http://www.lytro.com/pictures/lyt-21?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=SharedLink Haven't had a long look at it. Just picked it up on a photography forum. System takes the shot, then you focus. Pessimists predicting it will put photographers out of business, too easy, anyone can do selective focus, any shot can be as from a 1.4 lens with perfect focus where it's wanted. Magic, I'll have one!! Haven't got to the bit where the price is listed, maybe I won't have one after all. Isn't it amazing though: just mess with the samples here (green arrow, bottom corner).

Jules I only just read this, I am so very sorry, it is the saddest news. Lost my Doberman the same way years ago, the grief does soften with time but it is a terrible loss to endure. Wish there were words to help. If I can come over and help in a practical way any time at all this week just say. I'm glad you are still with Croydon they are so good - I haven't been to club since I retired Frodo from flyball. Just devastating to lose young Brock like this, rest in peace beautiful boy.

Here is the help "how to" Red Bubble link: http://support.redbubble.com/kb/advanced/how-to-make-calendars It does say that each image should have a description for printing on each page.

RedBubble is the best I've used/seen, and it is large format with good paper. Makes the A4 ones look a bit tiddly by comparison. Also they are a bit dearer (worth it).

Bought my D90 on about the day of release, feels like forever - never had this happen with hard use and quite a few makes of SD cards. Must be a reason - I'd be taking it to Shutter Box in Toorak, he is an amazing repair shop, reasonable charge not a rip-off. Think he has moved from the Toorak Road shop and is just around the corner. Google should find him.

You can get a few quotes from an insurance broker (from different companies) it is free to get quotes and no obligation to accept any. If you accept a quote there is no charge from the Broker as they get their cut from the insurance company for introducing you to them. Mine was $500 pa, and also included insurance of a client's dog whilst dog-walking and 10 mil. public liability third-party damage. That's a few years ago, think it was Alliance.

Jeeze I am so unimpressed. So they have done in a week what should have been done while they sat on their money-grubbing hands for the past ten years. And still relying on some pie in the sky "hope" that it will be influential "across the Indonesian industry". (no guarantee, no assurance). Marvellous. And no prime reason for these actions appears based on addressing cruelty: it's economics based. Too little too late in my opinion, or maybe too little for a too-soon resumption of the status quo.

Just beautiful shots Evolving, thank you. I haven't seen them "like that" for about 40-50 years. I thought the spiders had gone the way of the frogs. But they are saying frogs in some areas (world wide) are making a small come-back, hope the spiders are doing the same.

Mounting Photos On Board Or Card For Competitions
PossumCorner replied to rubiton's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
If you can't cut the mat youself, a local Picture-framer will often have pre-cut mats in standard sizes ready to use. If it's not a standard size "hole" you need, they'd still cut one for you fairly cheap. We used to get our local framer to mat up our prints for exhibition/club comps. She was quick, top quality, inexpensive and it was less trouble than doing it ourselves. Are you on Red Bubble: not the cheapest but they do good matting for exhibition: all of the Dandenong Ranges prints in the standing exhibition in Emerald at the Elevations Restaurant are by Red Bubble, they look fantastic. It's worth getting it right if for exhibition: there was one recently with beautiful photography but each entrant had done their matting preparation as a "home job" and by the end of the ten-days a lot of prints had buckled or waved, even those under glass frames but not done well. Not a good look. Edit to adde: just saw in your siggy you're on Red Bubble. Why not do a mount yourself plus get one done by RB, they are quick. Then you can compare and say well mine's just as good, or oh yes I could do this different. -
So good Iltby. Especially like the Currawong and the Yellow Robin, gorgeous shots.

That's great. I was looking for the line "I will never wash my hand again" but you stopped short of that. The whole thing is amazing, even bringing Sarbi home - Australian doesn't have a great track record with war animals once they are "finished with", so this is really special as being part of a change of ethics. I would love to know more about the fellow who cared for him for those 14 months. It's a big thing to take on a lost dog in a war-torn country and look after it, "became separated in an attack" is a massive terrifying event, not just running off because of fireworks. He is also deserving of a medal I think. Was there any follow-up or was the dog just grabbed back and left the poor guy for dead so to speak?

Fantastic, I'd just like to see the Icelandic Ponies alone, aside from the amazing country. Trifecta, have a look at David's blog - he's one of the photographers in our camera club (Knox Photographic Society). http://blog.davidburren.com/ He is taking a group to the Arctic later in the year (Polar Bear focussed) I think, there might be something on his blog or a link to the info. At the moment he is out of touch as he is leading a photographic tour to Antarctica. I don't know anything about his prices, but I don't think they'd be as 'rich' as some. And his wildlife work and savvy is great, both including and aside from the Antarctic trips works.

We were driving home from Daylesford towards Westgate Bridge when I thought of it. Would he pull up on the Freeway, nope, so this is through the (dirty) windscreen of a (bouncing) Landrover at 80kph with an unsuitable lens. If I'd though quicker we could have turned off at the wharves and tried for a shot through the spars of the Polly Woodside. That would have been worth some time, but too late too late. Oops didn't resize, will get back to that.

