  1. off topic or is it? humans dont seem to learn by their mistakes if this is anything to go by http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tobias-stone/history-tells-us-what-will-brexit-trump_b_11179774.html
  2. Yes , an impossible task, so many variables. my favorite working dog was my friend Les Ellery's kelpie. he had put an injured filly in a separate paddock so it would be easier to catch and clean her wounds twice a day.. each time he would send his kelpie to bring her into the yards. except day 3 she was in the far corner under the tree, other side of the fence was the main herd . she flatly refused to leave the herd. The kelpie looked to Les for orders. Les meanwhile was rolling with laughter at the dogs predicament. he said his dog gave him a totally disgusted look and it was as if he shurgged his shoulders, tossed Les's order to bring her in and instead jumped the fence and brought the entire mob up along the fenceline to the stockyards. meanwhile the filly now all alone, followed along the fence and also arrived at the stockyards. Dog leapt the fence, drove her the last feet through the open gate and sat in the gateway looking fiercely at Les. Les said his message unmistakable NOW! GET YOU SORRY ASS OVER HERE AND SHUT THE GATE! Wonder how the scientists would rate that, in Australia its called initiative and our working dogs have it in spades
  3. When the code of ethics for Dogs NSW included this. " 8. A Member shall not breed a bitch that results in it whelping more than twice in eighteen months without the prior approval of the Board of Directors except under extenuating circumstances where application for registration of the litter may be considered by the Board of Directors. 9. A Member shall not breed a bitch that results in it whelping more than twice in two years without the prior written approval of a Veterinary Surgeon certifying her fitness to carry and whelp the third litter. 10. A Member shall not breed a bitch that results in it whelping more than six times without prior veterinary certification of fitness for further breeding and without prior approval of the Board of Directors except under extenuating circumstances where application for registration of the litter may be considered by the Board of Directors" My vets comment was they certainly did not bother to liase with any reproduction specalist vets. The species canine in his opinion should not be bred so infrequently. That a bitch is better off having her litters when she is young (the norm before was the majority of bitches had their litters before they turned 4 or 5 and were retired, either desexed and rehomed or retired and kept as pets) but the breeder should have the right to that decision as there really is never going to be a one size fits all where individuals are concerned) litter spacing decided by the breeder and their vet, if she had large litters some bitches need to be rested, those with small litters would be better off being bred on each to not only give the breeder greater choice to choose from, but reduce obesity in bitches which have small litters and therefore can have weight issues if left unbred too long between. It also flies in the face of the fact that older mothers, human included produce a higher percentage of chromosome abnormalities including mongolism, its now documented in dogs too I well remember when I asked why such a blanket ruling, I bred Chihuahua's at the time and one of my best bitches never had more than one pup per (cough) "litter" if anyone can call one pup a litter that is? her best pup was the result of her 7th litter. now of course banned and she had all 7 in a row bred every 6 months, now that stupid rule is in place she would only possibly have managed to produce 5 pups maximum in her lifetime. no Matter that the large breed bitches produce anything from 10 to 18 PER LITTER! YET I had to put up with them yelping that I should stop wingeing and be satisfied with what I got. I suggested then if this utterly stupid code come into force then no breeder be permitted more than 15 puppies per bitch and she be retired, regardless of breed since few toy breeders were ever going to be allowed even that number of puppies to choose their next generation from, if its forced on one percentage of the membership then the rest should cope with the same restrictions too. Surely fair, should be fair to all? The real problem was the code of ethics was not formulated to work with the best practice for either the health and well being of the bitches or the selection of the best puppies for the next generation. It was formulated to pander too and appease the animal libbers and the Politically correct in the frantic hope the KC's would be left off the persecution list. doesn't seem to have worked at all does it, if the latest attacks from Victoria in the form of that latest legislation that was so almost shoved through. 1 bitch and you had to become a registered business with an ABN? NO one allowed to have more than 10 fertile dogs. utter nonsense. look at the world famous breeders who created and maintained the breeds we know today, never happen again with the incredible genetic selection restrictions being called for and pushed for now No sign yet the libbers or Peta have put down the gun does it? pandering to them is not going to achieve anything, Their Brief is not the elimination of puppy farms, it is the elimination of the domestic dog. read their own websites. I should reword that, Pandering to them is going to achieve the elimination of the domestic dog by genetic bottlneck, too few being bred, too few to select from, mission will be accomplished. unless those of us who want to keep their dogs wake up before its too late. if it isnt too late already for many breeds, hopefully the blinkers will fall off before its too late for all
