Looking For Good Quality Leather Collars
Maxiewolf replied to Tilly's topic in General Dog Discussion
Rogue Royalty do a "Super Tough" Collar like that, its not leather but very unkillable. ETA: Link thingy -
Can we share this on FB? I think what they mean by 'cut their ears off' is meaning not a professional crop but more a hack off at the scull with scissors job...

Attention Gsd, Rotties And Dobe Owners

I'm thinking of getting together with a friend, a local owner of a very ethical pet shop who focuses solely on re-homing rescue.... We are good friends with the local papers here.. I believe a story Reminding Joe Public that it is in fact the LAW to keep dogs on leashes at all times except in designated off-lead parks and that it is the LAW that their dogs be safely contained at all times not permitted to get out and cause trouble, No matter WHAT BREED it is. By asking people to abide by their laws, stand up and be responsible --- there are so many people around here who let their dogs off on the dog parks and beaches etc. knowing full well their dog is a dog aggressive dog but they let it happen anyway, saying that there is No SHAME in making your dog wear a muzzle - that prevention is ALWAYS better than the cure. Essentially its up to the owners of ALL dogs to Stand Up, Be Responsible and Save their own council areas from Breed Specific Legislations that wont work, once the BSL starts - There wont be any money for the things us dog owners WANT like more offlead parks. And wanting to add a bit in their asking the council to help prevent us ending up like victoria - have more rangers out there looking for PEOPLE breaking the laws with their dogs, Asking the council to consider providing obedience groups/puppy classes as part of a subsidy. Registration incentives for the owners of trained dogs etc. All of these actions WILL help prevent dog bites on PEOPLE and PETS. Hopefully a good story with photos can encourage people to 1. Start being responsible. 2. Write to the council asking them to NOT bring in BSL in this region -

Now your thinking right, basicly if you can think of some 'stupid' reason for a dog to be banned. Even if It is a sarcastic one... Only takes one hysterical idiot to get hold of it and whip it up into a frenzy like we have here. This situation is getting insane and spreading like a brushfire T_T -

Don't ever be complacent and think that it "cant" happen or "wont" happen here. Currently Restricted in Ireland - American Pit Bull Terrier; English Bull Terrier; Staffordshire Bull Terrier; Bull Mastiff; Doberman Pinscher; German Shepherd (Alsatian); Rhodesian Ridgeback; Rottweiler; Japanese Akita; Japanese Tosa and to every dog of the type commonly known as a Ban Dog (or Bandog). Singapore - The following dog breeds must be leashed and muzzled at all times when in public - Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd or any Shepherd related dog breeds, Rottweiler and Perro de Presa Canario. The Ukraine has Restricted/banned and or Prohibited up to 80 Breeds of Dogs not limited to but including - The following dog breeds must be leashed and muzzled at all times when in public - Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd or any Shepherd related dog breeds, Rottweiler and Perro de Presa Canario. I would be VERY worried right about now. And I am. I am affraid that my dog I have now may be the last Dobermann I own with any sort of freedom in his life. If the hysteria continues.... I would be very worried if I owned a dog. Period. Why does the government suddenly place no value on the votes or opinions of dog owners? People need to start being afraid of losing their liberties to even OWN a dog. ANY Dog. Its serious stuff, Councils, Local Governments and Major governments need to know that because of the mistakes of the few the Masses are not going to stand around and wait for someone to show up at our doors to tell us what to do with our dogs!! (or any of our pets for that matter cos Its only going to spread) Edited for Spotthedog's up to date information , though I would still hate to see my breed (the dobe) or any of these others currently getting the finger pointed at them to live as a "restricted" Breed... -
With a 4 million human population and with a possible 1 million dog owners/dogs(?) within that...there would have to be bites happening from time to time......but now with that child being bitten and dying a few weeks ago....the media are going to JUMP on every single little thing they hear in regard to someone (or dog) being bitten. I heard something today which is frightening. The source of this information is highly regarded both in the dog world and within Govt's. The Vic Govt is planning on adding MANY other breeds to the list including GSDs Rotties, Dobes...AND they are working towards a total ban on the breeding of all dogs as well as the stopping of dog interests such as in showing dogs...for the eventual outcome of no dogs in Victoria once those who are alive now have died out. This I believe is on paper now and is being kept on the QT from everyone finding out so they can bring it into eventual fruition . I think we all need to band together...every dog owner possible....to fight this! That is the sort of thing that needs to get to the media and leaked out as quickly as possible, I mean why cant we use mass hysteria against mass hysteria? If the whole state of victoria suddenly thought they would loose ownership of THEIR dogs... Though I hope the government realise how insane that is and how they cant afford to destroy a multimillion dollar industry in their state... a ban of dogs all together would affect vets, retailers, manufacturers etc. Coles and Woolworths alone would throw a spaz over not needing to sell dog food or something like that, there is no way the government of victoria could afford the sudden mass exodus of dog owning people not wanting to live in such a state. I know if this sort of insanity keeps up ill be moving COUNTRIES.

