  1. Here's an article on savingpets.com.au http://www.savingpets.com.au/?p=5585 I Googled local council impounded pet statistics and it gave me a few different hits. I don't know about a national statistics database but certainly each council should keep their own records.
  2. Here's one for Victoria. It's just for one year but certainly gives you an idea. http://www.workingdogrescue.com.au/wp-cont...opy-186x300.jpg

  4. I had someone who would have taken her. I was devastated when I rang to be told that BSL meant she would not be released. It's the same here in Qld. Last year I rescued a PBT hanging from our fence, took it to the vet and put posters up with my phone number. The vet held onto the dog as they refused to contact council as they knew BSL would have killed her. Luckily the owner rang me a couple of days later and they were reunited. I can understand owners not stepping forward if their dog is taken by council. I reckon they think they would be fined for having one and are too scared to say anything. This sweetheart did not deserve to die.
  5. Thanks See if you can get out to the Cairns Tropical Zoo at Clifton Beach. It's well worth the 20 minute drive out of town for all the wildlife you can capture. You can see several of my photos from there in my Red Bubble portfolio. Or pop up top of the casino in town to the Rainforest Dome. Lots of great critters in there too.
  6. A couple of geckos having a cuddle
  7. Just read this thread and had my heart in my mouth until I got to the last page and found he has improved and is coming home. I live in Cairns and we have toads by the millions. My best haul in our back yard in one night is 113. My boy Bud used to munch them and get high and I'd have to hose out his mouth. Thankfully he is a big dog and that was the only effect he ever had but I used to live in dread that he would bite into one and get a larger dose of the toxin. He doesn't do it anymore thankfully! Yayy to Radar being well again!!
  8. It looks like Hives to me. My boy Bud got it from plants in the garden of the home we moved to. A Cortisone injection fixed him right up.
  9. My Chip suffers from hypothyroidism and his only symptom was that he was overweight (although I overfed he and his brother so we never suspected another cause). He has a poppy eye also and that is the only reason we got him tested and the result was low so he was put on 1 tablet twice a day to start with. He is now on 1.5 tablets twice a day because at his last panel his level was 5. Far too low. The vet was amazed that he showed no signs of diminished health and energy at this level so maybe he is just an odd one out. Nevertheless he is on thyroxine for life and at a 100 tablets a month we now spend nearly $400 a year on his tablets. Since starting on thyroxine he has lost over 10kg with a change in diet as well helping our cause. You can see the difference in him on his blog. http://wp.aucado.us/?page_id=42
  10. I feel your pain. I lost my old boy Sparky 6 1/2 years ago and mourn him to this day. My pain has lessened over time but I think it has been helped by our ACD Chip coming along and having so many of Sparky's habits and quirks. Sparky was with me 16 1/2 yrs and he was my soul dog before I even knew what one was. I cried for years after losing Sparky and his ashes sit on my bedside chest of drawers with his photo and his collar. Every night I continue our bedtime ritual and put my lip balm on and kiss my fingers and place them ever so gently on the box containing his ashes. So, I say, yes, it does ease over time but if you have not yet found another to fill that hole in your heart you will grieve until you do.
  11. Hey there, thanks so much. Yeah, very happy with how they are now. They both need to lose another kg each but not pushing it. Chip was diagnosed before the diet started, or around the same time from memory, so going on the Thyroxine and dieting at the same time kind of worked together to get the weight off him. Funny thing is we got his thyroid tested for his poppy eye, not for his weight, and turns out his poppy eye has nothing to do with it but his weight did. Chip had his panels done a couple of months ago and his Thyroxine was increased so he is now on 1 1/2 tablets twice a day.
  12. I have taken over 10kg off each of my boys over the last year. Did it by brutally cutting down the quantity and substituting some of it with boiled and mashed pumpkin which is fantastically low in calories but adds bulk to their meals. Also gave them low fat yoghurt and sardines for the fish oil. This is their diary of their weight loss. You can go right to the back to see how fat they were at the start. http://wp.aucado.us/?page_id=42
  13. I'm so sorry for your loss. How awful to come home to find him like that but how great to know that he chose to go across the bridge when he did, before you had to make that decision for him. He looked like a real character with his huge grin. I hope you find solace in his memory.

    Sparky

Sparky was my soul dog before I even knew what one was. When I got him from the Lort Smith Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne they said he was Australian Terrier/Border Collie. To this day I would swear he had Pomeranian in him due to his head shape and long hair. Any opinions welcome on his breeding possibilities. He was my velcro dog and he wasn't even an ACD. I still miss my "old boy" who my husband called my "handbag" cos as he got older he was carried everywhere on my hip. He was the most gentle, friendly dog ever, but he had absolutely no clues about fetching or playing ball. He loved worms though! LOL He also loved getting some lip balm at bedtime. Strawberry was his fave.
  15. Shaz, Bandit will be sorely missed and I am so sad at his tragic end. Sending you big hugs and cattle dog kisses in lieu of Cocker ones from your boy. I'm sure that tree will grow big and strong in his memory. Love, Di, Bud & Chip xxx
  16. No offense taken It is my opinion that an aggressive dog will mark whether he can cock his leg or not. Instead of peeing up against everything that stands, he pees on the grass, leaving dead brown patches everywhere. I would much rather he peed against the fence or trees so it doesn't kill the lawn. Even when out walking, Bud will pee against trees or bushes or power poles and Chip will just sniff and maybe pee on the grass nearby. He doesn't actually pee a lot when out walking. Bud is the one who does and he is not dog aggressive but very alpha. Another thing is if Chip pees on the grass at home, Bud will then mark over the top of it so we have double pee killing the grass Can't win.
  17. I dream of something being available to fix dog aggression. My desexed ACD, Chip, is now 3 1/2 and was neutered at age 1 and his dog aggression has not eased one iota. He lunges and barks at anything canine (or feline) when we are out. Off leash he is controlled by bringing him to my side and making him sit whenever another dog comes near and on leash I just have to preempt him by growling at him and giving his lead a sharp tug to get his attention so he is not focused on the other dog. He is terrible in the car if he sees another dog on the street as well. He is only good with our alpha male ACD/Kelpie Bud and one other dog who was introduced as a puppy to him (Cocker Spaniel). I waited til he was 1 before desexing him because I was told that he would start cocking his leg once he was sexually mature and he just never did cock his leg so I gave up and got him done when he was 1. He still has never cocked his leg and my hubby and I have a theory that it is because he is so submissive to Bud that he acts like a bitch and that is possibly why he is so aggressive to other dogs as well. He has to take out his alpha-ness somehow Happy for any advice or pointers on what the drug is. Di
