  1. Hi Freckles!! I just had to take a couple of pics of Tashi our Tibbie as I didnt have any good ones, here are the ones I think look quite good, I will let you choose, thankyou so much!! Elka Zana Tashi The one of Zana is small, I must have resized it and cant find the original one, I am uploading a couple more or Zana in Photo Bucket if this one is no good.
  2. Unfortunately paying a lot of money is not going to guarantee the success of any operation. Sometimes we as pet owners expect surgery or drugs to be a cure all when in reality they are not. I have had my left knee operated on twice (same problem both times) and I still favour that leg - doesn't mean the surgery wasn't successful, just means it is a working, weight bearing joint which is not as good as it once was and will continue to deteriorate. Cruciate surgery is massive surgery and I would certainly recommend those that are unhappy with the proposed diagnosis do get a second opinion. The problem is that I don't know if she is in any pain, and I would say that the Vet is going to want to do a Xray. It does not bother me at all as long as I know her leg isn't hurting her, but how do we know this. I was told that she would be fine after having the operation, the only thing was that there was a 60% chance that her other leg might end up with the same thing. So because she is still holding up her fixed leg, she is bearing more weight on her good leg, which in turn could cause the cruciate ligament to go in that leg also, so that is of great concern to me also. What a dilemma!!!! That is exactly what happened to Zana, she was not using the leg that had the surgery at all and putting all her weight on her "good" leg, a week later the "good" leg cruciate went!! Zana isn't 100% on her back legs now, she has arthritis in her knees as well and she is getting on a bit, she will be 12 years in October. The vet told me the reason her cruciate's went was because of the arthritis, it eats at the ligament and fray's it, much the same way as a rope would fray and eventually it snapped. In saying that my FIL's Corgi had a cruciate rupture when she was young, she chased a ball and turned too quick, you would never had known she had surgery, she led a normal life and never limped.
  3. When my GSD Zana ruptured her Cruciate she was extremely lame, couldn't put her foot on the ground at all, but being a big dog it might have affected her more. My friend has a Chi who ruptured both of hers and she didnt need the surgery as she is a tiny dog, she copes fine, she is stiff when she first gets up, she is an old dog. When my vet diagnosed Zana she didn't do ex rays though, just the manipulation thing.
  4. So how does the Furminator work? If it has a blade, does it cut the hair like a razor comb would? Thought it would be great for my Shepherds and our Tibetan Spaniel when he is older, also my FIL has a Corgi and was saying how much hair he has around the house from him.
  5. That is great news, I am so glad they are doing well together now
  6. Name: Maxine Age (optional): 36 Location: Jindera, near Albury NSW Rescue Group: Albury Dog Rescue Time in Rescue: 6 months Who I can vouch for: Trisven13 Who Can Vouch for me: Trisven13 Preferred Breed: Any breed, But GSD are my favorite Experience (if any): 12 years training at my local All Breeds Club ( Competing in obedience, flyball, and agility) 6 years instructing, (not instructing at the moment due to work and child commitments) [b]Microchip Yes Vaccination Yes Desexing Yes Heartworm test No but highly recommended by both ourselves & vets (can't factor it into an acceptable to the public price) - do treat pups though. Also we have a very low risk by comparison to other areas here in Albury. worming Yes flea treatment Yes vet work if required Always provide immediate vet attention when required but choose to pts over expensive treatments (parvo etc) as we do not have the funds for these events. On occasion a carer will pay out of their own pocket to treat a dog that has more expensive needs (I have done this myself many times). I believe that the $1,000.00 spent to save the life of one dog is better spent by our organisation on another 10 plus dogs with mild problems. It is, however, always a committee decision. basic training/teach manners. I take my foster puppies to Puppy Preschool, and when old enough to the local All Breeds Kennel Club (ie: 4 months old) house train dogs Yes Dogs inside the home or outside They spend sometime inside when I am home during the day and outside when I am not home, at night time, inside. Are you prepared to give extra care for a submissive nervous dog.Yes. Our committee WILL NOT rehome a dog with temperament issues and this includes fear aggression. I have "cut & paste" some of the info in "additional information" from Trisven13's post as the information is relevant to Albury Dog Rescue, whom I foster for
  7. I use "Joint Food" - (Glucosamine, MSM & Chondroitin) made by "Natures Way" I get it from Safeways.
  8. My GSD Elka developed a limp when she was about 6 months old, my vet advised me to give her strict rest which meant crating, it came good then a bit later she went lame again, I got her desexed and the vet did ex-rays to check for Elbow Dysplasia and I think for OCD at the same time, the ex-rays came back clear, so it was back to strictly resting her. I took her to a chiropractic and he said she had mussel wastage around her shoulder and he though she had maybe ran into something. She is 3 years now and haven't had any other trouble with her, touch wood
  9. Thanks for that Tapferhund - Pannus sounds nasty I will google it in a minuet, I also had my father in laws Corgi here for a while and he ending up with one sore watery eye, the Shepherd Merlin that I fostered for a while had it in one eye as well thats what made my vet think it was maybe a plant allergy of some kind.
