Body Language Question For Those With Docked Breeds
anniek replied to anniek's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
thanks boxagirl. We call her Miss Wigglebottom, because her whole body wags with her stump - when she's up and about. Can't see any signs of life from the stump when she's lying down though annieK -
Hi All, My only experience is with greyhounds (rescue) and I am used to the long helicopter tail. I currently have a foster grey who had her tail "docked" as a result of continuing happy tail. When watching body language, I am very used to looking at the tail for signals. I know there are other signs, but as greyhounds tend to sleep with their eyes open, and some have sleep startle, I am looking for a few tips. When my greys are on their beds, if I walk past or even just look at them when they are awake, their tails wag. With my foster there is no signal from her (that I can see). When she is plaing in the yard her hackles come up really quickly. She is not aggressive with my greys, they all do zoomies together, no nipping or anything. Wondering if the hackles are her substiture for the lack of tail. Anyway, not sure what I'm asking here :p just thinking aloud perhaps. annieK

Opinions / Advice In Regards To Heart Murmurs
anniek replied to Stormy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Stormy, Is your foster a greyhound? If so, has this condition been diagnosed by a greyhound vet? I ask because greyhounds commonly tend to have an slightly overdeveloped ventricle, and can often be misdiagnosed as a heart murmour,or having an enlarged heart. A greyhound that we adopted out was taken to a local vet during the summer and was diagnosed with a heart murmour, a pathologically enlarged heart and fluid surronding the heart. The vet prescribed diuretics. The greyhound almost died as she actually was suffering from heat stress and the diuretics made the condition worse. Annie -
If you feed chicken frames and other chicken parts and lamb necks or flaps, there's plentry of fat there. Raw fat is much better for them than cooked fat. annieK

Hi CF - welcome to DOL. Firstly I don't see any meat and bones in her diet. ie not a lot of good nutrition. I would swap the dog roll for raw beef and add a couple of chicken necks. Cut out the dentabones and greenies and feed chicken frames and lamb necks. Distribute the 1 cup of yougurt to a teaspoon a day over the kibble. And the handful of grated cheese????? And peanit butter????? This is what I feed one of mine to give an idea. 37kg male Brekky 1 cup Eagle Pack holistic 100g raw beef couple of chicken necks drizzle of flaxseed oil teaspoon yoghurt once a week a raw egg Dnner chicken frames, lamb necks, turkey drumstick, lamb shank, chicken legs, wings, necks, raw beef - to come up to 700g. Hope this helps annieK

Licking Stiches. [update With Pic]
anniek replied to Just Midol's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Poor Axle - I've had some luck with "wound guard" with spey lickers! It s anticeptic with bitterent, so safe to use with a nasy taste. Usually stops them after the first lick. Good luck. annieK -
HI Cosmolo, We have a canine myofunctional therapist who works with our rescued greyhounds. I've seen the most timid boy become so relaxed his teeth chattered while she was massaging him. Please pm me if you would like her details. She is Melbourne SE. In answer to your quetion though, my male greyhound is so terrified of the vets I would never consider long term treatment (multiple vet or hospital visits) for him if ever the time came he had some incurrable desease. I just wouldn't put him through it. annieK

Oh wow - she's a honey. It will take time, but you will get there - gently gently. annieK -
Yeah, that's the same stuff I've been using. It has definitely improved their coats, although my primary reason for giving it is for the joint health benefits. NAO - it is also a good "allrounder" for heart health, circulation and all sorts of things. Us humans get the odd slurp in the tomato salad too annieK
-
Both my greys (26kg & 36kg) get a slurp of Melrose cold pressed flaxseed every morning. Tinned sardines rarely now. Their coats are very soft and silky as opposed to "hairy". Fosters who usually have dry rough coats get the a bigger slurp of flaxseed and sardines a couple of times a week. annieK

Do Vets Do Local Anaesthetic Procedures At All?
anniek replied to MolassesLass's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Our greyhound vet does as much as he can with only a local - either injection or cream. A semi ripped back toe nail was "pulled out" recently with just a bit of local cream. Didn't appear to be any pain. IF it was me I would have howled. annieK -
Your Thoughts On Ecopet Meat Loaves...
anniek replied to pampa's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi there, I feed mainly raw, but do use ecopet for brekky now and agian with Innova kibble. I think it is the best of the dog rolls available going by the ingredients - just my opinion.annieK -
ahhhhhhhhhhh missed it today We will be back next week if it's not too hot. Greyhounds and heat without shade do not go well. We will be the ones with a big white / brindle greyhound (snoozing on the grass)and a small black greyhound (twirling around on the lead), - neither of whom seem to think that obedience is for them..... So we will always be in beginners. We haven't been since before Christmas but as we paid for 12 months I guess we will make an effort to go back! AnnieK

I feed both my greys EVO most week days for breakfast (lazy) and raw for dinner and all meals on weekends............. I also am disgusted that I have to go to PP for the Innova food. Have researched a lot of alternatives but just can't bring myself to change from EVO - can anyone tell me if the Dick V P Natural Balance the same as the Natural Balance available in Australia. I have checked the two web sites and main the ingredients are very different. The ingredients on the US web site look great, but the Ozzie one seems to be rice as first ingredient (a big pass for me). Also the packaging is different. Any info please? AnnieK

Bi-Carb of soda - is a lot cheaper than the rocks and you know what's in it. Works very well. As a bonus it helps to neutralise the urine and therefore is an aid in preventing lactic acid build up and cramps in a "running" greyhound. Annie
