  1. Government agencies are usually fairly conservative in their wording. So I though it was novel that the Therapeutic Goods Administration said of black salve: "Your shouldn't sell snake oil". Years ago coal tar ointment was used for anything and everything. Wonder if that's the same ingredients.
  2. Oh yes - the vet being 'ordered' seems odd terminology too, would not the vet have been part of the decision process? Sad all round though.
  3. Warms the heart. And feel for the teen, not a joy for either of them, hope it works out with them both being comfortable.
  4. Griza that's beautiful of Bella, those eyes!
  5. Thanks all. We already have a Captain Jack sheep (though he is a Torchwood boy). So will work through the other pirates including Elizabeth - and my girl-pick Angelica (Blackbeard's daughter). Meantime, Thomas is looking a bit better, still frail but getting cheekier. 21/52 22/52
  6. New arrival today, here just two hours old. And not sure if boy or girl, Kiona the mum has only one eye and easily startled, so leaving them in peace til they've well bonded. His dad is a black alpaca (Black Jack) with a lovely friendly nature so hope this one takes after him. We need a sort of pirate name. 18/52 And meantime we are bottle feeding an orphan lamb, now 10 days old. This was day one after the first clean-up wash/wipe. He is still a bit touch and go, has joint-ill, had antibiotic shots and vet is hopeful but not over optimistic. Still, drinking to schedule and gets about, one day at a time. 19/52 His name is Thomas. 20/52
  7. Yes, and love seeing one as the subject and not just as a prop for a sunset. (Although sunset always looks good behind a windmill).
  8. I often buy almost bulk packs of craisins cheaply (near use-by) at NQR to use in no sugar rice-bakes mostly. I've been advised that they dehydrate well and can then be powdered in a vitamix or coffee grinder. Again lightly dehydrate the powder 'to be sure', decant into test tubes or spice containers and use with just about everything. Also that fresh frozen packs defrosted dehydrate well. Haven't tried it, must get the dehydrator out and use it more. Is powdered cranberry good for pets?, I hadn't heard of it as a herbal remedy or additive. Imagine it would need a fair amount to have any effect.
  9. I do. Solitary confinement is a high end punishment for human prisoners. Because we are social animals. As are dogs. Sin bin for even two or three minutes is an aversive. For hours on end there is no benefit.
  10. They always did in the hunt clubs. The best rides were fast drag hunts, the hounds loved following an aniseed 'licorice' drag. And in the UK now fox-hunting is illegal the Hunts that maintain a pack of hounds keep their membership this way.
  11. Oh sure Persephone, just as callous-type show breeders cull puppies the hard way, I'm sure less now than previously. We all hope enlightenment is spreading - even farm dogs that can no longer work are more likely to be retired and cared for or humanely pts, unlike some barbaric old days/old ways. I admit I do arc up at some of the absolute stupid that gets dredged up re foxhounds, peta and co. have a lot of misinformation from their twisted little minds to answer for.
  12. I liked those, haven't seen them around for a few years now. They were great for the older dogs, soft and warm but not thick or bulky, so they could step on and off easier.
  13. I thought I knew a little of fox-hunting from the old days. I never heard of this happening. I did know retired fox hounds who were loved and wanted and lived happy lives. Are you saying this is normal practice in the UK or Australia or both? Is duck hunting the same - are retrievers who can no longer run and swim euthanased in this way - or at all?
  14. No I didn't ring-bark your gum tree. Why don't you ask Sooty? Oh no, of course it wouldn't be Golden Boy would it! 17/52
  15. Thanks Roova, I haven't done much for ages. Aside from an adobe meltdown here so no bridge/photoshop for a bit, it took me ages to come to terms with the new point-and-shoot. Because it doesn't shoot in Raw. How could I do that to myself??? - just took it for granted that it was jpg fine, raw, or both together like my Sony a couple of years ago. The shock of it being jpg-only was earthquake dimension. I am slowly learning to cope and will keep taking the tablets.
  16. River my Cashmere is the same: she is now around 10 yrs, hasn't mellowed, still not quite safe to be in her yard. A wet hand flicked at her is enough, dislike of being wet must be a universal goat thing. (Spray bottle by her gatepost a good idea, thanks). Mostly totally affectionate, but you never know when Riv will do the up on hind legs and charge - funny girl goats.
  17. Especially the goat - love the way Mary fits in and takes finding a family as quite normal.
  18. Autumn about over, and our last day of clean-up picking at a nearby orchard. We usually split the clean-up picks three ways, between charity groups, community like schools etc, and the pickers take one-third home. But today was huge, so I would have at least a couple of hundred kilos between the last of the beautiful Pink Ladies and clean windfalls for the chooks etc. (The sheep have also developed a taste for apples). 14/52 - Row 15 15/52 - Pink Lady 16/52 - Yellow Gravenstein
  19. Clydesdale horse-shoe - unearthed digging a post hole. 13/52
  20. Are livestock guard dogs exempt? Or not? Given that so many Maremmas around us (in Vic) are exclusively kept to kill foxes. Maybe under the 'other than vermin' classification.
  21. Dogs barking at lawnmowers - would that excite the internet?
  22. How effective are they supposed to be? I just leave the ABC on for Rheneas. Often enough the same TV commentators' voices there, so a bit of continuity/reassurance all is normal.
