  1. So many of these off leash problem threads, the problems of people being rushed by dogs with the "He/She just wants to say Hi" excuse is epidemic. I have a big strong dog, an entire male and I don't let him off lead to do his own thing, he is friendly and more often than not does just want to play.. But his play could easily damage another person or dog so I don't let him do it. And 95% of Dogs that Rush up to him and want to play "Dont" ... little dogs seem to hate him with a passion and are often snarling balls of fluff by time they get to him. ' People just seem to forget that it is the Law of 99% of Councils that Pet dogs be ON A LEAD in Public areas unless otherwise signposted. You have just as much right to walk somewhere with your dog on a lead without being accosted as you would expect your child to be able to walk somewhere in peace without forcing them to interact with someone they may not want to. I really think more councils should be running a more active message to encourage people to do the right thing and walk their dogs on a LEAD. "NO matter your Breed - It belongs on a lead!" Just as K9Pro Steve was saying in his blog in addition to all this, how many dogs are killed/injured by cars etc because their owners thought it was safe for them to be off lead on the footpath?
  2. Yep... know what that's like, we shortcut through a park when going to the shops that's clearly marked "Dog's Must Be on Leads" yet still walk through this park and have to contend with an over excited Dobe being accosted by SWF's off lead and out of control, in the children's playground area (which although not signed is council law). Very Annoying when you abide by the rules and regs yourself.
  3. Poor Sarge, I imagine that even if he was supervised, the dog may have just jumped the fence again and grabbed him, he had already been attacked - seconds may have been all it took. The husky is a dangerous risk. What if there was a child in the backyard? How dare a dog be allowed to go into other peoples yards not once but TWICE and kill other animals. Its dangerous. Its a menace. The irresponsible owners should be banned from owning dogs and have the Husky PTS - So what if it can be "Rehabed" you would never be able to trust that dog again 100% its not safe or responsible to re-home it unless you could know it was going to be housed as a dangerous dog - which is no life for a husky. It should be PTS for its own good. Horible situation for all involved - caused by what? Arrogance? Lazyness? Sheer bloody stupidity? (Edited to add - Thought the husky was supposed to be on a chain? Perhaps that's why it was thought to be safe to let Sarge out? - Personally i believe its a disgrace that someone has to supervise their dog in their own back yard to make sure its not attacked by another dog! )
  4. Very terrible for these poor people... Also irrelevant if their dogs where not registered... This stupid BSL That says this can happen to dogs based on how they look... as opposed to any other dog that is found to be unregistered... you pay the fine for having an unregistered dog, you register the dog and you get your dog back. Not have them killed when you try to do the RIGHT THING.
  5. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/pets/ci_20585152/great-dane-show-dog-stolen-near-scotts-valley SCOTTS VALLEY - A Great Dane valued at $27,000 was reported stolen from a recreational vehicle outside Scotts Valley on Tuesday. Knight, a 175-pound, 18-month-old male dog headed for the show ring is believed to have been taken from the 2400 block of El Rancho Drive, said Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy April Skalland. The dog had been bred for shows, but it had not yet been shown, said his owner, Naud Robinson. Robinson, 60, said he had barely slept since the dog disappeared. "We were tied at the hip. We did everything together," said Robinson. He had been living in the motor home with Knight and Lily, a female Great Dane. Robinson said he is from Monterey but had been living on the property temporarily for a construction job. Robinson said he was at the grocery store when he believed the dog was stolen. "It was just so hot (Tuesday) that I thought he'd be fine for an hour. I never thought for a second he'd be taken," Robinson said. Knight was in the RV behind a gate and a roll-up door that was unlocked in case of emergency. Robinson said someone likely entered through the roll-up door. It was not possible for the dog to escape, he said. Robinson's other dog, Lily, was not taken from the RV nor were other electronics and valuables. Robinson bought Knight from a breeder in Australia for $27,000. The dog is not insured. He'd planned to show the dog and use it in his breeding program. Knight is black and white and about 3 feet tall. He is microchipped for identification but was not wearing a collar. The dog's full name is Riverwood's Venustus Knight. He is registered with the American Kennel Club. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to call sheriff's dispatch at 471-1121 or the anonymous tip line at 454-2847. Follow Sentinel reporter Stephen Baxter on Twitter @sbaxter_sc Stolen Dane, Still not recovered I realise the story is a month old, but I found the news article just now by following a lost poster on facebook this morning. Thoughtit might be relevant since he came from an Australian breeder, lets hope his distinctive look gets him found.
