My Dobermann had never seen a snake in his life until hubby accidentally let him out in the front yard when. I had one of our pet diamonds out in his sun cage (all I can say is thank dog the snake was in a cage!!) because the snake hissed at the dog when he came up to me and the dog was in full attack mode, hackles up full savage, I had never seen such a vicious reaction from this dog towards another living creature in his life. I had to hold the cage down and try to drag him away with the other. Very scary. So I'm guessing he won't be around for long if he happens to find a brown snake somewhere :/

There is nothing in this legislation to truly discourage backyard breeders or irresponsible people who just produce "accidental" litters. Irresponsible people don't register their animals anyway. I wanted to buy a house in Glenwood (Fraser Coast) down the track which is just north of me - I'm in Gympie now so this is concerning cos it's in the next council over. As an owner of a 9 year old Entire Doberman, who has never given me an issue due to being entire - so no roaming, no aggression, no unwanted litters, no health issues... I don't want to be forced to desex my dog because other people are irresponsible. Ie. Letting their dogs roam, breeding indiscriminately, not training etc. I like my dog just the way he is. I'm a responsible owner, I'm not contributing to the over population so I should be able to leave him exactly as he is. And yes that's exactly right about the dumped animal population will explode! Noone who is irresponsible enough to produce them is going to pay to desex a litter of unwanted kittens or puppies they can't even give away, they will just get dumped at the pound if they're lucky - dumped in the bush or drowned/worse if they aren't.

I think 22 weeks is far too young for some breeds, heck my friend couldn't even get her English Stafford desexed at 5 months cos his testicles hadn't descended enough.... "We have a significant number of cats and dogs — about half the population has a pet — so I don't think it's unreasonable to have some form of management to it," Cr Garland said. RSPCA calls for state-wide implementation RSPCA Queensland spokesman Michael Beatty hailed the decision, calling on other councils to follow the Fraser Coast's lead. "It's leading from the front and solving the problem, at least partially, before it becomes a problem," Mr Beatty said. "We'd like to see every single council in Queensland do exactly the same thing. I'm sure I speak for other states' RSPCAs in saying they'd like their councils to do that as well. "So many animals end up in pounds and RSPCA shelters every year, and probably the main reason for that is people simply haven't had their animals desexed." Mr Beatty said for owners struggling to afford to have their animals neutered, the RSPCA's Operation Wanted program provided discounted desexing in locations across Queensland, including the Fraser Coast. The council is also rewarding owners for getting their pets neutered: unregistered animals desexed before the end of April can be registered for free. The new laws come into effect in the Fraser Coast council area, which includes Hervey Bay and Maryborough, on May 1. Animals can still be registered with the council before May 1 and have higher registration fees: $118 for a whole dog, versus $57 for a neutered dog. Legitimate breeding operations on the Fraser Coast will continue, with breeding permits available through the council for $100."

Plenty of innocent dogs have been killed for far less worthwhile reasons, remove the fact it is a trained guide dog - and if what is said owner trained, well then the dog wasn't given to her by a guide dog society, the dog may well not have been able to serve someone else as well as its master but - the dog obviously lived a very happy 5 year long life, it was put to sleep and now neither it or its owner know any different. Where is the uproar for the "I'm moving, cant have a dog at my new house so Ill have it PTS." "Kids are allergic - Ill have it PTS" "She barks alot - Ill have her PTS" "She growled at someone ill have her PTS" "I just DONT WANT IT anymore so ill have it PTS" - you can bet it happens to thousands more dogs than this one guide dog, and you can bet its not the first dog that someone has had pts to be buried with them - it wont be the last. Why should this lady be deprived of her final wish because of her dogs "job" ? I don't agree with what she did, surely she could have stipulated that the dog continue to live out its life and have its ashes or body added to her grave at a later date, I know that's what I would prefer.

Laws mean stuff all unless someone is going to police them. Otherwise, all well and good. Way more cats terminated every year than dogs.

