  1. I don't know where he's meeting these 'timid' Borders They are a breed that 90% of the time try to eat something while being groomed (me or the dryer) - same when I vet nursed. My brothers Border bit me on the face a few years ago for doing exactly what that little girl did - I got in his face and he didn't like it. My fault completely but it's something common in the breed - they don't mind having a little nip here and there. Before the BC lovers start screaming I grew up with Borders as working dogs so feel entitled to have my opinion. When you get a good one they are the most awesome dogs, but they 'aint a dog I would ever let my child pat or that I don't treat with a healthy respect. There's no breed I would advise anyone pat without knowing the dog and speaking to the owner. I've been attacked by 3 breeds - chihuahua's, boxers and labradors (all whilst I was a young child) and yet none of those breeds are ever targeted by bsl... And yet when I was a kid, if I was bitten for approaching a strange dog, it was my fault and there was no talk of punishing the dog. I don't know why owners let their dogs get into uncomfortable and dangerous situations - which is what happened here. Here here... when ever I had a dog go at me when I was a kid It was always because I was not doing as my parents had said ie. dont touch strange dogs. And the first question that was always asked if ever i got into an incident with a dog or any animal for that matter was "what did you do to them?" I know this child was 3, but clearly some where she "learned" to go up to dogs and hug them - either a family members dog or a friends dog has let her do this and she thought it was okay. My dads neighbours little girl.. about the same age would do the same thing to Brutus, love him and hug him and pat him and lean agaisnt him etc.. and Brutus being a very tolerant child loving dog would just stand there and let her (She was never in danger of hurting him because she was never left al9one to do this of course). And I always always always stressed to the neighbour to tell his little girl to NEVER do that sort of thing to any dog she didn't know, because she loves dogs so much ... I could just see it happening with some other dog... and a girl that has no fear of a 40kilo dog like Brutus and getting down to his level... you could see where this could happen. Im not about to make her afraid of MY dog or any dog for that matter.. I just really hope the parents DO heed what I say that they must Teach their kids that not Every dog is friendly and wants you to hug them etc.
  2. Surgery For Dog Bite Girl My thoughts: Speaking as a dog groomer, of the 3 Border Collies I groomed last month - two of them tried to attack me, both of them would have succeeded if they were not wearing a muzzle - Both dogs "Oh he's never done anything like that before" "oh that's so strange" type owners. So needless to say Im a little collie paranoid at the moment, mind you the 3rd one was an absolute buddy of a dog and was awesome. Lots of things here concern me - Another unrestrained frikking dog allowed to wander into someone's yard, owner too far away to do a darn thing about it. Unsupervised children (yes okay they where in their front yard but I hardly think a 12 year old is good supervision for a 3 year old) who obviously have never been taught any dog safety by their parents - they patted a strange dog that approached them, got down face level and hugged a dog who must have felt crowded or threatened by such an action by a strange person. Didn't ask the owner if they could pat the dog etc. Its being called a "mauling", to me the poor girls injury looks like a single fear "bite" unfortunately right on her face and right in the wrong spot, I was bitten hard and fast by a jack russell on my arm a few weeks ago.. the wound looked exactly like that but since I'm not a 3 year old and it was on my arm not my face... That poor little girl is now probably going to have a very severe fear of dogs unless she is worked with caringly to help her through this, and if her parents didn't think to teach either child about the dangers of strange dogs before I hate to think how that's going to happen now. All In all I don't believe this particular dog deserves death, due to its irresponsible owner the dog was obviously put in a situation that led to a fear bite, dog needs a behaviourist, owner needs a kick up the arse, and the poor girl needs some good dog therapy. Edited - title went funny for some reason. Fixed.
  3. I think that there should be some instance as well where if its proven that it was a once off occorance due to say a fence down, sudden fright by loud noises such as fireworks or thunder etc then it shouldn't apply. If it was something like a three strikes policy.. well you have plenty of time to Fix the "broken fence" , make sure your gates have locks on them. make sure your dog is restrained etc etc... and if after all that you still cant keep your dog in... don't really see a problem.
