I almost shed a tear over this too! I'm so Glad you got her back!! I posted her event on our business facebook page to highlight that people shoudlnt keep pets they just find! they dont think of the heart ache it causes people!

I dunno, I still think the best thing for keeping people away from a dog is a muzzle, might not work on loose dogs - I had a DA dog with us for a while and rather than take the risk of her biting another dog loose or otherwise I put a muzzle on her, people would trip over themselves to get away from her. And they certainly didn't stop to ask why she was wearing it. You could stick a bright neon sign on your dog saying "DON'T TOUCH ME!!" - and people would still pat and ask why they cant touch, or would still let their dogs near and be irresponsible. Its a preventive... unfortunately it only works on responsible educated dog familiar folk.

Oh my gosh I'm glad I'm not alone! Been training Brutus for loose lead walking, and other things... Husband takes him for a walk and because he "Feels sorry"for the dog he lets him do what ever he likes! Ack! SO here I go having to retrain him for the first 10 mins of every walk so he doesn't pull my arm off. So hard to get the OH's to listen at times! Especially when I have a bad back and really cant afford to LET the dog pull me! hence the training.. before it was okay.. I could hold him back but now I cant.

Friends of ours just got a Renault Kangoo, it would be great fitted out as a doggie car. Has sliding doors on both sides if I recall (i think these are an option). and a huge amount of space in the back. Diesel one is very economical. And has alot of space in the drivers section too... but it is only a 2 seater job really.

Defiantly wouldn't encourage - in the home feeding your dog from the table encourages them to beg at the table which on its own is really annoying... trying to eat with *the eyes*, if I want to give the dog something from the table - he has to wait till we are done with our meal (provided he wasn't doing the begging mooching please give me some thing) - Ill get up and put it on the floor or in his bowl when we are done with our meal. And he certainly wouldn't be getting coffee! - and then there is the subject of this was in public, using a restaurants utensils... you HOPE they are washed really well. (well i am more scared of catching something from a human than a dog!) A bit of dog slobber mightn't bother me - but this woman is just vindicating all of those anti dog in outdoor eating area people. We try to do the right thing, have a quiet dog that doesn't disturb anyone else, but most certainly shouldn't be at the table in a cafe. A public picnic table is another matter all together, when its my food my stuff and im not invading someone elses spot then i dont see the problem - its not like the council is steam disinfecting those tables or removing the bird poop daily.

Yeah I was gonna say? Why the heck did he drag the poor dog up there so unprepared in the first place? I mean you woudln't expect a person to hike up there in bare feet, some climber if he doesn't know such things as dog boots exist for a reason! I hope he gets booked, and I hope the rescuers get to keep her.

The thing that apauls me the most, is if you watch some of the aftermath videos (by following the sources) - is the dog is just left lying there bleeding, for what seems like quite a while, noone even throws a towel or a blanket on it, or makes any attempt to stop her from bleeding - it truly is amazing she survived at all. And, once the dog threat was removed - from the looks of the video, the guy is still there just lying on the ground - no paramedics or anyone even moving him into a recovery position or anything. So if shooting the dog was nessisary to give him medical attention then why not be giving it? If they where in so little hurry to do something for him then the police should have focused more on keeping people away from the dog (and not let the "Animal Expert" go in and rile her up even more) they should have protected the public and moved everyone back and waited for animal control if they where in no hurry to rush over and help the guy as soon as the dog was subdued. I do feel sorry for the dog, the owner - who rescued her from an abusive situation, showered the dog with love and care (actually she looks very fit and healthy for a "street dog") - so essentially he created this extreemly protective dog, may have been a whole different story too if he had her on a leash, if he does get her back I hope it is enforced that she needs to wear a muzzle if is passing out is frequent.

