i love the breed,i love my dogs and i love seeing someone with the same passion as me being able to own one and it is not easy to do that. And i have rescued various dogs in the past,and also owned many a crossbred,some healthy,some far from it. And no way are the costs for my hobby reflected in the price-you would be paying many ,many times more than that if i chose to do that.

My 2 1/2yr old son saw this pic and said "Mum, thats a pretty puppy!!!" She is gooooooorgeous Not a corgi fan normally,but i have to say that pup is cuter than any of my pups,what an awesome pic.

Thrive D is an enzyme supplement that helps to breakdown food,theoretically resulting in less gas production. Having a bloat prone breed myself.i am always vigilant with mine with dry food,they get a minimal amount,and only because they didnt look so great on total raw,but they are always fed twice a day and seperated .Hot weather is prime bloat time.

I must be a total snob then,i used to show horses AND i sell mine for $1400 But in that you get the cost of desexing refunded,m/c,reg papers,8 + weeks worth of socialising ALOT, most have basic lead training,info pack and for ever ongoing support- bloody hell,i will be driving once a week(300 km) to help an owner with her dog as he goes through the "teenage" period.See if you get that from an oodle breeder,or if the dog has a proven genetic condition,i will give you back your money ,take the dog back or give it to you to help with vet fees-try and get that from a back yarder,puppy famer,pet shop. Most of the cross bred dogs i had when i was a kid were our vets tickets to new BMW'S. Elite puppy farmers my arse-do you have the faintest idea of the amount of work/money/time and heartache that goes into producing a litter that you take pride in-then the ongoing costs involved in new bloodlines,health testing,showing,dog sports and just their normal everyday husbandry?? So someone like you can have a beautiful,healthy,sane PUREBRED pet. You really havent a clue

It should have been picked up at first vacc,and euthanased by "breeder".I too think it has come from BYB that maybe has "papers" for the parents,but until it is investigated further and the "breeder" identified-ALL registered breeders will now again,be tarred with the same brush. If the pup turns out to have NOT come from a registered breeder with one of the CC's,then a full retraction is needed. Bloody big PR stunt to try to give them credibility

There is one more issue to consider. Any bitch kept by a rescue for only a couple of weeks and rehomed undesexed may be pregnant. No adoptive family should have have to whelp and raise pups from a rescue bitch. And it happens. All it does is deter others from adopting - word travels. Absoutely right, My inlaws adopted a lovely Miniature Daschund from a pound several years ago. She was thin but soon began to put on weight, had quite an appetite...and six puppies quite unexpectantly one evening. My mum had the same thing happen with one from the RSPCA-we had no idea she was pregnant at the time.

Hi Geo, sorry about your friends dog. My sister has a "bloater" ex aquis lab who bloats after every meal,has a few ripper farts and is then ok,always worried about him.He bolts his feed(all their work dogs do) so she feeds him out of a ring cake pan to slow him down,or you can put a heavy chain in his bowl,so he has to slow down to get around it. Have you tried Thrive D?

i would of announced/complained about it over the loudspeaker,i cant stand rude/arrogant/nasty people at all.

I will not gastropexy any of mine-my vets have had to repair a few though done by other vets.I had one bitch bloat years ago.All of mine are fed twice a day,i dont soak,but i DO NOT RAISE THEIR FEEDERS.They are also all fed seperately to minimise stress ,which has been found to be a contributing factor in bloat. Mine are fed 1/2 raw,1/2 dry,bu tin very hot weather,are only fed something like a frozen raw carcass or heart etc. I had a husky bloat after a can of PAL ,he had to be pts but was found to have a suspected splenic tumour as well. Bloat can run in lines in any breed,if a dog bloat at a young age their is an increased risk in littermates bloating-will try to post the link when i work out how.

In WA we have no legal requirements that I know of. However, for reasons of liability and insurance coverage, I need to see that a vet has signed off on the vaccination due date. I don't feel that decisions relating to frequency of vaccination should be made by kennel owners -- that is a vet's function. With respect to KC, it's complicated. When K9 cough goes through a kennel some of the vaccinated dogs often get it while some of the unvaccinated (for KC) don't. I recommend, but stopped requiring KC in my kennels after having been told by a couple vets that they don't use it on their own dogs; not to mention having a litter of pups apparently get KC from the vaccine. Another vet I use told me that if you really want to protect your dog from KC, get it jabbed (or nasal puffed) two weeks before taking it to kennels. Last time I read the AVA recommendations they still recommend KC as an annual shot. I'm left shaking my head. But the disease is very rarely fatal, and in many cases it is so unserious that you barely notice the two or three days the dog has a mild cough. So the outcome of making a wrong decision isn't horrible. I had 2 litters come down with KC at 8 weeks old when i had one of the adult dogs done with the intra nasal .Within 3 days of him having the vaccine all the dogs had it,2 developing pnuemonia despite being put on prophylactic AB'S straight away.

I'm sorry totally off topic but 18 pups does that make the bitch like Octomum? How does she feed them all? Was it madness at 6-8 weeks Centitout? What is a normal size litter for bloodhounds? OT- Yes,was pretty full on for a while :laugh:and no,not quite normal,but 12-14 is the norm.A uk breeder had a bitch that had 20 and had to handraise

$33 an hour was only on sundays,i did 4 hrs . And human nurses should be paid double to what they do ,as should police.

I dont use it either,in fact i dont use any supplements before mating,during pregnancy or whelping.They get everything they need from what they get fed.

Natures Gift is the only tinned food i will use,the dogs love it.was given to the post whelping bitches till they decided not to be so fussy!!

Yes,they would be Brunsfelsia (grew up in a nursery :D )there are so many toxic plants/allergenic plants though. Tomatoes,ivy,yew,potato vine(related to deadly nightshade)euphorbias,oleander iris,any of the bulb esp jonquils/daffodils,arums,digitalis(foxgloves) and so many others.Contact allergenic/irritant plants are conifers,Rhus tree(toxiodendren) most grevilleas and a few other natives,wandering jew,alot of grasses etc.

Have been doing the food reward for walking into the stack,they arent very good yet but are getting the hang of it.I just have to be patient,not worry about foot placement etc until they have just learnt to just stand still.Am doing it now when they are up the road,inside,just out in the yard etc multiple times a day so they think its a game. thanks everyone for the advice so far.

Ellz,you state that breeders should only send their pups on early morning flights.You are 2 hrs from the airport-i am 6 hrs from sydney, so a 12 hr return trip,bit of a difference.I could not afford to drive down 12 individual times,and stay o/n to put pups on early morning flights,freight is steep enough without that .That is why mine all fly out of Parkes regional to sydney for their connecting ones,that is a 3 hr return trip there. And only breeding in the winter isnt practical or a solution for me as i have heard said before on a different thread,or might have been here. I have delivered pups to the airport,only to have connecting flights delayed at sydney and they didnt arrive at the pick up airport till hours later-how can i control that? They are all booked through Dogtainers,they are responsible for making sure my pup gets there on time,if the plane is delayed they should make sure there is someone available to check ,water pup-that is what we are paying for. To the OP,again,very sorry for both you ,pup owners and the pup.

None of mine are crate trained for inside purposes.I do put them in a crate as pups for a while with some toys/bone inside only to get them used to it should an owner wish to crate train. I just take them out after a meal or if they have woken up,like the old days
