Thanks Firestone, will give those suggestions a go tomorrow if it is hot! I didn't think pups this young (2 days) would be affected by the heat so much. It is much cooler here now and they have all settled down and are sleeping. They must be warm because they are all spread around the box. Today they were squealing and wandering around intermittently. I am a worrier, so have been concerned, because they have been so settled and have been sleeping between feeds, toileting etc perfectly. They have all put on between 50 - 100 grams since they were born late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, which is good. Hopefully it will be cooler tomorrow!

My pups have been squealing on and off all afternoon! They are all putting on weight, all toileting, mum is doing everything right. It is very hot here though! I have never had a litter in the heat, usually I have to keep them warm. The room they are in in quite warm, but has ventilation and a fan. Any tips on keeping them the ideal temp?

Wow, the xray is amazing. I have never had one of mine xrayed before whelping. Can you actually tell exactly how many she is having?

This is so sad! It is so hard to lose one of our beloved friends, I can't imagine what it feels like to lose one and her babies as well. My thoughts are with you.

Hope all new mums and owners are doing well this morning. I weighed our little guys yesterday and they had all gained weight and already look noticeably chubbier, the littlest gaining the most, I guess I always make sure he gets a boob with a good supply! The mum is doing really well now, took awhile for her to settle down after the birth, but is feeding them and toileting them on her own now. I had a bit of sleep between feeds, so am feeling quite human again. Chopperlodge, all the best with your girls whelping. Will be thinking of you.

Thanks Leanne, I am like you, I am keeping at least one and so tell people up front they will not be able to choose their puppy, I will choose for them, depending on their requirements, family situation, and pup temperament etc, and that I will be leaving my choosing for myself until as long as possible. People are fine with that, but just want to come and look at the litter. I have had some come as early as 3 weeks, with lots of handwashing, shoes off etc. However it is a risk and the more I read about parvo the less I want to take any risks. I guess I made the mistake of letting people know as soon as the litter was born!!! Leaving it a week is a good idea. I have a waiting list, so have people emailing and phoning before birth to see how things are progressing. In a way it is great, because I know the pups are going to homes that are really keen and caring.

Leanne, your babies are adorable and so nicely rounded, just gorgeous. Congrats yarrowfell on your soon to be large litter of pugs. Good luck. MM I hope you are able to get some sleep soon. My girl is doing well in the maternal department, but does need some encouraging to toilet the pups, I hold them up for her after a feed one by one and she cleans them. If I don't she seems to fixate on just one. It is exhausting having a litter of pups, but a lot of fun. Except i have puppy buyers already saying, "When can we come and see the pups?" They are not even a day old yet!!!! Out of interest what age do people suggest the pups are to have visitors (puppy buyers) to have a look?

Congratulations Leanne on your litter of 5. Even though it sounds like it was an anxious time for you, glad you had a good outcome. Hope you can get some rest and hope Scarlet is a great mum. Rest up!

She did...she is a great dog, and produces very nice puppies.

Sorry had to edit, as the photo of Cristie was sideways. Should be able to see both now!

Here is my girl, just totally exhausted and wondering "How much longer can this go on?" Mind you I was too! Also one more of the gorgeous litter.

I just have to resize it, then will post it.

They are all good sized pups averaging between 430 - just over 500 grams, with one little boy of 350 grams! I don't think the mum would be too impressed if we tried to put them back in, she is very glad it is all over. I have a photo of her during the labour, resting her head on the side of the whelping box...too cute!

A few photos taken very early this morning:

Have been thinking about you all night Leanne, hopefully she will have them through the day, be a fantastic mum and then you can get a good night sleep tonight. Best of luck & keep us posted. I don't hop on here all that often but when you are filling in time awaiting the whelping and after you get a bit of time to catch up on dogzonline news.
-
The final breakdown is 3 black girls, 1 yellow girl, 2 yellow boys, 2 black boys. All good size around 450 - 500 grams, except one little yellow boy who was just over 350 grams, but very strong.
-
Well still 8 here, no more, and no sleep either. Pups have been a bit restless, but are feeding well, so hopefully today they will settle a bit better.
-
Whoops, make that 8, a black boy born at 2.30am. My palpating of the abdomen/uterus skills obviously are not very good. She had a hard time delivering him. He had come out of his sack and his mouth was wide open and his bottom jaw was caught and her pushing wasn't making it any easier. Sorry to be so graphic! However I read about this very thing online today, doing a bit of a refresher before the big event and one site said this exact thing could happen. I had to push him back a bit before he could come out. He was very limp for awhile but came good and was quite snuffly for a bit, I guess he swallowed quite a lot of fluid, with his mouth open and mum pushing him like that. Poor little guy, but after a bit of gentle persuasion he had a suck and seems fine. Now I am not so confident there isn't more in there, so maybe sleep will be awhile off yet.
-
Yellow girl born at midnight. I think that may be it. She feels empty, but I have said that before and then the bitch has delivered another one. She seems much happier now though. I will keep a very close eye on her with pups, but I think she will recover quickly and be fine. Good luck with your girl, hope all goes really well for you. Edited to say that the little girl was born outside while taking mum for a toilet break. She squatted and I caught her just in time. Walking her around between some of the pups definitely helped I think.

Good luck Ozstar. My girl has slowed down a bit, but there are still a few more in there. So we will both be having no sleep tonight. Also my girl is a bit overwhelmed with the puppies, but is a text book whelper, just not as maternal as I would hope. She has had a litter before, and wasn't great with pups, but I thought that was just from being a maiden, but looks like she is going to be the same again. It took her a few days to really settle with the pups last time, but she eventually came good.
-
One more big yellow boy. She had a good rest between the 5 and the last and should have another very soon. My prediction is 8 or 9!
-
Well so far we have 5 puppies, 3 black girls, 1 yellow boy and 1 black boy. She still has a few more, but is doing such a good job. She is resting between pups, which are approx. 30 - 40 minutes apart and pups are strong, sucking really well. We are stoked here!
-
Looks like my girl is in early labour.
-
Congratulations on your 6 pups MM. Hope they are doing well! You just never know what can go wrong, can you? I don't know whether reading these things helps me or makes me more anxious. My girl is due on Saturday, has been nesting through the night and this morning, but seems ok. I am about to take her temp soon. Also some of my other dogs came inside for a visit and she wasn't impressed, which is a change, so looks like she is definitely preparing, keeping everyone but my older girl, who she loved out! Ozstar, by the photo I would have thought Scarlet had many more than 4, so good luck with your whelping, especially if they are large puppies. My girl is huge, but going by your experience maybe she doesn't have heaps. I am hoping for 8, no more, as I had a litter of 11 once and it was a lot more work, especially as they get older, all the cleaning!!!!!
-
Thanks magicmine. Congratulations to everyone who has puppies! Kelpiesrule - I hope my girl has them as quickly as yours did, that was amazing, you are blessed! My girls temp was fine this morning and she had a relatively quiet night, so she may go to Saturday. She only had the one mating, so I am sure of dates! I am trying to get as much sleep as possible now, as she was a bit overwhelmed with her first litter. I mated her on her first heat after the pups, as I thought it would hlep her the 2nd time around. I hope so anyway! She is very healthy and content at the moment, just doesn't want me out of her sight. As soon as I go into the whelping room to sleep she relaxes and then goes to sleep. Good luck everyone with your puppies, and wish us a complication free whelping!