12 Yr Old Wants To Take Better Photos
PossumCorner replied to redangel's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
Why full auto? If she wants to learn to take better photos she needs to understand exposure values and their relationship to one another. Full auto will just hold her back and reduce her confidence to learn later on. And a twelve-year old would probably learn the principles much quicker than an "adult". Fantastic that she wants to upgrade, but don't put a brick on her head by not giving the full range of manual setting options. At twelve, I'd take a few weeks longer to find "the" camera, and look at used DSLRs, or some of the built-in lens 12x zoom like the Panasonics which have a good Macro setting. Some of the options just a few years old are lovely cameras and would take her forward for years, good investment. Equally good investment would be the book "Understanding Exposure" so she can dib into the theory without pressure. -
Camera House my first choice (convenient - can drop by and pick up easily, but they do also mail). Digital Works in Hallam, top pro lab, very quick safe mail service or you can pick up prints. Rabbit Photos chain take-over group, (Photo Xpert) or something, are good up to 4x6 or 5x7. Larger than that I'd prefer Camera House. Harvey Norman and PX aren't dreadful, just not as good as CH or DW for larger prints.

Is that your Painted Lady? (Looked for original on Red Bubble). Love the soft colours, really nice.

Must be dog bowls?? What about chunky glazed pseudo-Italian spaghetti bowls, or heavy ceramic Chinese soup bowls? Or cheap small or medium casserole dishes from The Reject Shop?

Why Is Aus Becoming So Non Dog Friendly
PossumCorner replied to Inevitablue's topic in General Dog Discussion
The "all dogs muzzled" on Melbourne area trains must be fairly new. It used to be only large dogs must wear a muzzle, small dogs at owner's discretion. So what constitutes a muzzle? If I take my dog/s on the train and put a black fabric strip from the collar, lightly around muzzle and back to collar is that a muzzle? Or if I buy one of those pretty useless mesh muzzles in the $2 shop does that qualify? If other passengers perceive that a dog is muzzled even if it not a heavy thing of metal and moulded leather is that enough? What about a Halti or Gentle-Leader - could they be counted as a muzzle? I've never been questioned by station staff when stepping on or off the train with un-muzzled dogs - and I hadn't heard til I saw Nekhbet's post above that all dogs are required to be muzzled (supported by the note on their website I just googled). My dogs don't do being muzzled, they'd be fraught, ouchies. Maybe I'll carry some lightweight ones and say "I'm just putting it on now" if any of godz little police say anything. Bummer anyway. -
And nailed it. Very nice. Reminds me of John Denver, RIP (Two shots and no ducks - and cold cold hands).

My hydrobath (Fidos twin-tank, black/red) is also in Marketplace also at $1500, but also in Melbourne. Even though in good nick, it is a big thing to buy sight-unseen interstate, plus transport costs. Mine is not in the for-sale section of DoL, just in Marketplace which is in Off-topic on the forum, and probably on page-2 after the few days I put it there. Lea if you don't go to Off Topic, PM me for details if interstate doesn't faze your friend.

Thank you, reinforced point(s) taken.

If anyone is thinking about trying Photoshop, or thinking about joining Red Bubble, now is a handy time to do both. I don't know what normal free trial of CS5 is - but Adobe has given RB a 30 day free trial of CS5 so any RB members can download it. They are also running a comp for people wanting to have a go at some of the new features, and include a "how to" demonstration. Two birds with one stone.
-
Best help I have come across is "Scott Kelby's Seven Point" book - I think there is one for CS3 and one for CS5. It goes through every tiny baby step of what to click, doesn't leave anything to assuming you should know this or that already. So it is especially good for making layers and when and how to flatten them, but keeps it as basic as you want. Good book, recommend, it takes the mystery out of using layers. Cheaper ex USA than borders. And yes, I'm sure some you-tube tutorials are made just to boost the tutor's self-importance at being all-knowing and without actually showing any of the small steps. So they are more like this is what you can do than actually this is how you do it.

It's a bit geeky, too techy for my interest. In a simplistic way it's just managing the settings to not take the shot until something (bird, insect) moves into focus. In it's real-meaning, it goes the step further and is for remote-controlled set-up, infra-red beams on subject trigger shutter when subject (wild animal usually) steps into focus. The results can be stunning, but for normal purposes it gets to a point where "how it is done" has become more important than the resulting shot. Not that my collection of bees-in-flight and the like is vast, and if I tried the trap-focus method it might increase: but not to any real purpose. If it had a real benefit for me I would leap upon it: but - well some of the "example" shots I've looked at were horses: well why not focus on the horse in the first place and stop mucking around? Open mind though - be interested to know if any dolers have tried it.

It stands for High Dynamic Range - which is a bit meaningless but stuck. It's just a way of merging a few images so the end result gives "more" than you could get with just one shot with one lot of settings for a single exposure (combination shutter speed, aperture, ISO). Generally it uses 3 shots with three different exposures. Some cameras can automate five or even seven different exposures for one shutter activation to blend. A HDR result can be done in photoshop from just one shot, but it won't look as effective as one using the combined images. Some new camera models can do the whole HDR blending in-camera. A look at Stuck in Customs' portfolio/gallery gives some good examples, as does Persephone's link to Philip Johnson. When I look at the good stuff I think wow, but a lot of it is nerve jangling without much going for it.