His dogs look happy and well cared for, I am sure there is some other more pressing animal cruelty issue somewhere that could be made into more significant news. I doubt the ears where done as adults, I don't agree with the ears (and who is to say he did it? it was likely the breeder anyway), but then I would have to flip a wig at 99% of USA Breeders of Danes, Dobes, Boxers etc. The site didn't look red, angry or infected... de-sexing a female dog leaves them way more sore than that would, my mastiff X went through hell with her recovery it knocked her about like she was hit by a truck. I'm not against de-sexing I am just saying we cant call one thing animal cruelty cos it hurts the dog, and another thing not animal cruelty cos it hurts the dog "for a better cause". There is a video that says he applied a surface anaesthetic and that she was "asleep" he didn't say he knocked her out, I would say being an Amstaff/PitBull esque type dog it was likely that if she couldn't feel what was being done to her she would have just flaked out there anyway. Not saying what he did was right/wrong what ever - parents pierce their kids ears without say so and do other things to them before they are aware and can say "No". Dog is in the same position I guess. Bottom line... there are dogs in far worse "peril" than this dog that would be more news worthy.

2 years managing a Mobile Phone kiosk in a shopping centre I know how she feels... but in the end as nice as the idea to think you can charge for the hours you stand around giving free advice just hoping the person has the common decency to make their sale from you rather than run off to get the product cheaper from the place with no service, also its not just a matter of people getting it cheaper... people dont like to look like they dont know something, alot of people feel empowered when they can walk into a store and bargain a better deal cos they have already got all the info out of someone else who was just trying to be nice to make a sale. Just sad really... Sick of it as I got of being the free advice/service center for the big telstra store... loose your temper just once and bad news travels fast and i think thats whats gonna happen here.

Well I'd say since it was the little dog that got the chomping.. Id say the little dog is the one with the death sentence. And this is not what happened here, this was a beach, both dogs where off lead and one dog came and killed another dog. Tragicly simple. The big dog is the one still breathing. I wish they would update this story, would like to know if the owner of the attacking dog has handed himself in or done anything about his dog, If this was the dogs first offence and he doesn't want it killed - then he needs to own up to the consequences of owning a menacing or dangerous dog - and keep it muzzled and leashed in public. Thing is he might have snuck off and PTS his dog of his own accord, and then what noone has to answer for this act? Just as bad really. And this family still has no closure...

I just don't get how people can be so unfeeling, there is no way I could ring a breeder and just go "How much for a pup?" or a text or one line email asking the same... I mean sure at some stage I will want to know the price... but I usually want to get to know the breeder and give them a chance to know me and assess weather they want me to be a potential owner of one of their puppies... But the one thing that ticks me off is that "if you cant afford a puppy you cant afford to look after the dog" mentality - very few people I know have over $1500 + lying around in their bank "just in case" something happens to their dog. Would be nice, but that's why responsible pet owners have pet insurance for unforeseen emergencies if they don't have emergency funds lying around or an account and a generous vet. My dogs eat better than I do! and certainly get spoilt more than I do, but I don't have over $1500 lying around if I wanted to buy another dog, which I do want to... but id still have to save that money and budget for it... just cos I would have to do that doesn't make me a bad owner - there's plenty of people WITH money who can JUST buy a dog of any value on a whim.. without taking into account of what an impact that puppy will have on their lives - one could say dogs purchased by people who just had money to burn "bored" spending are more likely to end up a dog that wasn't planned for - or chances are someone who is a puppy farmer and makes money from their dogs also has money lying around to burn when they are wanting another dog. And that's not to say that all people with money are like "that", and that's not to say that all people without money are like "that". On a happier note, beautiful babies MonElite! (love the photo with the little one in mum's mouth hehe she keeping the little mischiefs inline? :D )

Another idiot putting another nail in the 'coffin' for Dangerous Dog laws (what next we ban all big black dogs?), deplorable that this scum just grabbed his dog and left. Obviously just trying to save his own skin from persecution. I hope he is found, caught and sent to jail, and I'm afraid that a dog that is so violently disturbed that it does not stop an attack until its victim is torn to pieces is better off PTS, It has no quality of life in its future. If it is declared dangerous and allowed to live it will simply live a more isolated and frustrated life - probably what led to the whole incident. Poor little Schnauzer ... I spent 20 years owning little dogs before I went to biguns, and I can't very well imagine the thought of one of my Dachies being ripped apart in front of me. The owner of the offending dog would want to hope that I'd be too distraught to chase him or HE would have been calling the cops to save himself... he wouldn't have got a chance to walk away. Pity no bystanders followed him or took pictures of him or his dog if it was so busy. RIP little Schnau Schnau...