  4. spot on. in the early 80's it became more and more people were being told " to be ethical" you must not breed to supply people with a puppy, "to be ethcal" you only breed a litter to continue your line. There were many who also came out with "to be ethical" you cant ask a price for your extra puppies you dont keep, to make a profit is to be a SHOCK, HORROR, PUPPY FARMERS. ONLY a puppy farmers breeds to make money. I have heard so much along these lines and as I was told each, asked, if only those who have sufficient money to breed and except a loss that leaves only the rich allowed to continue a breed? even then when the KC did a survey they discovered to their suprise 90 of members are only registered breeders for 6 years or less. of remaining 10% the membership that had been breeders 15 years or more and were the actually backbone the majority were pensioners and their pin money came from their puppy sales. I believed then and I am sure now, this crap that those so desperate to get on and stay on the so called "ethical" bandwaggon were being conned by the animal libbers spreading this junk
  5. now that would be a really great initiative wouldn't it
  6. Years ago my vet approached the AVA suggesting vets compile a list of breeders whose puppies were proving to be free of inherited or low incidence of problems, as well as a list of breeders with high incidence and from this information release a list of recommended breeders. This would have included ALL BREEDERS, of all puppies, be it ANKC, unregistered, x breeds and purebreds, As he said, vets are at the front line of seeing these things and in the best position to compile such records, to his disappointment there was little interest. Many he said feared they may be sued by breeders they didn't recommend. He still lives in hope some day it may get up off the ground. sounded a great initiate to me anyway. I know even really motivated breeders can still have a disaster, one bought a new potential stud puppy of the french bulldog breed and he developed problems during a heat wave and died before they could get him to the vet, he had not exhibited any of the problems prior to purchase so was a very devastating to happen. Having owned and bred Chihuahuas since 1978 I know of no health problems associated with either the blue, chocolate or lilac genetics save the 1 in 4 incidence of blue gene alopecia in some blues and lilacs. It has never contributed to any actual health issues in the dog though. what it does do in the one it does manifest in, is end the show career of the dog as if its a long coat it does tend to look pretty odd. I have seen it manifest as either short , very short hair on the ears. or along the top of the tail and hindquarters and back. the funniest I saw as a beautiful Lilac boy I bought as a puppy with stunning coat, but when his adult coat came in he had fine baby mist on his ears, top of his head and right along his topline to the tip of his tail. looked like a lawnmower had gone over him. the cutest manifestation I saw was a blue and white boy I bred, he had a white muzzle, big blaze, white collar, 4 white feet and half the tail was white. in his case he lost all his long blue coat and could have passed easily for a Mexican hairless, save for his flowing white face and blaze, massive white mane around his collar, wide legged pants around his legs and 3 inch long white flag on his tail. alopecia means hair loss, not mange of any kind and chocolates are not affected. In the case of the Mexican Hairless it is a different gene, the blue gene alopecic dog is not actually hairless the hair in the affected areas is soft and short. giving the visual impression compared to the normal length coat. so I do wonder why people are saying there are health issues with these colour genes? how many of you realise an entire breed is the result of all dilute coat colour, blue and chocolate hence their amazing colour, and that is the Weimariner? http://www.blueweimaraner.com/genetics.html so I do wonder why these colours are taboo in the frenchie?
  7. True showdog, the really important thing if you choose a puppy, is you MUST remember to get him used to being groomed minimum a few minutes daily better many short grooms than try to keep one wigglie puppy still for half and hour, puppy needs to learn to lay on its side , either side and on its back while you fiddle with tummy, legs, throat and muzzle. ditto for laying on tum while you fiddle with top of muzzle, topknot neck, back and tail. just a short brush each time until you can see puppy is relaxing and enjoying and then gradually lengthen the time . if you do not do this grooming will not be fun or relaxing for either of you. or if you take puppy to a groomer if its not been trained it will be very unhappy and uncooperative for the groomer.