Ill try to get another lot in then, they come in a bulk pack so I cant really choose what sizes I get, But I'm sure the 80cm length ones could be cut a bit shorter if needed...or even used as a blanket its about keeping warm not a fashion statement ~_^ -

How Big are the Big dogs? I might have a couple of 70cm & 80cm Coats I can send. Haven't got anything smaller unfortunately. -
Interesting point of view that people are not willing to pay $1000 for a pet? Brutus was $1200 6 years ago, and was sold as a show quality pup... Mind you he has never been shown and therefore he is a $1200 pet, I've paid $1000 + for pet Dachshunds before, and alot of pet shops sell their cross whatever's or purebreds for well over $1000 ... Its quite sad that the only viable option they saw was to cull them, I know if someone said to me if your willing to handraise this merle dane pup yourself you can have it for its portion of the vet fees its cost me already I know Id take on that responsibility... not sure many others would though.

Seems to be alot of Dobermanns about that can not swim? Brutus can't swim. He will only go into water if it is flat calm and he can stand on the bottom, beyond that he cant. He jumped into a pool when I was in there, scratched me to bits as I rescued him and pushed him out of the water, legs flailing everywhere but he was sinking none the less. My grandads dobe couldnt swim either, he ran off the edge of a dock and dove straight into the water after my grandad who was in a boat, he ended up having to jump in and save him, he also fell into a deep tidal rock pool and had to be rescued. So that's 2 dobes in the family that cant swim, never had a problem with any of the 6 Dachshunds we had over the years they could all swim without hassle.

As far as I can see in the article the dog survived the shooting and is at an animal hostel. Surprisingly rare outcome.

With reading the comments there saying they should have tasered the dog, would it have stopped the dog? And I thought it was pretty well established that spraying dogs with pepper spray / mace only gets them more upset? I understand that its hard for a police officer to carry a catch pole, and a tranquilliser may not act fast enough to subdue a very overly aroused/agressive/excited/scared dog... Im sure if you can train an officer to aim down, shoot a dog moving at that speed and not miss then surely some kind of weapon like a non lethal net gun could be perscribed in any situation involving an animal? http://spykidtoys.com/2009_personal_protection_st_sn1_net_gun.html its about the size of a flashlight, and i'm sure they could use it on humans too if they had to! there has to be a better way than the spate of dog shootings by police going around.

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8517399/police-shoot-dog-defending-unconscious-owner **** Video is Distressing Be warned **** ETA: I cant believe police are still not being given a more effective method or training to deal with peoples pets! - I'm glad the dog survived, Id like to think that if I was walking somewhere with my dog and I passed out that he would defend me from threatening persons, I'm sure that policeman seemed very dangerous to the dog. And not everyone anymore has the best intentions if they see someone unable to defend themselves... what a world. Hope everyone involved in the situation recovers.

Interested to know when in your dog's eyes a black staffy crossbreed becomes a black staffy. Where did it say anything about a cross breed? What I am trying to say (perhaps clumsily) is that I don't think dogs can tell one breed of dog from another. A negative reaction from the dog is the result of the handler tensing up I think dogs can pick and choose by colour/breed based on their experiences alone - When Brutus was about 10 months and needed to be placed in a kennel at short notice (not my choice but Id exhausted all options, and didn't know the area or the kennel very well) When I picked Him up I found out that two yellow/golden coated brother dogs (don't know if they where labs, goldens etc... no idea didn't see them) had pushed their way into his pen during the night and spent the w hole night bullying him, he was scratched and chewed and generally roughed up all night until a staff member separated them in the morning. - I myself have no problem with yellow coloured dogs and wouldn't think twice when I see one, but he does. He has growled and barked at a golden retreiver tied up minding its own business, barked at labs, and is just generally wary and aversive of anything that colour. I certainly know I didn't "train" him to be. Same now with the newly developed dislike of brown lab looking dogs, as there is an agressive territorial male over our back fence that sets him off every single day they are at it, now if he sees one in the street he shows a natural dislike, I myself have no problem with labs of any colour... so I would say it is possible for a dog to make up their own mind on what they see without a nessisary influence from the handler. Same as he stops and sits by every white or gold 4x4 thinking its "His" and he is going to get in it for a ride. I know I dont think they are mine! On the topic of loose dogs I could rant on about it all day, whole point is anyone, with dog, without dog, with kids or without kids has the right to walk from point A to Point B on public property without being harrased by someones offlead (or poorly controlled on way too long of a lead!) Dog. Brutus Pulls and Jumps at people when he sees them out of excitement, hes big and can do damage without meaning it. I while I don't cross the road when people pass, I do make him sit and stay still until they pass. And I don't do dog parks... for fear of people, and other dogs. He has already been kicked for by someone who thought his children and small dog where in danger in an offlead dog park... why? Because Brutus took his ball to the nearest available person instead of coming back to me, this guy lashed out and kicked Brutus pretty well in the head because he said he didn't want his kids bitten by a big vicious dog. (how's he gonna bite your kids with a mouthfull of ball?) - if your that afraid of dogs coming up to you what are you doing in an offlead dog park?

