Premium Dog Foods...too Expensive!
panda replied to Cassiepeia's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When we buy a dog food, we read the label and look for the ingredients. Naturally, we only want the best dog food. More often than not, we don’t really know some of the ingredients these manufacturers are putting in the bag. According to the AAFCO chicken by-product , it consists of the dry, ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines -- exclusive of feathers except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices. Under AAFCO guidelines, acceptable meat by-product dog food ingredient can include animal lungs, spleens, kidneys, brains, livers, blood, bones, low-temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. However, livers can be infested with worms (liver flukes) or diseased with cirrhosis. Lungs can be filled with pneumonia. Even parts of animals, such as “stick marks”, --the area of the body where animals have been injected with antibiotics, hormones, or other drugs — are used for meat by-product The most objectionable source of protein used is euthanized cats and dogs. It is not uncommon for thousands of euthanized dogs and cats to be delivered to rendering plants, daily, and thrown into the rendering vat—collars, I.D. tags, and plastic bags — to become part of dog food called “meat meal”. It is difficult to determine which company is using products like these on dog food, or mixing in tumorous tissues, hooves, hair, feathers and some unsavory fillers we occasionally hear about. But it is common knowledge that the industry is built on the undesirable remnants of the human food industry. And common sense suggests that the cheaper the food, the more you suspect its quality we call bad dog food. According to the USDA, there is no mandatory federal inspection of ingredients used in food manufacturing, though some states may oversee the canning processes. Feeding your dog with slaughterhouse wastes increases their chances of getting cancer and other degenerative diseases because it is considered toxic dog food. Chicken by-products are much less expensive and less digestible than the chicken muscle meat. The ingredients of each batch can vary drastically in ingredients (heads, feet, bones etc.) as well as quality, thus the nutritional value is also not consistent. Don't forget that byproducts consist of any parts of the animal OTHER than meat. If there is any use for any part of the animal that brings more profit than selling it as "by-product", rest assured it will appear in such a product rather than in the "by-product" dumpster. Hi Catzatsea, Do they have home delivery service? I buy mine from www.petdeli.com.au Free Delivery Sydney Metro for orders $60 and above. I made an enquiry about the frequent buyers card and they said they'll let me know as they will need to speak to someone in Melbourne next week about it. I'm in Bondi and it can be a lot of traffic going to Leichhardt to get a bag of food. But if they do home delivery, it will be worth while to order from them to have the free bag later. -

Hi Kristie, Of the eagle foods, the holistic line is much better than their regular line. it's right in line with the other high-end foods. The holistic range contains no corn. The non-holistic ones are still good, definitely much better than the usual mainstream foods. But I prefer the holistic range. -

Hasapandabear I hope I'm feeding the right amount for my dog. I use the measurement of 1cup (250ml) and 1/4cup (60ml) It said on the chart for 14kg dog, feed 1-1 1/2cup per day or 100-150Grams. So I give my dog 1 1/4cup per day. -

Aww In order to get 11th and 17th bags free, you'd have to be a breeder? I had that privileged programme with Innova. 10 stamps give you a free bag of Innova pet food. I just feed him Eagle Pack Holistic now with one or two eggs a week. No more Innova. -

Oh Wow! Eagle Pack must be happy with you I guess as long as my dog maintain his weigh, he should be ok. Next order I'll ask for a much later expiry date to be safe. -

Hi Miranda, how heavy is your dog? My dog is about 12kg. I feed him Eagle Pack Holistic 1 1/4-1 1/2 cup per day depending on the exercise for the day. I ordered a 15kg bag, and I opened it around mid July, I still got 11kg left. Expiry date on the bag is 17th November. I think he might finish it just before the expiry date. I use the metric cup to measure his food, and I thought he'd finish the 15kg bag in about 9 weeks. I'm surprised that I still got 11kg left when I weigh the bag. It's been 4 weeks since I opened the bag, and I only fed him 4kg so far when it should have been 8kg. -
My dog vomited within two minutes after his morning meal this morning. This happened three times in the last 10 days, but only morning meals. I think he was eating too fast on an empty stomach. I gave his dry food again one hour after and he was fine. About 10 days ago he was vomiting bile (Lots of it) when I took him out for a walk, within mins he went to the toilet and he was happy. Should I be concern?

Hi Tiggy, Eagle Pack Holistic selection don't have corn. I've been feeding my dog Innova and Eagle Pack Holistic up till last week. We just ran out of Innova and I ordered a 15kg bag of Chicken Holistic from http://www.petdeli.com.au/ It works out cheaper to buy a large bag. I won't be getting Innova anymore as 15kg bag of Eagle Pack Holistic should last a couple of months. Innova is a rich food -- some dogs do well, some don't, some gain weight. It is a high quality food. Of the eagle foods, the holistic line is much better than their regular line. it's right in line with the other high-end foods. The non-holistic ones are still good, definitely much better than the usual mainstream foods.