  8. when I was your age I bought my first purebred dog, he was a toy poodle and I had no idea where to get him clipped, that was 1964 and no grooming shops in them olden days, except if you lived in sydney, his breeder recommended a book that showed you how to groom and clip your own dog, my initial attempts were interesting to say the least and on a bad day when he looked like a manic lawnmower had been at him he would hide under the furniture until a few days had passed and he didn't look so silly, it sure looked like he knew he was the one being laughed at and greatly resented it. but I learned with every attempt until I had mastered the lamb clip, the continental clip, looked horrible to me, and so many other variations. once I had it down pat, people began paying me to clip theirs. Check out the books available on learning to clip and pick the one with the most details and explanations. my book was great it even has line drawings to show which ways to brush the top knot then cut to get the best results, but cant remember its title at the moment. topknots are the real challenge to get right but once masters is VERY SATISFYING. once achieved. even gave friends hair cuts for themselves, I and many who asked me to clip theirs found my boy looked much nicer than the clips many busy salons whizzz over their clients dogs, unless its being done for a show. but if your time short then take him to them may be the easier option. It can take hours while you are experimenting trust me on that, an hour or four can disappear without you noticing while you are playing groomer and barber, my mum held the record, she bought a standard poodle and one day she was so blizzfully grooming and clipping and adjusting while Tilly snoozed on the grooming table she didn't notice 6 hours disappear. I kid you not. but Tilly was a lot of poodle she was bigger than most german shepherds
  9. at the 46 second mark he can be clearly seen to pull the dog right out of the water and back up to him. then as the chap says the rest of the video was taken at a later time and spliced to make it apper he went into the water. watch the second counter and there it is, bit surprised they didn't cut it out? although its very short and visually looks like most of you missed anyway, it maybe they did too. and I'm referring not the the release date of the movie but the release date of the tape, they sat on it for a year before they did anything? why not name and shame at the time if they truely cared about the welfare of the dog and not when it might get the most bang for their buck exposure.
  10. rewatch the video the dog never went in all the way, its hinds legs and its hips went in then the trainer pulls the dog up back to him its cut the second the trainer begins lifting the dog back up out of the water , YOU DO NOT SEE IT GOING INTO THE WATER. your mind is finishing what isn't there. so frankly I believe the chap below.. agree the trainer should have stopped immediately the dog said no. as said above so many have assumed what actually didn't happen too. as this http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/gavin-polone-a-dogs-purpose-outcry-what-happened-whos-blame-967160 link says, its cut at that point and the second half shows the dog in the second shoot when it had jumped in willingly from the other side AND as he so tellingly says, , it was cut at the point the dog when under, you don't get to see it resurface or its behavior when back out of the water yet all that was on video. Although now the shit has hit the fan I for one think all the footage should be released so people can see for themselves and make a decision as to how manipulated the editing was that was released by peta, if they don't then we only have his word for it there is full footage that peta deleted. AND the most telling they waited a year to release it?
  11. This Ashton is the man who shot Ruth Downeys cattle and here killed another 76, when even their own employees resign rather than countenance the slaughter surely something HAS TO BE DONE to give owners an avenue of appeal against the sociopaths drawn to this job because they discover a job where they are unaccountable? https://video-syd2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t42.1790-2/13121004_1595114640815674_1086994242_n.mp4?efg=eyJ2ZW5jb2RlX3RhZyI6InN2ZV9zZCJ9&oh=50fbbb0376e87c243d5279a651f0762a&oe=58862B1A
  12. such good advice, yes turn things into a game , good psychology, animals aren't dumb as some people try to tell you, when someone would say that to me, I would be thinking, I'm looking at the dumb one, they have no idea now richly their animals can interact with them
  13. PK's advice is spot on, I had and bred cavaliers for over 16 years and your puppy is not behaving like a normal cavalier, please take pk's advice.
  14. a member of my family has bought a frenchie and to my amazement she told me its normal procedure for the breed to have him booked into the vets to have his nose and soft palette done! Even more interesting he is main registered as brindle? blind freddy can see that he is blue to me why buy, let alone breed an animal that can die without surgery? although I am a bit curious about the frenzy over colour, when I was a kid no border collie was considered purebred unless it was black or black and white, now there are Gold, cream, blue, chocolate and lilac? obviously the genes had been there all along except they are now recognised and not only registered but shown and win?
  15. Its surprising how few people know to even think of a greyhound. when I a litter for sale I always took them to my daughter in laws for them to pick up and they got to meet her greyhound, Honey, almost without fail after meeting Honey, they would decide if they get a second dog or their next one it will be a greyhound, she made such a favorable impression on them. not enough exposure to people on a general basis to greyhounds I suspect is the problem.