  4. Yep definatly a Gympie moment..... ;)Very Very Lucky Dog .though i wonder how the heck you would be so absorbed you wouldnt notice a window in your car going down or one of your dogs flying out the window! I mean if you cant notice that going on in your own car... you cant be a very safe driver imo
  5. So I surpose that you dont want to hear that my 40kg Brutus, and my tiger clawed Maine Coon cat both beleive that ordinary cloth fly screen is a supernatural forcefeild of unspeakable force that should not even be messed with guess they are always right... its always cheaper to get the expensive stuff first Aww but isnt she the picture of innocence with those big blue eyes ^_^
  6. I work in Noosa Heads, I printed this article out and put it on the notice board in the shopping center here with the heading that Someone Knows Who did this and asking for it to be reported. Got lots of friends who live around here so I've been sharing it every couple of days on my face book. Scares me that whoever did this is quite likely a local... id hate to think that ive served this person, much less spoken to such a horrible human being and not known.
  7. Oh I feel for you so badly! We have a very nasty dog over our back fence, Brutus doesn't bark at him (so far) But this dog can obviously see us and Brutus in the yard, we just cant see him... he has a very vicious bark and he growls and charges. I've already seen my side neighbors and explained its not Brutus doing the barking (He hasn't been with us for a while and I don't want people suddenly thinking he is a barker), in fact we have been standing there talking while Brutus is all quiet minding his own business while this dog at the back is going off its brain... it does it all the time. I just don't understand how people can let their dogs bark and carry on like that... I mean even if you don't care that its annoying others surely it would annoy you at some stage? I would absolutely try the thin plywood on the fence (since its now a wooden fence..... ) it can be temporarily attached quick and easy with some brad nails. If there was no problem before when the other dog couldn't see through, hopefully it will stop again once the visual stimuli is taken away. Best of luck.
  8. Afraid to take my dog to the north shore now, the laying of these baits has been known to be done RIGHT on peoples boundaries. The sign tells people to keep their pets contained while the program is in affect. Thats okay provided a wild animal doesn't move the bait in the first place, its not species specific... so one thing eats it .. like a native rat for example.. then it goes on from there. And the "wild dogs" on the north shore are hardly a threat to anything... there's nothing big enough over there to kill anything. Its not because of the "wildlife" damage, its because of the 'graziers' and peoples fear the wild dogs will harm their children. But due to unpleasant events in the past when the residents complained about it... noone who lives over there and is agaisnt it is willing to speak up. bad bad all round. I dont live over there but spend a bit of time there and am not happy about it.
  9. OMG thats horrible, I know exactly where that is... its just up the road from where I live. I wonder what happened to the dogs body... if theres some chance that he may have been microchipped once upon a time... maybe it would be possible to find this a$$. Ill be spreading and sharing.... Someone must know who this person is. :mad
  10. Only when Im actually walking with my Fiance, took Brutus for a walk yesterday with his new bling diamonte collar and lead on too... that also tends to stop people assuming he isnt my dog lol ... generally I think people assume the dog belongs to who ever is holding it. When Im doing grooming it is surprising how many of the cutsie little fluffies are the "Husbands" Dog lol. Groomed two Corgi's yesterday and the wife came in to pay, when her husband came in she gave the leashes to him "Here take your Corgi's Dear" So I guess it works both ways, what used to always get me was my CAR! When I had a huge dark coloured old 4wd with the huge tyres and bullbar on it "Is that your boyfriends car?" Solution: Covered the dash in all the cutsie little dog toys i had in my collection. Questions stopped after that.
  11. Its all well and good to say the irresponsible owners brought this on, personally I think a huge amount of the fault/blame should be falling on the councils themselves... so many of these attacks on humans and animals by all these dogs would have been minimalised if their darn rangers where out doing their jobs in the first place. Remember once upon a time you where scared if your dog got out the "Ranger would git em?" The rangers just needed to be walking around Issuing more in the spot fines for unregistered dogs, off-lead dogs in public places, poorly contained, or controled animals etc etc.... The whole mess has come about by people not being afraid to do the WRONG thing anymore. The poor bully breeds are just the "easiest" target.... the irrisponsible owners arent suffering here, they are already trolling for their next breed. And a national legislation like this? Its happening in one state and Im already nearly ashamed to be living in this country... cant belive we let this happen in our "lucky" country...
  12. Hey what would you improve in a doberman? erect ears? :D Exactly the same project as here, the choice to have a long or naturally bobbed tail. Not a huge fan of the Erect ear. And Erect ears on these breeds aren't just a pointed ear... they are "shaped" I've yet to see a pointed ear on any breed look like the kind of ear a crop job produces. ETA: Erect Ears? Hmmmm no me no think so. Poor boy.