  6. Dog attack reference to desexing = stupid, unessential and pointless. And how will they regulate this? It already costs so much more to register an entire dog unless your a member of a Canine Association anyway, so again you will just have a bunch of people choosing not to register their dogs and dodge the fees... so until the council spend the money on someone going door to door and checking every dog.. what's the point exactly? My Dogs entire, he doesn't roam, he isn't aggressive, and I'm not a backyard breeder. I don't see why I should have to alter my dog because of the irresponsible people. Its right up there with people who are loosing their bully breeds because of BSL. We already know it doesn't work. There should be more incentive for people to register their dogs for starters.... give more rewards for being responsible, not more punishments and rules because you get caught up in the net that's trying to scoop up the rotten apples.
  7. I think I would be honest about it, I mean there are also some kennels out there who are fantastic and some who are not. Admittedly settling a puppy into this routine could be hard, but it does have a companion as a "constant" stability. I don't think a FIFO worker having a dog is any worse than someone who has a dog and sticks them in doggie daycare all day every day from 9-5. At least when a FIFO worker is Home, they are home... not going to work all over again. Hard decision, but I think honesty would be more appreciated.
  8. Hmm I dunno, Lol Could you Imagine a Tibetan Mastiff with that haircut? I know I woudln't go in then!
  9. I think I'm a little bit of a snob. Lol. Our family has had pure-bred/pedigree dogs from day dot, I've still got papers for the first family Dachshund from over 30 years ago. The dog is long gone but the connection is still there, I don't believe myself a snob because I like to know what I'm getting - Im no more of a snob than someone who insists on buying the same brand of TV, or car or food because i like consistancy. I like to know what Im getting. Sure each dog has its own quirky traits, but a Dachshund is a Dachshund. A Dobermann Is a Dobermann. etc etc. I know that in 10-15 years time that if i Dicide i want another dog of a particular type, ive only got to go back to my papers collection and start looking for a breeder who is currently breeding from the same or similar stock. I feel sorry for the dogs in the shelters, but each of those dogs has their perfect human out there, just like every human has a perfect dog out there... My perfect dog just happens to be the breed I choose, from a breeder I choose that I raise when and how I want. Besides....Me a Snob? Im not the one trying to cart my little crossbreedoodle around in a hand bag because my dog is too good to walk on the ground. I think the DD people are the snobs these days.
  10. I really hope it was a stray because it doesnt sound like they have any intentions of trying to see if someone was just out in their backyard with their new pup and then experianced the horror of watching it get taken by a hawk and having no idea whats happened to it.. "god" has funny ways of deciding who needs a puppy >_>
  11. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8468741/hawk-drops-puppy-from-sky I certainly hope the poor puppy was a stray and not someone's pet. Lucky pup.
  12. Horrible and hangs around for so long! I get concerned when I see people walking obviously quite young puppies out and about I just wince and hope they are vaccinated and that its taken and the dogs have a good immune system. >_< so many "joe publics" just dont realise how horrible and serious parvo is.
  13. So the owners did not want to take him back? Sounds to me like they just took his ID off and let him go. Poor guy, he is so lucky that you happened to be on that bus TC!

  15. I think as opposed to paying more Bond for my pets I think over all Id actually be happier to pay $5 - $20 more per week for the house, more like a pet "levy" rather than a pet bond.. coming up with extra bond at the beginning is usually hard enough when your trying to move, the LL can put that towards the premiums of their insurance should the pets damage anything. Really If you start coming up with extra fees for pets, Id be wondering what was next? a Kids bond? a Teenager bond? But yeah Id pay the extra (and usually do anyway) to get a house that would take my dog, I was basicly thrown out of a house because of a house mate not paying rent, I had to pay a fortune to board my dog for weeks because I was homeless and had to find a way to get Brutus to Dad's house in NSW till I got another place to live. Unfortunately because I was literally living in a caravan park of no fixed address I had to take what I could get which was a no pets house, so Brutus stayed with dad for nearly 2 years still I could move again. But hell or high water would have had to come before I would have dumped him at the POUND. We would have BOTH lived in the car if we had to!