*groan* I in no way intended to trivialise the attack, okay perhaps "Startled" was the wrong word (And at No point did I say the attack "Wasn't Serious" or "Not that Bad"). But the media should get their wording more Accurate, reading that headline and the picture they put with it simply read as the Guide Dog was Mauled to Death by the Pit Bulls... so already before you have began to read the story Joe Public's Mind is made up - Even if it accurately read "Guide Dog is Killed by Car Fleeing Attacking Dogs" that would have been better. I am not a no breed can do no wrong advocate, I am just tired of seeing the word "Pit Bull" dragged over every attack story involving a dog. If it was the 1980's it would say German Shepherds. The Fact that this horrible tragic incident even Happened is just proof that stupid (IMO Lazy) laws that target dogs on their looks obviously aren't working. To me it still comes back to councils, not doing enough to ensure that people keeping dogs have sufficient containment and control over their animals, they seem to have so much money to throw around on these new laws why are there not more council officers out there beating the street? How long where these dogs out before this happened? - How preventable was this sickening attack? - its like that attack recently in Broken Hill, the owner said the dogs had never hurt anyone, of course they had also not been let run loose in a pack situation either. I am glad to read that the owners and the dogs have been apprehended, and that the dogs will be destroyed... but too little too late, doesn't undo the injuries the little cavvy sustained or bring back an invaluable dog like Matilda to her companion (or fill the void in her owners life). And I cant imagine the pathetic punishment that will be layed out against the owners... it will be pale in comparison to the damage their actions caused, especially when one reads the pale sentences being given out for murder charges as of late.

Just repeating what I said on facebook - (and the terrible unrelated photo the website put with that story UGH!!) The Media is responsible for so much of this mess with BSL, they should not be allowed to report on the breed of dog until its proven, headline should read "Loose Dogs Startled Guide dog onto road where it was killed by a car". Should be like Crimes, no naming the suspect - if they cant produce photos or other evidence they are simply "Loose Aggressive Dogs of Undetermined breed" - And again where is it the Dogs fault? The Dogs where obviously poorly contained, accidently or deliberately let loose = Human Fault. Such a tragedy for the dogs and owners involved!
-
I know Id love to try it with Brutus one day in Brissy! - Now if only they would drag a ball around instead of a rag lol.

Qld being one of the least dog friendly states in regards to dining will be the last to follow suit no doubt which is a shame seeing as we have the weather to allow us to take out pooches to outdoor cafes/restaurants! We will just have to do something rash.. like... move to WA
-
Hope the rest of the states will wake up and follow suit, in this economic climate we cant afford to be turning peoples business away - people who wont want to eat with dogs I'm sure will still have plenty of places to choose from. Its not like we have been asking to have our dogs sit on the tables or cook the food for us!
-
This is so tragic, and happening too much... friends of ours in Makay had their poor cat mauled to death by 2 dogs in their front yard on the weekend So terrible for that family... and that poor little Chi.