From what I read, I understand it was the fact poor Buddy was tethered with a choker chain, depending on the way he came to be off the table and that he couldn't support himself and was not checked on for so long, the height of the table wouldnt have mattered a great deal, when you take into account how high the grooming arm would have been.

R.I.P Buddy, *hugs* Cazstaff, no human or dog should have to go through this ever... and their reasoning behind it complete and total negligence. It was irresponsible and straight up canine murder really. Having lunch while a dog is on a table and out of sight? Just... guh.. there are no words. I too would be seeking legal action, contacting the media & doing everything I could to make sure they cant do this to another precious dog like your Buddy. I mean how many times have they done this before and just gotten lucky?? Disgraceful, Id like to say if it was me Id be filled with so much grief and rage they would be picking my 4x4 out of the front of their shop by the next morning. (Would like to... but that would make them the victims then.) Follow every legal avenue you can to get justice for Buddy. I too am happy to donate a few $$ for legal fees!

From what I recall when that article was first posted that picture wasn't with it, I remember commenting on this article up to 2 days after it was posted and this picture still wasn't with it. its been added much later. And fortunately they didn't use a stupid picture like this in the printed newspaper article either, they showed the pic of the poor boy who is now emotionally and physically scarred for life. Only thing going for the owner is at least she didn't bundle the dog into a car and or do a runner and contained the dog (too little too late) and called the police. Least she stayed to face the music.

I just read this and found-it absolutely sickening. That poor man... I hope some passers by came to his aid quickly. And a small dog being swung by its leash? Poor thing is so lucky to escape injury. Piece of scum should be brought up on every charge in the book and throw animal cruelty in there as well. The irony? If that was a loose wandering dog that had attacked the man and his dog... it would be a Top story, with a huge amount of BS thrown in for good measure and the dog if caught would probably already be pts. Pity same reaction cant be given to this "human" attacker.

I think I got to "The prongs are sharpened which is often the case" before I rolled my eyes and gave up. They dont rip necks appart, and yes like any collar they can cause pressure necrosis (those gorey photos that anti-prong people always throw at you) from being tied up or left on for extended periods of time. I can not fathom how the heck people think "sharpening" the prongs on these things is so easy and common... if its so common, how come their arent pages of google images of "sharpened" prong collars? or how to pages on how to sharpen the points?? - Something cant be sooo common yet so hard to find. Doesn't really add up now does it? I do believe however that Joe Public (i hope noone ever actually called Joe public actually joins this forum) should not be able to just pluck one of these collars from anywhere (or a check chain for that matter) without being shown how to correctly use one. I recently switched to a neck tech type, which has blunt low profile prongs for Brutus, most of the time it just hangs loose. I was shown by a trainer how to use an older style prong, and I use a martingale on our Mastiff. What I use on my dogs doesn't cause them pain, I don't intentionally hurt my dogs - so why should my training tools that WORK for me be taken away cos too many idiots cant use things properly or because people take them at face value.. lots of things "look" unsightly but are not harmful in the right hands and serve a purpose. If a person WANTS to hurt a dog by putting something around their neck... banning, removing or restricting prong collars woudlnt stop such things. Cruel people will be cruel no matter whats available or not available to them.

Well HW, I think it has nothing to do with my husband having a thick skin or not... he wasn't crying about it like a baby he just said what happened to him out on the walk. I think if you are not violating any laws, your dogs are on lead and under control then you have every right to just walk in peace without someone going out of their way to abuse you on a stupid assumption. And as for the lead "language" hmm technically it could be a brace lead... but it is a lead that runs down to a ring then separates into two single leashes. So I dunno.. brace coupler .. its a leash that (kind of) allows you to walk two dogs at once. :laugh: And she wasn't On the foot path she was on the road, she pulled over and yelled at him from the road. I just think it was such a silly reaction, mind you today when I went for a walk I saw no less than 5 poops just left in the grass beside the footpath... so obviously there are alot of people around here not picking up the poop (mind you there are also alot of people around here who don't contain their dogs period.)

