  1. I agree that because I support a ban on live export that it doesn't mean I buy into the whole PETA line. I don't support a lot of their agenda but this is something I do believe should be stopped. Does anyone know where the rally is planned for in Vic?
  2. I eat meat like most people but I expect the animals of the meat I consume to have a good life followed by a humane death. It doesn't matter what the reason was that thses cattle were tortured it is just not acceptable. I would rather see these cattle processed in this country & give jobs to Australians than send them overseas.
  3. We can only change what happens to our (Australian) livestock but it's a start. I for one find their treatment totally unacceptable & you will never convince me otherwise. It is typical that where money is involved some people will find an excuse to make anything acceptable.
  4. My daughter has a big GSD male aged nearly 5 & 2 girls aged nearly 4 & 2 years. He is an inside dog so is around the girls most of the time (supervised) but he is great with them. We are sure he thinks he just another child only with fur. When we go for walks together & he is off lead he watches to make sure they don't fall behind & rounds them up if they do. He is very gentle & careful of them though he has knocked them over once or twice when he is excited about going out. They just get back up.
  5. Was just thinking about all of this overnight. Operating on animals that dont have any medical issues then they get PTS- correct? Wouldnt it be good if the services of vet students were offered to low income families or pensioners who can't afford alot of veterinary care? Some procedures are really costly but if the University offered a free or low price option then the that could be a huge help to the community and then students would also be able to aide the animal in its recovery. This is exactly what I was thinking. Surely training on live animals that continue to live is better than burying their mistakes? And there are so many low income families that love their pets but find vet treatment out of reach that this would be a better option. I don't know how anyone can find the current situation acceptable.
  6. Recently we had 2 blue greyhounds adopted - both had enquiries about them within the first 24 hours of being put on our website as available. No so the black dogs who often wait months for a home. I was recently talking to a greyhound breeder & mentioned how popular the blue greyhounds were for adoption. She said it's just the opposite with racing as everyone wants to buy black pups because the think they'll be faster. Very few want blue greyhounds because they are believed to be slower. I'm at a loss to understand how colour can determine a good race dog. Surely it's breeding that matters? for all the black greyhounds being breed that will never find a pet home.
  7. What a tragic thing to happen. to you & your family. for Odie & Jazz.
  8. I have a male JRx who will be 10 next month. He is excellent in my home but is not trust worthy in any other home. Since I don't take him visiting all that often it is something I choose to manage ie I leave him outside or I have him on the lead & under control. This is very normal behaviour for both males & females. Your home is his den which he will keep clean but any other home is not & therefore the same as the park in a dogs mind.
  9. I know it's not the correct term but English Staffy is the name usually given to the small pure breed Staffordshire Bull Terrier. There are so many crosses these days & most are much bigger than these dogs that it's not surprising some people are trying to make them distinct from other "staffies". The term English Staffy usually means around here it is a small version. :D For the record I don't own a staffy but if I did it would be a small one.
  10. That's the funny thing Jensgreys because she is not sick in anyway. She is bright & happy, eating & drinking well & has only had the one bout of diarrhoea (because I gave some different food). On the whole the vomits are small, not enough to be really concerned about (according to the vet) but enough to be noticable when you have to clean them up.
  11. No, not all that unusual. Brood bitches are especially likey to be kept that long. We recently had one breeder who dumped 3 old brood bitches, we have rehomed 2 with one still to go (she is the youngest - nearly 9). This dog was not one of them she has just been sitting in kennels (but hasn't been with her owners - they passed her on a long time ago) waiting for years. It is very hard (but not impossible ) to find homes for old girls like this so we usually only take on one at a time.
  12. Thanks for the replies. She had her first bout of diarrhoea today but I'm not sure it's related to the vomiting. I'll ask the vets again to check out any causes for the vomiting. She's booked for desexing on Monday & I'm dreading that as most older females I've had after desexing tend to vomit in the first 24hrs post surgery & they haven't had a history of it. She is a lovely girl otherwise. BTW Persephone she was not homeless, she has just spent her life in racing kennels waiting for a chance to become a pet. So far she is loving every minute of it!
  13. I have a new foster dog. She is an 11 & 1/4 year old greyhound who appears to be in good health. I've had her to the vets & had a blood test done ahead of desexing her & apart from one liver enzyme which is slightly elevated been told she is in good health & the surgery to desex her can go ahead. However she tends to vomit after eating. She eats well & they are mostly small vomits (sometimes after drinking as well) but there have been several large vomits. I have wormed her & she has no diarrhoea. The vets don't seem to be very concerned by this. I thought it might be just because of diet change (she has gone from a poor quality diet to a good quality one) but it doesn't seem to be improving. To me this is not normal. What do others think? Thanks.
  14. Hi Kirty, If Pia was an inside/outside before you probably just got lucky with her being clean in the house rather than her being toilet trained. Now she is inside completely it shows that she really has no idea about it all. Go back to basics & start again. She will learn! From experience some of the females around this age are the hardest to train but I've never known one that hasn't learnt with time & patience. Great photos but we've always known what a lovely girl Pia is.
  15. That is just so cute! I'm sure mine could be taught some of those tricks if I tired , lol.
  16. I would have to suggest the JRT. From my experience they love children & are very tolerant of them. They do well with larger dogs & are happy to be lap dogs. Yes, they can have a stubborn streak but with training they are great little dogs.
  17. Anniek picked up the Christmas cards fresh from the printers yesterday so they are ready to go out now.
  18. I have 2 small dogs, a male JRX & a female mixed breed of similar size. They are both feral when meeting other dogs on lead but are friendly when off lead. The female will only approach other small breed dogs off lead as she isn't that confident with larger dogs but the male will approach anything regardless of size. At home when large dogs vist the female will growl at first but once she realises they are okay she is okay. Their motto is that attack is the best form of defense Perhaps if you'd taken all 3 dogs to a neutral area & had the little dogs off lead the meeting might have gone differently? I don't know these little dogs but poor manners on lead when meeting other dogs is rather common with small dogs (as just about any dog owner can tell you ). I try to avoid encounters as much as possible but my dogs really aren't that aggressive just noisey.
  19. Why can't she come in inside because it's wet? Can't you just wipe her down like the rest of us with inside dogs do? If she has spent the last 3 months being an inside dog that is probably causing her great stress in itself.
  20. Until recently I had 4 large dogs (3 greyhounds & 1 dalmatian) & 2 small dogs (1 JRTx & 1 bitzer) & they all got along great. I used to leave them all together when I out & never had any problems. Off course the little dogs are the bosses & the big dogs would never cross them, lol.
  21. My JRTx loves to roll & cover himself in anything smelly. The worse it smells the prouder he is. He is always so happy about it until I get him home & in the bath that is.
  22. Having met Keiron & played a small part in helping him find you I'm very sorry to hear this. Thank you for giving Keiron a wonderful life. I'm just sorry it ended to soon. Run free at the rainbowbridge: Keiron.
