Four Corners: Greyhound Racing: Live Baiting Revelations
greytpets replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
Well said GAPVic. -
Pure bred greyhounds whether from show or racing lines all need to be muzzled unless they undergo an assessment by GAP. Greyhound crosses are not covered by this law so don't need to be muzzled or assessed. It is true that some people use this loophole with unbranded pure bred greyhounds by claiming they are crosses. I'm not saying I support it but I am aware of it happening. Luckily unbranded greyhounds from racing lines are very rare & we only take on pure greyhounds.

Desexing, Revolting Teeth, Advice And Recommendation Please
greytpets replied to Fergiesmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
We also desex & do dentals at the same time with no problems. The girls can be a bit miserable for a couple of days but generally recover well. The worst part is giving medication if they have had lots of teeth out. -
Told She Was Desexed.. Find Out She Isn't. Accidental Mating
greytpets replied to Wilfred's topic in General Dog Discussion
We often get dogs with unknown histories. NSW dogs often don't have ear tattoo's as proof of desexing. One of our girls (greyhound) was desxed during an emerency ceasar (but we didn't know that) so when she came to us she was operated on to be desexed but of course already done. But that wasn't the end of the story. We had her in foster care for 6 months when the foster carer rang up to say she was in season. Impossible we said then she took sick. Turns out that during the emerengcy ceasar they missed removing an ovary which floated around in her abdo (& was missed during second surgery because it wasn't in the right place) & had lodged next to one of her vital organs causing severe pain & sickness when it started to swell due to her coming into season. So another operation to remove the offending ovary. I like to say she is the only dog I know that has been desexed 3 times. She made a complete recovery & found a wonderful home. I've discussed with our vets if there is any way to determine if a bitch has been desexed & been told no. Blood tests tell you nothing unless she is in season. Ovaries & uterus are too small too detect via ultrasound (unless in season)so the only way is to open up & look. Usually successful unless things aren't were they should be, lol. -

Dog Wanted To Adopt- Victoria

Would they be interested in a greyhound? We currently have Jasmin available who fits that decription but we also have lots of other greyhounds that would be suitable. -

Looking For A Gentle Older Dog.
greytpets replied to gillybob's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I agree, if he can care for a dog, then a lovely calm older greyhound would be perfect. So many of them are waiting for homes. -
We currently have a 9 year old greyhound who is on the small side in foster care with a whippet. She is a lovely quiet older girl in good health looking for a home were she'll be inside a lot though still enjoys her walks & a play outside with the whippet sometimes. Not a bearded collie I know but a lovely dog & an excellent companion. Slightly bigger than 20 kgs (about 25kgs).

Getting Involved In Rescue
greytpets replied to disintegratus's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
We have a foster carer is Sth Moe so distance is not a problem for us but we only have greyhounds to foster. Quarantine is also not a problem as all our dogs only go to foster carers after that & recovering from desexing, etc. -
I picked up my 2 little dogs from kennels on Friday after a week away & got talking to the kennel owner about this case. She said that a lot of dogs completely change personalities in a kennel situation - stress? One case she quoted was of a large breed dog that lived with a small dog & were kenneled together at owners request. Large dog picked little dog up & shook it in his mouth. Little dog survived (after vet treatment) but behaviour was completely against normal for the large breed dog who was normally very friendly & got on well with his friend. I think this is something that needs to be considered when leaving dogs at kennels.

I sometimes have a laugh at the descriptions given to dogs in Blacktown pound then I think how sad it is that they may miss out on a home or rescue because of that description. As Tdierikx says if it is tan with a fawn muzzle it must be a mastiff X & anything black & tan (regardles of how small) must be a rottie X, everything else must be a staffy X. Talk about condemming them from the start.

I'm with you. I don't know how a any rescue group could have so much money for it to go missing. I can only dream of the day we have enough money that I could consider embezzlement, lol.

15yr Old Cattle Dog In Hawkesbury

R.I.P. May. I hope you are running free & healthy at the bridge. For the life she suffered. How anyone can let a dog get to that condition, I don't know. -

I love the oldies & regularly take in old dogs that live with me for a few years. Currently I have 2 - Gemma who came to live with me at 11 & 3 months & is now nearly 13 & 1/2 & Tori who arrived just before her 12th birthday & is now also nearly 13 & 1/2. I find it so much easier to accept their aging & make adjustments because I don't have any memories of them as young dogs. Last October I lost my heart dog, Sally, at 14 & 7 1/2 months. She'd been with me since she was 2. I hated watching her age knowing our time was drawing to an end. I think I gave her a wonderful life right to the end but it was hard for me to watch & I'd worry over every little change.