  16. Needs to be more serious punishment, even if it's a "First offence" a Human doesn't get away with attacking another human just because it was a first offence, I cant walk over and punch some random person in the face cos they are bugging me then hope to get away with it. And I'm sure if there was some sort of compounding fine system for dogs that escaped, roamed or attacked people would be taking more precautions to keep their dogs contained, on leash and trained! If the fine for your dogs "First Escape" was $250, second time $500, third time $1000 ... you'd soon be making sure your dog was secure wouldn't you. Then if they started adding things like, Dog Was caught Roaming for the First time $250, Dog Chased or Menaced someone while it was out Add another $150, Dog Bit or Killed another animal while it was out double it, etc etc. Serious fines and Serious enforcement's will work better then any other stupid BSL Laws. Its so sad to hear about all these dogs that get out for the "first time" and the damage they do, I know if my dog somehow got out my order of concern would be - Him getting hit by a car, getting stolen, getting attacked by another animal or person = then getting picked up by the council!! It doesn't occur to me to think OMG my dog got out i hope HE doesn't bite someone! Surely people should have some indication that if their dog got out they would be dangerous? If they bark aggressively at the fences when people pass? Incidents in their own home? I dunno its a failing situation anyway you look at it and its so sad for these people and their innocent animals that seem to just be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  17. It really bugs me that I don't let my dobermann run up to other people or their dogs cos he is an uncoordinated clutz who has no idea what goes on below his chin... I dont let my dog off where its says dogs must be on lead.... I would like to say I would have told the people with the Weim... "he is NOT being friendly, he is pleasing him self and Ignoring YOU - So YOU come get him!" I usually hold Brutus tight, and change direction and I dont indulge either dogs wants. One, don't want to reward Brutus for tugging and fussing to get to the other dog, and I don't want to reward the other dog for running off like a loon and ignoring a recall (since the owners obviously dont think this way.) When I had dogs that where less trample proof like my dachies, Id always stand between and give the agressive Get away shout at a bounding dog, regardless of how "friendly" they are, and though Dachies aren't trample proof they usually hated their space being invaded by anything other than... more dachshunds. I hope Dukes okay, and that he recovers emotionally.. don't worry too much about your reactions this time, cant undo it... Just have to make plans for the next time which hopefully wont happen! :)
  18. Am I too late to suggest? I love this artwork!! http://www.mccartneysdogs.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=4445 ^_^ so cute. If I ever open a cafe Ill have heaps of these!
  19. Serious Stuff.... Makes Hungary a very round peg in a square hole bang in the middle of the EU in the way of the dog world. Hungary isn't in a position either to lose that kind of money by loosing that show. Husband just asked did I want to go to the show... I'm like hmm Doesn't look like it will be there to go to >_>
  20. Czechoslovakian Wolfdog. - Already got the Hungarian relatives onside to look after the puppy, help with the vet work etc for us when Its time for us to go over there for a visit in a few years lol. So I'm kind of there with the dream, So even if we need to get one from another country like Germany its doable. Soon as I convince my hubby to let me spend the $$ on the Dog(s) that is. Till then Next more Possible Dream breed will be a Weimeraner or Great Dane.
  21. Theirs two "Labrawhatsits" (i love that) That hang over a balcony and bark and bark and bark everytime we walk past... would drive me absolutely nuts, they are sandy coloured and have the biggest scruffiest coats out. I say yeah go with a Standard poodle... and just let the hair grow! Noone says they have to have totally shaved feet and face, they can just have their eyes tidied and under their pads done like a spaniel. I swear so many people believe their hair "Grows" looking like a "Poodley" cut... not that they have to be MADE look that way! Least with the Poodle you KNOW its not going to shed, you KNOW they will be smart, you KNOW what the temperament will be like. You should KNOW the health history of the pup of course depends on the breeder. Im sure there are plenty of Standard and Mini Poodle breeders out there who would rather get their breed out there to someone and restore this weird tarnished image the "Öodle" has created of the "Poodle" then have yet another misinformed person running around with another mixeruper thats surposedly "Better" then the dogs it was made from. Good Luck with your convincing! Heck if I can Convince my macho Russian husband that I want a Red Standard poodle - im sure your friend can win lol!
  22. Might Go to the Noosaville one, not huge on giving money to RSPCA when id rather support other rescues... But Brutus would soak up the people and dog attention like a sponge.. i think hed enjoy the day.
  23. I don't think anything works better than a name and shame policy, it hurts their reputation and their bottom line way worse than a little fine. Imagine if someone set up a Facebook or a twitter group repeating all the names of Places, Companies etc who refuse Guide and Assistance dogs, soon you'd have business being afraid to be on this public list because it would come up in Google searches etc, so when someones looking for a place to stay... the last thing they want is their name to come up on a "These people Don't like Guide Dogs!" list. ETA: Actually, Since it is LAW, and it is ILLEGAL to refuse entry, ask a person to leave etc. Because of their Guide Dog then I would be promoting that People faced with this situation simply stand there and go "That's Fine, I'm calling the Police because your breaking the law."