Don't see any mention in these reports reminding people that they should not attempt to break up two fighting dogs, course most of us would try to on instinct. But Joe Public doesn't know... I've heard of experienced people who have had to let dogs just about kill each other because they know the risk to their own lives for trying to break up a fight. I know I shouldn't do it but I'm sure if I thought I had a moment of opportunity to break up a fight that was a risk to my dogs life I would try, mind you I got a single bite from a Jack Russell the other day that is deep and bruised not even breaking the skin and its painful as... so any dog bite that actually manages to make you bleed is defiantly serious. But it does prove that its PEOPLE, not controlling their dogs of ANY breed that is the cause of attacks. Has nothing to do with registration, restrictions or regulations. Its as simple as people being neglectful. I certainly hope a Labrador owning family member of mine sees this, as they have been arguing with me over BSL saying that its the dangerous UNregistered dogs causing allllll the problems. (they had an attack at me cos my dog is currently not registered with council (long O/T story)... ahem? does that make him more vicious or something? - My yard is like fort knox now. Theres locks on the gates, my dog cannot jump the fence and is NEVER off lead in public areas not meant for dogs...and most certainly never off lead unsupervised. sooo yeah.) Hope the people who think its Breeds are sitting up and paying attention.

Client Showed Up At The Door With Dog -
Maxiewolf replied to Andisa's topic in General Dog Discussion
I never use unnecessary force, I hate to use muzzles when I can avoid it and I never use the ones that force their mouth shut either. And the funny thing is... these people who I had to comb out their dog (they usually get their dog bathed and brushed out by me every two weeks like clockwork)cos the owner gives in to every little growl and grizzle they make over their feet and their butt (I see its all show and I ignore them, cute little critters. ) - I hadn't seen them for 4 weeks cos they got bumped by this no show the First time, they gave me a weeks notice to rechedule... then they rang back and this no show had taken their spot.. so yeah How Ironic. If this no show lady calls me again Ill be asking her to come in and pay a $80 Deposit before I take another booking at least that's the cost of 2 little dogs if she doesnt show up again. I hate to make her dog suffer cos she messes me around its not fair. -
I shared all the news articles on my face book, and the one from Ninemsn on my Grooming page asking people to flock it to keep it in the top of the news as well. Ill print out one of the posters and put it up at work. I know we are In QLD but you never know how far people will go, I mean I can drive from here to Sydney in 12 hours so its not unreasonable. and we get alot of grey nomad types in our store... they travel around alot and talk alot you never know who they will meet. Lets hope soon someone thinks taking these dogs wasnt such a good idea since everyone is looking and they are returned soon! My friend at work breeds Rotties too...So we cant Imagine what it would be like for you and your babies! Doing all we can to spread the word even from up here! *hugs* from us all!