  13. Love these articles, And I fully support it, and to be honest... I don't think we ever should "stop" developing our breeds. I know that breeding to the standards is one thing, but our beloved breeds where developed by generations of picking the desirable traits. I really think more showcasing of this type of thing needs to be done. All these ByB's who think slapping two dogs together and calling it "breed-of-stupidname" have nothing on real DESIGN! Would love to see someone take up this kind of project in dobermann's, and also I mean look at the lovely work of the Dalmatians which was done purely for health. Love genetics ^_^
  14. The old owner also doesn't have legal right to step onto the property and "take" the dog anyway. You friend can simply refuse to give the dog back until the old owner produces evidence that the dog is hers, or a court order demanding its return. And If the old owner wants to spend that kind of money, then go forward with the invoice for caring for the dog every day for 12 months.
  15. I feel your frustration, ugh had some customers bring me in a Shihtzu in heat to be groomed the other day the "want to get a litter out of her" kind grrrr why are there so many of these people!? The only foolproof thing you coudl probably do to keep her from dogs is to keep her crated indoors. and maybe not walk her out and about too much... otherwise just encouraging more neighbourhood dogs to roam looking for the bitch
  16. My Problems with coat colours more stem from losses.... eg. I get teary when ever I see a dapple/merle dog. I can Just cope with it now on another breed, but I could not have another dog the same breed and colour. Just too upsetting. And the same for dobes, I lost a Brown and Tan dachshund, I think I had just come to the point where I could probably cope with a Dobermann that colour... but not another Dachie (fortunatly Dachshunds come in so many colours in 20 years of having them I never had to have the same colour twice. ) Other than that deep down, except for show purposes.... colour isnt really that important. Except I guess on the basis of a really lightly pigmented dog around the face and sun concerns or something like that when living up here.
  17. I had a mini dachy once who was quite an avid climber... Obviously given his proportions ladders where out of his physical capability but he most certainly did try. But For everything else he would hop from object to object to get to the highest point like a cat. It was not uncommon to walk into a room and find him up somewhere a dog shouldn't be like on a bookshelf or something. Eventually stuff had to be rearranged to stop him from magyvering his way to the highest vantage points. What do you mean they cant hold a paint brush? theirs a perfectly good paintbrush already attached to the rear end! Just add paint!
  18. Feel so sorry for poor Honey! Next time you see a friendly Dally don't forget to encourage her that not all white spotty dogs are out to get her! I've had to work so much with Brutus cos he has been attacked by two lab brothers... and Is convinced even now that if its yellow, and a dog... its out to get him. I think the more of us responsible dog owners who adopt a zero tolerance on unrestrained dogs that rush or attack ours... the better.. If It happens once I say report it straight away, chances are your not the first person its happened to... Be the first to report it. Quicker people are made accountable for their dogs actions then the less attacks there will be on people and dogs! And we are nearly all armed with Camera/Video phones these days... Its amazing how many people start doing the right thing if they even THINK you got it on video.
  19. I tell you after 20 years of owning Dachshunds then switching to a Dobe.... I totally know how that feels lol. My cat escaped the house once, brutus had never seen a cat... the two of them ran up to one another and where like "Whoah... what are you?" Dachshund? Fluffy Cat that Runs? nuh uh. Instincts are amazing.
  20. He is a doofy sook. (dont let that fool you he still pulls like a freight train.) I wish I had had my camera when he was crawling along the ground to say hello to two mini dachshunds (same colour as him) on the beach. It was hilarious. But yep... I Had Dachshunds for 20 Years.... and Ill take my big submissive sook over little tenacious dachies with 10 foot tall and invincible syndrome anyday!
  21. I think being the one with the submissive dog is better, If he where to "stand his ground" its much more likely to lead to an altercation. I'm very happy that Brutus is submissive for his size. He gets down on his belly and crawls to smaller dogs..
  22. Nope I don't think you where too harsh. I know that If I where to ever get to the point of being a breeder Id want to keep my pups out of the BYB 'trade' and the only way unfortunately to do that is to be responsible for your own actions and everyone else's. You had options there for responsible people to obtain an entire pup. ie. to show, to be a registered breeder. So they certainly didn't have all avenues closed to them, to me a response like that means they already had plans for the pup. And defiantly not in the interests of the breed. Though I do like the idea of offering them help with becoming responsible breeders, that way if they do not respond with interest well its a pretty quick way to weed out the byb's. I thinkt here is still a stigma that people think if they have "just one litter" that they are Not ByB's or Puppy farmers etc. Good On you for being a Responsible Breeder IMO.
  23.   That makes me feel there is still hope left for my own sanity! ;)