Hi Dogmad, Ok, so $80 upwards is the price in Sydney for C5..I have no choice then. I don't have a greyhound but someone said that you can get a C5 much cheaper if you go to a greyhound vet. So which vet in Double Bay do you go to? I used to take my dog to WOOLLAHRA VETERINARY HOSPITAL, Bondi Junction. Unfortunately, he's retired. Since then I took my dog to two other vets but still don't feel comfortable with them. I'd apprecitate it if you could give me more infomation about your vet. Oh, and what's the parking like in Double Bay? Thanks...
-
Thanks Gapvic. Umm, I don't know where I can find a greyhound vet in the Eastern Suburb, Sydney. I'm happy to pay $65 if it's near by. But $80-$91 is outrages. Would your vet know of a vet in Sydney Eastern suburb?
-
I called 4 vets in total around my area. The cheapest one is $80, then $83.30, $85 and $91 . I asked them about the differences in price as I see some of you pay as low as $55. They said it depends on the area . I supposed it's Bondi price here :p . Maybe I'll have to move :p
-
I just called my local vet, it's $83.30.

Hi lillysmum, just wondering what brand of natural yoghurt do you give to your dog? I give my dog "Jalna" natural yoghurt containing aBc cultures. Is it ok to give whole milk yoghurt to dogs, or it's better to give fat free? He likes either. -

So, in this case it's impacted anal glands? It wasn't serious. -
Possible Hot Spot?... Worst Place....
panda replied to wolf82's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
He had Anal Glands (Sacs). Just as well I did a search on the internet before I called the vet. I told him that I thought it was the anal sac. He said if that was the case, then he would only charge me to squeeze it/them out without consultation. It turned out that I was right so I paid only $14 I think. If it wasn't anal sac, it would have cost an extra $55 for him to find out why Panda was scooting. -
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that InspectorRex. I'm glad you have found the right food for her.
-
Aww..that is so cute, Petal. By the way, what were you feeding him before Eagle Pack?

Yes, I'm thinking it's anal gland like the rest of the peopel here. My dog had it when he was a puppy. I took him to the vet and he performed internal expression where the index finger is inserted in the rectum, the anal sac located and expressed with the thumb. He showed me what to do, but if it happens again, I still wouldn't know what to do The following links have good information about anal sac. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cl...4&articleid=510 , http://www.vetstop.com.au/info/AnalSac.htm -
I think you should get your facts straight before you put comments like this on the forum. The account wasn't deleted. She initially was the one to say she would not be posting on here anymore because of what I assumed was a comment in one of the threads that wasn't praising the product. I did however say to her later that it is probably better that she no longer posts as it can be taken as advertising. She has emailed me recently to say she can no longer access the forum (I cannot see a reason why though as I have done nothing to her membership to cause this). Edited to add clarity Troy, I didn't know that. I only got the information from her via e-mail. She sent me an e-mail saying that my samples are on the way and she is no longer a member of dolforums. She also said that the account has been deleted and she is no longer welcome here. That's how I got the information. I didn't just make this up. It happened to me twice that I couldn't access the forum, but then I realised that I had to sign in again. Perhaps she needs to sign in again. I guess the reason she thought that her account has been deleted is because she couldn't access it. Just a coincident I supposed. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

InspectorRex, does your dog have allergies to other proteins? Please read below information I copied from http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#commercial He's on the holistic fish at the moment, and I was going to order the holistic duck, but after I found this information I'm going to settle on the holistic chicken or lamb. Exotic Proteins Just a note about using foods with exotic proteins, such as duck, venison, fish, etc. These foods are mostly formulated to be able to offer proteins that a dog has never had before for dogs with food allergies. I do not recommend feeding them to normal dogs. If you feed these foods routinely, then if your dog does develop food allergies at some point, it is going to be very difficult for you to find a protein that he has never had before in order to try an elimination diet. For the most part, I would reserve these exotic protein foods for dogs that have food problems.

Hi Mollyinblue, what did you feed your dog before ordered Eagle Pack? Unfortunately, Amba is no longer a member of dolforums . The account has been deleted and she is no longer welcome here because some members don't agree with a sales rep trying to promote the food on this forum. She did apologise to mods and users though. I got some samples of holistic lamb and duck from Amba just last week. My dog loves them. I remember when I introduced the holistic chicken to him for the first time, he turned his nose away from it. He was quite a picky eater then but I had to stay strong and I didn't give him different food. It took about a week for him to get used to the taste. Now, as soon as I put the food down, he goes straight to it. I can't be happier.