  16. as some are beginning to notice to them every complaint lodged isnt an opportunity to help the animal or educate the owner, its either a golden income opportunity or generate free publicity, fail a tick to either (preferably both) of those two and their "hands are tied, sorry"
  17. spotted this news story, Obviously they are just as greedy and inhumane in the old dart http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1252213/Judge-slams-RSPCAs-court-attempt-double-300-000-left-generous-animal-lover.html#ixzz3dTtk8kDs
  18. unfortunately the mindset of that horrible woman it seems is what they look for to employ, they leave me feeling they enjoy heaping as much humiliation on people as they possibly can with no care for the owner or their pets mental anguish, if anything the more pain they can inflict the better seems to be the aim.
  19. agree, they should be kept home, or dont have one, the damage they do is dreadful. wouldn't have an issue if it were mice and rats they targeted but not so, anything that moves is a target, neighbour wont keep theirs home so all our skinks who lived on the verandah are now gone as are the tree frogs and the wrens have gone from 18 to 7. the temptation to get it shot is overpowering, too smart to go into a trap n prior to that other neighbours have trapped and impounded it and they just pay the fine, bring it back home and let it loose again
  20. those with noisy dogs next door, I advise them to get one of those ultrasonic bark busters and hang it beside the fence, all have reported back has helped shut it up n its owner doesnt even know why. although the little battery can need replacing every few days for a while until the dog reduces its barking. had a real yapper of my own and the citronella collar was a joke, he learned so many barks and it runs out . think the blighter learned to count how many before it ran out, then he was off full bore again. His owner had named him echo, now that surely is asking for trouble? I bought the little bird house look model and the local electronics store rewired it to clip to a car battery so it didnt need recharging for a month.. BLISS! Mine is the little brown model, the electronics shop added a gizmo to adjust the voltage from the car battery. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Puppy-Dog-Ultrasonic-Outdoor-Stop-Bark-Anti-Barking-Control-System-Device-/311668909394?hash=item4890ea2552:g:QpAAAOSwq7JUGmK3
  21. Since one of the original carers of the dog and her puppies was a qualified vet, so are we now to assume their qualification's don't count, because goodness knows who at the rspca disagreed with their opinion of the temperament of the dog and her puppies? why is being employed by the rspca supposed to mean that opinion is the only valid 'expert' one? What part of becoming an employee there inparts automatic impeecable powers of knowledge? I know my perfectly healthy dog when he was taken, came back a mess, with pneumonia to boot, and their all knowing vet didn't even notice. My vet is still furious over the incompetence they displayed, saw him this Saturday and he came out with it, nice to know Im not the only one who remembers. but as said above because the all knowing all powerful spell "RSPCA" invokes on anything they do or say joe public like the poster above, will say "not sure what the truth is here!"
  22. I agree. We wouldn't have dogs if we didn't believe we could give them a good life. It's not always obvious when that's no longer the case, but everybody seems eager to voice an opinion. I've sent dogs over the rainbow bridge earlier than others would have done - my heart-dog most painfully; her degenerative myelopathy was not advanced, but she was terrified of falling. I've also kept dogs alive, knowing that they had a quality of life that other people didn't recognise. My heart-dog's grand-daughter lived happily with more advanced DM; she learnt to prop her hindquarters against the clothes hoist while she showed a puppy how to dig. My oodle rescue lived a vibrant life in the world of smell, still able to track me through the paddock long after he lost both sight and hearing. Too often, I've prolonged my pets' lives against my better judgement, at the urging of vets. I've seen them die harder because of it, when their circulation has become too poor for rapid administration of the final anaesthetic. Most recently, my elderly Birman developed unexpected kidney failure. The vets sent her home, knowing that they'd been unable to get her to eat or drink. After a day of forcibly administering food and water, I returned to the vets. They talked about dialysis, and made me feel cruel when I opted for euthenasia. Her blood pressure was so low that they had to inject the anaesthetic directly into the heart. People are too ready to judge others for their decisions. Funny in a way that title, as so many agree, I included, we only just recently had to let our part of the family pony go a day short of her 36th birthday she looked so good she could have won a halter class but her old knees and hocks had become too stiff to let her get up unaided anymore, once quality of life has gone the compassionate thing to do is let them go. Yet what is so broken about our system that our aged parents