Well my husbands Idea of old and my idea of old probably differ... but really I couldnt care about her age, but apparently she zoomed up beside him at quite high speed, jammed on the brakes... stopped to abuse him and pretty much peddled away before he could even think to say he had bags... not that she even deserved an answer for such a silly outburst .. o_O

Really? REALLY? I mean I was simply absolutely floored when he told me this. What the heck is wrong with the public these days?? My OH was walking our two dogs today, one leash on a coupler. Walking down the foot path minding all 3 of their own businesses. And an older lady on a bicycle rides up to him and verbally abuses him saying How dare he be out walking two Large dogs with.. NO BAGS!!!. He was also too stunned to say something back to her.. but really?? No Bags?? would she have stopped and abused him if he had two little dogs? how did she know he did not have bags?? (now by bags I assume she meant poop bags... what other bags could you possibly mean?) My husband wears Cargo shorts with enough room in the pockets to fit the dogs themselves... ie. he carries the doggie bags in his Pockets when he goes for a walk... cos I don't like great wads of tacky green plastic bags tied around the dog lead. Did she spot some dog poop on the ground somewhere and just assume that it must be from a big dog and she would abuse the next dog owner she found? OMG? For starters our new rescue dog doesn't poop outside the yard, she is "paranoid" about it. And OH and myself ALWAYS pick up after our dogs. Hell the one time I was caught without bags, I walked to a friends house nearby.. asked for a bag and WENT BACK for the poop! I'm so glad I wasnt with him, he was too stunned to respond. I woudlnt have been. After the week of work I've had, Im one straw away from quitting my job cos im tired of being abused... I wouldn't like to be some unfortunate person who abused me on my day off outside of work - about my dogs or my husband!

Exercising your right to be there. If you want to have a picnic in the middle of a dog off leash area, like it or not, dog owners have to deal with it. "Off leash" doesn't equate to "no dog haters allowed". I don't like it when loud noisy little kids run around me when I'm sitting in the park - I know that if I'm in a park I'm going to encounter noisy children, I most certainly wouldn't THROW ROCKS at them. And If my fear or dislike of children or dogs or what ever was so bad that I felt the need to throw rocks at them - throwing rocks, hitting with a stick, kicking, yelling, abusing etc.... is all just as bad as one another. If you think this is an acceptable way to deal with someone dog that's no longer a threat to you - ie. Returning to its owner... its plain old unacceptable. I'm scared of Rotties - But I know I might meet one in a dog park, but I still wouldn't throw rocks at one. Which is pretty much the whole point of what I said - If your fear/hatred/dislike etc of dogs is SO BAD that you cant just ignore them and keep walking - that you feel you need to THROW ROCKS at them... then you shouldn't be around a place where there are dogs, If this guy was afraid of buses for example but chose to walk on a footpath next to a bus route and a bus came to close to him.. would we accept him throwing rocks at the bus? nah don't think so. It does not equate to "Dog haters not allowed" but it should equate to "people who cant control their acceptable behaviour in public" not allowed. It wouldn't be acceptable for someone to let their fear aggressive dog off in an offlead park and have it attack someone else's dog... a human should know better.

I'm sorry but if you have an irrational fear of dogs that causes you to need to throw rocks at them as they are returning to their owner and clearly no threat to you any more (ie. It's an act of pure malice not fear, fear is if you do it when a dog runs towards you) then what the heck are you doing in a park where dogs are allowed off leash??! What an upsetting experience. I would have perused him if he had hit my dog and made sure he was punished accordingly.

I think it is silly to call for the muzzling of "dangerous breeds" it will start off like that then it will be every dog over 10kg's has to wear a muzzle, then every black dog, then every furry dog... I'd put muzzles on my dogs If I had to, just to protect them against the liability if another dog bites THEM - well they where muzzled. So the un-muzzled dog should get the blame, not my dogs just cos one is a bully breed and the other is a dobermann. I feel sorry for this girl and her pup, and unfortunatly I see so many people walking small puppies in situations that they dont belong in at such a young age. Was like that guy that walked into the shop and slid his beagle pup along the floor right up to Brutus's nose... didnt even ask me if my dog was okay with other dogs Again.. its the humans not the dogs, and dogs will get the blame cos its easier...