Client Showed Up At The Door With Dog -
Maxiewolf replied to Andisa's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh yay.. I can ahve a rant. I like this thread. Everyone has one of those days like I had yesterday, you know the ones where you set aside a huge gap in your appointment times because you know you have a big job coming in in this case a Fully matted, Filthy, hardly ever been groomed before LabradorxPoodle that had been in a bording kennel for weeks somewhere and not groomed. So yeah the dog desperatly needs grooming for its own comfort... the first time she was booked in the lady rang me on the day and said she couldn't make it, yeah okay really annoying. Fortunately I was already behind on that day and trying to squeeze in that job would have been hard anyway cos our hydrobath wasnt working and everything was being done by hand. So I reshuffled everyone around on another day (yesterday) to get her in... left a gap of no other bookings between 9am-12pm because it was still going to be a big job and GRRRRRR she didn't flamming turn up... no phone call no nothing, I rang her she didn't answer her phone so Im guessing she knew it was me. If it wasn't for the fact that dog desperatly needs a groom id flat out say no more chances, I couldn't bump anyone else up for the day. So I had 3 hours to twiddle my thumbs.. then the day kind of got worse from there. Im tired of these people that say "oh she is a little funny with her feet" .. little funny like how? Does she BITE? "Oh no she doesn't bite..." (the huge black bruise and teeth marks inflicted on my arm after using the dryer less than 10 mins later would suggest otherwise.) - coudlnt get a muzzle on the dog, she was way too traumatised then i get the "oh the vet puts a muzzle on her she doesnt like it" when they pick her up... So yes thanks for informing me your dog goes from angel to off the rails savage without warning and goes crazy if you try to put a muzzle on her. I wont force a dog to do anything that stresses them out to that point... just makes them worse and worse for next time... I only wish people would just say what their dog is like... Im not going to say I wont do it... I just like to be prepared. So in the midst of that I had a desperate walk In with a border collie who just wanted a quick bath ( almsot got badly bitten by another border the other day who was "funny with his feet" so yeah) So I started to comb some matts out of his fluffy rear.. ANd he is growling... ironicly.. Not at me.. but at the Terror.. er i mean Terrier that bit me... Was an interesting owner and dog confontation... the Terrier that bit me apparently chases and terrorises this random walk in border collie on the beach.. so yeah there was that "Oh... so thats YOUR dog" stand off in the shop.... yeahhh.. Awkward... Then my other two... (very difficult at times) Clients turn up with their two Shih tzu's ... now I tried to bump these two up earlier when the first dog didnt turn up... They said yep thats fine... then called me back 5 mins later saying no they would rather come in at their alloted time because I explained I was going to have to pause halfway through them just to quickly give 2 dogs a quick bath then I could finish them hopefully sooner.... oh no.. nope.. Apparently their dogs where going to be upset that Id have to pause half way through to do the other clients that where still booked for a quick 10 min hydro. (Something to do with if you where in a hairdresser how would you feel if your hair dresser told you to wait a sec while they did something else) - their dogs. They wont get offended. So they turned up at their time, I was still blowdrying the walk in border, that was fine they spent ages talking to the owner of the border collie. So when I got started on their dogs... I find that one of them is seriously matted along where his harness sits which is not normal for this dog.. they didnt want him cut short so i had to comb out the matts... which took well over an hour longer than id hoped... when they where still there at 7pm.. I had to confess I coudlnt work any more and had to leave one of their dogs half groomed and asked them to come back monday... ugh that was so.. soo embaressing and hard. (Lets not mention that I actually have a severely bulging disk in my spine that is pressing on a nerve that is causing me the worst pain ive ever experienced in my life... so yeah by that point I coudlnt stand, i coudlnt bend down to see if my scissoring was straight.. i was physically going to collapse.. so yeah it just wasnt possible.) So yeah If they had come in earlier.. I would have had at least one dog combed out .. and woudlnt have had to spend the extra time and They would have been done by 5pm not 7pm. Rant over... oh I feel better now. Cept for my back.... and my arm.... they still suck. -
Just watched it, first time in months i got the TV to myself without being moved Very moving doco. Loved it.