cannot be permitted the same compassion? No mother should discover her daughter had been begged by her grandmother to smother her with the pillow to end her suffering, surely? (she had gangrene and took 6 weeks to die an agonising end, she could not be saved so what was the purpose of withholding a compassionate end? she had asked me to do the same, had no idea until recently she had also done the same to my child, I knew she would be better off, but feared the law, with hindsight I did the wrong thing, she lingered another terrible 4 weeks, no one deserves that, that is hard to cope with) she had already suffered unimaginable agony for the previous 3 MONTHS? because the two doctors asked to see her at the nursing home were too incompetent to diagnose a broken hip despite my protests she was obviously in extreme pain after a fall from her bed one morning, could find no one to investigate why a perfectly ambulatory woman prior to the fall was incapable of moving let alone walk afterwards. only after she developed gangrene in the resulting ulcers on her heels and I am talking bone exposed here was she transferred to a hospital. the medical board did investigate my complaints. the doctors concerned told the board it was the patients fault for saying the pain was in her knee (I had made such a fuss a second doctor had been brought in for a second opinion) and two xrays proved the knee was fine, never occured to either to xray the hip and they did not tell me they had only xrayed the knee both times I had finally got them to have xrays done, so she was moved from bed to wheel chair twice a day at minimum. according to an orthopedic surgeon the pain of a broken hip radiates to the knee, the poor pair were sent for retaining and counseling, all paid for by the medical board. no such compassion or counseling assistance for me or my daughter or the rest of the family though. So do not presume some doctors actually know what they are doing just because MD is at the end of their name.
  23. I believe even small kids are WELL able to distinguish between their own dog and a strange dog :) once again .. it is up to parents to instil respect and knowledge . As kids, we used to do all sorts of things to our dogs ... but would NEVER attempt to try anything on one of the working dogs , let alone a dog we didn't know. Why is it so hard to teach this nowdays? We knew we'd be snapped at by the dog , or chastised by a parent if we did the 'wrong' thing ..simple consequences .So we learned ... Kids today miss out on so much that we took for granted as children , they may be in the computer age but I suspect we were the lucky ones. My dad had a building supply business and in the 50's your surveliance system was your guard dogs, no camera's then. anyone could enter and inspect the goods, the deal was once you had decided you told dad or one of his brothers which items you wanted and paid as dad or his brothers loaded your purchases... If you tried to load them yourself one of the dogs stopped you. no kidding, they knew the rules. no shop lifting problems there. dad had german shepherds, the original ones, and once Blue the red cattledog arrived, it was ACD's from that day forward, he was amazing he knew the drill from day one no need to be taught like the others, in the best ACD's its instinct. anyone enter after closing if no one was home would discover they were not allowed to leave until someone in the family arrived to tell the dogs it was ok to let them leave. when I married took one with me to my new home, came home from shopping to discover my new landlord had been "waiting" 2 hours for me to come home. he was allowed to sit on the verandah but leave? no chance. thought he would do the biscuit. but thankfully he was thrilled. reckoned wouldn't need to worry about his house being damaged by burglars regardless of whether I was home or not
  24. I know no one would be able to use my misty's tail or Bindi's, they would be wagging way to fast for a child to catch, as for bindi, the paper would have been stolen and those paints been scatters to the four winds in about 3 seconds if that as the paint pots were thrown and retrieved over and over again. although the patience of some animal with a young child can astound you. found my toddler trying to milk my jersey one morning, Zardi was standing with a strange look on her face and one jaw twisted sideways. then I realise sitting beneath her was my toddler, holding a teat in both hands and trying to wring the milk out of it into a cup in her lap. Zardi didn't move a muscle save her jaw. still didnt move as I pulled her tormentor out from under her. she earned herself a home for life, just like daughters pony fluffy who we only just lost a day short of 36 Zardi wasn't in a bail or even haltered she was in her own paddock free to walk away. I watched that dog carfeully in the video it showed no sign that the child may have been hurting its tail before I decided to share the video
  25. think there will be two trains of thought. amazing patient family dog or how could the parents let her use him like that. me, I think that dog is adorable and that little kid is going to be pretty smart to even think outside the square and realise a tail would make a good paintbrush