  10. My Shepherd "Elka" gets watery, red eyes during summer, my vet told me to bathe her eyes with tea bags as tea is a natural anti inflammatory, I found this did work for Elka and her eyes are looking good at the moment. Otherwise maybe it could be conjunctivitis, you would need to get some cream from the vet for that.
  11. Sounds great!! Am looking forward to meeting you :D
  12. mercedes - Trisven13 and I go to Albury & Border Kennel club to and find the training methods great (I have been going there for 12 years and have seen a few changes) hope to see you there in a couple of weeks
  13. I get 10kg bags of chicken frames for $7 and 2kgs bags of chicken mince for $2 a bag from "Lenard's" the chicken frames have heaps of meat still on them to. I get whatever raw veggies are on special at "Safeways" and lamb off cuts from there to, the offal is a bit pricey at "Safeways" if I can get it in the butchers its cheaper but they don't always have it available.
  14. I have seen someone do this once, his partner was doing the Open Stays (out of sight) and he stood outside the ring as his partner was having trouble with the dog braking, the dog did the stays and passed the trial. weisnjac- not saying at all that this is what you were doing, just saying I have seen it done before, if there is nothing in the rule book about it, cant see how they could enforce it. I have seen dogs break the stays as there was someone the dog knows standing outside the ring anyway!
  15. Wow, that's weird mine died on Friday!!! Well it didnt die completely, something went in the switch and it wouldn't turn off and only went "Flat out" even if I put it on a lower setting, mine was a Sunbeam that I got at Target, I only got it 3 months ago so took it back yesterday and they replaced it. I was very happy with it otherwise, it has a huge bowl and all other blades for grating, slicing etc, haven't tested the other blades out as I have only used mine to make the BARF They are on special for $107 instead of $119 at the moment, the special ends on Wednesday.
  16. I taught Zana to speak very easily as she is a very vocal dog anyway, I did it by saying in a very exited tone of voice "speak, speak, speak" and gave a food reward when she did, like I said she is a very vocal dog who if you get her exited will bark, reward any attempt that your dog makes to vocalise, even if its just a wine or moan then it should eventually lead to a "woof". For the hand signal, you kind of flick your fingers as if you are trying to flick water off them at someones face. Hope this has been of some help
  17. Congratulations to Billie and Jaqci I know Billie from the Kennel Club. I would love to do Tracking with Elka but just don't have the time at the moment, did do a Tracking Seminar at Wangaratta a while back and we both really enjoyed it
  18. Thanks zoepuppy I am pretty sure the sneezing started within a couple of days.
  19. I have had this happen with Elka when she had her 12 weeks injections. She had the intranasal and developed a weird "reverse Sneezing" like "Tangwyn" described. I asked my breeder about it who is a vet nurse also and she said it can happen, Elka's litter brother had the intranasal also (at a different vet's) and developed a cough, I asked my vet about and she said no, she had never heard about it and it wasn't possible, but did say Elka's throat was a bit inflamed. To be on the safe side I have avoided it ever since.
  20. I totally BARF feed my dogs now and have no farting problems with them When they were getting dry food (Bonnie Working Dog) I would get up in the morning and the smell emitting from the laundry was sometimes so bad I thought they had actually done something worse than a fart ;)
  21. In recalls I stand with my hands clasped in front as I also food train and hopefully the dog will come in nice and straight to my hands, in stays I have hands behind my back, its just what our club has taught me and now becomes second nature, we do a lot of proofing exercises in training, instructor will walk up to the heel position of a dog and step off, walking in front of and behind them, stopping in front of them and looking at them etc.
  22. I boil up some lambs fry (lambs liver) cut into tiny pieces and freeze it, my dogs love it and it doesnt take ages to eat like the dried, my young girl was always coughing and gagging when I used the dry liver treats, its stinky though but the dogs love it so I don't care
  23. I have roughly worked out that to feed BARF to two GSD's and one foster ACD X puppy who is 4 months old cost's me about $30 -$35 a fortnight depending on what I get and what on special, I find my younger girl very hard to put on and keep weight on but she is doing really well on BARF and has even put on a few kg's, my old girl is a very good "doer" so doesn't need as much as the younger dog, the foster pup will obviously need more as he gets bigger so it will probably cost me a bit more as time goes on. When I bought "Advance" a 20kg bag ( it had 5kg for free, its normally 15kg) lasted me about a month at around $100 a bag, so for me feeding BARF is fairly cheap I think, but obviously all dogs are different and will do differently on it. Also feeding BARF has helped with my younger Shepherd with her itchy skin and watery eyes this summer.
  24. Thanks for your reply Poodle wrangler! I will just keep doing what I am doing and hope for the best. My boy had the surgery and the vet said his spleen was enlarged (they removed his spleen) he said this can sometimes rotate the stomach, so maybe it was something that I could never have stopped happening through preventative measures. He died a few hours after the surgery