Frequently Asked Questions – Restricted Breed Dogs
Maxiewolf replied to Sticky's topic in In The News
So essentially does this mean that if you where already an honest considerate owner and already have a dog that's registered as a Pit Bull Cross breed that you are now required to put up the restricted breed notices and follow all the other restricted breed Rules and Regs such as muzzling in public? Regardless of weather your dog has behaved in a dangerous way or not? And if you have a registered Amstaff/Amstaff Cross, looks like a pitbull etc. Are the council suddenly going to be knocking on your door asking you to produce documentation of proof of breed? Dunno it Just doesn't seem safe to have a bull breed at all in Victoria anymore, registered or not.... If I owned an Amstaff with papers Id be making sure that it had a Tag on that said I am an AMSTAFF, ANKC Reg No. 9027409 etc On the collar thats for sure. I mean dogs get out, every now and then by accident or on purpose.... why should only the bull breed people suddenly have to fear that if they don't find their dog before the council does its going to end up dead? If every breed was restricted like that you can bet the roaming dog incidence would drop to almost 0. -
Tell me about it! It happens everywhere way too much! Yesterday I saw a guy walking down the street with two staffy type dogs walking happily with him on a lead no pulling or tugging, just in front of him behind a car (I saw it cos I was in a car driving past) in a drive way out of his line of sight an unrestrained little Schnauzer comes racing out to him and his dogs... I didnt see the aftermath because I was a passenger in a car and coudlnt stop... but yeah I doubt it would have been great and whos fault would it have been? Ohhhh the staffy owner of course for walking such "vicious" dogs out in public. In my own street there isnt a single person who keeps a dog on a lead.... its insane!! with all this dog hype going on how come noone is keeping their dogs on leads and worried about the laws!

Council Shocked As Dog Owners Offer Pit Bulls For Death
Maxiewolf replied to silentchild's topic in In The News
I think what some people may mean about not having the money to register a dog, if you have a restricted breed... or something that can be conceived as a restricted breed it costs way more to register one of those than any other even undesexed breed. In some areas it costs as much to register a Pit Bull Terrier as it does to register a frikking car. Doesnt make it justifiable or right but I can see some peoples reasoning. -
So.. their stupid kneejerk crackdown has done nothing so far but lead to a surge in loose roaming potentially very dangerous dogs that where obviously owned by irresponsible people, because they have simply released them into the public, no attachments what so ever to the dogs.. they probably already looking for their next dog (breed) to replace it with.... Bloody bravo Victoria bravo.

Wish we could sue the media for keeping people in a constant state of hysteria by whipping these events up over the top, before all this started there is very little chance that this incident would even make the news. And FFS STOP bringing up the death of that girl on the end of every dog related story. I'm sure the family don't need this! What will it be next? Every single story with the mention of "Dog" has it tacked on the end as an after thought? "There was a great DOG fundraising day for the DOG shelter... This follows the death of Ayen Chol... 6 months ago... after a pitbullmastiffoodle " blah blah. Again it comes down to the publics complete lack of idea how to handle dogs, he called a strange dog over to pat it? And if it was a staffy type dog chances are it was so excited to see him that he didnt infact get bitten he probably got whacked with the tooth in mid excited head butt. Or It was an excited bite, if the dog wanted to attack him he would have had more than a hole in his lip thats for sure. Im over what the times have now become.
-
Link EtA.: Thanks GT , ive updated the link to the non mobile version of the site now. *sigh* and again with the adding on of that poor girl, Im sure her family are going to want her death brought up every time any dog bite related story comes up... Are we going to have this after a years worth of dog stories "..this follows the attack on Ayen 12 months ago.." very sad. And at whoever brought this dog to the game and let it off! How stupid are people really! Couldn't Identify the breed? probably means that it wasn't a "pit bull" and not something that could be sensationalised. Quite likely to have been a herding breed that wanted to chase and nip at a whole bunch of people running around like just about any overly excited off lead dog untrained of course. Such stupid people... Good ont he kids for carrying on and still playing their game though! Hope they are okay and who ever owns the dog gets punished.

I would be going for the Jafco one, the extra money for the quality for one thing, its clear... it doesnt make your dog look like a scarey hannibal lecter dog... and it sounds like he is already getting judged just by his appearance already. Going to invest in a Jafco one for my dobe, he spends time with me at work... and with dogs and people coming in and out all the time... Id rather be safe than sorry (for what other dogs might do to him not the other way around...). And if you get the muzzle from K9-Pro you get the program with it to teach him to enjoy wearing it. ETA: Silly vet for shoving it on him then stressing him out more... now you have to untrain him to hate the muzzle and the vet.
-
Nine MSN Heres a bit more updated link as well, Poor puggy Grr stop putting the mention of the poor girl in Victoria on the bottom of every dog related story that comes up!! Its trivialising the death of that child and making it ridiculous.... *annoyed* A little dog that got killed by a much larger dog that "got away" from its owner should not have the death of a child tacked on the end of it. If that attack on the child had not have happend you can bet this story probably would not have even Seen the news. eta: meant to add - How exactly did the dog get away from the owner? what where the circumstances? was the owner (of the pug)hurt? Darn Swiss cheese reporting... full of frikking holes.

Poll On Yahoo - Should Rottweilers Be Outlawed In Australia
Maxiewolf replied to TrinaJ's topic in In The News
Well now that didn't take long did it. Just proves how quickly the stupidity spreads like a brushfire... Voted No. Heh and A Lab owner in my family says I got nothing to worry about with my dobe.. yeah RIGHT. -
Just proves that BSL doesn't work. And wont work. That its down to every individual dog/owner. Look at the stuff strewn in that yard. Obviously noone cares if the dog or a child hurts themselves on any of it. It looks like quite a solid fence. So how did the dog escape the yard? Did it jump? Was it let out? Why are these news reports so selective... Don't let the Truth get in the way of a good story. Thank goodness someone was there to contain the dog in this case, I hope someone is taking good care of these kids... they need to be also offered counselling as soon as possible so they don't develop a life long fear of dogs.

When it was a very real possibility that my parents where going to sell the family home after seperation, I made my dad (I was alot younger than I am now of course.) Dig up my first dog, a mini dachi, there was not much left she had been in the ground for about 12 months... she was buried in a cane basket with a pillow case over the top. So the only way to find her after being dug up was to find the basket and the case there was very little left but bones. He put those remains in a plastic bag and Pets at Peace picked up the bag and cremated them at a reduced charge. Still paid the same for the urn etc. I know what it feels like to not want to leave a dog behind like that. I have all my dogs cremated now (Ive got 4 urns so far in my room... when i have enough ashes im getting them made into a carbon based diamond least then they will all be with me one day when im a crazy old dog lady and my kids are fighting over the diamond least i know they will always be with me or my family ;) ) Though after several years I woudlnt like to try and find the remains to be exhumed. Edit: I would like to add that only 3 of those urns are mine. 1 old age, 1 accident, 1 illness and 1 inherited dead dog, yes.. I was left my grandads dachshunds ashes. In case someone was thinking i'm like a serial dog killer or something like that >_>

Owning a dangerous dog needs to start being painted publicly as stupid and irresponsible as drink driving, speeding etc. Start putting fully graphic ads on television for the consequences of what happens. Instead of being thought of as a "Bloody Legend" for your big tough dog... people need to start thinking your a "Bloody Idiot". Take the status symbol out of the dog. Portray owning these uncontrollable dogs as an unattractive thing socially, portray having a good well behaved trained dog as a Fun, Family and community thing and it will begin to deter these bogan morons from doing this with ANY breed of dog they can get their hands on, and it will help ALL dog ownership. Make it a public embarrassment to have a vicious, untrained dog and noone will want to be seen that way. And apply hard punishments to people who let this happen - euthanase the dog, im sorry but a dog that has killed or viciously maimed with no good reason (unprovoked or illness etc.) should not have resources wasted on it when there are thousands of dogs with good sound temperaments dying in shelters. Punish the people with Harsher fines, Jail time, Losing their vehicles, losing access to centrelink payments, public transport and Any other thing that might be considered a "Liberty" they have deprived someone else of their family memeber, or given someone a traumatic experiance to last a life time... then this is the kind of punishment that should be inflicted on them... And if they are given community service? Fine make it in the RSPCA or somewhere where they have to be forced to help animals and do some good. Banning breeds/dogs/etc will NEVER stop this kind of thing from happening. It is sad and it is tragic. I cant imagine how these people feel.
